(speaking in a foreign language) - Mineiro's perfume. (speaking in foreign language) - Okay. (speaking in foreign language) - Okay. - Cool. Oh, as you continue to chew, the garlic flavor of the sauce, the garlic flavor of the sausage. - We became addicted. - That's like, - That's addictive. - That's like an immediate addiction. And another thing you can see is how he slowly grills the sausages so they have a really smoky appearance, but also a layer of caramelized grilled fat around the sausage that breaks apart when you bite into it. (speaking in foreign language) - The atmosphere here, the friendliness of Mineiro. That salty sausage with that sauce and those chiles, that's really a great breakfast. We have to go for a little more chili and oil.
This also takes it to a whole new level. Oh yeah, that's going to be a mouthful. (speaking in foreign language) - Oh man, there's literally nothing else you want to have for breakfast when you're in Rio de Janeiro, when you're here. The sausage smells delicious. - With the chili. - In my last bite, a little sauce stuck to my shoe. I think I'll leave it there as a souvenir. - I would like one more. (laughing) - Obrigado, obrigado. - Oh yeah. (laughing) - It's a double-decker bus. - This is one of those snacks, one of those sausages that are too good to stop at just one. - That Minas Gerais herb-type sauce that he makes goes so well with that sausage, with that bun, with that lettuce, with those chilis.
I think I have a little document on that bite. - Obrigado. - Very obrigado. - Very good, very good. - Very good. - Hello. - Man, what a community man, what a special man, what a man representing Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, oh man, that was a great way to start the day. Now we head to what is easily one of the most emblematic sites, one of the most incredible, one of the representative sites of the city. Can you see it, right up there? That's where we head next. (upbeat music) One of the most incredible things about just driving, even being in Rio de Janeiro, is the hills, the nature, the jungle.
It's like a city that could literally be invaded by jungle, hanging vines, and green cliffs. It is a spectacular, spectacular landscape. The beaches, which we will see later today. But the city is incredibly beautiful. This is the Trem do Corcovado. And Corcovado is like a hump, like a camel's hump because the rock, the cliff, the mountain on which Christ the Redeemer is built looks like a hump. So I booked tickets in advance online for 65 reais per person and now we have our tickets here at the booth. The cable cars, it's like a cable car, well, a kind of tram, yes, it's more of a tram.
Oh, we have the next empty car. - You'll have a better view, okay? - It's good, awesome. It will be a 20 minute drive and we will literally get on right there. We go straight to the side of the mountain. Oh man, we went into the fog, into the clouds, it's beautiful. Just thinking that we are in the middle of the city, in the middle of Rio de Janeiro, the enormous city. And this urban jungle, a thick, steep jungle, going up the camel's back, going up the camel's hump. We're even starting to get into some of the clouds now. (upbeat music) The tram climbed 700 meters to the rock, to the hump.
And now, a few flights of stairs to reach the Christ. I think we ran up those stairs. That's a beautiful morning exercise. Wow, oh man, wow, that's the first time I've looked up. That's surreal, man. And then get to the end of the road and enjoy that view of Rio. You can see the beaches, the incredible landscape. Part of the city is still covered in clouds. We are above the clouds on this huge pillar of rock. You can't even, I can't even describe it. Just to say a few words, I wanted to visit Rio de Janeiro, I wanted to visit Brazil since I found out about it when I was a child.
And this was one of the milestones, one of the icons that I had seen. I said, "I have to go there in my life." And being here is a very special moment for me. It is much more spectacular in person than in photos. And just looking out over the city, Jesus Christ is 30 meters tall, made of a combination of sandstone and concrete, sitting on a huge pedestal atop a literal 700 meter stone pillar that has just reached the sky, covered in jungle, overlooking the bays, overlooking Rio de Janeiro. It's like a place without words to see. And it is one of the new seven wonders of the world.
Okay, final quick view, but we have to move on. Today we have a lot more Brazilian food to eat. But it is, it is beyond words. From here we will visit the Selarón Stairs, which is another icon of Rio de Janeiro. Colorful ceramic tiles going up a staircase. It is a place that I also wanted to visit. Very soon we will be on our way there. I think Guilherme jumped out of the car to go buy coffee. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - Thank you. - You are welcome. - That's much better, now we're really on our way.
Good stuff, man. - Health. - Health. - Health. - Health. (speaking in foreign language) - I love it, oh, what good coffee. One thing I really want to ask you while we're driving is how do you explain the word valeu? - Valeu could be in many ways like this, thank you, no problem, how are you, I'm fine. - Guilherme was explaining to us, if you raise your thumb and say "okay", it's like you're ready. - That means thank you, no problem. - As if you get smiles. - Excuse me. - You will get smiles, you will immediately have a connection.
That's a word you should know when you're in Rio. - By the way, it's like Rio slang. (fast tempo music) - Yeah, here, I bought this one at LAX airport in Los Angeles. This one in Honolulu. - Hawaii, yes. - This one is from Hollywood and another from Hawaii. - Did you give them to them 12 years ago? - 12 years ago. - So you met the artist, you met the artist. That's just amazing. - Since 2005. - This is one of the most emblematic stairs, one of the most colorful, one of the most beautiful in the world, which appears in so many videos and representations of Rio de Janeiro.
And only the colored tiles, the yellow tiles, the blue tiles, red, red was the artist's favorite color. The artist Selarón was Chilean, from Chile. But he loved Rio de Janeiro, he loved this community. He began to build these steps. Just 20 years ago, the steps were empty. But he turned it into this just beautiful, beautiful space. Snoop Dogg's favorite mosaic? - Snoop Dogg's favorite mosaic, Alcatraz. - It's so bright, so vibrant, so colorful, so like... uh, like happy, rejuvenating stair steps. We're at Café Rex, or locally it's called "Café Hex," because the R is usually pronounced almost like an H.
But this place is known for all kinds of food, especially its frango assado, which is roast chicken that you simply roast. over charcoal on a continuously rotating grill. They have an amazing outdoor atmosphere, sort of a bar counter. You can sit at the bar and they have a few tables along the sidewalk outside. The amazing thing about this place is that they still use charcoal over the fire. That makes a difference, they are quite high, about a foot above the charcoal, so it is a very slow roast over the charcoal. And you can hear the hiss as the juices, as the fat drips off of those chickens spinning, wooh, that's hot. (speaking in foreign language) - I was just wondering what's in these coconuts.
And no like, I just wanted to know what's in them. Immediately, grab one of them, open the cork and start pouring. It is cachaca, which is the famous Brazilian sugar cane liquor. So I'll take a very small sip to try it. Wow, that's really sweet. You really taste the coconut. So what it does when you order the chicken is it takes it off the grill and then gives it a final sear. Then he puts it on a metal rack. He puts it right on top of the charcoal to give it that final smoky and crispy touch.
And he cuts it, and he does an incredible job of plating it. He's done it many, many times, so it's like the drumsticks are at each end. It's like repositioning a chicken. So today we decided to have a meat feast for lunch. Oh wow, there is so much meat. This is a whole plate of oxtail. We got a whole chicken, some sausage and he pulled out a whole piece of juicy meat. That's like meat as far as the eye can see. - What food. - So much meat. - Obrigado. - Rex is the place to be. - Rex is the place to be.
I have to start with that chicken and that skin alone, literally, because he gave it that final roast, that skin is perfectly browned, so perfectly crispy. Like he doesn't even turn out that good when you fry him. That's just the work of fire. (speaking in foreign language) - That's chicken, oh wow, the skin is so crispy and the meat inside is so tender and so oily, perfect. - Let me help you. - A little bit of lime, an impressive bottle of chili sauce, which in Brazil, like them, absolutely understands the importance of chili sauce in any meal, in every meal that is eaten.
Drizzle the chili oil and lift this guy. That's a sausage, man, it's almost like the one we had this morning, but it's fatter. Because every bite, the whole sausage is like juices in your mouth, that skin just breaks. It's a beautiful, meaty feeling. He's opening it. - The boss is opening it. - Taking out the screw to get real chilies. -Like, look,-What an amazing man, he threw in some of those chiles with that oil, the real chiles. I'm going to split my bite here with some farofa, which is all over Brazil, it's powdered cassava starch, like one part of a staple that you can eat with meat, you can eat with anything.
It's really good because it's a little heavy but light at the same time, and it has that kind of crunchy texture. It's so rich and then it has that smoky, bubbly texture from being roasted over the fire. It's like eating a whole block of cheese. With that chili it is very delicious. Now we move on to the oxtail. (speaking in foreign language) - One of the best in Rio. - All this oxtail is very tender. Like butter, huh. You're going to want to lick it all, it's delicious. Just add a little bit of chili oil to that.
It's like it melts ultra tender in your mouth. That's awesome, follow up with some vegetables. I think that's watercress. It has that freshness, it has that green flavor. I love it, that it breaks up the richness of the oxtail. And it is also served with a little potato on the side. And finally the steak, the meat. Oh wow, it almost tastes dry aged. It almost has that complexity, cheese flavor and real quality meat. Add some chili, chili to this. That meat is tender, very tasty. (speaking in foreign language) - Okay, Man, these guys are so cool.
Very brave. Man, he saw that we, I mean, the food wasexcellent, but he saw that we loved the chili sauce. She gave us this whole bottle. Oh man, that's it, that's from the heart. That's amazing, one of the coolest memories ever. And this is the kind of bottle you'd like to eat, but I'd like it to be next to my computer in my office while I'm editing videos. This is a trophy. Very obrigado, man, very obrigado. From here we headed to the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, two of the most famous beaches in Rio, probably in the world.
We arrive at the world famous Ipanema beach. This is right at the end of Copacabana beach, where we will go next. But the beach is a very long pile of sand. It's so sunny, it's so iconic. This is also known as a very high-end neighborhood of Rio. And that's why there are many fashion stores. There are a lot of condos, very high-end condos. The beach, the beach is beautiful. And we will meet your friend on the beach. What is he for? - Serves something like iced tea. - Awesome. - And in a barrel there is only iced tea.
The others, like lime juice, lemon juice. - Awesome. - And you can mix. - And just walk on the beach. - Walk, there it is right there, Marcelo. -Marcello. - Accept credit cards. - Ha ha, accepts credit cards. - Credit card and debit card. (speaking in a foreign language) (speaking in a foreign language) - Obrigado. This is Rio's iconic drink, half tea, half lemonade, I love the setup. Take the credit card in the middle. What a wonderful guy, he likes to walk up and down the beach, there's nothing like a refreshing drink. Oh yes, wow, very good, very good.
It's so refreshing, it's cold. You taste the tea, you taste the freshness of the lemon. It's sweet, it's a beach drink. The beach is stunning, the sand is stunning, the water is clear and blue, the sandbar is huge. And that view of the mountains, the clouds, the green jungle in the background, is spectacular, just as the beach is impressive. Rio is awesome. (speaking in foreign language) - Then this is also something to eat on the beach. - You have to eat it. - It is the iconic Rio, a beach snack. Balloon, it's called Balloon, right? -Balloon, yes. - Balloon, and it is cassava, tapioca, - Starch. - Starchy, crunchy, something like puffs.
Yes, you can feel that they are like puffs. They are almost like onion ring puff pastries. - Health. - I like it, but I like it. - Oh yes, you can try the cassava, it has that bitter taste. It's very, very airy, it's like one of those things that you bite into, and once it hits your saliva, it just collapses and becomes nothing in your mouth. - It is good to eat it while drinking tea. - They are somewhat addictive. Let's see if I can fit a whole one in my mouth. (speaks in foreign language) - The next step, one of the most emblematic drinks to drink on the beach or throughout Rio is the caipirinha.
For a caipirinha, first you drink a lime. He likes to cut up a whole lime, put it in a little bucket with a little bit of sugar, mash it up, and he's mashing it up from time to time and then there will definitely be some cachaca involved. Just a couple of ice as well and crush it with the lime as well. (speaking in foreign language) - He literally puts a whole cup of cachaca in there, shakes it in that Tupperware until it's completely foamy. Brazil on the beach, that foam, those shocking skills. So it's simply sugar and lime cachaca.
That's a beach drink. That's tart, sparkling, strong, icy, refreshing and citrusy. That's very strong, I'm just going to take a couple sips, I just wanted to try it because it's an iconic Brazilian drink, a Rio drink. But that's really strong. Ciao, obrigado. (speaking in foreign language) - Obrigado. - Obrigado. - From here we go down the beach to the next beach, which is Copacabana. And this is such a long beach, it's amazing how, I mean Rio de Janeiro, it's huge, it's a huge city, but there are so many beaches and not just the coast, but yes, the sandy beaches that are clean. and swimmable, it's impressive.
Oh yeah, that's very refreshing, very cool. There is simply nothing purer. I say it every time I drink a coconut. Copacabana Beach is a four-kilometer stretch of sand. And behind it, although it is blocked by buildings, you can see the tip of it, there is the Sugar Loaf, in Portuguese it is called Pao de Acucar, and it is called Sugar Loaf, wow, take a few steps back. . It is called Sugar Loaf because it looks like sugar loaves, how they molded Brazilian sugar. And at Copacabana beach, Sugarloaf was a little bit far, so we just drove, this is called Playa Roja in an area called Urca, and this is another beautiful beach, just a small beach, a bay with rocks, huge rocks . pillars on each side.
This is another stunning beach, another stunning one right in the heart of Rio. (upbeat music) We'll quickly stop at a place called Bar Urca, which is a legendary corner restaurant since 1939. It's like a takeout counter. You can stop there, you can have a snack, you can have a drink, but then a lot of people shop and then they go across the street where they have a shelf overlooking the sea and they sit on the wall. - The camarao empanada. - Empanada de camarao which is a bit, it is a sponge cake, a pastry filled with camarao, which are shrimp, almost like they crumble in your fingers when you pick them up and then it looks crunchier on top and then softer on top.
The bottom. It's like the kind of dough that just sticks to your lips like lipstick when you take a bite. Oh, chilis, thanks, man. Yes, so incredibly crumbly and buttery. If you're not careful, it's like you take a bite and the whole thing falls apart on your finger because it's so soft, incredibly brittle. You've got a little bit of shrimp in there, the olive. We are going to go to another restaurant, buteco type, it is a buteco that is a, it is a bar but a restaurant with a lot of food. It's got really good food, and then we also have more street food to cover, so we're on our way.
I think it used to say buteco, but it's actually bocaco, and it is, yes, it's a bar, it's a neighborhood restaurant. They have it, they specialize in all types of food. - Oh, here we have sambiquira. - What's that? - Look, crispy sambiquira, can I? It's the chicken butt. - Yes. - Look. (speaking in foreign language) - Boteco is the kind of place where you can find all kinds of dishes, especially many meat dishes, many like fries, fried meat and usually with drinks too. Well, we start with bolinho de feijoada. And bolinho is like a small snack, but feijoada is beans, so there should be beans here.
Oh that's like a whole feijoada experience, like wrapping it in a little bit, a little bit, a little bit and then fried, oh that's amazing, there's kale in the middle, you can definitely taste the pork too and then that crisp edge. . I'm going to put hot sauce on it. How long has this place been around? - 60 years, not this bar, but another bar. - Making bars. - But he has been running a boteco for 60 years. - He has been running liquor stores for 60 years. He's 75 now, so he started when he was 15. (speaking in foreign language) It's pork leg, but it looks like ham.
It looks like it's been cured, it looks like it's been salted and smoked, um, and then you squeeze in some lime and serve it with onion and olives on top, and then you eat it with mustard. Wow, slices of ham with onion, that mustard is wonderful. Like the Boteco culture, is it for dinner or is it before dinner? - No, actually it's for the whole day, usually after lunch. But it's like the whole day, usually on weekends and holidays. - But it's like a snack. - Yes, something like tapas. - Snacks or like a home-cooked meal? - No, no, it's not a homemade meal.
It's just more snacks and drinks. - As snacks with drinks. - But during lunch, some boats serve food. - And then, this type of licked vegetable like a fried fritter with onion on top as well. It almost looks like a fluffy, battered tortilla. Oh, not at all like an omelet, more like a pancake, like a fluffy dough, okay, we have one more plate. Some fried pork with skin on, so it's like chicharrón and pork together. And then the fried chicken butts. - Sambiquira. - And it's like the entire chicken tail fin, fatty material completely fried to a crisp.
But it's golden, it looks delicious. - Health. - Health. It is delicious, fried until crispy. There's something crunchy, something chewy in there and a little bit greasy and juicy and here's the pork. I'm going to add a little bit of that sauce. Oh, that pork is completely fried to a crispy, meaty, chewy deliciousness. Yes, it is a dangerously tasty pork sandwich. Okay, he just brought out his little sampler bowl of fried eggplant. That's amazing too, it's dangerously crunchy, like you could chew on it all afternoon. Okay, we're about to leave, but the owner really wanted us to stay to try his fried scarlet eggplants.
It looks like it's coated in batter and then topped with a little garlic. Oh, that's hot. Oh that's amazing, oh that, that's delicious, I love this scarlet eggplant, it has that bitterness and then melts in your mouth with the crispy batter. - I name it (speaking in a foreign language) - Good obrigado. -Good obrigado. - Very obrigado. (speaking in foreign language) - What a nice man, what an amazing man. He wanted us to stay, like he just wanted us to stay, he says, "More food, more food, more food." Awesome, amazing guy, wow, what a legend. From here, we'll head back into the city center towards Copacabana, where we'll finish with one last street food snack.
It's another thing you have to eat when you're in Rio. (speaking in foreign language) - Chicken ass. - The chicken butt kebab. - Chicken hearts, we're going to have chicken hearts. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - Yes. (speaking in foreign language) - We are actually literally in the same place where we started this morning, which was right there. Oh, I think we can see some of the sausage drippings down here, but literally right next to it 12 hours later. This is literally 12 hours later. Serves all kinds of different kebabs. There are meat kebabs, there are chicken butts.
There is chicken, there is, there is a variety of many things. They're like, oh, cool, they're kofta. Kofta Skewers, oh I love how he likes to stack them three times, so even the fully cooked ones are smoked until they are bought, until they are bought. -His wife, Valeria, cooks amazing food, so she will serve some side dishes on the side. - Yes, fantastic. (speaking in a foreign language) (speaking in a foreign language) - Obrigado. (speaking in foreign language) - Obrigado. It's great to make a whole meal on a stick if you take that meat kebab and then she dips it into a bucket, a Tupperware of cassava powder.
That way, you have the meat covered with cassava powder, so it's like you have starch. It's like the equivalent of a bun having a little extra starch to go with the meat, even though it's still primarily meat. Add a little sauce, sweet. Oh, and these are the chicken butts, right, a whole skewer of chicken butts. That's a lot of fat on a skewer. Oh, that's amazing, oh, that's so crunchy, so crunchy, so fatty, you've got that dried cassava powder, which gives it some body, some starch, some filling, and then with that spicy, vinegary sauce. Well, that's good, that's good. - Sambiquira, man. - Man, that's amazing. - Sambiquira right here. - It smells great. - Dude, and tapioca is a great move. - You have to sauce it, that will do it, man. (speaking in foreign language) - Right on the street.
Oh yes, crunchy actually, very greasy. (speaking in foreign language) This is the kofta kebab, there is also cheese inside. Man, he's a character, he just told me to turn off the camera and eat, so I'll keep the camera on but eat. Oh man, huh. It's too spicy to eat in one bite, but it's extraordinarily tasty. Oh, salt it. OMG the kofta kebabs are wonderful. (speaking in foreign language) - Let's take a photo of him, he's going to take the photo, (speaking in foreign language) - Obrigado. And he gets a lot of business because of this intersection and then right behind me, that's like a motorcycle, a motorcycle taxi station, so people wait in line to take a motorcycle up the hill.
And that's why it's too tempting for most people. They can't resist the smell. The aroma just draws people in. And just like them, you see a lot of people lining up here, we're moving to their buffet line, which is amazing home-cooked food, literally brought in from their house down the street. Is there any meat in there or is it just beans? - Ah, yes, sausage. - Ah OK. (speaking in foreign language) - Something like Brazilian chicken salad? - You got it. (speaking in a foreign language)-he adds a little rice, he adds a little pasta, he adds a little feijao tropeiro, which are beans with chorizo. -Yes, he adds chicken hearts, chicken hearts. - And on top he put chicken heart skewers and a little more cassava powder. - Put your heart. (speaks in foreign language) - Very good, Guilherme, this is the last dish of the day.
Wow, those hearts are amazing. Fresh off the grill, salty, bouncy, with those onions and that salad. It's like a takeaway Rio Styrofoam box of delights. - Amazing. - I love it with those onions with that mixture with the cassava with the chili sauce with those carrots, I eat the whole package, everything like, oh a little bit of the feijao that I bought, feijao tropeiro. And it tastes so good when youI like to mix everything. You may not even know what you're eating on your fork, but it's amazing comfort food on the streets of Rio. I love it, I love the people, I love the food, I love the atmosphere.
