Step By Step Guide To Flawless Balayage

May 30, 2021
Hello beautiful, today we are going to do some

balayage

. I love

balayage

because it's the easiest way to enhance a look, even if your hair is brown. Adding a little dimension with a little balayage is beautiful and then also doing something really very blonde with balayage. It's beautiful and everything in between is also beautiful, so today I'm going to show you the easiest and least optimistic way to do balayage. This is a beginner way to do balayage. I'm not going to do any really complicated patterns or techniques that you don't know. You don't need to be super exact and precise with every little bit of paint you put on your head for it to look really pretty and be super impactful, so if you want to learn how to do easy balayage, follow me, let's do it.
step by step guide to flawless balayage
What I'll need today is just a few simple things, obviously, a bowl, some developer. I'm going to use this volume 30. I almost always use 30 volumes. I like to reduce my time rather than lower or increase the developer, so if I'm using 20 and I'll leave it on my head for an hour. I prefer to use 30 and leave it on my head for about 30 minutes or so because I'm very quick with my painting and pretty much everything I do. With hair I like to use 30 volumes most of the time. You can also put some olaplex or any type of bond building treatment into your mix.

You will also need powder developer. This is how I like to store mine. It's kind of ugly, but okay, this is just a guy, my identity bag with bleach powder and obviously we're going to need a brush. I'm going to use this brush for art frames. It's great, although it has very flexible bristles and very fine bristles. on the top I love that for painting, if it's too hard and stiff it gets a little difficult, you can't really get in there and make good strokes, we'll use some gloves and I have four clips here and these are great because it holds a lot of hair to At the same time, lastly, you will definitely need a back comb.

I love my wire combs. You guys are looking for really nice combs that are a little pricey but really work well so we're going to use this to section the hair, I switched bowls, I felt a clear moment today, I'm going to mix this into a thick creamy formula, how much The thicker it is, the less it will slide into your hair, but you don't want it to be runny and thin either. because that will create bleeding and it will be a mess for you, you know, some people use scales for this, some people eyeball it, I'm one of those eyeball people, a good mixing ratio would be two parts powder to one part developer and that should give you a great consistency so that's exactly how I like my lightener now that we've mixed it up let me grab my client she just came into the salon so I'm going to grab her and roll her on.

I put an apron on my sleeves and prepare to do balayage. Hello Miss Manny Quinn, what are you looking to do with your hair today? Okay, that's ugly, we won't do that, so she'll have this kind of look, very cute, I picked it up. For her, however, you know you want to make sure your client knows that it may take more than one session to get the desired result. Depending on what you're looking for, we're going to go with this beautiful style combined with some statement pieces towards the bottom and around your face, now it's going to be divided in the middle, he told me, and then we're just doing four quadrants, guys, and There we have it guys, the simplest and most basic separation you can do, so let's do diagonal backs, here come. that's what you want, this is going to make the highlights very blended when you do diagonals, you're going to be blending when all of this hair is straight across this hair, you're just going to get hints of highlights within each section, so let's say if you take this and you separate it, the highlights will be all over the place rather than a hard line running through it.
Now we'll work in a more horizontal way as we get to the front, but first we're going to do some diagonals because I like to blur the back and a little bit harsher around the face because that's how sunlight usually hits you. very strong here and a little bit lighter in the back, that's okay and I feel like Balayage at the moment is about having a bit of a natural look, however, we still want that impactful shine and that kind of almost streaky look that people are looking now so one of the most important things when doing balayage is that your tension is good so you want to make sure there are no tangles in the hair because you would hate to highlight a tangle in the hair so we'll take this section and we will take it out of the head at 90 degrees if the section was horizontal.
It would be like this, if it's diagonal it's going to go the same diagonal way as the part and I like to start in the middle and work my way up, okay we're not pushing the hair down which will give you weird spots. I don't want that and I like to highlight a couple of bright highlights and then I like to blur the center. If you need to wipe off excess bleach on the back of your hand, you can do that too. Now you can mix it up and I like to go up and down and not just go down, but try to focus on the downward movement as much as possible.
Sometimes you can create a little frizz on your scalp if you start going up and down. I like it very vigorously, but yeah, that's how it should look and you know, something I've learned while doing a lot of balayage. It doesn't have to be so perfect. Okay, it's not worth it most of the time. Put some type of darker toner in your hair so you can also take your brush horizontally and blend it up like that. Now this looks pretty good to me, I just want to make a couple of adjustments before continuing with the tips. doing full saturation because we want a really bright, impactful highlight at the end, faded into a softer highlight on top, so I literally take it in my hand and add a ton of lightener to it, literally squeezing the hair to make sure it fit well It's all there and you can see at the bottom that this is what it should look like.
You can also turn it over and mix it a little more. I like to look underneath and blend in the last stroke you want a little bit. make sure there's a good amount of lightener on those ends before you let go, so that's our first section. It was super simple if it's leaning like this to one side you did it right your tension was good so congratulations and if I didn't try harder next time that's fine then we'll move to the other side and do the exact same thing on the other side, as you can see, these are very large sections and that will be fine because it is the underside of her hair we want it to be a little bit darker back here than in the front of her hair.
If your client or whoever you are doing this to really likes putting their hair up in a ponytail, I would recommend it. going under here and putting a lot of highlights underneath um, you can lift this up and paint completely underneath too, but my girl doesn't wear her hair in a ponytail, she doesn't care, she likes the bottom a little bit dark and so do I. The second section is finished, so this is what it looks like. You know, it looks a little crazy, but I promise it won't be when I'm done. Now you can use plastic wrap to cover your sections, but sometimes it's not necessary.
I just like to layer the hair on top, it's a little risky since this is not a balayage clay lightener. You know, you can buy a lightener that has a protective environment when it dries. However, when I do this, I just like to position the hair. Sometimes comb your hair very gently on top and do that moment and don't worry about it bleeding because it really shouldn't if you've done it correctly and obviously just make sure the person doesn't like to sit on it or do something crazy, but I just don't even use plastic anymore, it's not worth it, we'll leave a little loose hair between each section, that's how much I'll leave.
I want this to be, you know, a good amount of highlights. her, so we're going to take the next section and this one is going to be a little bit thinner than the last one just because I want this one to be a little bit lighter, so again with the tension just making sure you get out of the head. and keeping that tension there all the time now for this one, you see, I just went to the sides and I'm trying to make it very bright and a little more blended in the center and I go all the way to the top. your roots and then add a lot to those ends, literally like icing, you guys want as much lightener to really lighten well, you can also use foils that way if the person's hair is really dark to begin with and you want a really light result.
You can get it all in one day. Using aluminum foil will make the lightener develop faster and make it lighter, so there are two sections down on this side, as you can see, they are placed on top of each other. This hair is on the side and it's all good, you know nothing is touching, I'm not using clay lightener and everything will be beautiful, okay, let's do the same thing on this side, so we move back, we just do the same thing over and again. Once again until we get to the top and while I'm doing this I just want to share with you a little secret so at first when I did balayage I thought it was one of the most devious things I had ever thought of doing.
It took me so long. for me to do it and a lot of this is because I trained in a very technical room, they make us do very complex techniques and we will make sure that our work is absolutely perfect when we're done, which I realized when I walked in. the flat there and I started to do my own clients and in my own way I am a much more artistic person where I like to look at the head and decide how I want to do my balayage so normally I don't like to go with certain patterns for everyone, I normally look at the head and I find out where the chalice is, how the person's hair is growing and how they use it on a day-to-day basis and what their goals are, and I build on that once you write.
After you learn the basics, you can really change it up and do all kinds of really cool things so that each person has a balayage look perfectly tailored to their needs and their hair, so normally here I'll do like this with the hair and push it. Go back to the scalp and see where the hair naturally parts. Now, usually people have an interesting calyx that comes back here and sometimes they separate like this naturally, so I'll put a highlight on this and then another highlight on this. When your hair is naturally parted in that cowlic formation, you will have highlights on both sides. um now I miss a lot of Quinn's hair laying flat so I'm just going to do some horizontal sections that way she gets really stunning highlights right on the top of her hair and it looks really shiny and beautiful.
I'm going to skip a section before we start just because we did a section underneath to make sure it doesn't go over the other hair and then I'm just going to cut away and make these two sections look really nice, I'm just going to add a full saturation on the part bottom and this piece will be done and for the next section I won't skip any hair, I'll just do the next one. section right on top of the previous one, so that's the back, all done, it was very easy, it was like 15 minutes of work, now I'm going to move on to the front section, do one off camera and then I'll show you how I did it. it's on the other side so I just completed the next side and I know some of you will be like that that one looks really messy red um it's not it will be super cute and it also looks like I haven't missed any hair in the middle. but I'll show you what I did now.
What we're going to do is we're going to part this top part of her hair at the recession of her and now we're going to part a little bit of hair around the hairline in this part. It's the part where you're going to paint at the end, this would be like her baby hairs and we don't want them to break and then we're going to divide the rest down here, we're going to paint this last thing, all in two. sections and we're really going to make it super impactful and you'll see I like to just braid this section out of the way just because the clips tend to be a little bit small and they tend to not hold the hair very well so just a few braids and that's Everything no longer gets in the way.
Now our first section is a diagonal back. Make sure you direct the hair the way it is parted and really grab it well. Add some stronger pieces to the sides, so now We're getting closer to the top of my girl's head and we're going to bring this triangle out so it's horizontal now because the horizontal highlights give you more definition on top. We want super impactful bright lights. This is where every client looks important. thing to keep in mind is if you like to put a streak of color in your hair like that in one place you don't want to want a really smooth finish uh with the bleach in your hair that way you don't get light spots and dark spots so yeah there's less lightener like up here, you'll get lighter spots, which will be good because we're going from a darker color to a lighter color, we want that gradient up here, but if you put a lot of lightener in one spot at the ends it will be lighter and It's going to look gross, so don't do that, okay, we're on the final piece inthe top of our head and we have to do the front pieces, but this one since we have this is divided in the front and I'm going to go very high in the front.
I don't want to add a highlight here because it's going to be a big part of the highlight that I'm going to highlight. Add a very bright highlight in the center like this and then I'm going to blend the rest into that center highlight and our last two pieces are the most important of all, This is where everyone looks first, okay, and this is what you We're going to see when you pull your hair back, so you better do it right, baby, so let's undo that braid and split this underneath, let's go Let's lift it 90 degrees from his head and let's paint. this whole section all the way to the roots, okay, we don't have to mix much, just get there, it's also good to do this at the end because this hair up here is very fragile and generally develops faster and Moving on to the last and most important piece of all, make sure you adjust your client's head as you go, don't break your back, okay, let's go up here and do a very correct highlight that way she gets those beautiful ones.
Money pieces, honey, I'm going to paint the back of that piece and then I'm going to bring everything else basically to the scalp. We're done, we're done with the humidity, so we're just done with this size. This is what it looks like. looks fabulous it's developing really well the back is almost ready to rinse so what I like to do is rinse by section so the back we did first we'll rinse it first and then this side and then this side so you can time it however you want 35 to 45 minutes is enough time for your balayage to process.
It's all based on hair type, hair texture, everything that's going on with that person's hair, so just check it and take your best judgment on when it's done processing and then do the same amount of time on each side. and rinse them by section. I'm going to do that, rinse everything, put some toner in here and I'll show you the final result. Okay guys, so this is the final look, oh. OMG it looks amazing, I wish this was my hair, honestly that's how when you pull your hair back it gets this beautiful lightness, I mean it's just beautiful, it's so natural looking.
