Sewing Machine Mat Tutorial

May 31, 2021
Hi everyone, I'm Vicki from Creative Notions. I promised you we would make a

sewing

machine

mat, so that's what we're doing today. I'd like to start by telling you what you need to gather to prepare to sew. your mat so I'll also have a PDF available on my website and I'll link it below so all you need to do is go and click on it so I'll just show you step by step what we need. Do after I read what you need to get together, so I'm sorry, but I'm going to look at my list. You will need it for your

sewing

machine

mat.

You will need some fat quarters, some scraps, or some fabric. of any kind, it would be perfect to use the eight fat quarters you get in your creative notions box. If you like it, it would fit with your favorite colors because you are going to use them a lot, you will need some yani soft ones. and stable or some leftover batting works great or any type of good stabilizer or a good interface would work well. You will need a swivel clip with a ring with a D ring, one half inch dowel and two quarter inch dowels by 20 inches long now this is optional and this is the modification I made and I will explain why I did it.

More Interesting Facts About,

You will need a fabric marking pin such as a friction pin or chalk. I also like to use a chalk or a chalk pencil. The chalk pencil can break and you may not know which ones they are. You can get them at Hobby Lobby and Michaels and Joanne's, but they may not be called camera snaps. You can also search online at Kem snaps calm and buy many colors and the tools you need. You will have to apply them, but velcro would work well if you like to work with velcro or regular snaps, so on seals of any type of connector you will need some nutshells, some filler like polyfill, either nutshells or rice for our pincushion.

You will need some pins and maybe some groovy clips, possibly a walking foot on your sewing machine, it should help you walk through the layers. You will need your ruler and the fuse interface. We're going to use quite a bit of that, so I'll list it. everything you need in the pattern in the PDF and let's get started so I cut out my 18 by 21 inch top and backing for the mat and then I used some quilt basting spray and sprayed about half way up here. I also cut my smooth and stable and then folded it back and just pushed it down, press it down.
sewing machine mat tutorial
I like to use quilt basting spray because it really holds everything in place really well, doesn't go up the needle on your knee and then smooths it out. You'll also want to flip it over and make sure you've done it on both sides and it looks like I've already done that, but make sure everything is okay. Do this on a piece of paper or wax paper or something like that. like this because it's very sticky and when you put it on other surfaces it's not fun, okay, I'm not sure if you can see this or not, but I took my ruler and I started here in the middle, from one corner to the other. in the other corner and drew a line with my friction pin and then moved my ruler every two inches.
I put this two inch line here, if you can see it, this two inch line right on the line that I drew and then I just moved it. right on top and keeping that line straight and drawn and I've done it in this direction in this direction and then I turned my ruler and I went from this corner to this corner after all my lines are drawn you'll see it's giving me a grid and they look small diamonds, but they look pretty good, so I'm going to take it to my sewing machine and just sew on the lines as they are drawn, go one direction and then turn it and go the other direction and I'll do that and then I'll show you what else do I have and then I took it to the ironing board and pressed all of our marks.
Now I just want to square the edges a little bit. A little bit, I wanted to tell you that I used a 3.0 Leakes stitch to make it a little bit easier to sew and I used my walking foot and that helps with all the layers so I just cut a little bit. Now this is the optional part, you can do it or not, but I did a little. I cut a two and a half inch by 21 inch strip and then took the edges and folded it in half. inch approximately on each end and then I folded each side in half towards the center like this to make a casing and I want to place that casing approximately let's see 10 10 inches approximately from the front side of my mapped sewing machine and the reason why.
What I'm doing is because I want to put a peg inside. I actually shortened this casing just a little bit, maybe 1/2 inch or so to have room in places to find it and then I'll leave this open and after we put the pin in we'll just stitch it closed, so Oh, note to margin here Vanessa Ellis was telling me how her bold stitches make a really nice needle holder, it's not that amazing so I gave it a try. it comes out and it works fine, so I'm going to pin this down a little bit and then sew it on my sewing machine so that Casey opens up, that is, sew it on and then we can put that peg in and the one on the es to help keep this from slipping so that when you fill your pockets with things it won't be so heavy in the front and it keeps sliding towards you, so I'll hurry up and do it now, after this step you're going to want to make your pockets, so what I did with all the pockets was cutting them out and then I put interfacing in the middle, so I cut out my big pocket, the middle pocket, and the small pocket, and then I cut the middle. the width and place the interfacing and then you can sew on top if you want and after you do that I'll show you what's next here we're a few days later they took it off and I was able to We won't go back to that so let's continue making our map for our sewing machine so I laid out my three pockets and sewed the top along the bottom two and then on the second one from the top I drew some lines. with my friction marker and about an inch away, maybe a little over an inch, inch and a quarter and then with my friction marker and then I went ahead and sewed that line all the way to the end and tried it. and my pins a little bit really well or my markers will fit really well now I'm going to put this third pocket back in and I want to go ahead and draw a line here up to where I made the last one for my last line for my pin and then however far apart I you want your pockets to be from here on out, just sew down through all the layers, so I'll do that, okay, this is the hard part, this is the top of my mat. is the back and then this is the two and a half inch by 20 inch piece that I had you fold in half and press.
Now what we're going to do is take your pocket, turn it over and put it in. under your mat like that, so that it's right here, your pockets facing the table and the top of your mat facing up and then take the two and a half inch strip and place the raw edge facing outward, then move along this outer edge and then Every once in a while, through all the layers, wipe and then I'll show you that next we're going to be able to hide the raw edges so that there's nothing left on the back and it's not let's have to put a binding or something, we can quilt all of our pieces and then hide them, okay, so I meant hide the raw edges, not hide the quilted pieces, okay, I've sewn a quarter of an inch up to here now.
I'm going to turn my pocket unit over again and here it is, here, flat, now take this little two and a half inch piece, turn it right side up and pin it in place and then just sew it on or you could use it. a decorative stitch right here that would be fun too. I have a nice flower on my sewing machine so I think I could do that but this is what the back looks like now, there is no seam or there is a seam but no raw edges so I'm going to do that , okay, just sew the edge and icing, so I went ahead and sewed this side as well.
I thought it would be fun and now I don't know why, but I ended up with an extra inch and a half, so I'm going to cut that off now. I want to make my binding for this mat and I'm going to use the method that I used, I actually just used a fat quarter and cut it into twenty. one inch strips two and a half by 21 inch strips, then I'm going to turn my mat inside out and just sew this binding all the way around and then turn it over to the front and sew it that way, that's how I like to do my bindings especially for a project that's quick and easy if I'm making a big quilt that I've been working on for a long time and it's, you know, pieced together and all I sew the binding on the front and then I sew it on the back, but This is just a project that's going to be in the sewing room and it's not really going to matter much, so I'm going to go ahead and sew my trim, so there it goes, okay, and you've got your pockets here. for whatever you want to put in it, so you really only have two cubes, this one here and this one here, because this bottom clips in and is what attaches to the main body, this is where you put the peg in and then that's what is behind.
There seems to be no seams so it's very pretty, should we do anything else to go with it? Okay, first let's make a pin cushion. They are very simple, easy and fast, so you will get a six, six for six. I think it could be. six and a half and put the interfacing on it, fold it in half like this and like that right here and then I'll show you what's next, so on this machine and it's a six inch square, make a quarter inch seam, leave a little bit Opening: Leave a small opening a couple of inches wide so you can turn it around and have a small opening here and then you'll flatten it out so the seam is on top and you don't have to open it up.
This lens you can do it if you want and do it on both ends, so look at quarters on both ends, okay, that gives you this kind of look like a little, I don't know, about flapping or something, okay, now just put the finger there. and take a corner and flatten it, kind of like what you're going to do, you can mark it if you want or you can just look at it like I normally do, maybe go an inch for that corner and then trim it. then you're going to do the same thing on the opposite corner and then the other two spots or the other end, so do the other two quarters, maybe three quarters of an inch, just watch it a little bit or follow the pattern that I'm going to show you.
You probably have it written down to find out, now you have a little square like this, so you're going to turn it over and fill it with nut shells, rice fluff, whatever you have. I like to have a little weight in mind and it shows. like all my weights on the top, which should be on the bottom, but anyway, okay, just push these corners out with your fingers and you'll get a nice square or rectangle. Sorry, go ahead and fill it with your nutshells and your batting or your fluff and then you whip stitch it closed here and you end up with this cute little pin cushion and the reason I wanted that was because I wanted to make a little box. to put it in and this will fit in here, it's not that As hard as you think it might be, so let's do it together and then we'll also make this bag for your yarn and this one clips right in, you probably can't see it, but it clips right in one with a pin on my map and that way it doesn't fall because I've knocked it over no less than ten times, I promise, so we had to have a way to connect the box, it's an eight and a half inch square and if you have it , if you have it. a ruler that's eight inches long makes it really easy, so just cut that square out, use one for the top, you're on the outside and one for the lining, don't do what I just did, that's really bad.
I'm a bad example, well here we go, now we need to be able to have some corners for the box to stand up, so we want to cut a two inch square and two inches from here, so I'm going to take my ruler and turn it over. In fact, I'm going to do it in this direction, see where you can see it best and then I'm only two inches, so what I did was I folded it, made it a little bit slower. I folded my two pieces of fabric in half and then in half again and where all the raw edges are here.
I'm going to place them and I'm going to find a two inch corner on my eight and a half inch ruler and I'm going to place that eight and a half inch ruler where the two inches are. just cover the outside two inches of these squares and I'm going to cut, hopefully it won't move around too much and this is where I don't use. I should use my round mat and then you can, you can also take your scissors to cut off the little edges that you can't get with your rotary cutter, okay, and that gives you this shape right here and then you get pale text.
Sorry peltex or Yanni stabilizer and you're going to I cut it to be the same size so I just used my scissors and cut the corner squares and made sure it was a little bit bigger and then I'll cut it all the way sides, okay? So the next thing I do What I'm going to do is the foot, okay, I'm going to turn this over and it looks like it's my lining or the outside of my bag. I'm not sure which one it's going to be yet, okay where it is, so I'm going to sew just an eighth of an inch around this just to keep it in place, so let's do it, okay, I'm going to take the corners and fold them towards each other.like this and so we'll sew a quarter inch on the four corners and there you have a box, okay, now let's take the lining piece and do the same thing, fold the corners over and do the quarter inch seam.
The whistles are very quick and easy, you can make them for all kinds of things, for gift giving or to maybe give away your cookies for Christmas or whatever, okay, now I'm going to turn this around. I want the outside fabrics on the exterior and the foams on the interior and then your lining is on the interior just sitting like this and then we're just going to put AB, I mean, around the entire exterior and I'm left with a lot of Lightning. I don't have to go around the mat anymore, so I'm going to put my binding on the inside and make sure my edges are lined up and go ahead and attach it like I normally would with anything else and then I'll show you how it turned out.
There is our box, very easy and fast, it is reversible, you can make it however you want, you can take it to the ironing board and flatten the corners, the edges so that the seams are inwards and then just give it a press and it will rise a little best for you and then when you finish the pin cushion it should fit in there without any problem and then you'll have some room here for your clips or your screwdriver or an extra pair of scissors or whatever you want to put in there now let's do the back, this one It's also a very simple bag, that's you, we used the soft stable width and two fabrics and I made a tie and I hooked a pair of scissors here so I can always find them because I lose a lot of things, really a lot, so we'll put them together and we will show you how to cut them after the pieces you will need for your bag you will need an outer piece that is 14 wide by 8 inches long and then you will need your inner piece that is 14 by 10 just a couple of inches longer and then you will need your interfacing or soft and stable that is the same size as your outside, which is 14 by 8, then you will need a scissor, your scissor keychain or your scissor, I don't know what to call it, lanyard and also use the leftover binding, you will need about three and a piece about a half inch by two and a half inches and I just cut this out of my excess binding, so you're going to want to fold the ends in or not, your hands, your sides towards the middle, fold it in half and then sew a seam here and set aside of that, that will go right here in your bag.
You'll also need a D ring and a clip like this to clip the scissors on, so after you sew this piece here, you'll put the D ring on and then I can sew it right here so you have it on hand to sew into the scene and I'll do that , so I went ahead and stoned my smooth, stable piece of outer fabric and now I'm going to fold it in half and make a seam along the side and along the bottom before I do that, I'm going to put down my little ring D shape about two and a half inches on the inside and point inward so it doesn't snag when you sew it on and you can use your paper clips or your sister or your pins and go ahead and pin it in place and then sew so I told you wrong, I told you to sew this seam here making sure you put your little D ring here and then along the bottom, which is wrong, so I can use my no-sew tool and take it out the bottom.
Okay, now my own sewing is done. I sewed this way now I want to make it flat and in the middle here and then sew along the bottom like this with the seam at the top then just turn it inside out and this is the outside of your back , take out the little seams in the corners and you can see that there is my little d. -ring ready for my scissor cord, okay, now you're going to do the same thing with your inside, you're going to sew this seam and then you're going to open it like I did with the other one, like I did this one and you're going to sew along the bottom, okay.
I sewed the seam and then did the same thing I did on the first one, so I hadn't chosen it and then I did it right and then I flattened it and sewed at the bottom so that you're inside the fabric. on the inside stick this inside your bag just push the corners in like this and then the lining will go over the top of your bag like this make sure it's all even and looks nice and then just tuck in an edge underneath, tuck in the edge. underneath, like this, press, put some pins in if you want and then just sew.
I'll show you how to do it, so I took the table out of my sewing machine and this fits right here like this sleeve, like I'm sewing a sleeve, so I'm going to keep it in my straight stitch and then just take a few stitches at a time, pulling a little because it barely fits over the arm of my sewing machine, so before you sew, make sure your seams line up because if they don't they won't come out aligned. I promise. I just tried it, so let's try it again. I put this on the arm of my sewing machine and just sold seams that were only an eighth of an inch maybe. here and I did it, so I'll do this, tada, there we go too.
Nover, very simple, very easy, you can frame these corners if you want. I didn't do it because I didn't really think it would make much difference, but that's a personal preference, it's up to you, okay, now we're going to take what's left of our binding and fold the edges just like we did for the clip so that the end even if it is pressed, oops, take it, press it and then sew. along the entire length and then we will clip it to our fog scissor or keychain. I don't know what it is, but we'll figure it out anyway, wait a second, what you'll do is take funds.
This to your bag that you've made your bag of yarn and hook it through this D ring, take it out and fold it over so you can't see the raw edges that are on the inside here and then just sew it to the right. here and then when you get to the other end, you're going to do the same thing with the swivel clip here and you're going to put it through the swivel clip and then you're going to fold it over and sew it and then you can attach your scissors like this and then take it to the side of your machine. sew in a command strip and it will always be accessible if it falls, it can only go so far because of the cord so you will always have it close by so I have my mat here and then I have my little basket and I decided that the best I could to do was fasten my bag of yarn either using snaps or velcro so I decided on camp snaps because that's what I have and they are so fun and I love them.
They just snapped together and snapped together and are so easy to make. I thought it was good and I thought it could sit here next to my sewing machine, but the bag is not light, so it was very heavy and it didn't. No matter how many things I put in here, I can tell you that it flies every time you hit it, so I've decided to add a cam clip to reach the bottom of the basket and the side of the mat and I'll show you. how we do it, so I'm going to take the camera back to the new mat and show you the camps.
Now these are my camps. I bought this container from Harbor Freight because it was perfect to hold my camp photos. and I bought a lot of colors there they come in all kinds of colors when this little container worked great for me you will have lids that have the small end and then you will have a female end on a male end and come on look what colors are shown there are also tools that you're going to need and what they come with is there's kind of an ice pick that you used to make a whole there's screwdrivers there's caps that fit here these are your tools your set up the tool so I'm going to get this out of the way and I'm okay let's see.
I think we used pico before, so oh, there's yellow, we'll use yellow, okay, so I'm going to leave this out of the way. and I'm going to you can even get flowers, these are flowers, sorry, we're going to need a little bit of the top and some male ends and some female ends, two, three, one, two, anyway, you'll get the idea. I'll do one or two and then you can see what I'm talking about. Okay, here's our new basket and I'm going to want it to see if I can get it to where you can see it.
Okay, here's our basket. I'm going to want to place it right here on the edge of our mat so you can see if you can see it right here, so I'm going to mark. You can use a friction pin or any pin you want, turn it over and just make a small mark. little circle and I would do two snapshots and then you want to see how far they are there, but let's do this first, so you're going to take your little ice pick tool, you're going to make a little hole as you can see and then I'm going to put one of these little ends of flour or not you have to use flour, when you can use whatever you want, it actually goes inside.
I've done it before and then I have to get it right in that hole, okay? It comes like this, now you will use either the male end or the female end and just make sure you do the same thing every time and then the hard part is getting it inside this little tool, your cap will go inside the black part. right here and this is the lid so you know it's all squished there without letting go and then you just squeeze it really good and squish this in the center right down there and it's there it looks really good okay and we'll do that in the on the other hand check the lid now if you prefer to use velcro of course use velcro because I personally don't like it.
The thread gets tangled in the velcro and it bothers me. It doesn't always seem to work, but these camp brooches. they are super fun and not expensive ok my husband came over for a second and chat so you can see where these snaps are so just make a little mark with your friction pen it doesn't even have to be a friction pin where Now they're there, that's where we're going to put our next hole, so put your little ice pick in there, now your slot machine and it goes underneath or your cap comes out there. Now you'll want to put your feminine end in there, remember. your cap goes against the black, this one is much easier because you don't have to get the fabric dirty and then squeeze it and voila, you take it out of there, okay, we will do it one more time, so they are good for many projects, I really love them, They're very useful, they're pretty easy for kids to make, even okay, now it's in place and then all I have to do is put them in and this puppy isn't going anywhere.
Right now we just need to attach the bag to this, so using the same method, just go ahead and attach it and voila, that's what it looks like, the pegs in place, your camera naps aren't on your little scissors, they're united and everything is. I hope you enjoyed this
