I don't want to just drag her around here. So how is it possible that we took our dog outside and he didn't go to the bathroom and he comes in and instantly goes to the bathroom? Well, we need to talk about puppies' attention spans. They get distracted by everything. And many times, even though they know they need to go to the bathroom and we know they need to go to the bathroom, we take them outside and a leaf passes by, or the wind is coming from another direction, or there is an interesting ant on the ground. .

All of those things distract our puppies from the task at hand, which is going to the bathroom. I've been out here for five or 10 minutes of Piper, trying to be a little boring and trying to keep her a little more focused on the task at hand. But there are too many things out here to distract her. So I'll pick her up in her arms and we'll go back inside her. And that's where she'll probably come into play the most important point of home

training

. What do you do when you come back in? Well, it's important for a couple of things to happen.
And the first thing that will happen is that you will supervise your puppy. And that literally means having eyes on your pup. You can't just let them wander because you'll miss some of the signals your pup might give. When they remember that they actually need to go to the bathroom. You may see a small change in their behavior, going from simply wandering to

stop

ping and looking or sniffing the ground or even starting to circle around and sniff the ground. These are the times when you can take the dog outside and encourage him to go outside. But if you don't pay attention to them, you will miss those signs.
So what is it really like to supervise our puppy? Well, you know, I talked about having eyes on them all the time, but she also has a little leash or line that she drags. That I can step on it or control it easily. She can't run away. I have a couple of great chew bones here for her to focus on and I've managed the space a bit. She has no freedom in the house. So let's say I'm doing a little bit of work here at the counter. I can really control every part of her life. Then I can see that she is chewing the bone properly.
If she decides to chew something else, I can quickly interrupt her. And if I see those signs that she needs to go

potty

, I can quickly get her out of it. The other thing you can do is use your box. A crate is a fantastic house training tool and something that when you can't directly supervise your puppy, as I just mentioned, you can use to manage him a little more and prevent him from making those mistakes around the house. Puppies usually will. Not going to the bathroom in an appropriately sized box. That's where they sleep. That is the nature of the dog.
So when you bring them back inside, put them in the box, leave them there for a few minutes or so, but keep an eye on them because you will notice that again there will be a little change in their behavior. Maybe they'll move a little more. They may start to complain a little. And that's the cue so you can then take them out of the box, take them right outside again and encourage them to go to the bathroom. When you're working on house training, there are fairly common times when your dog will probably need to go

potty

.
Every time you put them in the box, they must come out before going in. Every time you take them out of his box. After a nap, they need the opportunity to go to the bathroom. And any time before or after a major job, they'll likely need to use the bathroom. And the other thing is that you really need to keep a mental note of when was the last time your puppy went to the bathroom, puppies will have to go to the bathroom quite often. And if he's working on housetraining, you need to be proactive about removing them.
I'm talking to you now, but I'm paying a lot of attention to Piper right now. You have to be aware of what your puppy is doing, because you can leave him outside. But if you don't actually see them leave, how do you know they're gone? If you're checking your social media, maybe they were, maybe they weren't. And when they go, it's also important to keep an eye on how much they actually spent. Did they really empty themselves or did they just pee a little and then get distracted and walk away? You have to keep eyes on the puppy at all times.
I want to make sure our dogs know that the right thing to do is to go potty outside in a, what does that look like? Well, we want to praise them and we want to pet them. And we want to use them as a reward for the puppy. Often if I use food, the puppies can get mixed messages. Um, the act of going to the bathroom itself is quite rewarding. The mere sensation of going to the bathroom is really pleasant for the puppy. So we don't need to add a food reward to that, but I can praise my puppy.
I can pet them. I can tell you what a good job you are doing at that particular moment. Our rewards. They're not always just food. You are a reward for your puppy and that praise is what will let him know that he is doing a great job. So Piper and I are playing around a little. You know, I know that puppies usually need to go potty, um, after they've played. So instead of putting her in a crate and trying again later, I'm going to see if I can encourage her to go potty with that little game.
Now the fun thing about this is that I'm actually training a little bit too. I'm teaching him to throw with me and return the toy to me. When I ask for everything from her while encouraging her to go to the bathroom. So I'm working on home training and general training at the same time. Good girl. Get that thing. Get that thing. Good. Yes. Good girl. Very good girl. I understand it so well. Now Piper just gave us a big yawn and soon we will put her in her cage so she can take a little nap because she is getting tired.
This is quite mental for her to be here with us and do all this work. But again it is important that she gives him a chance to go potty before putting him in her crate for a short nap. Then I'm going to pick her up. We'll get her out of it. Let's try it again. It's great to have this

plan

in place and it's great to follow it to the letter, but there's a really important point about home training that a lot of people overlook: home training is actually two parts. The first part of the course is to teach your dog to go potty outside.
But the second and sometimes more important part is teaching your dog not to go to the bathroom inside. How do we teach them not to go to the bathroom at home? Well, I'll tell you about it with my dogs. I like to catch them in the act, Hey, hey, hey, I caught you, I caught you. For you, I like to take the opportunity to interrupt the behavior and then take them outside and show them how to be right. Then what do I do? Well, a lot of times I really supervise my puppy and keep a close eye on him.
And the moment the dog starts going to the bathroom in the house, Hey, great. Catch you. And you're going to see this. In fact, some of you may find that your dog simply turns around, looks at you, and starts urinating. That is the time when you should interrupt them and, in a way, scare them. Now, I don't want to scare the puppies and I don't want to worry them, but I do want to do something that will get their attention and interrupt the transmission a little bit. Hey, something like that to quickly get their attention. . And of course, the moment they stop urinating, I will simply pick them up and take them outside and then calmly encourage them again to do so.
Now here's the really important part of this. Surprising your pup is one part of this, but I need my dog to know when he is right. So when I take them outside and they're done hanging out, I'll really make a big deal of it by praising them and petting them and letting them know that's exactly what I want. So, on the one hand, I just quickly stop the behavior I don't like. And then I prepare them to do what I like and I really recognize that. And they start to pull themselves together quickly, they go to the bathroom outside, they get the good things, they get the praise, they get the pets, but if they start coming in, they hear that weird startled noise that we make, and we feel like the negative side of this.
But it's about teaching them what to do.
