Nicola Thorp Talks About Mental Health As We Remember Presenter Caroline Flack | This Morning

Feb 18, 2020
we're discussing the stuff everyone's talking about today, we're joined by Nicola, he thought, and after you write, welcome to bow, obviously, the story everyone's talking about and has been talking about since Saturday the night is the very, very sad news that Caroline Flack has taken her own life. What were your first thoughts, Nicola, when you heard about

this

? I mean, she was with a group of friends and we're all pretty open about our

mental

health

issues and yeah, the mood was really bleak. I think probably also because we weren't necessarily surprised because look at what they know, the spotlight

this

woman was being placed under and reasonably so obviously through CPS due to alleged assault charges, etc.

I experienced, you know, suicide attempt, suicidal thoughts, etc. yourself, yes, in 2012 and it was just when the people close to me knew what was happening now to think that someone in the d world could find details of that level of my personal life simply by going online and searching with me and commenting it's very, very difficult and what we need to

remember

is that a lot of people say they know well she played the game she was in the public eye now everyone is in the public eye today in terms of social media everyone was searchable and I strongly believe that victims of domestic violence should not be named in the press and I actually don't think there is much of a case for the alleged accuser who would supposedly be the alleged perpetrator to be named in the press due to stress and the issue of

mental

health

that comes with celebrity mathew ain't they called the police none of us absolutely know what? they found and what happened was a bit of speculation, but that will be reported if you're in the public eye.

I'm generally with Nicola. I don't have much of a problem with CPS. It's ridiculous that people do it. ke allegations against CPS when they themselves haven't seen all the evidence that CPS may have a mass so I think we have to Park that I am I share a lot of the views we heard from Emma Jones actually you know we had an investigation of Leveson in part due to excesses in the press. The Inquirer came in two parts, the first part was only half accepted and the second part was totally ignored for the very real price part.

I have part of the problem for you and now I would like to see myself as part of the solution. I think that certain newspapers, like some of those that have already been mentioned about her death, are writing articles about her and simultaneously putting up boxes about her mental health care and I I think there's a disconnect, whether conscious or unconscious, in newspapers that somehow think you can advocate for mental health by putting up hotline numbers and throwing everyone out at the same time, but what a big change the Social media gives newspapers another outlet, doesn't it? we're just doing what's in the public's interest we're representing public sentiment but really public sentiment is just as divided on that as it is on everything else about what they're very selective about which side essentially is just an extension of what the press is posting anyway, it's done, yeah, that immediate feedback, I mean, I was horrified by some of the stuff I read this

morning

, even about copying stuff about her mental health, blaming her, blaming her. mental health because of what happened to him and I think it's worth saying because I have the platform maybe to do it but depression isn't always this sorry suicide it's not always something prolonged that's premeditated it can be something that a lot of people say that she chose to end her life it's not a choice suicide is something that happens when you have no choice and it can happen like this and it's scary to believe you have no choice but i just t the size only people left behind as you say that a lot of people loved you yes you had a choice you could have googled me mom yes and she and she had even talked about the fact that she felt like a burden and i think it's worth letting people know that's what's going on in the mind of someone suffering from mental health problems is that they feel that they are a burden to you
