More Interesting Facts About,

movie breath holding challenge...

Let's go again to the second round. Hey guys, I'm Kevin Zuzaki and I'm the sound designer on the flinch fight video, so in this video. I'm handling all the audio post-production, which includes cleaning up the dialogue, doing the sound effects, and then doing the mix. I've been working with Hall for a few years now and I think the first video we officially made together was a long way off. cry 3 video, we did the split together, we were actually collectively nominated for a Golden Reel award, which is this illustrious award that the sound editing community gives to itself and we lost, so we're an award loser award, nominated but losing sound designer, Kevin Senzaki, right? here the challenge for this video was to make a no contact fight scene as interesting as a normal fight scene, you know, where people punch each other, like that's the point of the fight, we don't have that here, like that than normally in a fight.

In the scene there's what I call a one-two rhythm, which is basically like your whistling before the hit and then the actual hit, so when someone comes to hit, you have to push, hit, woo, it's a one-two, one does the thing and that's usually what you build the pacing of the fight scene around the anticipation, like the whistle, it builds excitement and then you have a release, you have a hit and you play with that in terms of timing, your tone and your pacing, and that's how the fight scene comes together. dramatically in this situation we have all this anticipation, we have all these bumps coming but there is never a solution that I found that I had to do completely for almost everything and completely, those are all those little incidental sounds related to the characters moving, usually it's his steps.

It's usually his cloth that moves, usually you don't need to do much in this fight scene where there are no real punches. I found that by giving it all the way so we could really hear each step, it helped fill the silence created by them. I found that not punching each other in the face rhythmically was really important, so there are a lot of placements, like a little scuff or a little shoe squeak right when they flinch, you get that kind of connection to the character, you get a dramatic response. . when you usually have a big question that people have a lot of times is what's the difference between a sound editor and a sound designer and the answer is we'll do them for the rest of the day until there's one. that none of us can do it we're going to continue until no one is conscious to press play on the next one, what happens if I pass out?
Okay, next is one of my favorite scenes and then after this we're going to have some difficulties, that's it. Tom Cruise after this have you seen Kingsman I don't know well no I know exactly that you are sleeping in your bed we can't say something is wrong so what is the difference between a sound editor and a sound designer ? The answer is nothing. really sound designer is a term made up in a small video like this where I'm all the back sound team, there's no difference, but it's used arbitrarily when someone wants to declare themselves an artist or if you have a group of people. on a show where everyone is doing, you know, sound editorial work and then they want to cast one person as the person with the vision, what I found really interesting in this scene is the way I really addressed whooshes had to be completely different, so In a normal fight scene, the swish is kind of the most dynamic part of the movement.
The swish never sinks properly, you just find what feels right and that takes you to the hit at the end of the swing, but in this video I found that it worked best to sink the swish to the end of the swing when it stops, so it's like this dramatic build, so it's still satisfying in a way. As for the final design, these bushes had to be treated differently to get a lot of the hiss like the part here where Clint keeps hitting, there's actually a 909 kick drum sound effects mix that gives it this kind of power. low end and I felt creative since we don't have any hits that we really want to feel. his power, his movement through the air, so there are all these little extra elements that give you the feeling that the atmosphere is moving away from his fists as he is being cut, it sounds completely crazy that he is saying that. out loud now, but I hope it works.
You know, what I love about doing stylized fight scenes like this is that there's a lot of room to make little sound analogies, because you can make sounds that don't make any literal sense, they can suggest something that makes sense. It's a funny joke, so at the end, as you go along and Clint is doing all the punches, they get louder and build up to this intensity, but by the final moment, to give it this literal surgical knife quality, there's a small knife sound effect there and I thought it made sense even though it's not relaxing, yeah I had a lot of fun doing this, this was a great little challenge because you know I normally can't fight. scene where people don't hit each other, pieces of the way you know nonviolence, so yeah, I think we got it, I don't know, tell me if we did it, I just want to do the impossible, okay guys , They can wait? his breath is longer than Tom Cruise's, yes guys this is very difficult, this is impossible, did you cut this?
I'll go as far as I can. Tom Cruise faints in this scene. You didn't tell them that we can faint too. Hopefully you'll just have to do it while he until he passes out, yeah, once he gets rescued or whatever, you're good too, so hmm, something interesting, you're still going, dear, no, you exhale, you can, in Actually, I forgot about the exhale. I forgot about the exhale. I forgot you can exhale. It helps a lot. In fact, there is more wind. I feel quite dizzy listening to the effects of the film. That's really the hard part.
The heartbeat on the last one scared me, so you have to exhale. You have to get so bad. Out with the bad air, keep the good air in. I was still for like a minute. I still would have had to hold my breath for a minute. I appreciate the air. Do you want to know my pro tips are to hold your breath? Yeah, dude, so some people probably really do free dive. the comments and they will give you real advice, but the general rule of thumb is to hyperventilate as long as you want to hold your breath, breathe throughout your body and then it's the buildup of CO2 in your blood that makes you want to let it like. goes away so it's important to take a big breath in and hold it as long as you can let out a little bit of pressure if you need to and then once you start to feel it let it out slowly to buy yourself some time and then once you this. it's all over, you have another 30 seconds left, relax, focus on slowing your heart rate, don't use your body like you actually did the second time, like you hold your breath until you can't take it anymore and you stop and take a deep breath and something like that. . you get a little dizzy again, you hold your breath again, you'll be able to hold it longer the second time because your body is already adapted to not having as much oxygen, so if you have any other ideas for crazy movie challenges, we should try putting them on. in the comments below and subscribe if you don't want to watch, try it and just in case, here's David Hasselhoff saving someone from a hand grenade.
