Nick Mason - The Saucerful of Secrets - Tour Kit Rundown

Mar 23, 2024
foreigner 1993 I think they made the drums for that Division Bell guy until this was more or less finished during the Covet shutdown and basically what I did with this was I decided to go up a size all the way. The previous kit consisted of 20 22-inch bass drums. This is because everything is an inch or two larger, which I have to say worked out really well. Some of them have separate controls. The larger sizes just have a little more hope to them. What else? To say that, I mean that's really the other main element of this kit is the artwork that is based on a well known painting by Japanese artists called focusai that they painted hundreds of years ago and I originally had an old one that I had my Ludwig painted so by a woman named Katie Hepburn who I met, I think possibly through Terry Gilligan, although in Gillian from Monty Python because she did a lot of the artwork on the Monty Python show, we talked, I think we talked a little bit about what we wanted to do and how to do it and the kit that kit is now on the VNA at the Pink Floyd exhibition and it still looks fantastic.

The interesting thing is that it is now 40 years old and now has a patina on it, so it actually looks really good. quite nice and these drums are a little lighter in color. We did a time lapse in a series of time lapse pieces of her doing the painting because I think it actually took three or four months to do, a lot of stripping and re-layering it and then putting more layers on it and finally finishing it with a lacquer to treat to protect it a little from the road, um, what else to say? DW accessories in general, which I really like, so pay Steve. symbols that I've been playing since 1971.

I think when we were playing the monster Jazz Festival, someone from Christ who came said if he'd be interested in being a sponsor. It's absolutely exciting and I've been collecting symbols ever since, which is wonderful. thing because it's surprising how many different sounds there are, one's taste changes, in fact these again are a bit bigger than the symbols that have generally been played over the last 40-odd years. I was trying to look disapprovingly at some kind of novelty symbols and then find I add them to the overseas kit myself, my name is Phil Manchester and I'm the drum tech on Nick Mason, sauce full of

In Seattle, it's always nice to be back in the great city of Seattle and I hope tonight is a good show, you know what we are, we really bless the companies that take care of us and the fans. Great of course DW Drums you know the story behind the painting artwork that Nick is walking you through so we have a 12 that's why we start with 10 12 13 14 Toms 16 18 22 Kick Drum uh , the snare drum is a DW Edge which is an amazing drum, probably one of my favorite drums for recording or for live work, besides those doughy symbols, these are actually eight inch micro hats and then next to them, We have a set of 14 inch dark crisps. hats 18 and 20 uh quick crashes which is a full 22 uh 18 Mega bow ride and uh the last two are a pstx which is like a Sizzle Sizzle symbol and find a 2002 China 24 inch um again, we're blessed if you want taken care of by the gun family and they are just cool symbols and Nick has been working with them for years and we are very blessed to have their support.

Some of the symbols you see are somewhat strange choices, I think something like Ride, but they are mainly used in different sections, different songs, so there are certain symbols in this setup that will change depending on what the set is, these are the ones we're currently using on the current set list for this

tour

, um, and yeah, cool. We know we say we change them from time to time. We're just looking forward to getting a new 22 inch Masters swish that we'll have in the kit soon and that will be the new edition in terms of heads, so again all Remo.
Again, great support from the guys at Remote and I can't thank them enough and appreciate the support and all the kit. The kick drums we're using right now are Power Stroke Three, which is always my kick drum. I had a choice if I could. I can, Tom, as far as we have, these are all code ambassadors on the top and clear ambassadors on the bottom and the same thing we use a cape and a 14 inch Ambassador in the box as well and, you know, the combination of those patches. with the DW battery it is a perfect match and everything is fine.
The drums, actually, with Nick is compared to other drummers where you have, what you're trying to get is basically like a good drum tuning that will sit. Well, the whole set with Nick is slightly different because there are a lot of songs that he plays on Mallet, so he gives an example. The drum reference he used when tuning them is for a song called set the controls the heart of the sun that Nick plays with mallets and it's quite rhythmic in the way he plays. The beats on the timpani it's a pretty rhythmic song so actually these drums are tuned to roughly uh um pitches and then we get intervals just to go through the kit and turn it into a nice make a nice Sandy nice foreign brands thanks for that again, these companies Nick has been with a lot of these companies for years and years and years and, you know, it's kind of a friendship and a family atmosphere as much as, you know.
I guess a functional vibe is the right thing to do, so yeah, we're very lucky to support the team and the company to support our microphones, that's not my department, but everyone is different. I think we have 191 on the kick drums and Sennheiser I think it's 604 and the time but I would have to check that because I'm not saying I only did the Cowboys and the ground percussion again you know what I feel like the Mega Ball right and the cowboy just used on specific songs in certain parts that are not used in the entire set and the same can be said about the expensive 40 inch symphonic gong striped Tam Tam used as a control set for the heart of the Sun too and uh Nick tells us a pretty funny anecdote that has to do with this gong and uh, yeah, watch the show to find out what that story is, um, but again, it's a great symbol that sounds cool, yeah, part of the set and it's you know, synonymous with bands of that era and Roger Waters tearing it up on stage, I think, and setting it on fire in the past, um DW pedals, so we have 9000 on the kick pedals and finally the kickstand. hi-hat is the DW 5000 hi-hat stand, of course, DW, from DW, here you see every part of the DW Hardware, just like the drums, all the symbols are expensive, all the sticks are made by promark, the rhythms are made by Pro mark and, uh, the lamp cushion, you know.
Again, that's the only power I'm caching here, but the DW pilot family is a great addition to Kit, yeah, well, of course, congratulations to DW on number 50. Well, I've certainly been playing DW for most of their life, they just made a I've had a fantastic job, but how many kits have I used so far, because I really like the theme of different drums for different tasks, so I prefer to play slightly smaller drums in situations of study and I certainly would. I don't want a double bass and students, not John Good and Garrison and of course Louis, who actually did the most beautiful job on two of my drums.
One is a dark side guy, which is specific because it was made for a tour where Roger was playing Dark. Side, when I was a guest on some of the shows, including the Hollywood Bowl, and Louis did this bright shiny black kit and a slight glow to it and then the prism goes around it and I don't think I've ever heard the album. So I like it quite a bit and then we went back to doing a fairground kit with very specific art, but there are some great books so that's another big favorite in mind because I love that type of art.
