Roland FANTOM EX Upgrade Install Guide

Hello everyone. Ed Diaz here. In today's video, we will learn how to

install

the FANTOM EX update. So follow me and I will

guide

you through all the necessary steps. Alright, let's get started. So before doing anything, make sure your FANTOM has a good power source because we don't want to interrupt the update process. Well, first make sure it's okay. Next, let's make sure you have a USB stick previously formatted with FANTOM. I'm going to go ahead and format my USB stick in case you need to know how to do that. Check it out. Very easy.

Let's just plug it into the USB memory port. Now that it's plugged in there, we'll press Menu, go to Utilities and go ahead and press Format USB Flash Drive and OK. And yes, I'm sure. Alright. Now that it's formatted, let's take it out of the FANTOM and put it inside your computer. Now that I have my USB stick connected to the computer, let's start the process. Now, as you can see, there are a lot of files, so stay with me and we'll work on them together. The main files that we will need for the update are the following.

We will need the data file. We will need the FANTOM UPA container and we will need the actual update. I'm just showing you this. Don't do anything yet, okay? Let's work together on this. And then after updating FANTOM, we will need the different files for all the engines that we will add to FANTOM. And they will all be here except for the UPA container. So let's drag them all. Alright. So let's go ahead and do that now. I'm going to go ahead and grab from the top, and I'm going to press and hold Shift, and I'm going to grab all the way down here.

I'll wait a second so you can pause the video. So grab all of these and drag them onto the FANTOM USB stick. Grabbing all of those. Now, don't worry. There are more files I can drag. But first we will do this section. Alright. Now that we have transferred those files to our USB stick, let's go ahead and grab the update file and drag it over as well. Good, excellent. Now let's take a look at this folder that says Manual. I'm going to open it up so you can see it. And this is where all the manuals for all the new features of the FANTOM EX are located.

Make sure you grab them and put them somewhere you can refer to them. Okay, let me back up. Right here we have the Readme text for English and Japanese. So if you want, you can go ahead and look at them, and these will also tell you how to

install

them. Now, let's take a look at these right here. We have a lot of new scenes for n/zyme and also for the EX update. I highly recommend that you place these scenes on your FANTOM. They will provide you with some great inspiration with some of the new features and engines found within the FANTOM EX update.

So I'm going to unzip this one that says n/zyme. Now that's that folder, I'm going to drag it into the FANTOM folder here. Now I'm going to take the one that says FANTOM EX Scene. I'm going to double click to open that one too. Okay, now that we have this, let's go ahead and grab it and put it in the folder. And now let's open this one that says Wallpaper FANTOM EX. Now I have this folder and I'm going to drag it to the FANTOM USB stick. Well, at this point, I suggest you pause the video, look at the screen, and make sure yours looks exactly like mine.

And I'm going to check mine too. So make sure you have everything dragged here and I suggest you do the same. Just do it now. The most important thing is that we need to have the data, the FANTOM UPA container and the update. Those files will

upgrade

your FANTOM to EX. Alright, I think we're fine. Okay, so if your screen looks exactly like my screen for the USB stick, let's go ahead right now and eject the FANTOM USB stick from our computer. Alright. Now that we've done that, let's go ahead and turn off our FANTOM. Now let's take the USB stick that has all the FANTOM update information and plug it into our USB stick port on our FANTOM.

Alright, now let's start with the next important step. Let's hold down the right button and turn on our FANTOM. Continue holding the right button until FANTOM enters Update mode. Let's do this now. Press and hold Write. Turn on your FANTOM. Continue pressing the Write button. And it says Preparing for updates. Okay, now that the update has started, you can release the Write button and sit back and relax. Do not touch the FANTOM. Don't touch the power supply or anything. Just sit back, relax and let FANTOM follow the steps to update your FANTOM to the new FANTOM EX update.

Alright, we're halfway there. So, once FANTOM says "Upgrade board on one end...", now it's time to take the USB stick and put it into one of the ports on the external device, the other memory ports on the FANTOM. So let's do it now. Once you plug the USB stick into that external device port on the FANTOM, it will automatically continue updating the FANTOM to the EX. So let's be patient. You are halfway there. Alright, look at this. The FANTOM says: "Refresh board to the end." Alright, let's take our time now. I'm going to turn off the FANTOM and remove the USB stick from the external device port.

Let's do it together now. Alright. Right now, let's go ahead and power up our new FANTOM EX. Let's do it. That was great, right? You now have the operating system updated to FANTOM EX. Let's go ahead and check that out now. So I'll press Menu, System and turn the knob until I get to Information. And as you can see, it says EX 1.0. Very cool. Alright, let's go out. Go back to the top screen now. Let's begin the next part of the installation process. We are going to install all the Expansions. Remember our USB stick that had all those expansions?

We'll plug it in in just a second. Let's start by first turning off our FANTOM once again. Okay, now that our FANTOM is off, let's plug the USB drive back into the USB drive port. The original one, not the external device port, the original USB memory port. So now let's hold down the Tempo button and hold it until we get the message to install the Expansions. So hold down the Tempo button and turn on your FANTOM. Continue holding. You will see the message. Okay, now release the Tempo button. So, here we go. We are in the FANTOM Expansions section where we can install and uninstall Expansions.

So I'm going to turn the dial wheel and we can see what we currently have installed inside our FANTOMs. I'm going to press the Install knob. Press that. And it reads from a USB stick, and I can select JD-800, n/zyme, and SuperNATURAL Acoustic Piano 3. I could do all of this individually, or I could press and hold shift and up arrow to select all three. Once all three are selected, I can press Install. On your FANTOM, it will tell you approximately how long it will take to install these three Expansions. On mine it says 6 minutes and 5 seconds.

Alright. I'm sure. Well. Alright. We already have those three Expansions installed, let's take a look. So if we go down, we see that there is the JD-800, a little more, there is n/zyme. And if we look, there is one more, the SuperNATURAL Acoustic Piano 3. Alright, let's move on. So now I'm going to press the Piano Expansion tab. It is currently empty, but not for long. Let's press Install. And you see, there is the brand new German concert. Let's go ahead and install that one now. So I went ahead and used my dial wheel or my cursor, I have it selected and let's press the knob down to Install.

Excellent. This one says: "Are you sure? It will take about 7 minutes." I am absolutely sure. Alright. So let's install it. Let's press this knob or the screen to OK. Alright. There is. The German grand piano is now installed inside your FANTOM. Now, let's select the next tab and that will give us ACB. There is currently nothing there. Let's press the Install knob and see what we get. Here we go. Let's get the ACB JUPITER-8. So I'm going to use my dial wheel, or I can use my arrows to go down and select. And now, let's press the Install knob.

Press it down. Excellent. This one will take us about 51 seconds. Press OK. And let's install it. Alright. How cool is that? We have the ACB JUPITER-8. We have the German V-Piano grand piano and we have the JD-800, n/zyme and the SuperNATURAL Acoustic Piano 3. Alright, at this point you can turn off your FANTOM, but go ahead and leave that alone. USB memory into the USB port. Let's do this now. Let the FANTOM turn off completely. And now, let's start again. Now let's go ahead and install some of the scenes created for n/zyme and also the FANTOM update.

So I'm going to go ahead and press Menu, go to Utilities, and now we'll select Import. And now, let's select Import Scene. As you can see here, I'm now inside the root directory of my USB stick and I can choose if I want to put the n/zyme scenes in, and there are 20 of those. Or the FANTOM EX scenes, and there seem to be 16 of them. So I'll try to install the FANTOM scenes. There are 16 of them. So I'm going to Select and there we go. There are 16 there. I'm going to go to Next. And he wants to start on B-128.

But I want to clarify that and I want to put it in C-51. I know I have a bunch of scenes initialized there, so that's where I want to put them, and I'll keep increasing and moving the cursor down until I have 16 places saved. Excellent. And now let's execute. And import. Excellent. So I just imported those scenes. So if we were to go to C-51, there it is. C-51. You can see there are some new scenes using the new FANTOM EX update. So try it. And if you want to install the n/zyme scenes, just follow the same procedure as I did with the FANTOM EX update scenes.

Now let's move on to review that wallpaper and install a new wallpaper inside our FANTOM. So once again, I'm going to go to Menu, I'm going to go to Utilities, and I'm going to go to Wallpaper right there. And I'm going to select User File. Excellent. As you can see, once again, we're in the root directory of our USB stick right here. And I'm going to go down to where it says Wallpaper. Remember, it's at the bottom. So I'm going to go ahead and enter. I'm going to move the cursor to the right. Here we go.

And if we lower the cursor we can install these wallpapers. This is another cool feature of the FANTOM EX update, the ability to set your own wallpaper. Let's go ahead and try to put one in now. So I'm going to select that one and I'm going to Select. And there it is. Little kanji for you. Let's try some others. Once again, let's do it again. I'm going to use the knob to turn it all the way down. Let's go to the right and try this one. This wave PNG. Let's select. And here it comes. That's great.

I think I'm going to leave it there. Another very interesting feature that is available within its FANTOM EX update. There you go. We just installed the FANTOM EX update.
