Peddle Boat with a Gas Motor!

Jun 03, 2021
What's happening guys? I wanted to show you my new Monaco DLX today. This is a pedal

boat

that I purchased for my rental fleet. Pelican was actually one of the innovators in pedal

boat

s. They have been making these types of boats for a long time. right now I'm going to try to pedal this by myself, let's try it, like I said, these boats have always had an interesting factor in my mind and I just had to have one of the really interesting things is that you can fit two adults and up to three children or what are the specs of this thing five people 695 pounds that's amazing because a lot of times people come with kids and now I have a tandem and then I have a roundabout that I can rent to more than one person but that was it for a long time so which was one of the main reasons I bought this because it can handle multiple people.

However, the problem is that the boat was designed for calm lakes or bodies of water where there is not much tidal movement and I live on a very large river, if you are going to come here all day and want to go down and see the trestle or go around the main loop here on the river or see the broken bridge or go to the island and just spend the whole day here this could be a ton of exercise so I think I'll have to make some slight modifications to this boat to make it a little easier to use, well upon closer inspection I saw that this aluminum tube is crimped into this jack, so it would have to be destroyed, this was the point of no return.

More Interesting Facts About,

peddle boat with a gas motor...

I had no intention of reassembling any of these pieces, the big paddle wheel probably could have done that. It would come apart a little easier if I had unscrewed it, but I tend to be a little stubborn, for example, things built to last a lifetime or a few days in my presence, these little pieces left over from the rudder, here we are going to make nice covers, maybe. the same color and the right size to fill the hole where the pedals used to be, a little super glue would hold them in place for now, later I would go in and waterproof them and secure them a little better, but more on that in a minute.

Now I had another chance to cut this out and it turned out to be a lot of work, but I knew it would be worth it without needing a tiller handle. I was going to have to plug that hole, so I cut a template out of some cardboard, but I happen to have it lying around, not to mention some more starboard. I love this spot and thought the black starboard just wouldn't look good enough, so I started working on an accent after all. We're not animals, okay, that looks better, of course, you know how to make it look good.

Speaking of which, I don't need the second hatch anymore, but I think it would look better if it was there, so let's cut this thing in half and make it. Fitting it in was too thick and only needing one part wouldn't make fitting it in any easier, but these two halves would be welded together. It was amazing how sturdy this little piece of plastic was once I had it. that fit with everything, so it was time to glue things together. I couldn't think of anything better than 5200. The first thing was everything up front. I screwed it on so it would fit nice and secure, then I covered the screws with This little trim piece and finished it with the Scottie mount, then I went to the back to glue the transom on, slathered on a bunch of 5200 and put this thing on on the strongest part of the boat, then I glued the reinforcements.
The exterior ones first, had a bunch of screws on both the side and the back, then I screwed the whole thing to the boat. I also used a bunch of screws and didn't want this to go anywhere and then covered those screws. the interior with the second custom, a minimal amount of screws kept them in place and all the screws that were in the back I covered with five layers of starboard, four thick and one thin, little by little this was becoming a Signature Series boat for me. it's holding everything together and then a few big screws to hold the whole thing firmly and structurally it was almost done, just a few things left, this metal transom cover and the white trim pieces that would hide the cut ends of all the layers starboard. so not only was it done structurally and now it also looked good without skimping on details.
I bet the Pelican designers would be happy to see that they even took the time to cover the small area where the friction rail meets hmm, I even paid attention to the other details, like I need to saddle this boat and you don't row, hold it and if I fish from this boat I would need a rod holder. Turns out I had some left over from a previous project and then from Of course, if I was going fishing, I was going to need a place to put my stuff. I couldn't just have them popping up everywhere here with the roundabout store.
We had some of these rigging nets. I think they are called throws. so I resized a little bit and then screwed them to the boat, one on each side at the front, and this way I would have plenty of room for things like a plane clap, which is much better. Convenience would be nice too, but this bowl wasn't. I'm not going to show off that house, so I'll cut it out and use the foam inside to take some photos. I have done this before. You just need a backup, the poem, and some material to cover it.
Wrap it all up nicely and next thing you know you have a fishing screw on the back of the seat and this was going to be a lot more comfortable than the hard top plastic seats, after all I tend to spend a lot of time in the water yeah , that's better, it's about time. To think about a battery, if I was going to have one of these on the boat, I need a place for it. The second half of that patch cover I cut might work. I had to make the hole bigger. The first hole was there. because I had to cut the thing off because, like I said, it was welded together, and then I went here and got a star board and proceeded to make a box out of it.
This part was pretty easy and fun, but it required a lot of fitting testing. and I had to dig deep into the starboard battery cover that was starting to come together so far it fit pretty well and I needed a place to put the cables, then I needed a cover and some small reinforcements to strengthen everything after all. I imagine crawling over this thing to get to the back seats. These little nylon hinges would make wiring the battery easier and to make it easier on the eyes and anyone crawling on it, I thought I would add another cushion next. my little bench of tricks I got some screws and attached what Pelican likes to call rocket launchers.
These little pieces of plastic turn that mark into a rod holder this way if you're sitting in the front you have a place to put the bottom wheel like me. I went on to make this Pelican boat my own. I decided I was going to need a place for the cameras. I have to document this with the transom in place and no handle. I needed two straps instead of one. I had straps lying around. I sewed them. together and as they say in Brooklyn bada-bing and oh yeah, before I forget, the places where the pedals went through needed to be covered and waterproofed by putting a bunch of 5200s in there, they grabbed those covers that I glued on earlier, I did everything Super tight on the side of the front where the paddle wheel used to be and decided to put some starboard and a mount on it.
My friends at Scottie provided me with a bull mount on which I attached my custom iPad stand. I had a life-proof case for my iPad so I wouldn't have to worry about it getting wet and this way I would have something to listen to while I was out there. There are some simple things like cleats to be able to tie the boat. -Skate to avoid falling at this point. I can't imagine needing much more. All I have left to do is put this in the water and give it a try with the new propulsion. This time, what I'm going to do.
Am I going to use this trolling

motor

that has a remote box where you can steer and go forward and backward from here? Well, today I brought my friend Richie, he will help me test this boat. Okay I thought I'd do a proper test I should have at least two adults well I guess in the eyes of the law we're adults let's see what I can drive yeah buddy okay go ahead mm-hmm that's got five speeds up forward. Wow, that's great and now we have all this leg room right here look, this is great, this thing moves pretty good, average, well let's see if we can put some music on here, yes sir, life doesn't It's more than a dream, but I tell you this could be good for people. who are going to rent kayaks, but for me personally I think I might want to do something a little more exciting.
I'm going to head back to the dock because something was on my brain as we were walking back, my mind was exploding with ideas. I could see myself fishing from this thing and going a little faster even though we were going pretty well. I had some delusions of grandeur, well they were delusions, at this point everyone else seemed to be very excited to see me make this happen, including my friend Todd, what do you think the first thing Todd should do is take the electric

motor

off the boat What includes the nice cover and the battery along with my 5 horsepower Coleman gasoline engine?
This wonderful little outboard motor will probably push this boat around a bit? faster than that fifty five pound thrust rolling motor needless to say I was a little excited to see if this would work or not we're set so far it's working just try to speed it up a little okay I'm going to sit right on the center, that's actually quite comfortable, let's see if it works. Oh, I have to sit up front with the boat properly ballasted. It moved along the water quite quickly. It's much faster than these boats were meant to go. Let's go back and try to get in. the Sun, and I still wasn't sure if I had it on the plane or not, when I finally got it on the plane, it would move a little faster, but not without some problems, if the propellers came out of the water.
Look, I was worried that the transom is too high on the shaft and it's too low, that means the guys coming out of the water are going to cavitate and slow down so, well, I guess that's something we can do about it. I also returned to the dock and was almost done for the day. The sun was setting and I was quite tired. I would deal with this new problem tomorrow. The next morning was rainy and cold and I decided to work on a support that would help. I lowered the engine about five inches, it was like a temporary solution just to see if it would work, but it had to be very strong. 5200, don't open it, but this thing fell apart.
I could lose the engine, so I built it. It was pretty strong, the star board helped hold the wood together, so it was functional, not only did it look good, although you know, even though it was temporary, I had to add little accents, like I said, it's a damn thing about these little ones. blue accents with some heavy duty 90's, possibly my favorite glue, then it was time to attach this to the boat. I was going to use some very large bolts again. I didn't want this to fall apart, a few extra screws and they would support my weight. which is a lot more force than that little motor to produce probably the next thing was to see if I can get my hand in there to tighten the tie downs or whatever they call them, it was tight but I managed it too.
I was glad to see that. the rudder handle cleared the original transom I built, let's do this last hurdle, you can see here, the extension handle is hitting the Bimini straps in that current situation, so I'm going to change this situation which was pretty easy to fix adding a pair of eyes right above the seats, okay, one of the last things I want to do is take this piece and put it on the bottom and that will help deflect the water from going up there because I actually just did a test and It was taking water out and splashing the engine so I'm going to drill this piece and then we'll do a test it should work better.
It was finally time to see if I could get this boat on a consistent basis. on a plane, this is a pretty ridiculous setup, it moves pretty well like this, but as soon as the deck opens, let's see what happens when I turn it a little. The engines take a while, maybe if I feel better forward, I felt like this boat was finally there. Starting to rise to the surface of the water you can hear the pitch and shift of the engine, you can feel it going a little faster, although it wasn't the most comfortable to drive it was certainly a lot of fun here on my laptop.
GPS, you can see she was doing about 10 miles an hour, it felt like she was doing 50. I would call it a success now, if I took this boat alone I could move no matter what the tide was doing. On this big river, considering how well the 5hp motor works in my Raider bass, I'm not sure if I'll really be using it on the Monica too often in the future, but it's been an extremely interesting and fun build. It was very surprising to learn how ballasting the boat with a little weight in the front or rear would make a difference in how it handled, not to mention the fact that a few inches up or down with the engine made a big difference if the boatwas or was not.
The propeller would come out of the water, so I guess it was not only fun but also very educational. I'm glad I was brave enough to jump on this boat and have some fun with it, although I have to say it was pretty fun. with just the paddles, I might have to get another one of these and keep it in stock. Well, I must say it's a lot of fun, but it's not really practical unless you fill the shifter with trim tabs on this boat, so you might as well just call. is closed for now. I hope you enjoy this type of stuff and like I said, this willAt least it has an electric motor and I will be renting it out to people back home for injuries here in Ruskin, Florida.
