Pro Shooter Breaks Down Sniper Scenes From Movies

May 08, 2020
I love how Mark knows it's loaded, he's taken barometric pressure into account, little dreams, welcome to the video. In today's video we will discuss some of the most iconic

sniper

scenes

that you voted for on my Patreon page. I've been very fortunate to be able to do it. I've been making a living as a long-range

shooter

for the past few years, so I thought I'd break down some of your favorite sniping

scenes

, list some of the things they had to set up, and, unfortunately, go over some of the things they had to put together. They were terribly wrong. our first movie, we're going to jump into it, you guessed it, American

sniper

, we're going to shoot, so we start at the training grounds.

Chris is currently training with his teammates. One of the things I noticed early on is how these rifles recoil. I wish they would jump like that, the recoil is not exactly how a rifle recoils. You'll notice that these rifles are recording, it's almost as if the actors were told, "Okay, cool, they're shooting now, like they're pretending their rifles are kicking." If you zoom in a little bit and it looks like they have a more upward movement where they show you some footage of an actual rifle recording, you'll notice that the record is in the back and that they may have overemphasized this on this. specific scene since at least that's what I was thinking to show, geez, these guys are really bad

shooter

s, but it's a theme throughout the movie that you'll see and yeah, it was, it was pretty funny now, usually when I watch

movies

like this I have I force myself not to look for these little things, but that is not the goal of today's video.

More Interesting Facts About,

In today's video, we're going to get the shit out of this. Now this guy gives his little speech here, that's a little nauseating. In fact, you're the one putting the Ankle flat, making sure you're extended as you shoot just to give yourself a stable platform again, like the guys are jumping with the whole shoulder up, okay, so the guys are hitting some steel here, you will now notice that there is a distinctive bullet mark. now steel targets don't really do that, if you're shooting a 500 or hardened steel it just makes a little splash and also the target shakes pretty violently.

I'm guessing the guys are shooting 308 Winchester here and that's going to take down the steel. The steel is pretty tough even at the distances they're shooting at. I'm guessing this will be about two 300 meters and the plate doesn't shake at all and you'll see that continually as we go through this, the plates don't really shake. It doesn't move much, whereas if in real life you were shooting at a steel plate, it has a significant amount of motion because a ton of energy is being transferred. Look, this is not my watch. There was a lot of energy that was transferred when you're shooting steel was that the bullet suddenly stopped, so here we have Chris with a semi-automatic rifle firing suppressed this time, this is something you guys have probably seen in any hero shooter, you know this.

Suppressors in the

movies

don't sound like real suppressors, a real suppressor is super loud, although also the way Chris gets in here, the bullet hits the ground, what we call splashing, okay, that's how you get up dust and not really dust. Based on how a real bullet would kick up dust, you can see that these are small charges they have said to make it miss. Here his instructor asks him if he has his eye closed, which basically means: do you have? your other eye closed as in the traditional sense. How we would shoot now for me as a competitive rifle shooter.
I should have both eyes open at all times simply because it allows me to find my target faster and attack it faster and that's exactly what Chris is. here he says that if I close mine when shooting, I won't be able to see what's out there because this peripheral vision would be limited to only seeing what's inside his subject. Now here he continues to attack the rattlesnake, so in this case they got the scale. of the rattlesnake a little bad, but for the most part in this movie the aim and scope when they show you the footage of what Chris is actually seeing through his scope and reticle looks pretty good, but in this case specific. the rattlesnake unless it was right in front of him it wouldn't be that close and also the way the bullet hits this rattlesnake it jumps straight into the air it's not realistic at all the snake would just explode horizontally into a window pop-up and comes back down like a full snake, that was terrible and then he says I'm better when he breathes ultra embarrassing, so the next scene is pretty powerful but pretty accurate, except for the underlying theme of super poor or equal or how the rifle actually shoots recoils in prayer sees a woman come out with what appears to be a Russian grenade and hands it to a young man he runs Chris surrounded him immediately reads the chambers his rifle destroys the cool Terrain there, that's very well done, it's very realistic how we would do it if we were target shooting or hunting, and as she runs, she is about to throw the grenade towards the troops he put surrounding her and his rifle recoils.
In a ridiculous way other than that pretty accurate scene, I would say I haven't had combat experience, but at least from a shooting perspective, which I can comment on, it seems pretty accurate, so Chris is set up on a rooftop, here's his rifle . backpack, maybe there's some kind of lower obstruction where the barrel of his rifle doesn't have a clear line of sight and could shoot at something, so they're both happy to be situated early, but he sees a guy running with the harpy G and he decides to put a bullet in it which is obviously the right decision, but you will notice where he points and where the bullets hit not accurately, so when we shot groups at a hundred yards, this was either 75 yards or neither, which whatever called replaced these. type of rifles is a chip shot, it's nothing, it's obvious.
I mean, you should be able to stack these bullets in a little hole like that now, when they show us the reticle and then show us where the bullet actually is. accurate, so in fact, if you had 100 yards zero, you would actually be hitting a little high because your target was a little closer at this distance. I'm not sure if it's army protocol or whatever. I don't know why I would do it. I haven't gone for the headshot, very close, incredibly easy shot, most of us who watch this channel could probably do that shot 10 out of 10 times and that would leave your target 100 percent off the count, e You could even cause more damage by potentially lying on the ground. ground and still unloading that rocket propelled grenade so yeah the headshot was just two things right there so the famous scene of the American sniper killing the long shot let's see how this plays out Chris is getting removing the glove so you can feel.
In that trigger, we noticed that there was a little movement as the bad guy pushes his snout between some sort of black plastic bags. This is an easy card to use. We buy a lot of things if we see what you see through a scope increase. It's a very close shot. seems to be marking some innovation, probably taking off a little bit because that's, I mean, pretty close judging by the scale of the reticle and what Chrissy had seen, wow, this guy shoots from back here and circles around his position and builds a new position and somehow manages to see where this guy is positioned now another thing we have to look at here this bad guy is supposedly an Olympic level shooter okay so if we look at how he pushes these little booger hooks completely through his trigger guard and basically crashes into his finger, an Olympic level shooter wouldn't do that at all.
We try to split the trigger with the middle of our pinky index finger from this last finger and it's a very methodical 90 degree trigger squeeze to land. those long range precision shots now, given the magnification and how they got the scale wrong, you probably could have pulled the trigger with these pinkies and still and that triggered those little details like this that break the immersion for us in movies and it's difficult for them to resolve everything overall, I think they did a good job anyway, let's see how Chris handles this thread. Chris's range means target here, two thousand one hundred yards, that's nineteen hundred and twenty meters, he's incredibly far away.
He's fine, he's shooting a rifle now. very capable of shooting that far, however, this is where the problem comes and it is very important to distinguish any rifle no matter how accurate the shot is in a cone of fire, so let me explain this to you who don't know much about it. I have an example of a group that I shot at one hundred meters. This group measures 11 millimeters. Three shots through the same hole. Basically, now to explain the type of fire at 200 meters, that group will double at 300 meters. It will be three times decisive at 300 meters.
It will be 33 millimeters. , so three meters standing now at 1900 meters, not 1920 meters, more specifically, that group will be over 21 centimeters, so Chris shoots this guy in the head now to give you the scale that I have measured and recorded. than 21 when three centimeters looks good, that's significantly bigger than my head, so basically what this means is that this shot is a 100% luck shot, okay, and I think Chris even says. I've seen his book, he shoots 100% black, I don't really know how. He saw it, maybe he saw some scope clip or something because at 1,900 meters, it doesn't matter what optics you have, it's very difficult to see a human being let alone someone who is hidden, so he was very lucky and obviously two things happened stories, but yes, incredible.
Since then, a sniper has been confirmed dead at three point five kilometers, which blows my mind and yes, as a long range shooter, I know there is a ton of luck involved in making a shot like that, but it is possible and It happens well, so the next movie we get to is a movie called Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg, who is apparently super anti-gun, but makes a living primarily making gun movies, which is ironic anyway, so the film opens like a sniper, any observer is a little interested. hillside provides surveillance, they see a target rolling at the spotter, someone calls him, etc., but at no point in the first clip does he give our sniper a clue as to what to leave the target, so keep in mind if I'm shooting at long distance to a moving target above and above the wound.
I have to wait, so if this is my goal and there is a bit of one, I won't go into details. I have to aim slightly off the target if there was no one, I'm dead on the target now, if there is one and the target is moving you have to add an extra stop now the Sparra doesn't give this but Marky-Mark still manages a perfect headshot into the back of the guy's head and he immediately smashes another one into the driver which causes the car to go off the road and crashes and it looks super cool but it's completely unrealistic to do two shots in the head on a highway three thousand feet above a moving target is crazy, it's not happening now, throw it at the shooter.
One kind of underlying issue, since we had an American sniper with ridiculous recoil, is, first of all, the rifles barely reported that the shooter was okay and the other thing that they completely did is that the scale of how things look in the crossovers with Mark Wahlberg's character he is completely out of place. everything looks really close if you're shooting something at 900 yards, it's going to be pretty small in your reticle no matter what optics you have, so yeah, just little details like that break the immersion, obviously for the viewers' pleasure, it's going to look super bad if the image is too far away as it would be realistic for the crosshair to not be able to see what's going on, so I understand why they do that, but it still just zooms in on the distances and makes the shots realistic I guess. after the good guys made it clear that more enemy forces are approaching this time, which is pretty funny, his spotter actually gives him an advantage on this target, but if you look at the angles at which the truck is heading straight for him, You wouldn't necessarily do it.
You've got to have some clue that you might have to stay a little bit under because the guy that's going to hit your bullets at the range is actually going to be a little bit shorter than the last time he gave you a range estimate, but you wouldn't. It is not necessary to guide a target that is heading directly towards you. Has no sense? Shoot the bubbly center of mass, which is what you should do in a situation like this. Shoot the biggest target you can. Well, he takes the guy in the back. and then he appears to shoot the driver but if you look closely they made a big mistake here and the window of the truck doesn't actually break even though he shoots it through the front window, also this guy in the back of the truck , the technician. withered machine gun in the partlater the flash of the witch's snout looks ridiculous the way he shoots it he doesn't know there's a sniper there what he's doing it's like shooting rounds at a painting here a little strange another thing you'll notice here is Mr.
Swagger's rifle is pretty candid, which basically means that if he's Darley and needs elevation on his shot, he's actually marking himself out of range by dialing elevation, which is clearly what he's doing in the scene, his rifle shouldn't be 100% zero. but as level as possible, otherwise you'll miss your shots because you've actually died on the side of the shot and you'll always love the screech of tires on gravel roads, that's serious.Well, again, it gives a main call for something you don't need a main call for and now everyone is leaving and taking off towards this mountain where they think the sniper and his spotter are right, so from this point on mr swagger just take a headshot, Donny is giving Greg some colds and then pretending to work with these guys.
One thing to keep in mind is that the time of flight of bullets is also generally very wrong at these types of distances, modern calibers will take about a second to reach your target is fine, so after clicking, they need many seconds to get there and then the guys down range will hear the sound of the actual gunshot a little later but it's not instantaneous as the bullet doesn't get there instantly. so you have to keep in mind and that's why right now, when we were talking about lead, adding additional lead because the bullet actually takes a while to travel down, I mean, those type of modern bullets that were fired, would shoot something at about 2,900 feet per second.
Okay, it's very fast, but it takes a while to cover that distance. It's a little later in the scene. Marcus, I'll print it by helicopter. He's making his last run towards it to take them out and then actually takes a Shot on the top of the rotor now, I don't know if the helicopters are flying directly at you, why wouldn't you shoot the pilot? Because this section of the pilot's torso is quite large and you definitely put the helicopter down and shoot the rotor. He might be unlucky and not do enough damage to shoot down the helicopter, in this case he obviously does because it's a movie, but he definitely probably would have shot the pilot because then you know the helicopter is going to go down and he can't. make an emergency landing and repair and do more damage later, so put one between the pilots in wounded hold, put that thing in a bunch of smoke, that's what I did, but overall it's a very doable shot I'd say which in this scenario is prone, is very stable. competent shooter helicopters that fly directly at you, yes you can do that joke right, so in the famous murder scene they have a rifle that appears to be some kind of robotic system that can apparently mark innovation, although you don't actually see a mechanism .
Howard, they're doing that, whatever a movie is, but if you look at how the rifle moves, there's a little wobble of the reticle that shouldn't be in a mechanical device. Well, again, we also talked about how fast the bullet comes. reduced range and effectively no recoil, but this appears to be a 50 caliber rifle, no matter what advice you have, especially if it can operate that way remotely, there will be quite a bit of recoil when you fire that rifle, even if you are dead doing this now It is a terrible mistake with the little HUD graphic they have made for us they say the rifles are chambered in 60 BMG there is no caliber like 60 BMG it should be 50 BMG.
I love how Mark knows he's loaded. took into account barometric pressure, but it was accurate how semi-the guys used this presidential flags thing as a window estimate and that's very realistic, so it seems pretty good when you look at it at face value, but when you start to dissect it It's a little crazy, okay? so dial, seeing if the shot is possible at a mile, could someone assassinate the president of the United States? Okay, spoiler alert, it's possible, though, he's shooting some canned food in a while, now he's calibrating it again with his rangefinder, a little dialogue from his dog, which I love . and but when we see the footage of what he's actually seeing, it looks like he's firing a cannon out to a maximum of 200 meters, but probably closer if you look at what it looks like, three is really cool.
I like how they show he has his little data book in there with his daughter about a previous engagement, he's dialing a bit at East Hertz, they actually show him lowering his reticle as he dials his drift turn, which is funny, it's the other way around. and has a little chat with his dog so Bob he really is an animal lover there is absolutely no way he would shoot a 408 cheytac if the muzzle broke a couple feet away from his rifle it would destroy for complete the dog's ear and we're going to attack this can of whatever it is individual charges. even though it has a fed magazine, which is realistic, a lot of people would do that with training now, if you look closely here you'll notice this bullet vapor trail coming in and hitting this target, that's completely wrong in terms of physics, It physically includes the vapor trail that we will see in very distant shots, depending on the conditions.
Well, it actually comes from above. It was the bullets. By the way, how cool does this look? The slow motion made everything super cool, but then if we rewind this little section, you'll see. You see the bullet actually run from the bottom of the screen towards the can of whatever it is, but in real life the bullet would actually arc like this and fall into the can to shoot again like we just said , even if you have a rifle that can shoot small small groups, there is a lot of luck involved in making a shot like that just for the stats at a mile again, an easier mile than 1.9 kilometers like in American sniper, but again , there is a lot of luck involved in getting this right.
However, an oversized target in a muzzle can certainly be done, so in this little clip here, which actually plays a vital role in the film, Bobby is later seen fiddling with the firing mechanism of his rifle , now it seems to take the firing pin out of the toolbox. he tries to insert it back into the bolt and then puts it back in the toolbox. I think the editor just didn't cut it in the right place. The final scene of the shooter. The bad guys got a sawed-off shotgun to carry in each hand. he claims that he will probably shoot him in the face, that his spasm will fire the shotgun and kill his hostage, who is probably his little love, so what he does is shoot the guy in the head, why wouldn't you be fine again if we look? the type of scope when he gets up and from the shot behind him it looks like this shot can be made for a competent shot again the magnification what they show him seeing through the reticle when he aims a little bit towards the guy's arm A little more close, well not a little closer, this guy was completely wrong, but again, as we said before, they want to ask the viewer who doesn't necessarily know much about filming, therefore they step away from all this garbage to see what kind of Bob.
Lee is seeing without it being super far away, but from everything I can see, it's a doable shot, I would put it at about four or five hundred yards, I could make that shot and even though I know a lot of people who can make that super shot. cool scene and overall fun movies guys that's it for my breakdown of these two movies.
