Porsche Cayman Myths Debunked

May 31, 2021
So today I'm just going to watch a quick video where I'm going to debunk a lot of

myths

that are out there about the Porsche Cayman. The first myth is that the Cayman is just a hardtop Boxster. The Cayman is unique because it is one of the There are few hardtop versions of a platform that is more expensive than the convertible until the most recent version, of course, and the reason the Cayman is more expensive than the Boxster is because The Boxster came out long before they appeared in the 90s, along with the 996 Carrera or 996 9/11 generation at that time, the Boxer was basically a cheap option for people who wanted to enter the Porsche market but couldn't afford a 911, which meant that from the beginning the Porsche Boxter had a stigma. of being the cheap Porsche or the baby Porsche because it was far inferior to the 911 in both price and, frankly, performance.

Porsche saw that there was an opportunity for a sort of mid-level sports car that could slot in between the Boxster. and the 911, that's where the Cayman came in, so from the start the Cayman had to be a slight step above the Boxster in terms of price and performance. Chris Harris even proclaimed that the base Cayman has better steering than any 997, a more attractive cabin, and still retains the same generic feel of the controls. I have some pretty specific problems, but none of them are concerned with the way it's handled. These types of comparisons were never made with the Boxster, no one really talked about the Boxster in the same sentence. since they are talking about a 997, although the box deserved that the Cayman was mechanically very very similar, of course that may be different now in the seven and eight since they have made them much more similar in terms of performance and the convertible. is more expensive than the hardtop unlike all previous generations of the Cayman and that brings me to the next myth: the Porsche Cayman was actually about to be faster than the 911 when it was in development and Porsche engineers had to struggle. to slow it down and somehow weaken its power and performance so that it doesn't outperform the 911 now, as much as I love the intrigue of this myth, it's simply not true from the beginning, the Cayman was always supposed to be simply a fun sports car in a segment well below the 911 for people looking for something that's a little more performance and driver oriented than a Boxster, but nowhere near the price and speed of a 911.

More Interesting Facts About,

porsche cayman myths debunked...

Porsche engineers were concerned that the Cayman would be somehow faster or more performant than the 911 and they definitely didn't have to reverse course and take steps to decrease the engine's displacement and slow it down so that it wouldn't outperform the 911 in terms of performance, you can see the evidence of this if you simply look at the engine options and engine capacity on all Caymans. From the beginning, the engine bays and entire powertrain were designed around engines smaller than those in a 911 and were never underpowered. They anticipated building a four-wheel drive version, they never anticipated building a turbo version, it was always designed to be a smaller capacity two-seater sports car for an enthusiast who wants to have a car that's a little more driver-oriented and maybe even geared toward track. than the Boxster, so before you start writing you're mad and it's true that high-end Porsche Caymans like the GT 4 can go faster than many 911s, ironically the reason the GT 4 can beat so many 911s is that many of the Cayman GT4's chassis parts were simply taken from other GT cars in the 911 line, so the next myth I'm going to debunk is that the Porsche Cayman is an expensive car, the most common reaction I have to the People when they hear I have a Porsche Cayman it's a Porsche, okay, most people who see you driving a Porsche Cayman will think you spent a lot of money on it.

I mean, I'm sure a new Cayman is very expensive by any standard, you can get a Cayman easily. The GTS costs over $125,000 straight from the factory, but mine is $21,000, which is less than the MSRP of a base model Ford Fusion, so the perception of older Caymans in terms of price is well above what they really cost; It's not as expensive as people think. It is, but you have to have a little more disposable income than average to be able to afford it, which brings me to the next myth: I'm going to make a fool of myself: that the Porsche Cayman is a cheap car and the sticker price can be more low. than a merger, but maintenance and insurance are much higher on average.
porsche cayman myths debunked
I've probably spent about five thousand dollars a year on maintenance and insurance on this car alone, basically you just have to assume that everything you do with it will cost you three hundred or a thousand dollars to replace the tires. It's a thousand dollars. I need to do an oil change and get some brake pads. That will cost $300. I need to get insurance for six months. $1000 and I'm even on the cheap end in terms of spending. a lot of money on maintenance and stuff like that because I'm just making sure it works properly and doesn't fall apart.
I don't make any modifications to the transmission. I don't make any modifications to the bodywork. Just I like it. make it drive well and not break down, so while the Cayman may be relatively cheap in terms of starting price, it is definitely not a cheap car to own the next myth is that the Porsche Cayman is slow, this is one aspect common misperception generally when it comes to the base 2.7 liter model versus the S or GTS or higher trim versions, I think the people who believe this myth haven't driven a Caiman themselves or don't. have driven it correctly because all the power, especially in this 2.7-liter engine, is above 5,000 rpm, so if you try to drive it like a Mustang or a turbocharged sports car by keeping the revs slightly lower, you will never get into the high power band and yes, it will feel a little slow in comparison. to other sports cars at this level, but if you get used to driving above 4000 rpm, my goodness, there's no way you'd think this car feels slow.
The next myth is that you can't drive a Porsche Cayman in the snow. He is just a Mr. Dumb and would rather leave his car in the garage as much as possible and never take it out anywhere. The fact is, it's perfectly fine to drive your Cayman in the snow; in fact, it will handle it quite well. I recommend you buy some snow tires and take them out in the snow as much as you can because it's actually pretty fun. The key is to be smart, don't do anything stupid, make sure you have the right tires, don't try to get out.
There are all seasons and especially not summer tires, but if you have the right tires, know what you are doing and are safe, it is perfectly fine to drive in the snow, so the next myth is that the Porsche Cayman consumes a lot of energy. gasoline. It's obviously not the most efficient car in the world, but in terms of all the cars I've ever owned, it's actually the second most efficient overall. It gets better gas mileage than my Chevy Malibu, which was my first car. It gets better highway mileage than my Miata and gets about the same mileage in the city, in fact the only car I've ever owned that's more efficient than this is a Fusion Hybrid.
I'm currently averaging 21.4 miles per gallon combined, which is both highway and city driving, but a little more in the city. miles these days than highway driving, if I did a lot more highway driving for a couple of weeks I'd probably get back to about 24 miles per gallon average overall and I'd say even by modern standards that's pretty good. The next myth is a bit controversial, so keep in mind that in the comments section there will be a bit of discussion about this, I'm sure, and that myth is that the reveal of the Porsche Cayman IMS is going to blow up your engine. 2009, the engine design no longer used the intermediate shaft which had previously proven to be problematic, so on post 2009 models this is not even an issue, you don't even have to worry about it.
Three 2009 models are known to be cited. quote, problematic, what I haven't seen are many examples of people having a catastrophic failure that blows a hole in the side of their engine in the same way that some nine nine six 911s and even some boxers are known to do, so it's helpful I know pre-2009 models have that risk, but catastrophic failure seems to be so rare that it's not really a problem in my opinion. The next myth is one that I have briefly discussed in previous videos, but I think it is worth mentioning again and again. That's because the Porsche Cayman will help you get girls.
This myth is found in almost all sports cars, not just the Cayman, but in all cases I can assure you that you will attract more men than women when you own a sports car. car regardless of the model I have said it before in previous videos but I will say it again here if you want to attract men buy a sports car if you want to attract women buy a dog and that brings us to the last myth of the day, which is that the Porsche Cayman is a popular car for most people and I'm talking about normal people, not car nuts like you and me, we have no idea what a Porsche Cayman really is, we tell the average normal person that you have a Cayman, a very common response you'll get is, oh camon, isn't that the big, ugly SUV you see?
We car people live in a very small bubble where everyone we talk to most often has a basic knowledge of car brands. and models I like to remind myself that most people view cars the same way I view women's shoes. Now I can look at a pair and I can appreciate the design from the beginning and have a sort of general understanding of what is better. which brands are the most expensive, what are the poor quality brands, what is a little more fashionable now than a couple of years ago, but at the end of the day I'm not looking around, seeing women's shoes and recognizing what usa brand from a block away.
I certainly don't go online and spend a couple of hours looking at shoes I can never afford just for the fun of it. I know there are people who do and I know there are people who really care about women's shoes and yes I had a hard time expressing an opinion about some shoes I see but I don't really care much about them and if someone came up to me and told me If they said they had the equivalent of a Porsche Cayman in the world of women's footwear, I would do it. I have no idea what they're talking about so I have to remind myself from time to time that that's the way most people around the world see cars, some are cool, some are less cool, but they didn't bother in choosing a 987.
Out of a range of ten different Porsches, the Cayman's production figures are quite low compared to most other Porsches and that means they are quite rare relatively speaking, plus Caymans just aren't that prominent in pop culture, this is not necessarily bad. Although sometimes the rarity of the car means that non-enthusiasts will notice that my Cayman looks a little different than other Porsches they've ever seen and ask me about it when that happens. I really do. I enjoy telling people about the car because I want to try to get them as interested in cars as I am or at least gain a little more knowledge about it because who doesn't want to know something new, so if you have one, come in. or you are planning to own one soon or even if you are just a fan of a Cayman and know someone who is not a car enthusiast and maybe has never heard of Porsche Caymans.
I recommend that you share this video or one of my other videos. with them it's such a cool car you could get them involved with all this car enthusiasm and also if you like Caymans make sure you scroll down and subscribe and while you're down there hit the like button and we'll see you on next time thanks
