One UI 6.1 & Galaxy AI on Galaxy Z Flip 4: All the Best Changes!

May 12, 2024
One UI 6.1 will finally roll out to 2022 Samsung Galaxy devices, including this Galaxy Z Flip 4. I received it yesterday on my Korean model, so I wanted to share all the news about this update. As expected, this update is mainly about Galaxy AI, but it also brings other nice and understated

changes

to this phone. There were some initial rumors that Samsung might not bring the Galaxy's AI features to the Flip 4, so I'm very glad that's not the case. Before we jump into all the new features and

changes

, it would be great if you subscribed to the channel. It really helps me and the channel.

Well, first we need to start with all the new Galaxy AI features, which is actually almost everything there is in the latest S24 series. Luckily, my favorite made it, which is Circle to Search. Simply tap and hold the home button or navigation bar to activate it, where you can outline whatever you want to perform an image search. This is really useful when you want to search for a product you saw but don't know the brand or name. And for people who work with different languages or need help understanding a non-native language, Circle to Search also allows them to translate the entire screen.

I use it all the time to read some difficult Korean articles online or read random Chinese tech articles. Outside of   Circle to Search, you get additional navigation help with Browsing Assist. This is only available in the Samsung Internet Browser, but is very useful for summarizing and translating websites.   It's really perfect for getting bullet points from articles that are too long to read. And   since you have Circle to search and you can also translate with this, I assume you have both options   to translate what appears on the screen. Now, if you want to save these summaries or jot things down in Samsung Notes, Galaxy AI helps you too.

Now you can use AI to format, summarize, proofread, translate and even generate covers for your notes, which is really cool. These features help with translation, but there are other dedicated translation AI features that Samsung included. There's Chat Translate, which translates everything you type into the language you want while also translating every message you receive into the language you actually understand. I still prefer Google's version on the Google Pixel because I think more languages are supported. But Samsung also just added support for additional languages, so I'm sure this will be much more useful to many users than it was just 2 months ago.

And   just to make sure that what you're saying makes tonal sense, Chat Assist helps you correct your grammar   and also gives you multiple different options for saying what you're trying to say,   which is very helpful. The

best

part is that this also works in your own language, so you can get great help for an important email, maybe even an essay or something. There is also the new Interpreter feature in the quick panel. This is dedicated to talking to someone in person who speaks another language than yours. Very useful if you are traveling and need to ask someone something.
Lastly, we have Live Translate, which translates phone calls in real time. It's a really cool idea, but in practice it's too slow and the AI voice will deter people from picking up the phone, so it's not my favorite, but it's there and could be useful for situations like emergencies when traveling. . One thing I do think is a nice touch is the text recognition via the camera. No need to open a translation app.  You simply point your camera, press the T button, and directly translate what you're seeing. Last but not least is Transcript Assist, which not only helps transcribe voice recordings but also creates summaries.
This would have been very useful for me in college to summarize lectures, but I guess I can try it for my work meetings from now on. Moving on, obviously One UI hasn't changed much in terms of appearance, but there are some new customization options. First of all, the wallpaper you've seen throughout this video is completely AI-generated using the new generative wallpaper feature. The indications are quite limited, but they are still interesting and we hope that Samsung can expand them with future updates. Speaking of wallpapers, there are some new wallpaper decoration options. You can apply frames and add effects to emphasize the theme and really personalize your wallpaper.  Then, for the lock screen and always-on display, there are now a few more widgets available, including weather, Samsung Health, clock, and a few more.   Unfortunately, there's not much new with the cover screen, which is a shame.
Another bummer is that in the Gallery app, the Flip 4 doesn't have the Instant Slow-Mo feature that is on the S24 series.   Unlike all other cloud-dependent AI features, Instant Slow-Mo happens on the S24 series device. It's a shame it didn't appear in the Flip 4, but I guess that part makes some sense. But as I mentioned, all the other AI stuff is here. This way, you get automatic AI editing recommendations to improve your photos and videos. Of course, there is the new generative editing that allows you to select, move, delete and replace objects or subjects in your photos.
I actually used this on a recent family photo and it worked much better than I expected, so I really appreciate this feature now. And just like on iOS, you can select or crop something from a photo and easily turn it into a custom sticker, which is fun. You can even copy that cutout and paste it into another image. For video editing, you can now control the playback speed to speed up or slow down parts of the video. Samsung also lets you export your Studio projects so you can continue your editing on another Samsung phone, tablet, or PC, which is great.
It's good that Samsung is always improving the native video editor every year considering how short content videos are taking over the internet, so this will be really useful for many users. Another useful and streamlined update is the new Samsung Find app. Samsung's device tracking features are now part of a centralized app that replaces the SmartThings Find app to locate and track all your Galaxy devices and accessories. If you ever lose something, you can find it or protect your data using this app. You can also share your location with family or friends, which is nice, especially if you have kids or just have fun locating each other as friends.
Aside from those changes, many of the other changes are more subtle and more for the techies, like most of you still watching this video. For us multitaskers, when all the popups are minimized, there is now a button to reopen them all at once. Samsung's Internet Browser finally includes tab groups and tab syncing, where you can pick up where you left off between Samsung devices. Honestly, I'm not a regular Samsung Internet user, so I'm surprised this wasn't here before. For Modes and Routines, there is now a new widget to turn modes on and off directly from the home screen and there are also some new Routines conditions available.
Now, I don't know if I'll use the new Mode widget, but I'm a big fan and user of Modes and Routines.   Honestly, a big thanks to Samsung who continues to improve this part of One UI. This update also brings new battery protection features that are definitely useful for older phones like this Flip 4 or older. Basic protection maintains the charge between 95 and 100% to extend battery life. But you can also adapt to pause charging while you sleep and finish it just when you are about to wake up. Or you can even opt for maximum protection by allowing your phone to charge itself up to 80%.
Overall, while I'm a little bummed that there weren't any custom changes for the Flip form factor, I'm very happy that basically all of the new Galaxy AI features made it here, especially those that help with search and translation. I also noticed that the UI navigation seems a little faster and the animations seem a little smoother. Considering how good this update looks on this phone, I still think there's a lot of life left for this Galaxy Z Flip 4. Those are just my thoughts on One UI 6.1 on the Flip 4. Let me know in the comments if you received the update on your Galaxy device from last year or earlier and what you think about everything new.
