Richard Hammond Tries A New Mechanic In His Workshop!

Mar 08, 2024
I've driven the TRX, yes, I've become a good rally driver, I am and I've shown Martin who's boss. This car was built for Speed. Now it's time to get my hands dirty. Mike is ready for a day with the tools. in the smallest gear, probably to work on something really cool, an old Porsche, maybe a Jaguar that knows the R 620 TI. The first thing I think is it's beautiful, fantastic, fantastic. I love it. It comes in blue, one of the prettiest colors, anyway, you told me at the beginning of the year. one of the things you wanted to do was get more stuck in the cars, get a little more stoned, there's nothing better than using the tool, so give it to Isaac, there are so many jobs to do on this car, good luck, thank you very much .

The list Mike left me was a hose kit, service threaded shocks, and modified fog lights. The first thing is to change the hose in the engine compartment. What is a hose? So it's all the pipes that run all the cooling and everything. the turbo lines because he's a turbo and Michael says how fast he goes, but we're going to put some shiny purple ones in there that obviously had horsepower, and also because of the age of the car, they're going to be all cracked and old, so a little bit of improvement, okay, we can do it, yes, easy, okay, let's do it.

Where is? Look at me being a

mechanic

. Well, when he started with the 620, he had some important Rover-related errands to run. My first errand is the interior. It will be a big change for this Rover's Insight. By the way, have you seen this car? We've started a new channel called More Drivet Tripe and this is a site project we have in the A600 barn we bought from Auto Alex. want to see these videos Link in the description to our second channel more drivet Tripes to polish well it's just impossible if you were working on your car this would all work out great because they've been here since because this is a bucket of rust yeah.

That's exactly what I told Mike. It is also very important that with an older car you check the hoses and change them. Check the hoses. I even noticed that the mighty Rover was in dire need of some new hoses, apparently it can't. Actually, I already buy them, but luckily Mike said the guys at Samco had hooked us up with a new custom kit designed specifically for this car and they're purple. I guess that's cool, now it was time to service the Rover and the Drivet tribe. MD Dave had a special delivery just for us with today's Liquid Moolly video sponsors supplying all of these fluids, so now that's done, we'll get started on the service and get started on some engine.

Clean the engine, rinse well, what the hell okay? So we put this in the engine, let it run for 10 minutes and this helps clean out all the carbon deposits so the engine is much cleaner for the new oil. Well, we can do it with this it is recommended to do it in every service, it is normal, but this just helps to clean everything okay, so now we are going to start it and let it run for 10 minutes, okay, let's do it and the idea is that this will come. off yeah so it will unscrew so if you leave pressure on it it will come off and you just put it in there.
It'll all come pouring out, possibly, yeah, great, there you go, that's the whole filter, so we'll do it. Wait for it to drain, I did that and then I rebuilt it all again and put some new oil in a nice oil which was like diffusing a bomb and I'm not a bomb expert so it was a little scary but I made it easy . professional, so we're ready to put fluids back in and we're going to start with serch right, which is a ceramic anti-wear and friction additive that helps keep your engine nice and healthy and running smoothly, and this is a really good thing.
Turns out you can help an engine even more by adding a little oil additive. Isn't that lucky for Mike's Rover? So now on to the oil that the Rover repaired. Thanks again to Liqu Moolly for sponsoring today's video. That's it, look at that nice turbo noise. the power, yes, that's it, you normally put the date on them, okay, I don't need it, move on to the next job, let's do it next. They were what I call spring things or Isaac calls coil springs, things were starting to get a little complicated. It's a little more complicated than I thought it would be.
I think those who responded just take it to a

workshop

and let them do it. I don't know why people bother doing it on their own, so these screws that they took out here hold the top of the shock on this is the suspension turret, the turret, yeah, so it stops moving, okay, that's just it. it keeps it in place, so when you jump, say the front AR lifted but the car stops moving, okay, cool. See, I did it, that's the first one, nice, this looks really old and gross, let's put some shiny new ones in, yeah, let's do it, let's get rid of this, that's it, we're perfect, you've done it before, very clever, Aren't they few? more, that's perfect right, I'd say it's tight now, yeah, okay, okay, one done, it wasn't that bad, I can actually do it again, now you're an expert, though yeah, I'm going to do the next so fast.
It's only 10 minutes, start to finish, okay, let's do it. I'm ready. We installed the other three BC racing shocks which apparently allow Mike to lower his car. I have no idea why you would want to do that, but there you go. A little side job we have to do is Mike wants his fog lights because they are all rusty before he can find some new ones. He wants them painted yellow. Why does he want them yellow? He wants to make it more Japanese. so he wants to do it, yes, but he wants to do a French JDM modification, right, that's very microphone, isn't it?
Yeah, no, I don't know what he's doing, but no, I didn't ask any questions, okay? I'll do it for him, can we? um this is like nail polish, nail varnish, I can work with that, so you have a small brush, but that's all I could find, okay, I'm going to take that small brush, good luck, that big. one does the same, can you put some in mine? Yes it is safe. Don't know. Okay, we'll see. Don't put it on your new overalls. Yes, true, true, true, true. What happens if I mess up the settings? apparently Mike said they're very rare and expensive and apparently the Rover community is like that, it's bad that we're doing this, it feels really bad, it felt bad, I felt bad for about 3 seconds and then I moved on, um.
I know you're meant to be the professional, but I'm going to say mine is better. I mean, you know, from 20 feet, mine looks good, yes, but up close yours is covered in brush strokes, but mine is perfect. I used a TR, no. Basically you used a TR and I used it as a nail polish, yours looks better but we won't tell Mike, I think it'll be fine, it'll just be fine, we'll let them dry and he'll never know. no, that's it, yeah, perfect, okay, you might remember in the last video with the Rover I said I wanted to re-trim the interior and we're here in the middle of England, here's the interior of the 620 Thompson blue Tartan.
I go into the Scotland store, which is based in the borders and they have pretty much any tartan you want and we went through this amazing process where they sent me samples of different colors, different designs of tartan and I decided on this Thompson blue. I think it's the closest to the Rover's body color, but here's Adrian. Mid England Retrims have said that they don't want a full color scheme because then the interior could blend in with the rest of the car, so this isn't quite there, but it should really stand out and make this car super unique.
Favorite part of this whole interior, I mean the seats are amazing and most of the work has been done on them, look at my gear shift knob, how cool is that I can't wait to have this installed in the car and change gears with it, there is one more seat. to trim, so we'll hand it over to Adrien and he'll show us how it's done. I am very excited to see this interior installed on my 620. If you would like to get a custom tartan interior for your car, we will put a link in the description so you can visit the Scotland store and all the designs they have to offer.
This is a process I had never seen before and with this tartan we were fusing old school material with old school technology, the old Rover. The seat was carefully unstitched preserving the leather from the side bolster which was then bonded to the new seat material. My interior is now refreshed like the Cog. Look, what a transformation, yes, it's a completely new car. Izy, you look like a

mechanic

. You are standing. As a mechanic, yes, you had a good time, I, yes, I have enjoyed it, I have learned things, yes, I know more about how a car works.
Do you think if we left you here with another car, we'd be okay? a set of coilovers do this do a full service i think you could try it not at all. I would try but I understand. I think I would do it wrong. I think I need a little more practice. The thing is, I've totally been in your position like me. I need all the help I can get with all the mechanics, but at the end of the day you realize that it's just not that way, and a little trust, really exactly, isn't that hard.
I can do this well, so someday you can get stuck in again, put your overalls back on, and yes, work on some cars. I can see myself doing well, I guess you're somewhere prying, yeah, you're bailing out, right? Now I have to go, so I'll leave you with this. Do you want to tell the audience where you are going? Yes, I could do it. I'm going to Red Bull headquarters, yes. alone, yes, I just show up there just to have an exciting time at the Formula 1 headquarters with Max, yes, a CH, yes, okay, very exciting, but I'll give you this, thank you very much because this is your problem now , yeah, I have a few more jobs to do and then this project will be done, but really thanks, comments, the car looks much better, those pipes are sick, you're welcome, these are the cars that I think are really nice.
Izzy was off to rub shoulders with F1 stars and curate his seat for the 2025 season while Isaac and I continued installing the new interior, so why did I choose this specific tartan for the seats? Well there's the blue to match the paint on the car, the yellow to match my new fogs and the white for the last mod of the day, if you want to see Reggie in real life I'll be taking him to a lot of events this year like the pride of Longbridge, but most importantly Drive Tribe will live on June 23rd. Get your tickets through the link in the description, the interior is there and looks epic.
I'm very happy with it and these are the finishing touch on my Rover thanks to our good mates at Torque GT, they sourced these wheels from Japan, they are Advan racing wheels. and I wanted to go for that btcc style. I love white wheels and these will look amazing with those coilovers. This car will sit very well and are Shaw on the new bridge area tanza tires, six that were installed at the local quick fit. I'm going to love this car once it's finished. I can't wait to take it for a spin. I can take it home today with my fingers crossed, let's put them together.
I intended this to be a little Japanese because of its Honda Accord relationship, but I also know a little about myself with the Scottish interior. I love how unique this 620 TI looks inside. Now all this car needs to be completely finished are some center caps for the Advan wheels and some painted calipers to match the new ones. tires my goal with this car was to make Rover great again and my goal in this video was to get Izzy using the tools that I would like to think she would achieve if you want to see other videos of this project from Reggie click here and if you like this video give it a like.
I've been Mike and don't forget to subscribe to Driv Tribe. I love this car.
