Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Teardown! - Where is the Glass?!

Jun 01, 2021
so Samsung ended up responding to the edge regarding my Galaxy Z

flip

durability test video and it's interesting what they said, they said the Galaxy Z

flip

features an infinitely flexible display with ultra-thin

glass

from Samsung, this utg technology, the first in its kind, it is Unlike other Galaxy flagship devices, although the screen folds, it must be handled with care. Additionally, the Galaxy Z flip has a protective layer on top of the ultra-thin

glass

similar to the Galaxy Fold that we were last told there is protection. at the top it explains exactly what we saw during the durability test that protective layer was the layer that was getting damaged and the glass is fine, maybe underneath all that some

where

I never backed down from a good challenge, it's time to find some glass, let's start with the I realized that something must have happened between filming my last video and filming this video while the phone was on my desk.

Strange cracks have started to appear along the center line of the hinge and appear to be beneath the surface of this protective layer. Obviously my phone has been through quite a bit of stress, but this is still pretty strange now that some protections are removable, you know, like a helmet, sunglasses or a screen protector, but removing this particular protection reveals that it's not should not be removed or replaced. The Galaxy Z Flip screen protector protects your screen in exactly the same way your skin protects your internal organs. Take it away and you'll probably die, which is what we see happening here.

More Interesting Facts About,

The full mkbhd on this z flip destroys the phone. Now Samsung has offered a one-time Screen Replacement for broken screens for $119 after that it will be 499, but it's nice of them to offer that first replacement so cheap. I'm not quite sure how much we can call it a protective layer when it's actually essential to the survival of the phone it doesn't actually protect the screen, it is the screen, so if the screen ever gets scratched at level 2 with deeper grooves on level 3, the damage is still perfect, let's find that glass, although it looks like I accidentally ripped off the tape. cable that connects this screen to the internal parts.

I'll check out the innards here in a second. The body of the Z flip is still super impressive, although we'll take that hinge apart to see the bristles that Samsung announced during its launch event now, according to Samsung we should start to see the glass just below this integral epidermis and ladies and gentlemen, I think this That's all, small shards of broken glass are covering the OLED layer just below that plastic protection. Little shiny glass shards are scraping off with my tweezers almost like little pieces of fiberglass and they shine like broken glass, not to mention my fingers are now full of it.

Fair reward. I guess well played, there's glass here, but it's not the physics revolution we all thought it would be now. Samsung said the top protective layer was similar to what they had on their first Galaxy Fold, so we'll take a quick look. It appears that both screens have the same layer of hard copper glued behind the screen, probably to give rigidity to the non-screen parts. It's not supposed to flex by removing just the top clear layer from the fold it reveals that in fact both phones have a similar top plastic protection but underneath that layer the screens are built differently we can see that the fold has a clean flexible plastic, while the lid has the thin layers of cracked glass.
I imagine the glass layer helps keep the screen a little stiffer than if it didn't exist, but it's still not what your fingers touch when you use the phone and it's important to remember that the outside layer of the new lid is still as smooth as the original Galaxy Fold. Let's see if we can open this thing and find those dust-resistant bristles inside the hinge. I will remove the black tape that protects the inside side of the screen from the hinge. This reveals a ton of screws, but not much else at this point, we'll flip the phone over and enter through the other side.
The top piece of glass comes off quite easily. Getting crushed during the container test

where

the Galaxy Z flipped worked great. In fact, I'll disconnect the ribbon from the front screen like a little Lego. Remember that this is the small screen, the viewfinder that we can see when the phone is closed. It's fun. I'll get out my heat gun for the bottom section of the glass. Since it's still glued in place, the heat helps soften the adhesive and I can remove the glass from the foam body with my suction cup and pry tool, placing it to the side, we get our first look at the wireless charging pad on the bottom half . on the phone there is a screw that holds the black plastic bracket over the top of the ribbon cable, once it is unplugged I can place the wireless charger to the side and I can start with the plastics, the bottom black plastics have five screws and then that speaker can When you move away from the foam body, you can see the white water damage indicator next to the gold contact pads that allow the speaker to communicate with the motherboard.
The top plastics have their own six screws and then two additional screws on the bottom of the large rectangular plate. and I'll be honest, this actually looks amazing inside. Thumbs up because a transparent cover on this phone would look amazing. Let me know in the comments if I should bring back the clear cover marked D. I'll use my plastic. pry tool to disconnect the top battery, you know, since we'd hate to damage the phone or anything, I'll release the extension tapes like little Legos and then the side volume tape here on the left, the top motherboard has a screw that It holds the phone and interestingly there are several small magnets on the top which I assume help keep the phone closed when it is in the closed position.
I'll take out the removable SIM card tray, unplug the front camera and then the Zee flip motherboard can pull away from the frame of the phone, this looks pretty phenomenal too, it has a glow that covers the entire board like a rainbow. I love it. I will flip the dash and disconnect the two main rear cameras. We have the 12 megapixel ultra wide camera. the left without optical image stabilization and the 12 megapixel main camera on the right with optical image stabilization the front camera seems to be stuck in place or possibly I bent the phone too much during the container test and now it is not coming out easily from any way, it comes out in pieces.
We can see the colorful sensor on the back here that captures the light and transmits the image to your phone and then we have the lens part that brings the light to the sensor. have the rectangular earpiece speaker, circular vibration motor and small circular contact pads for the volume control along with another small water damage indicator next to the SIM card tray opening. Samsung has included two batteries inside the Zi Flip, the phone feels very well balanced. when everything is assembled this top battery comes out relatively easy and has a capacity of 930 milliamp hours down here at the bottom of the phone I can remove the flat extension cables along with a display strip that is attached to the port plate load.
It's the same one I broke by accident when we were looking for glass on the screen. I'll put it here. The bottom of the phone also has a series of magnets along the edge of the frame to keep things closed. The charging port. the plate can come out of the frame still attached to the extension tape, of course this little guy has the built-in bottom microphone and USBC charging port. It looks like these long black extension cables run through and are integrated into the hinge mechanism, so it should be interesting to take a look when you take all that out, but first the battery is much more securely glued to the frame and once again Samsung He went a little overboard with the glue, but it finally turns out that this one is much bigger. 2,370 milliamp hours for a total of thirty-three hundred when we add both batteries Now that everything is successfully removed from the phone, let's see what this new hinge design has to offer us.
Remember that Samsung redesigned this thing with bristles on the inside to help keep dust out. Since dust is a foldable phone's worst nightmare, I'll start with the four black screws here in the center, once they're out I can remove the top and bottom center trays. This shows four large things that look like springs, but not much else we have. To dig deeper, Samsung says this hinge is inspired by a lotus flower and the hidden hinge allows the phone to open at a tea-type angle, like a laptop. I will remove the eight screws holding the bottom half of the frame to the hinge.
I can then carefully separate the two halves by pulling the ribbon cables through the bottom and bringing in the frame. We might as well go all the way. At this point I will remove the eight remaining screws holding the hinge to the top half of the frame and after removing the rubber stopper from the hinge opening I can pull the extension straps through the top half of the frame and our Galaxy Z flip hinge is free, it looks great, in fact the amount of engineering inside this thing is crazy, it's still attached to the Samsung logo metal spine piece, but I can detach it pretty easily by releasing the center black brackets on both sides, which then releases the ribbon cable and exposes the last two screws to remove the Z flip hinge and here we are up to At this point, I have not seen a single bristle inside this hinge, which you know it would help keep the dust out and if you remember from the Samsung ad it seemed like the bristles were everywhere here, wait no this is funny.
I found them, they're Not all the way around the inside of the hinge, they're just around here wrinkled on the edge of the little end caps, which I guess is still pretty effective. They're marketing, you know, it made it seem like things would be a little different, but that seems to be the overall theme with the Z flip the actual gear mechanism is here marvel of the steampunk mobile era inside the phone the Galaxy Z flipped possibly It's the coolest phone this year and definitely the most durable foldable phone I've ever tried. All that being said, Samsung is the number one smartphone maker in the world and the hype for this phone was particularly extreme.
It's not very well written. I think Samsung needs to beef up their marketing a bit, it's pretty safe to say that. everyone thought this phone was going to have a glass screen, you know, since they literally said on their website that it would feature the first foldable glass screen on a Galaxy. Yes, we said that Samsung's foldable glass made of ultra-thin glass sets you up for an epic view with a smooth flat screen, combine that with the comment about bending physics, it's a bit much for what we really have, you know, and then the creepy thing, I feel like we got caught on Tinder, this phone is still a 10 out of 10, of course. but it claimed to be a 15 and so now I feel like it's a 6 if they had come out and said something like: we've created a revolutionary new ultra-thin glass substrate that can flex and fold in the new Galaxy.
SIII flip this optically clear glass core technology will take flexible displays to the next level. I think you know, phrasing it like that would more accurately portray what's going on and at the same time get everyone excited about something new. The

galaxy

Z flip isn't actually breaking any laws. of physics and okay, still a 10 out of 10 and I would still swipe right, let me know what you think in the comments if Samsung had been more realistic about the whole folding glass thing that pops up with me on Instagram and Twitter and Thank you very much for seeing us.
See you there.
