More than a Murphy Bed

Jun 08, 2021
It is very good to have an electrician on site to solve problems. I'm not an electrician and I like to have someone who has a little

experience on site so make sure everything is good and safe. We secure that cleat. on the studs, I tried it and it worked great, so now it was time to secure the headboard. These are just some little tacos I made. I decided to do it, I mean, it was very difficult to find a way not to be able to get screws. behind, I didn't want any hardware on the surface, so I just made these little blocks and added dominoes to the header and the blocks themselves.

This was a quick little jig to have something to hold the piece, I just nailed it on. my easel with the ones I made I was able to screw them on the nightstand and on the right side wall. I also added a small nailer to the left side wall to make sure that left side of the headboard didn't float into space. I was then able to insert the dominoes into the slat and sliding the headboard into place required a bit of maneuvering to get everything to fit, but once it was locked it was really nice and strong.

More Interesting Facts About,

more than a murphy bed...

One thing I did notice was that the center of the headboard was a little wobbly, so I made this wedge piece that I simply glued against the back of the headboard. In my workshop I started making the panels that will go on the outside of this folding bed. I want the entire exterior to be painted. I am using this material called truss core, it is MDF on the face and plywood on the inside. I attached it with some poplar edging and then was able to sand it flush and prepare it for veneer. I'm going to veneer just one of these panels and it will be the door that covers the nightstand.

I haven't plated much, but I watched a couple of John Peters videos. He has a ton of videos on how to veneer. I'll put links. down, um, but the basic thing is to just add a contact cement to both the plywood surface and the veneer surface once you have both surfaces completely covered with the contact cement and they're nice and dry. you can put them together and I use these strips just to keep the contact cement off of both panels while I align it. This sticks as soon as it sticks and doesn't come back up, so you have to be very careful to take your time and line it up very, very well.

You should apply a little pressure as you go and make sure there are no air bubbles beneath the surface. After that, you come back with a board and type. To polish it, make sure there is absolutely no place where it hasn't come into contact and then you can turn it over and trim off the excess. I just use a straight razor for this with a nice new sharp blade after that. sand the edge down, make sure there's nothing sticking out and then I can start applying the finish other than this door panel. I need two

panels that I cut and will prime.
These will form the bed panels, the actual panel that the bed goes back on. At the job site I took those bed panels and pinned them to the sides so I could join them together per the instructions they have, keep these two separate, but my client requested it be one panel so to be able to do that I think. It's something like 60 inches wide, so a four by eight sheet isn't wide enough to make it, so I ended up gluing it together. This went pretty well, luckily the bed's hardware structure actually puts it square so I didn't have to do it. worry too much about that.
I also left them long so that once glued, I could cut them to size with the panel glued. I was able to attach the hardware for the kit. The kit comes with some super strong rails that handle. to pull that plywood nice and flat and a ton of screws that screw in along the entire length, it also comes with corner brackets that hold the corners nice and tight. The kit also comes with this aluminum brace that will pull any type of swells or sags in the middle of the panel with the bed panel complete we are ready to set it up to install it and to do so pull back the tension arm and it has this little lock that holds the arm in place and Then you're ready to go, so we brought in the panel.
We definitely needed an extra set of hands for this, so thanks Josh, you pick it up and it has like a little clasp that you then add a couple of bolts to and that's nice. It is quite easy to install. I sanded the glue seam that formed from the glue and then I was able to prep the door. I used this little template from Craig. It is a really very convenient template that I wish I had for a long time. a while ago it was made for European style hinges and it makes it super simple and the number one question I had when I was building this nightstand is why do I need that cutout there and that's why it was made for the interior hinges um because the the door frame is actually located on the inside of that nightstand.
The next small detail is to add the ceiling light cover. This was made with a couple of pieces of walnut wood on the front and is placed in a position like 15 degree angle, this just provides a little bit of protection so if you look towards the light you don't see the lamp itself with that installation. I was able to start preparing the paint when it comes to something like this. I I Don't take any chances, it seems like if I ever leave anything exposed the paint smears so I covered every surface, this took my time with the edges of things and made sure everything was nice and polished so the paint to not get underneath, also caulk all joints where the wall meets the face of the recess.
I started with a primer and primed all the exposed mdf and then went over that with three coats of wall paint, luckily the client had the original paint from the rest of the room so it was easy to match and now just the finishing touches are missing. I reinstalled the door, added a handle, and added the hardware for the foot of the folding bed, so that was it.
