Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 13 Pro Max - Which is the Flagship KING?

Jun 05, 2024
- Now that Samsung's best, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, has been officially launched, how does it compare to Apple's best in the iPhone 13 Pro Max? What's up, guys? Saf here on SuperSaf TV and as we do every year, we'll be loo

king

at all the key differences side by side with SuperSaf Style. So the first thing I want to talk about is the construction and design. Now, design is subjective, but I really like the design of both devices, especially the fact that they have this nice matte finish on the back. And they are also very premium. We have an aluminum frame for the S22 Ultra.

We have a stainless steel frame for the iPhone 13 Pro Max,

which

is more durable. Both devices are IP68 water and dust resistant,

which

is fantastic. However, you can submerge the iPhone 13 Pro Max in water at greater depths compared to the S22 Ultra. Now, I'm not sure how much difference that will make to people, but if you're someone who likes to take your smartphone swimming, then you'll probably be a little better off with the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Now in terms of colors, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is available in four colors. We have gold, graphite, silver and Sierra blue.

More Interesting Facts About,

However, the S22 Ultra is available in four basic colors. We have this Phantom Black, a Phantom White, a Burgundy, and a Green, but it's also available in three additional colors exclusively on

samsung

.com. We have a graphite, a sky blue, which is quite similar to Sierra blue, as well as a red. So you get more color options on the S22 Ultra. If you're interested in purchasing one of those exclusive colors, I'll leave a link in the description below that will also give you $50 credit. Ok, now in terms of size, I must say that both of them are big devices.

The S22 Ultra is a little taller. While the iPhone 13 Pro Max is a little wider and heavier and we have some small differences. On the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the edges are curved but the sides are flat. While on the S22 Ultra, the edges are much more square but the sides are more curved. Personally, I'm used to fairly large phones, so I can get along with any of them. But if you're coming from a smaller phone, it may take you some time to get used to them. Ok, now let's talk about the screens. These two have excellent, large displays: 6.7 inches on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, 6.8 inches on the S22 Ultra.

Now both also use AMOLED technology. We have really good contrast ratios, deep blacks and vibrant colors, but there are a lot of differences. We have a ceramic shield on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. We have Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the S22 Ultra. Now, I'm not one to do drop tests, but in my experience, they are both very durable. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a flat screen, while the S22 Ultra has a curved screen on the sides. Now, in my opinion, a curved screen looks better, but in terms of practicality, I prefer a flatter screen. It's also easier to get screen protectors for a flat screen than a curved screen.
And then if we look at the bezels, we have small bezels on both devices, but we get a higher screen-to-body ratio on the S22 Ultra because we have a punch-hole for the front camera. While on the iPhone 13 Pro Max we have a notch. Now, this notch is 20% smaller compared to the one we had on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but compared to the notch, the punch-hole is much less annoying. The S22 Ultra also has many more advantages. First of all, it has a higher pixel density due to its high resolution. Then things will be a little sharper.
And while both devices have a 120 hertz refresh rate, which makes things very smooth, the S22 Ultra can go down to just one hertz. The iPhone 13 Pro Max drops to 10 hertz. This will make the S22 Ultra's display more efficient and will also allow you to have an always-on display. An always-on screen is something I find very useful. You can see your time and the notifications you have at a glance while your device is on the table. You don't even have to pick it up. This is something that is unfortunately not available on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I really expected it this time.
The S22 Ultra also has a brighter display with a maximum brightness of 1750 nits. The iPhone 13 Pro Max also has a bright display, but it maxes out at around 1,200 nits. So if you're someone like me who uses your smartphone outdoors a lot and always wears sunglasses, you'll definitely prefer the S22 Ultra. And for all these reasons, I would have to give the screen victory to the S22 Ultra, although the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a very nice screen. Now, one of the reasons we have the notch on the iPhone 13 Pro Max is because of Face ID. Face ID is a very secure method of face unloc

king

and it works very fast and very, very well.
The S22 Ultra also has facial recognition. However, this is only done using the front camera. It does not use any additional sensors like the iPhone 13 Pro Max. So it's something I don't use for security reasons on the S22 Ultra. However, the S22 Ultra has an in-display fingerprint scanner. This is Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2. It's the same one we had last year but it works very, very well. It's fast. It's very safe. Now, in recent years, my preference has been an in-screen fingerprint scanner because I have had to wear masks in many places. However, Apple has tried to find some solutions for this.
First of all, if you have an Apple Watch, you can unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch, but with an upcoming update, iPhones will still be able to use Face ID even if you have a mask on by recognizing the area on top of your face. Realistically speaking, I think this will come down to personal preference. I think they are both absolutely fine. Now let's move on to the cameras. Hey. Oh, this guy again. Look, it's not the best job but someone has to do it. Guys, look, I've been looking at the analytics and I'm going to be honest with you, it doesn't look good.
It doesn't look good. About 60% of those watching are not subscribed. So if you're enjoying this video so far, maybe consider hitting the subscribe button and the bell icon to get notified when we upload new videos. That's it, that's all I'm going to say. Okay, so you may be sick of watching Side Saf so many times, but he's very interested in getting you all to subscribe. So if you haven't already, maybe consider subscribing. Very, very soon, there will be much more Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra content on the channel. I've been working non-stop to publish as much content as possible.
So yes, please do it. So cameras. Now I have done a detailed comparison of the SuperSaf style camera between the S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. It lasts around 20 minutes and I cover pretty much all aspects of the cameras side by side. I'll link that video in the description. So you can go ahead and check it out if you really want to know what the difference is, but to give you a quick summary, we have a very similar camera set up on both devices. We have an

ultra

wide angle camera, a main camera and a 3X telephoto camera.
The S22 Ultra, however, has an advantage because it has a Periscope zoom camera that gives you 10 times optical zoom and can go up to 100 times. The iPhone 13 Pro Max maxes out at 15 times. Now, in my experience, when it comes to imaging, I leaned more towards the S22 Ultra thanks to its versatility. And Samsung also does a lot of processing on its images, which some people may not like, but I like the look of the S22 Ultra's images. However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is still the king of video. So if you're someone who shoots a lot of videos on your smartphone, the S22 Ultra is good, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max is just better.
You have excellent dynamic range and excellent autofocus even in low light situations. Once again, I'm going to link the detailed comparison of the Super SafStyle camera in the description and on the cards, so go ahead and check it out if you really want to see what the differences are between these cameras. Okay, now let's move on to performance. The iPhone 13 Pro Max is powered by the Apple A15 Bionic chip. This has been very simple. You have six gigabytes of RAM to go with that. The S22 Ultra will vary depending on your region. In certain regions, you'll get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and in others, you'll get the Exynos 2200 with eight or 12 gigabytes of RAM.
It's now gotten to a point where performance is so good on smartphones that you're literally looking at seconds of difference or sometimes milliseconds of difference. Personally speaking, I don't think you'll have any problems with any of these. Both are really good and the performance also comes down to the software. So on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, we have iOS and we have Android with One UI on the S22 Ultra. Now you know that I don't get into a debate between Android and iOS because a lot of it comes down to personal preference. I know people don't like me using the term personal preference, but that's literally the case.
And both iOS and Samsung on One UI are really good with updates. You will receive updates for longer on your iPhone compared to your Samsung device because the updates come directly from Apple. But Samsung has really kept up lately. Now, a couple of points I should mention about the software is that the S22 Ultra takes much more advantage of the larger screen compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. On the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the icons are very large and that extra space is not really used. It will look exactly the same as the iPhone 13 Mini. Now I understand that's great for consistency and Apple likes to keep it consistent, but if you have a screen that big I want to be able to take full advantage of it.
On the S22 Ultra, I can make the icons smaller, have an extra column and you also have features like multi-window which will allow you to have two apps open at the same time, side by side. I also feel that the S22 Ultra is better at multitasking. One of the examples I always give is that every time I upload a story to Instagram, on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, if I then move to a different app, the upload of that video to my stories will not complete. It will just stop there at the bottom. On the S22 Ultra, it will continue normally and I don't have to worry about it.
On the iPhone 13 Pro Max, I've had many situations where I came back a few hours later and that story hadn't uploaded. Now I feel like this is more due to software than RAM because six gigabytes of RAM is still enough, so I hope Apple can improve this in the future. Another big advantage you get with the S22 Ultra is the S Pen. This is now included within the device and has also been greatly improved with a latency of just 2.8 milliseconds. That's down from nine milliseconds that we had on previous devices and it also has lower latency compared to the Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro.
Now, I know an S Pen isn't for everyone, but for someone like me who edits images a lot on my smartphone, in addition to signing documents and so on, this is very, very useful. Unfortunately, you can't get anything equivalent to this on the iPhone. Now coming to the speakers, we have really good stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos on both devices. We have one on the earpiece and one on the bottom. And in my experience, they both sound really good. I don't think you're going to have any problems. My friend Thunder E from Booredatwork has done a detailed test of the speakers.
So if you're really interested in the differences between the speakers, I'll link the video of him in the description below. Now, one point I must mention is the connectors. So the S22 Ultra has the most universal USB Type C. The iPhone 13 Pro Max still uses a Lightning cable. This is something I personally find quite frustrating because as an Apple user and in the ecosystem with my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, those devices use USB Type C. However, if I travel, I can't just carry the charger and cable. I also have to take the Lightning cable for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which is really frustrating.
Now I understand that there are a lot of accessories that still support lightning bolts and it would be a big change, but lightning bolts were cool back in the day, but now they are definitely outdated. And I think it's time for Apple to definitely update its iPhones to have USB Type C for the iPhone 14. However, at this point, I'll have to give the edge here to the S22 Ultra. Let's talk now about batteries. So we have pretty big batteries in both. The S22 Ultra has a larger physical battery compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Size doesn't matter though, I guess it depends on the context, but when it comes to battery sizes it doesn't really matter the actual size of the battery because there are so many other factors that come into play.
And in my experience, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is still the champ when it comes to battery life. That's not to say that the S22 Ultra has bad battery life by any means. It's really good and gets me through the day absolutely fine, but I would say the battery life is about 15% longer on the iPhone13 Pro Max. However, when it comes to charging, the S22 Ultra has the advantage. First disclaimer, none of these come with a charger out of the box. You'll have to buy it separately, but the maximum charging speed the iPhone 13 Pro Max can achieve is around 20 watts.
On the S22 Ultra, you can get up to 45 watts, which will give you around 50% charge in 20 minutes, compared to a 50% charge in around 30 minutes on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Both devices also have support for Qi wireless charging. You can get up to 15 watts of Qi wireless charging on the S22 Ultra. On the iPhone 13 Pro Max, if you use a standard Qi wireless charger you can only get a maximum of 7.5 watts. The only way to get 15 watts is if you use the patented MagSafe charger. Now don't get me wrong. I like MagSafe and it's great that it just snaps on and you don't have to worry about lining it up with anything.
And there are a lot of accessories that also come with the iPhone thanks to MagSafe, but I wish the iPhone could support up to 15 watts for Qi wireless charging, as well as with MagSafe. The S22 Ultra also has reverse wireless charging. This is where you can charge other devices, such as headphones and items on the back of the S22 Ultra. I'm going to be honest with you, this is something I don't use very often but it's nice to have. Finally, let's talk about storage and pricing. So, the iPhone 13 Pro Max and S22 Ultra are available in the same storage variants: 128, 256, 512 gigabytes, or a massive one-terabyte version.
However, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is actually priced lower compared to the S22 Ultra. Now when we go for the one terabyte option, they're actually the same price in the US, but the S22 Ultra actually changes and becomes a bit cheaper here in the UK. Currently also in the US, you can get the 256 gigabyte version for the price of the 128 gigabyte version. And you can get the 512 gigabyte version for the price of the 256 gigabyte option. So, that really makes the device pretty much even in terms of price. And you can also get an extra $50 in credit if you use my link in the description below.
This is an exclusive $50 credit you won't find anywhere else. So based on all that, you'll pay about the same for both devices. That's the detailed SuperSaf style comparison of Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with iPhone 13 Pro Max. What is your choice and which one would you choose? Definitely leave me a comment below. Let me know what you think. In terms of my opinions, I use both Android and iOS and these are currently my preferred devices on both sides. I think they are absolutely great and I would have no problem recommending any of them. Of course, both have their advantages and disadvantages.
On the S22 Ultra, you get the S Pen, you get a better overall display, faster charging, and the Periscope zoom camera. However, on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, you get longer software updates, you get better battery life, and you still get the best video on any smartphone. That's what I think anyway. Definitely let me know what you think. I hope you enjoyed this video and found it useful. If you did, then smash that like button for me. And don't forget that there will be much more content here on the channel with the S22 Ultra. If you don't want to miss it, consider subscribing (by clicking the icon) and tapping (bell ringing) the all notifications button.
I'll also leave some related videos linked here so you can go ahead and watch them. Thanks for watching. I'm Saf on SuperSaf TV. See you next time.
