Some Good News with John Krasinski Ep. 1

Jun 06, 2021
Good evening everyone, although it is clearly afternoon, and welcome to SGN. Juan, what is SGN? Good question. For years I've been wondering why there isn't a

news

program dedicated entirely to

good

news

. Well, desperately seeking my solution elsewhere, I reached out to all of you this week to ask, nay, beg, for

some

good

news. And boy, did you deliver. After reading those responses and the incredibly moving stories that accompanied them, I thought, "Okay, that's enough of the world. Why not us? Why not now?" Ladies and gentlemen, this is your fault and this is SGN. I'm John Krasinski and if it's not already clear, I have no idea what I'm doing.

And now

some

good news. And it was a week of good news, because yes, without a doubt we are all going through an incredibly difficult time. But through all the anxiety, through all the confusion, all the isolation, and all the Tiger King, somehow the human spirit still found a way to break through and blow us all away. Nowhere did this seem more powerful than in the heroism of the global health community. Now these men and women work day in and day out. They are putting their own health at risk. They are risking their own lives for complete strangers, and they do it without even needing to say thank you.

Well, luckily the thanks came anyway and the heartfelt thanks were seen on a global scale. In Spain, police lined the street in front of their local hospital, turned on their lights and applauded in gratitude for the hospital staff. In London, an ICU nurse told her boyfriend that she didn't think there would be applause. She was wrong. Even at sea, NATO sailors and personnel applauded their healthcare heroes at home from their command centers, the decks of their ships and even underwater. And the love and appreciation was felt here, at home, in the U.S. Whether from the balconies of illuminated apartment buildings to the old, up-close-and-personal kind where a man holds up a sign that simply says thanks to the hospital staff for saving his wife's life.

And of course, you can find more of those amazing images and videos on our Facebook page or, let's be honest, pretty much anywhere else on the internet. For example, if you're looking for a more heartbreaking music video version, just check out this guy's page. Or this boy. And the good news didn't end there. Oh no, even in the strange world of isolation, good news was happening everywhere. Evan Era Magic starts off by making kindness look super easy as he makes a driver's delivery extra special. "What's up man?" "Can I have one of these?" "Yes, absolutely, it's free." "Oh man, you're a lifesaver.

Thank you." There were reports that an honest guardian angel was seen mowing the grass in someone's backyard. No, it turns out that it was retired paratrooper Art Crews who kept the promise he made to his neighbor, who is currently deployed overseas, that he would always be there for him and his family. In Maine, a local man bought 100 lobsters to help a lobsterman. He then went to each of his neighbors and gave them a fully cooked lobster dinner. In Ireland, and no, I won't embarrass myself with that accent, three generations passed in social distancing when a grandfather met his grandson for the first time.
We also got to experience the love of three generations this week. For starters, a couple from Fredericksburg, Virginia, was supposed to go to Paris when their trip was canceled. Luckily the romance was not like that. She said yes, by the way. In case anyone was wondering. I'm alone in this room. In Michigan, a married couple proved that the party never has to end. They put on their old wedding suits and laughed all day. And in Alabama, for 81-year-old John Klein and his sweet Ann, marriage may be old-fashioned, but it's still more romantic than any other out there.
Ann, who is in a nursing home for Alzheimer's patients, can no longer have visitors. Well, that won't stop John from finding a way to sing to his girlfriend. That last video was brought to us by our friends at inspiremore.com. SGN may be a new site for good news, but we are by no means the first. So when you're looking for a smile on the Internet, check out any of the good news sites, from Tank's Good News to goodnewsnetwork.org, any of them. And on a personal note, this week brought a lot of good news because it has been 15 years since this haircut was born.
That's right, it was the 15th anniversary of The Office, and to learn more about that story we now turn to our entertainment correspondent, Steve Carell. Steve! John: "Does this work? Thank God for Nancy. I literally just saw Nancy like your mom said, 'Wait, let me...' Welcome to this highly produced show." Steve: "I like your sign." John: "Thank you very much. By the way, my daughters did it, so-." Steve: "Beautiful. This will be the graph at the end of this." John: "Perfect. I love it. We both look stylish. That's who I am 24/7." Steve: "I guarantee the bottom half of what you're wearing doesn't match the top half." John: "I'm definitely using jams if anyone remembers what they are.
Oh my goodness. So, Steve, this week marked a big anniversary for you and me. We were on a little show called The Office, and this was our 15th week, I want I mean, I was a waiter when I got that job. I was 23 years old and after the pilot I went back to waiting tables because I was sure that nothing was going to happen with that. I came into this with that vibe. . Steve: "It's such a happy surprise that after all these years people are still tuning in and finding it even today. It's great." John: "People always ask this question, so I have to ask you: do you have, obviously, not one, but among your best memories, what were some of your favorite memories?" Steve: "Our whole exchange was around the micro flat screen TV. 'I finally broke down and bought a plasma TV.
Check it out.'" John: "The dinner episode where you said, and when people come over... you're just... And it just went so far. I don't think I've ever laughed harder in my life." Steve: "The articulated screen. Look at this, it folds up. There's the wall. I'm sorry. Oh my God." Steve: "I think most of the memories have to do with things we shared as a cast. You know, when we were doing Fun Run and it was about 105 degrees outside. 'Fettuccine Alfredo. Time to load the car.'" John: "I remember when you did the episode where you played Santa and you were so upset because Phyllis was already Santa.
So you were asking people to come sit on your lap, and Brian, thank God was chosen to sit on your lap." lap. Steve: "What would you like for Christmas, little one?" Brian: "I don't know. I didn't know you were going to ask me that. Steve: "What did you think was going to happen?" Brian: "I didn't know that. No one had ever let me sit on their lap before. Steve: "Okay, just give me some toys, please." John: "I was supposed to be the button in the scene where I they cut and I made a Jim face. I have never been there.
I was never physically there, but by the time they got to the frying pan, I was already out. Either he was on the floor or he had left the room." Steve: "Part of what was so fun is that everyone in the cast supported everyone else. People would step back when it was time for other people to shine and celebrate. Like when you came in as Dwight that day, it was crazy to see Jim play Dwight. And you are a very good impressionist in general. I don't think that's something people know." John: "Michael!" Rainn: "Oh, that's funny.
Michael!" John: "And at the same time, without a doubt, the most emotional I've ever been on a set. And I know we've talked about it, but I was hoping they wouldn't do your scene and my scene where you leave last. I think you and I count. I think there were 17 or 19 takes in which not a single audible word came out. It was just action and then you and I left..." John: "I think we should save the goodbyes for tomorrow at lunch." Steve: "Oh, okay." John: "And then tomorrow I can tell him what a great boss it was.
Best boss I've ever had." Steve: That was a tough question. It was really... it was tough. Some of my fondest memories, personally or professionally, are intertwined and connected to that show." John: "Without a doubt. And listen, I know everyone is talking about a reunion. Hopefully one day we can come together as people and we can all say hello." Steve: "Just seeing your face is cool." John: "I miss you so much, it's so good to see you and thank you so much for doing this. We're trying to start a news network just for good news, and wow, are you good news?
I really believe that." You're going to do something for yourself, Steven. I love you and I can't wait to see you very soon." Steve: "Say hi to Emily and I love you." John: "Who's that? Goodbye." Steve: "Ah!" John: "Ladies and gentlemen, Steve Carell." And finally that brings me to my favorite good news of the week. In California, a fifteen-year-old girl finally returned home after her last chemo treatment. And well, her friends threw a big social distancing party. For more on this story, let's go to my new heroine, Coco Juan: "Hello Coco: "Hello John: “Nice to meet you.” Coco: “Nice to meet you too.” John: “My goodness, this is a very exciting honor for me.
You're my newest and greatest hero." Coco: "Thank you so much!" John: "You obviously live in a Hallmark card where no one else drives down your street and everyone cheers and applauds you. How did you feel?" Coco: "I was very surprised. I didn't expect anything. We turned the corner and I saw our friends. And I saw more friends and my family. And I thought, there were so many people there." John: "It was amazing. Your reaction was incredible. It was incredibly, incredibly powerful and amazing to see your reaction." Coco: "Thank you." John: "So, how long has it been since you finished the treatment?" Coco: "I finished the treatment just that Tuesday.
That was my last chemo." John: "That's amazing. Congratulations on that." Coco: "Oh, thank you!" John: "Absolutely. And it's been amazing to see this video go everywhere, and I really don't think I've ever seen such a genuine reaction to a video where everyone was totally and completely blown away. And honestly, you being the Hero, is there anything you want to tell everyone?" Coco: "Yes, there are a lot of people like me going through things who have low immune systems or everyone who won't be extremely affected by this staying at home to protect the people who will be is really surprising.
And it's like Everybody came together to help the people that are going to be affected, which I think is really awesome." John: "That's awesome. The amazing thing is that I am doing this nonsense of starting a good news network and a television show where we only broadcast good news. And I don't know if I can do another one after this because you are the best news ever. You are like the microphone of all good news. It's over. Coco: "Well, I'm excited to keep seeing all the good news." I literally only post things that people send me, like your mom.
And I wrote to your mom and told her that I cried for a long time watching that, pure joy. And you guys are great for sharing it with the rest of the world. Coco: "Thank you. Can I say a final thank you to some of my nurses and doctors?" John: "Yes." Coco: "Everyone is working right now. That's why my nurse is at Four West at the CHLA Infusion Center and my nurses and doctors are at City of Hope." 295 00:14:07,700 -- 00:14:11,720 John: "You are so stellar. Thank you so much for spending time with us and telling us your story.
I wish you nothing but the best. And again, Put so many smiles on people's faces. Now it's your turn. You're going to have a lot of things to be happy about." Coco: "Bye, thank you." John: "Holy crap. If that girl isn't the epitome of pure goodness, I don't know what she is. And that's it. That's our show. I'm John Krasinski. SGN here asks you to remember that it doesn't matter." How hard life can be, there are always good things in the world. And see you next time.
