high

ly anticipated non-conference matchup between the Minnehaha Canobie Redhawks and the Hopkins Royals from the Lindbergh Center in Minnetonka John Jacob sent along with Ryan Iverson and Ryan a lot of talk about many high

school

academies this year and its host of stars who have three time defending state champions in qu a now moved up to class 3a and it's really a lot of fun to watch well I've had this one marked on our calendar for quite a while John this is It couldn't be very fun you have these matchups early in the season and I love coaches that schedule tough opponents you want to challenge yourself early and we have Hopkins obviously historically a powerhouse we have great talent on that side and of course many.

Secondary

academy

, a lot of stars on that side, very good for sports players, a lot of great football players playing tonight too, so I'm very excited for Hopkins to come in three inches, ooh, and they're the defending 4a champions, but They lost a lot of good things. players on that team, coach Novak says you know they are a little behind, the worries used to be for his team in mid-December, but the good thing is that only in mid-December you have a lot of time to improve, yeah, and that's . It's a tough thing to witness a championship and Hopkins will always have a target on his back because they've been so good as parents, but when you lose a player like Zeke Nagi who you can see and plan on your TV screen at night In Arizona, doing great things there, you have to establish your own identity and even with players like Kerwin Walton, who is a phenomenal player, it is a new role and then there are a lot of new players who don't have a lot of experience, so it takes time. build it. that and we are still early in the season and I assume that by the end of the year Hopkins will be there, as many in the Academy tend to be dealing with a similar problem, they have some injuries and they are also dealing with the fact that six of their players that you mentioned , two sports players played in the purple, well that was just a day after Thanksgiving, we're only a few weeks into that, so they're a little disjointed at this point in the season.

More Interesting Facts About,

minnehaha academy vs hopkins high school basketball jalen suggs cornell richarson...

I go back to when I played against John and played in two prep bowls. It took us a couple of weeks to get that moment and get conditioned in the

basketball

, so they've only been coming out at full strength for a couple of weeks battling an injury. You certainly don't know the same with Minyak Academy, they are being tested or, but as they get back into top basketball shape and in that rhythm, your horns will want to see a piece of them come playoff time, let's see our key players starting. with Minnehaha cata being one of the best players in the entire country, Jalen sucks, yes he is a phenomenal winner, he is a winner, saw him on the gridiron as a quarterback and left his team in the prep bowl despite that they lost that game he was involved in.

In every play he is just a kid that people want to see play, he is a superstar and tonight I am very excited. I've only seen him a couple of times in person. I'm excited to see how great he is, he's a national recruit and he's even talking about maybe playing professionally overseas right out of high school, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how great he is and how big of a winner he is, how much you make your teammates better; I'm really excited to see him and Hopkins, another senior recruit and also very tall, he leaned against the wall, well we saw him really explode last year in the playoffs, so we saw him have a phenomenal big shooter in the tournament state.

He had a wonderful summer, John, in AU basketball and was putting up great numbers. against some of the best point guards and best players in the country, so he's really taken off, but this is different, he doesn't have Zeke Nachi here with him, this is his team and he has to do everything he can for this team, especially with players inexperienced, so I'm excited to see how his game has evolved since last year. It will also be a lot of fun. We'll see. Hawks and the Royals High School boys basketball begins next here on CCX ccs media, your source for great local programming.

The Royals have a great basketball tradition facing Minnehaha Academy's 3rd and 1st nationally ranked teams. In the season, Hopkins comes in at 3 and 2.
I think for both teams you don't expect to see losses in their schedule so early. They talk about many high academies at the national level. The attention is always on them. They are playing very well. teams around the world turn on the spigot controlled by Hopkins drilling Walton into the hands of Cornell Richardson back to Walton and handing it off to Andre Gray Chuck brings up a no good loose ball on the baseline and picks it up King John Johnson in front a Hopkins Prince alig be in the attacking zone good, interesting Prince, a B league is actually starting Guardian Kerwin Walton, so good size, good length on both sides of both teams they have him all over the court, there are sons with Walton on top of him he backs off now on the dribble so I was looking now we'll do a three off the iron and bounce off a nut take it to the head for Nagi out of his hands and cornered by Suggs in the corner we'll turn on Hopkins down, Nagi with his steel steps in the passing lane, back-to-back turnovers and back to Hopkins, maybe we're still watching football.
Johnson, so some touchdown throws were long, both intercepted, so there were a couple of early turnovers here. Hoshi over Johnson's block turns face, the basket misses the baseline shot and bounces. by Isaiah Davis both teams are really good at defensive rebounding, you can see it early, a good shot into the box and at all five positions there is length and height so you might get a good shot against him but very rarely do you are. You'll get offensive rebounds, especially against Minnehaha Academy. A beetle shot goes up and a foul on Davis. He'll go to the line for two.
Here are the headlines for tonight's game. Prince alig me. Donovan Smith. Jalen sucks Keaton Johnson and I see Davis. for Minnehaha Academy for seniors sophomore in junior and for Hopkins Walton gray Taylor white Cornell Richardson and Elvis Najee for seniors for G's your sophomore year and really one of the first times, John, so I can remember us doing a Hopkins guys game and I'm not too sure Who all the starters work for, Hopkins had to learn a little more about him, so again, they are very talented. It will take some time for them to get where they want, but this is a good opening test for them, Davis.
With two small turns he will shoot out of the pow banner than a mobile or a L Richardson with the basket a little behind well I don't know if you could have defended him better Donovan Smith stayed in front moved his feet but look at that quick turn and every time you manage that little reach there, even if it's not a foul, it looks like a foul and Cornell Richardson, who we've seen before playing for a co in previous years, got off to a great start, what a turnaround. He goes in and out on the free kick and recovers with a league pace.
I'm sure some of our viewers here are wondering where Chet Holmgren is a top recruit here for Minnehaha Academy, one of the top recruits in the country in the junior class. dealing with a groin injury right now and coach Johnson, so they're trying to heal him, you gotta get Cherry Lockett out, he's d1 Football Giants, dealing with the foot injury, hasn't been able to play yet, so they haven't done it. He just hasn't been able to put together a full team as far as injuries, but again football is a student, so these guys are trying to make the transition, they have one written down to the other, it's not easy to do it, just the speed of the games is different than 1000.
My gram, of course, made you famous this summer by crossing Steph Curry, which is pretty phenomenal, but he's become a great player, one of the top two recruits in the country. Oh, we saw his brother, how many of the highlights didn't? It was last year, especially for Hopkins and a great setup here, just a great job, mic and wallet, being the playmaker and throwing up, and what if the young sophomore, Elvis, came up and got it? How would you like to be the Nagi family with all that talent? Coming soon, of course, great great daughter, plan for your son to play in Arizona and Elvis made his presence felt early on.
Davis got fouled by Jean-Pierre White, that's his first foul on the third team, and he brought us back to the line. He has both Red Hawk points. So far the second one is good too, that's for three changes, they run Walton's frontcourt, he backs off the cover, misses the shot now he's fighting for, but Suggs finishes him off, Suggs inside to the track forward, crosses to the basket below the line before he. I'll get to well, two things right there. I thought the illegal prints did a great job of testing those three at their length when you can come in, you know, with a contest with that kind of length, through the team and Walton out, he was a little long on the shot and Jalen I stink.
I think the best part of his game is what we just saw there in transition. He has great height for a six-foot-five guard, but he has excellent strength and you can see how crafty he is. the ball and able to get to the rim and use his body as well as any other Mansa Suggs averaging over twenty-three per game, it's his first two tonight, most of the trip now going inside and Suggs walks with a good low knee now that we have a substitution here for Hopkins Richardson. I got two early fouls in the jail and a cremone six for the junior number one winger in the lineup, but it shows and that's the kind of thing that's normally a little off, but Minnehaha Academy great job rotating and covering the basket what is Portland for white from the corner for three Hopkins back to the front stinks on the line puts it on m42 did you see that body check?
He has that cool and is fast enough to beat you. his first step, but then he has that great body control able to avoid an attack and he had a soft touch able to finish off the wall on this foul on his way to the basket, you know, that's anything for someone like Kerwin, well, John , we saw him have a great season last year, but even with Zeke Nagi and some of the other talented players they had, I think he was able to fly under the radar a little bit this year, everyone knows who he has, they know how great he is, they're going to get it .
He will make the best effort of each team. He has a great athlete defending him tonight. He will have to work on his foul shots on Keaton Johnson. His first foul on the second team was on the corner kick. This goes to White and is rebounded by Johnson Smith. bounce pass will be over the block jump pass through three point attempt not good baseline whistle Marion Watson Salisbury shot six foot six or eight in play out of bounds to the Redhawks but you notice that Hopkins It has a great length, did you notice it? How well the Redhawks are boxing on the other side of the court, there is no one in the paint trying to grab offensive rebounds, they are very good at boxing now, that is something that clearly stands out, huggbees pass intercepted by Sawyer, who is not a direct number 20 sheet towards the lineup now for Hopkins White gives it to right corner Walden Najee in a contact Saugus for the blog trying to generate the charge was so sudden that I don't think it was that powerful of a rule.
I think if Jalen sucks, you could see it. acting right there and I think if I had just played defense I would have young Elvis Nagi try to shoot on me and be successful, but Hopkins tries to go into that matchup, maybe he likes the height and the size if they have that matchup. low four and a half minutes in some of the five Hopkins Hilt you're enjoying tonight at CCX won't get up too hard off the glass he'll fight for the rebound a big offensive board skrelp puts an end to it well, he's promoted you I know he's six foot four , it seems oversized in this game, but the poor guy quickly went up and got it.
Lovely, I went back up, I didn't hesitate, I went up hard, able to get a rare rebound, while I was here on strike defending Suggs. the wing, the last play again, we're going to fight for it, just rip it off and then you have the strength and the quick ability to come back up, that was an impressive play, you know, I wonder about the early, here you can see what happens withKerwin Walton. struggling a bit in the half court John wonders if they can put him in transition before the defense sets up. He is a great shooter.
You want to see it right from the beginning. He really he's forcing the issue here from the beginning and you want to try. release a score like that to the best of my ability I always like to get fouled, you get to the free throw line, that's a great way to calm down and get out of that rhythm there's a question about the number of team fouls or what's the the discussion is here five on the board for Hopkins and three for many highs I think the question is how many of us at Hopkins right now are ready to play again absorbs the incoming move from D and shakes see that's a big look right there trying to get walled in at the little transition there, but I'll tell you Prince alig bees had a great defense all the way to the far right, didn't he lose the wall?
He was defended pretty well there by Chase Carter, a big six-penny sophomore, six-inch sophomore and maybe I was watching him as he was looking at the basket and he had just fumbled the ball, Chase did a great job of rotating. , that's a play, I think with experience and strength, Elvis Nagi is I'm going to grab it, go up instead of trying to do that extra dribble, the lady knocked him down. However, the Redhawks get it back with this little lie and shoot up and in for their first basket tonight and I'd like to see him do it.
Every time he receives the ball I would like to see him even more aggressive because he is a great athlete and the good thing he does is rebound a shot that doesn't go and here comes Minnehaha sucks a foul Salvaggio is the second and that would have been important because he would have been the second on Jalen Suggs if that foul was better than offensive so it's a big play but you could see Suggs, Johnny puts a lot of pressure on your defense and he's a great athlete but he's also a great distributor so you have to know where he is and you also have to know where the shooters are until they said something to the Hopkins crowd right behind him, but the hope was like you're not bothering here or if it was exactly but Niels are always being, you know, every game people will be, you know, the opposing teams will be behind him, right, yeah, football.
You know I covered the warmup bowl he played and then you could see him talking to each other, you know the fans of the other teams - he gets very interactive with them, another steal in an inning for Hopkins, the turnover for many hearts has been a problem, yeah, getting up and scoring the long double is Gray's first basket tonight and it's 11 to nine, how's that going? that gets the bounce from coast to coast, but it wasn't the horse that wasn't pushed, he took it to the middle, no one picked him up, he just got up nicely with a rhythmic throw and knocks him down.
Suggs explodes towards Basket and Lon, there's that explosiveness, that athleticism and I'll tell you how strong he is if you're going to follow him, here's a look, Gracie, yeah, see how close he was to that tree boy, yeah, if you go fall. jaylen sighs you have to make sure he can't shoot you don't want to give him a three point game opportunity Walton Walton is first Suggs free throw is up and he has seven and it's 12 11 Redhawks Lake just over six minutes here in the first half, oh it's a dribble, then I ended up fumbling the ball and then I wanted to make that foul, but he definitely did it on Suggs and that's for Walt, yeah, and I love how the Redhawks defend him, when there's a ball screen on the one where you don't let a shooter or scorer get like that, you want him to feel pressure and every time there's a screen where whoever's being screened comes up and there's Jam and he's grading ball pressure, nothing's been easy. for him and the worst thing you can do is commit that kind of foul number one, which is his second foul number two, you're putting a great free throw shooter on the line here early, it sucks so far, four of four from the line of free throws, if you look at it again, it's a great move, almost a great play, that's where you just have to let it go and try to get back on defense.
Suggs hits both free throws and the Red Hawks with our biggest lead of Three 1411 shrink to try to tie it and Dimas rebounded and left it for the sons. A great size for the high school point guard. Few issues here because he gave us the jump past Jalen Suggs' deep three, not good and it all comes down to Richardson up front. Poorly fast, his pass made four in a row interrupted by Watson Salisbury and out of bounds well, what I think has been most impressive for me is the Benihana Academy defense tonight. They've done a great job of making it difficult for Hopkins. great effort to recover the transition defense that Sitchin missed by Suggs about six rows deep in the stands oh, good health, stripped and then recovered gray shot is passed by Salisbury mini ha with the ball quick pass to the head of the frontcourt to Carter back to Suggs, a pawn on Hannah Tristan leads 24 in the corner, brain took him down, how about Salisbury, only a sophomore, but at 6-foot-6, another tremendously long athletic player in defense, can you see that they are contesting all of Hopkins' shots and on defense?
I think Hopkins is really moving well, he hasn't allowed easy passes into the post so far. I think it was a really well-played defensive game, so it was nice, definitely got the range on him and hit one still, but he knocks it down. Good kick three answered by problems, he has five. points yeah a little spark here off the bench for him and they needed a good driving kick. Because of Richardson, he has that quickness and speed, if he can make decisions like that, it's a big advantage for them. Finney fumbled in the back lane. comes gray on the other side and they foul Lance Johnson, seventeenth-year Minnehaha Academy head coach, three state championships in one role for the Redhawks in two directions and, although they dared me to pass out a salad, others did not really the season, he has done a remarkable job.
He has built the power here and they have had a lot of talent, but I will tell you what you know, everyone who says well, if you have great talent, he should win, it is not that easy, you have to get talented kids and egos to leave Put that aside and play together and care about the common good of the team and I think he's done it as well as anyone. Gray knocks down both free throws to within one point. Minnehaha Kennedy here will take a full timeout. Look at Ken. Novack Jr. 31st year as head coach.
I saw him in the fall. He retired from teaching after last year I didn't even realize what time of year he was. You know, we weren't back in the classroom, but we're really enjoying it and we stopped training tennis. but don't stop coaching basketball now, 31 years incredible, he is a staple in Minnesota high school basketball and everything I just said about Lance Johnson for many high school academies is equally, if not more true, for Ken Novak and he continues to do it, he continues. to teach the game at a high level, it brings a lot of talent to John, but you know, I don't think anyone brings guys together, holds them accountable and brings out the best in these players, like Coach Novak does, this just has a sensation.
It's almost like a college game tonight, isn't it? I mean just the size and the physicality and the athleticism that we're seeing tonight and a great crowd for Tuesday, cold Tuesday night here in December, and that makes the energy in this building has been wonderful. so far it's not the sharpest playing blade, although I mean so far I've committed a lot of fouls and turnovers again. I think if you're Hopkins you know you're losing one with your best player in Long with no points. I think you got it, you'll be happy. with those pretty kids they come off the bench and give them a spark and defensively they're there competing every possession until Johnson gives it to Smith, he chases Carter back, a ball from Smith gets knocked down, but he recovers it, I mean , if you care. my son lost the dribble now I lost it Drake was able to overtake Lee towards the attack zone three from the wing he falls short for the sauce he rushes for the rebound he can't get many three against one Johnson goes back down and gets in he received a foul and it was just a little line for two, yeah, I can't.
Johnson should have taken that one, he said he left it for a leg, it'll be a good job for a B leg, I'm just going to get it here, it's not a very easy pass to catch. and coming up hard, but I'll tell you what happens if you're Hopkins, they want your instead of giving the layup you want a hard drop, make the Redhawks earn it at the free throw line, the first free throw, that's just what you see. leg is six foot six probably around 200 205 pounds just a sophomore I mean, he just looks like a basketball player, doesn't he?
John and a big recruit in the sophomore class, right? You think about a vice president of the league and one of the top recruits. in his class chat, Holmgren, one of the top recruits in his class, Jalen Suggs, of course, in this class they got an incredible amount of talent on that team, one of two for a two-point late game at the point average, but if you top it off with a couple of big football recruits and you have a good starting five, his whistle and a foul here on Donovan Smith on Richardson's drive second on Smith 15 foul on Vinny, ha ha, and he put Shrake straight to the basket. yeah, so old that he gets a foul, they'll be on Suggs on his second kind of late whistle and I, that's a brave decision and a great decision because it will put Sons on their second foul still with nine minutes left in the first half.
It was big, I love Shrike's drive right at Jalen Suggs, even if it was clean, you forced the referee to make that kind of call, so play very smart attacking the basket, free throw straight up and now let's take his arm. he crossed paths and hit him on the head. I mean, I didn't think there was much contact, but I think when you attack hard like that, you force the referee. Sometimes they are human, it is a quick decision. We're not going to catch them well, but often tonight you'll get that call. Oleg will be very far from the basket.
Suggs, oh, and he straight up fouls, lifted him in the air in hopes of forcing a turnover, instead he straight up fouls and is substituted. go to the line and now they're on the double Minnehaha bonus, that would be the only drop. I think for the Royals it's too many files, you catch them in the air and you can see, yeah, the second one that drops is the one that Did you do it? You had it right where you wanted it. That's where you need to avoid getting your hand caught in the cookie jar. Jon, trust me.
I got a lot of cookies when I used to play, but you can't reach for them especially. when the game is defined like this, you have to be able to adjust this to both and Walton is back in the game rebounds for Hopkins forward pass Suggs breaks it destined to cause problems and out of bounds Basketball Hopkins well, you see a couple of times to try to throw the ball forward and transition with Jalen Suggs back on defense and you've got to make sure you get there quickly if that ball hangs in the air, he's like a defensive back coming in and catching it so you know.
I have to be very careful with the ball, I don't throw it and Suggs is there to knock it down, and after Johnson's foot and our foot, the ball lost on the incoming pass and the Redhawks, unable to convert it into points, Richardson will take it to shine. for Hopkins to the baseline and hit the dunker Walton, everyone knows that Drive explodes towards the basket misses the layup on the ball ripped and here the Suns with it for Minnehaha, he will drive to the basket right after a better score. That great strength that you get you can combine with a quick first step, but then you have that body and that strength to be able to make contact, hold on for a little bit and finish, watch him come right into contact and just be able to hold that extra.
In half a second I was able to finish it. I had some friendly words, I think for the Hopkins crowd. I think he said Happy Holidays. I hope you enjoy the holidays, as if he was reading my words correctly. Now it's 15 points for Jalen Suggs. There are 21, well, and he has already gotten to the free throw line a lot, so he has been very aggressive in getting to the basket. The off-balance shot won't go to Richardson and Johnson Suggs' rebound at the corner three certainly won't leave me there. It was lost, it returns to the hands of Suggs, a good fish from that giant that partially moves away from the secondary hands and Hopkins has a three-point try with iron to deserve the credit of regeneration.
I'm on this and the double igby rebound. How about Hopkins challenges every shot? at the rim John didn't give anything easy, it was a great job protecting the paint there, but several good looks for Minnehaha Academy Hopkins just didn't give up on playing great team defense well knocked down, he just lost there to Davis, what What about that alig be feed? there and I didn't know he saw it, he just threw that left hand and was able to find the open man and a good dunk for a good finish. Johnson bounces the Walton, back home, the Red Hawks againThey try to take advantage of these five points. lead such lost back to the attacking zone for Hopkins and a layup and two for trouble has seven nine yes, a frenetic pace, a great effort, dremel really has been the best offense so far for the Royals, the previous possession crew finally they will not have a good open look simply unable to capitalize on the painting goes Debus failed this time heavy mass is Walton challenging a link that was lost at the moment I could not get through a link myself and bounced by Watson Salisbury Davis high of the glass ends he is got 7 or mini has almost a steal Wow on a lot of high canopy FETs so that's your third huh oh yeah that's probably one I shouldn't have linked regan's merit challenge here I think I'd get caught up in the play, right?
I want to try to make a spectacular block against the backboard, you can definitely see the contact, he stuck his arm, I knew he fouled there so let's put him on the third foul, that's a great play for Minnehaha Academy with Jalen Suns coming off of him game here, how's the team in Walton trying to hit that one in transition? We had some athletic plays tonight, a lot of athletic blocks on defense for Barrett, the second one comes out, it's one of two 25:21, six minutes to play. half of the Red Hawks' fight for Oh Minnie's John Finkel Academy, where Hopkins would be without Tremmel and his nine points here in the first half came just, you know, he didn't score much, he comes in and he's been a spark plug that really It is filling. of the point production they normally get from Kerwin Walton, but there is some good pressure defense work playing in the passing lanes, timing this feat and seeing Bank it down for our second dunk of the game, until what a great feeling for Minnehaha you would have .
Of these turnovers I commit because of the defense, some of them just don't care, yeah, and I think that's part of the reason why I time out here, but I noticed to John that both offenses seem to be playing very fast and what you want to do is play under control, you want to play fast, but you don't necessarily want to play fast and just be able to take Ball pressure John Wooden, yeah, yeah, and I had a coach in college, Mike Brey, who is now the coach at Notre Dame, he used to always tell us not to play fast, to play fast and when you play fast you stop thinking that you're just moving and both. teams, I think a little bit doing that, probably because at the time of the game the excitement, the energy, but Hopkins seemed like he was pretty low, did a good job fighting and coming back on the trip, whistled by Davis' good defense in the The baseline cut off the drive and forced Iseya Davis to travel and I'll tell you what the biggest lesson is that they're not going to make shots every game, they may struggle offensively, but they can always play great defense and Hopkins does it. has done. that tonight and really kept them in the game Gray finds trouble Royals back in front great feed I think for Nagi that time and a good shake relocation and he buries it Davis little floater to the face lining up on a nice that's a great point Ultimately for the Redhawks, the here and now will be a bigger factor with Suggs out.
Richardson is fouled inside and will go to the line for a one-on-one. The Royals are in the bonus, there is a big kick. Good job by the post player getting into that space by Trammell and he knew what was in it. By sustaining that follow-through, he's going to get a lot of points here from Trammell, who wasn't used to that, and then Isaiah Davis came in averaging less than five points, well above that. Already in the first half, Richardson misses the front rebound towards the Red Hawks, with a one-point lead it would be Carter and Carl take him to the strong basket from the glass under the foul, he is up and ready to feed the leg well. even though Carter didn't get the points there by turning, that defense has to help and allows big athletes like the B league to crash the boards and do that, that's an open look from Reba Gray to a missed three, a rebound comes in long. to Smith, lob to Luke, be over the blocker, thank you pass underneath, then I get fouled and a fake shot going to the line will be Trent finis for two.
I'll tell you what it will be, it was a big pass, but that's it. where he has to finish, who is able to get to the rim and that little jump hook that could have ended in said very unselfish play and ends up there with his hands ready, a good shot fake, able to get to the free throw line , missing the free throw. shot or his first time to the line tonight 6-2 Junior we can deserve to return to Richardson to mr. pit Hopkins quickly lost in the attacking zone by three with four minutes left on the half wall tonight from the glass good shot by Kerwin Walton his first basket tonight funny, he didn't have a league beyond him so he had a little of that height advantage you can see how strong he is, he plays at a good pace, he goes hard but he is able to stop it, he makes a good shot, then he loses the ball to Mini High Academy and finishes with problems that were going to be called bull, taking care that the shot had not fallen and again.
Kind of an unforced error that goes out of bounds and ends up throwing it to Hopkins and you know, playing that pressure in the passing lane, the Tremmel defense is able to get the steal and what about their offense here in the first half? He has almost half his points if not exactly half, yes, yes, 14 of his 30 so far one shot not good, the ball tipped in the air, an inferior pass at the end by Chase Carter and the sophomores year, the first basket tonight, two quick passes, the ball didn't even touch the ground. Oh I call that the John Jacobson Special right in the leg flying through the air oh that gets the crowd excited oh my gosh his head was in the rim there and what a beautiful turnover finish on the missed quick pass by mini high economy here again in Walton's hands out up white and they'll fix it up again up with gray I have a candidate for our playable yes three points Ryu Walton is not good at getting up high for the rebound Woods Davis now you're Smith oh and the lane shot up and he 'I'll go line up for two, let's take a look at this, this might have to be submitted for a top ten, look at it, go up, pick yourself up, see how high it goes John, oh my god, that was in the middle of the court , that was.
It's not like I was in transition, look at the bench's reaction, we did CPR on the baseline, that was unpleasant. He tries to tie it and everything turns upside down. Alig fathers him, recovers and now goes through it again. for Carter Smith, three rooms passed, these are the two free throws and then he ends up making the three, but what if a leg is there on the big offensive rebound? Oh, I'm going to shoot it from the offensive rebound, white guys in the Merritt mystery couldn't make it, but many oohs and ahhs from three others, this one resonates for Smith, good stop on White's play, he gets the rebound for Hopkins and I saved right there, goodbye, merit, here is the gray for three that are not good and the rebound belongs to Keaton Johnson with a little and a half left now in the first half Redhawks with the basketball I will fight with you I feel like there are some quick shots here the last few possessions and quick threes Carter's great low pass, it's just in Salzburg with his first basket tonight, well, he always gets credit for the pass or for seeing it, but he also got credit, The cutters did a great job getting the cells to the rim, they found Smith's initial steal and it will go away. to the line for two boxes, the foul contact for trouble and Donovan Smith will get back to the line and you can't lose sight of your guy, but how about the sight of Carter throwing that ball right next to the guy's ear? advocate? and good job by Salisbury putting himself in that position catching and raising.
I will tell you that many high academies have a lot of turnovers and missed shots. I think that because of their ability to get to the rim, they commit fouls that they have shot. a lot of free throws in their first half, they're 10 of 19 so far, so a lot of points missed, a lot of points stayed on the board for a lot of hours, but they've certainly gotten there a lot, yeah, good with the second foul excuse. I'm not, I'm just saying this could be a double-digit lead here for Minnie Hawk Adam and if they weren't free throws, but as a coach you love that, that means you're not necessarily setting up four threes. you're attacking that basket aggressively putting pressure on the defense Tristan Lee comes back has the ball for Hopkins with less than a minute left Hawks with their biggest lead right now at five target Johnson aggressively defensively comes out at him explodes on dremel with the basket get a great cut good space and a one-on-one play you have to hit that cutter in the right place and thank God for Hopkins shakes with a great first half added to his total this ball in the offensive zone he has it for Hopkins and he fouled him Watson Salisbury commits his second foul, how many times?
John, have we seen where that ball is loose around midcourt? Hopkins won the sprint to the loose ball and good job shrinking, they are going up the left side trying to finish on the right side able to make contact, they get Suggs back for the offense here they put him in with 22 seconds left and Isaiah Davis too comes back to Shrake misses in the second and one last chance for the Redhawks Suggs will bring him up here with down to 15 seconds to go under Tim the three second goons get up from 15 is not a good ball hit in the air and that It will be the end of the first half good end of the first half a basketball here tonight if Lindbergh Center Jalen Suggs is limited to the final minutes with three missed fouls on that last jump shot attempt, but he scored the points for his team to take them to a two-point lead at halftime at 37 to 35.
Ryan Irish is now standing with Ken Novack jr. Hello coach, the first half was a game with a group of athletes on the court. I thought you guys were very good defensively with the exception of the fouls. What do you think you know? We have to make sure we close gaps. Suggs: We're giving them too much space. I thought our sinks and our fills were delayed a couple of times. We took a couple of second shots. There shouldn't be something happening that kills you offensively. We just didn't extend possession a little bit. We have to hold on a little bit, wait for Kerwin Walden, the only two points, but still you are in this game, other people took the lead, are you happy with that?
You know, yeah, we have to give him gold, no, guys, right now. I haven't worked on it enough, but we need to start looking for more takes. We haven't done it now, so how fun is this. You know, five games into the game, you have a full house, a lot of energy, a lot of energy. Great players on the court, are you having fun? Did you know? Yes, we will see cards. Yeah, okay, John, thanks Ryan, we'll hear from Minnehaha Academy Coach Lance Johnson before the start of the second half. Redhawks High School 3705 basketball tonight at the CCX from the Lindbergh Center with our intermission the second half of the game after this who Scott hey I'm leaving man you wanna ride no I got my car but I actually really really need to go to the bathroom, no, I was right there, the line has like 10 people, you know, I think I'll be the one who will do you good, you wouldn't believe what I was thinking.
I'm definitely excited, yeah, I think I'll grab this and take it home. smart man, did you see how the dog looked at me? 37:35 mini ketamine high leads Hopkins with a Hopkins Boyd's obviously a great basketball program, so last year's state champions Hopkins girls team ranked number one undefeated this year and right now Ryan Iverson waiting with Paige Becker. Well, I have a very special guest at halftime. Miss Paige Becker of the Hopkins women's basketball team. Paige, what's your opinion? Put on your analyst hat. What do you see here in the first half? It's a really good match, but.
They need to stop committing fouls. I mean, this hasn't been a good pace for the game just because they've committed so many fouls. James got into foul trouble. I think Hopkins has turned Minnehaha around pretty well and I'm excited. for the second half I think it was 10 or 11 of 20 from the free throw line if you went to the free throw line 20 times in a half what would you get out of a 20 I liked I wanted to ask you so you know how to chat Holmgren , obviously a great recruit, we have a Jalen SOG, he has the Kerwin wall, you have a lot of important players for you, like someone who is a great player, a great recruit, right?
The kids know each other, they talk a lot, they work together, what is that relationship like with some of the other best players, girls or boys in the state? No, yeah, I'm very close to Chet Jalen Curly and I worked with all of them and it's just that bond that we're all from Minnesota. I think Minnesota basketball is pretty dormant, so what we're trying to do is reach out and build good relationships with each other and just try to spread Minnesota basketball around the country. I am going to go toConnecticut after this season, how does it balance out?
Hey, I want to enjoy my senior year of high school with my friends and family, but you also know that keeping an eye on UConn and knowing what's coming is really hard to do. Yeah, I mean, at the beginning of the season I was a little worried about UConn, but then the coach, you know, told me not to worry at all, just to enjoy your senior season and that's what I'm trying to do because After this high school basketball season it gets really real so I'm just trying to enjoy it and have fun with my girls talking about the Hopkins girls you guys are ranked number one in the state you got Wayzata too , which will be really good this year again.
What do you think is the biggest obstacle for you to repeat as state champions? I think for us it's just not getting complacent. I mean, our closest game so far has been 25 points, so we have to keep working hard and not let all the attention from outside voices get to us and we have a really tough stretch with Chaska Park Center and then Aquinas, a Wisconsin team, so just getting over that hump and dealing with adversity is, I think, what's going to make us stronger. Well, two more questions for You, who spent some time under armor with Chet Holmgren and with Steph Curry, tell us a little story or something about Steph Curry and your encounters with him, probably when I was sitting in the corner.
Ted has the ball against Steph. Steph. It was a garden shed and the shed took a step with one of his moves and he went up and dunked it and I was standing in the corner, I'm laughing like, wow, that was really good, that was really good, shoot juice, did you shoot against curry? If I. I came up with a story, it was a really good test, but I mean crazy stuff, decent shooter, so I guess I'll pick who is the best men's player in the state of Minnesota right now, if you had to pick one, my guy Jalen sucks, thanks.
Much for your time, good luck. I'll see you a couple of times here at CCAC, but we always look forward to it. Well, thanks Paige, back to you, John. Alright, thank you very much, Ryan, thanks to Paige Becker and the exceptional girls at Hopkins. basketball team you can watch them live on CCX on December 28 at 7 p.m. against Park Center, two ranked teams, Hopkins state champions for both boys and girls in 2019. Hopkins boys tonight trail the mini economy high 37:35, take a break to check out some highlights and stats from the First half. We continued our coverage here at CCX when I was 10 years old.
Mom was deported, we had a hard time and I feel like that's why I couldn't finish school. My husband is very supportive in a way that pushed me to go back to school. She wants to have a career. The kids can look up to her, they both keep me motivated to go to school and they see that if I do it like they can do it too, you know, I feel like anything is possible. She was always very familiar with her neighborhood, but one day she stopped at the stop sign for much longer than usual and didn't know if she should go ahead or turn and she was not even sure where she was, it was very unsettling for her. I felt much better with everything my son told me, mom. I don't want you to worry or be afraid. I'll be there for you and we'll figure it out. Don Jacobson Ryan Iverson returns to 3735 mini high Academy leader Hopkins Redhawks number one in class 3a Hopkins number seven for a starting snap this week played some highlights from the first half of the game here tonight at the Lindbergh Center Ryan, who saw some athletic highlights Plays like you mentioned with Kim Novak, there was one right there with Cornell Richardson getting the foul basket, the early dunk for Elvis Nagi feeding Kerwin Walton and also sounds good on shots and good balance for Hopkins Eve, your white knocks you down. the baseline three and Jalen sucks showing his NBA range (that was from really deep sucks going to the basket so) we had 15 points there in the first half so Hopkins going to the line Miha Academy going to the line quite a bit because of Hopkins' fouls, Hopkins is able to counter Jalen, he shakes a big game off the bench and he's able to knock down some of those baskets and then that great dunk from Bray, so our half score time is 3735.
Let's go back to the court. Ryan Iverson. Standing now, it's the first half, too many turnovers for sure, I think we had 11 and I think we were something like 11 of 21 from the free throw line, so that really hurt us, what do you guys have to do? ? What we have to do to win this game here in the second half is not turn the ball over and make free throws. We had to be proud of 20+ free throw attempts, which means your kids get attacked at the basket. It was great and yes, we were getting the line. but we were able to make them, so good luck in the second half, thanks coach, JJ.
Alright, big thanks to the top scorers so far in the game. I mentioned many of the Academy's top Suggs with 15 points. Trouble off the bench with 16 points in There's a big game here tonight for the Hopkins Royals, so Ryan doesn't have it. He presents it very well for mini I Academy. He cuts down on turnovers, especially unforced ones, and then knocks down some of those free throw attempts for Hopkins. What is the password? for them, yeah, I just think for Hopkins they got it, they've got to find a way to give Crewe and Walton some easy looks, they've got to run some plays, get him, you know, on some easy looks where he can get a rhythm and I think defensively. they keep doing what they are doing and they do it without falling if they can, it sucks, the lady does another test and puts it up and in and their lack is more or less the same as what we saw in the first half and I like what the Academy Minnehaha did on his board. for the first round going to the right: Jalen Suggs went down and up, he missed it, but he was able to make that quick jump, he was able to get it back up and cause another fall.
It was on Cornell Richardson, his third free throw missed. another missed free throw opportunity for a mini walk Adam E and on the rebound Richardson the white mound in the hands of Walton an attack from the dribble towards the street and they foul him they go to the line for two, but I like that there was done that time Walt means he didn't settle for a jump shot, he has a great first step, he's a great athlete, he's incredibly fast, and that time he just made contact, I think that's what he's going to have to do because it's over. the lick His length will make it difficult for you to hit jump shots.
He is going to compete very well in the shots, so if the crew member Walton could use his shot as a weapon to fake, take a half step and be able to get to the rim that way, he commits a foul and I always do. think like a scorer if you can get to that free throw line see that ball go in a couple of times that just helps your rhythm 39:37 Redhawks Walton blocked both free throws great turning move Isonzo and missed the shot Richardson attacks and ties it to Hopkins Donovan Smith shouldn't stop that drive no one helped no one picked it up that's rule one stops the basketball that's one of the easiest baskets Hopkins is going to get all night this Suggs with the basketball drives again in gray kicks it to the corner Smith three from there it's a good eight of three in the first half knocks one down here early in the second Redhawks back in front no, she's just outside the block on Johnson's pass from the hand of Walton, but he skips all the way to gray or white, or rather, that's worth the ninety, he's got a couple of full inches of height in the height advantage you want to see him use, use his length from white to gray.
Lee hits the ball and commits a foul. I think about Smith, that's the third one. foul on Donovan Smith incoming pass here for Hopkins she opened missed the shooting wall tried to tip a teammate but Suggs has it in front of Johnson is not right his eyes follow with a dunk and goes to Elvis naxi goes back three attempts falls short for the white rebound to Davis Davis forward to Johnson, you can see how good they are at transition work, they do a great job throwing forward, killing, stinks, throws, he stepped forward, Johnson missed and that's one of those you dream of. ball hanging right there I feel like I can go up and hammer it back to make a great pass from Cape Johnson to lick me watch him bury this so that only the athletes all over the court tell you that Hopkins' defense in the half court has It's been phenomenal and I think Minnehaha Academy has done two things really well here in the second half.
John 1. They are putting Jalen Suggs down and 2. If they can get out and run in transition, they are a good reminder of our CCX game. Each week we choose four of the best plays from the previous week. You can vote for them by visiting our website at CCX media.org, click on the sports tab and then go to the play of the week, brought to you by Chick-fil-a of Maple Grove, the summer spot of the week tonight I was going to say which one you would vote for so far tonight there have been a couple of nice dogs, I think it was Andre Grain who said yes, no. get the first half Suggs with the Duncan tip the last one was very impressive so we've had a couple of options tonight 4639 red honks with our biggest lead of the night let's see how the Seminole Royals respond running here for Minnehaha Walton retires the towel and begins to dry the dirt when Johnson played great defense against him.
Johnson picks him up now as he tries to get the lead, he can't get it here, the Red Hawks are coming again, Davis up and in two, they're getting everyone involved. Here in the second half, I'm Isaiah Tama, six-foot-three, he's the unspoken athlete in this group, but he's had a couple of big athletic plays in that time, a little double-clutch finish, gray rises and three will not. go bounced by Davis back into the hands of Suggs basket oh and that one failed to try a leg count coming Hopkins Richardson Richardson Verne Aziz pass intercepted by Suggs too far for our leg as another turnover would be difficult At the end of the stands, there, Hopkins basketball, you know, if you think about it, at Minnehaha Academy, there are two great examples of the missed alley-oop and then the turnover you make this a 13-point game, so anyway The Academy is explosive. they committed enough turnovers to keep Hopkins in this game nine points Red Hawks lead warm the three are not good rebounds for pulls he is all over the court on his knees both ends of the court now he goes out to the corner open three will not go and the rebound knocked down by Regan Merritt, but I like it, since the tail stinks doesn't force him to do it, he makes the right play, on time, the reduced turns take him out again to shake in 16 points, it's the first half Najee jumps the merit pass 3 not good Donna she fights for the rebound she lost it on the floor and then gets fouled by Johnson talked a lot about Keaton Johnson today number two well, the best football recruits in the state will announce their college decision tomorrow in her signing in Minnesota, one of the teams with a really good program, Wisconsin LSU, among the teams that consider it good to have options like that, well, use your LSU, okay, that's Anna's caliber alone, what an opportunity of win. a national champion this championship this year, but yeah, this multi-acre team was a great football story, obviously last year they won the prep bowl, this year that agonizing loss there on the last play of the game, but they got a lot of very talented players, Terry Lockett, who won't play tonight due to injury, is going to Michigan State, so Jalen Suggs of course was also heavily recruited for football, so a lot of great athletes, many two-way athletes on this team, did not announce their decision but apparently plan to do so. in January he gets the ball here, he takes the shot now, good follow up for Watson Salisbury and he draws the foul Salisbury, you just haven't heard much about a six-foot-six sophomore and you can see how aggressive he plays, how long he is. - That was not an easy ending, why did you go get this ball through contact and still have the means to roll it into the hoop?
It was a good finish, balls in Walton, her third yes, Emily knocks down the free kick. Ten point lead here for Minnie Hayek Adam and it's a touch over the line for two, well you can see they haven't been given anything easy. Kerwin is happy to work. I have some changes to it and I think he likes it. that matchup because he doesn't have the length that they gave him alig B at that time, he's doing a good job of Carter trying to take that load, but stillSo it wasn't easy for Kerwin for a long time, you could tell that was the Red Hawks' game plan tonight he followed Carter. as his second and Walton makes both free throws for six points in the game, four of them here in the second half on free throws.
Dayton Johnson in the front court for the Redhawks, just get the field down eight, they're going to need some curling. Wall probably finished this game with 18 or 20 points. Suggs can't get it to go on naxi rebounds and the Chiefs foul him with an undercut. Carter goes to pick up the foul. Lee, the third of him wanted to appear in the statistics. or anything, John, except Elvis Nagi, with that bounce I knew he was falling and I could still throw him in the air. It's a truly remarkable play. Now you can see many high schools with five early fouls to see if the hot kids could take advantage of what may be coming. that bonus at first Drake opened missed the three was a good sight he just couldn't make it they got the offensive rebound all leaning around Hopkins Johnson's turnover Offensive foul by MacArthur on the scan before the chase Carter picked up three quickly Here I'll tell you what It's not an easy play in the good work, but being in his statute he's a big boy to take that hit and boost.
It was a good play on defense, it's the team's defense, right there he chases Carter, whose father Randy played for. the University of Minnesota is a really good player on the bench, one of the assistant coaches at Minnehaha Academy, but now we will have to sit with the four fouls, a small opportunity here for Hopkins, yes, Walden sounds to score 3 points, bag with his first three we talked about. in the pregame he had a great postseason last year with raisin socks, answers with his second three of the night for Minnehaha and Walton that time had a good view, it's a good arc until he has a good dish, Nagi misses what he They committed a foul and Elvis naxi. to the line for two great passes my length to drive the help throws it out of Nagi at that moment close strong calls to Trent fini his first free kick and goes in for Nagi you know something interesting from a psychological point of view John Kirwan Walton hits his The first three and in about two and a half seconds on the other end, Jalen Suggs responds, he just says, Okay, you've got yours.
I'm going to show you that I would kill, not you, one on two, rebound for a leg shot. You'll be surprised to see him pull again, pull up, get knocked down by a loose straight, fall into Smith's hands, a good drive plate to line up B and Watson Salisbury followed him on the good play to find this guy who He came down the lane and prepared it. but what I love about John in high school basketball is how hard these kids attack the basket, but I also love how hard they defend, they don't give up layups, they keep going, they try to aggressively protect their rim.
Both teams do a really good job. but it's just not easy at all, this is an old school physical basketball game, but it's fun to watch and sit closer to watch. The second one is not good Hopkins with the rebound they were down by eight points here in the second half. 19 on the night at the other end is not good, but Finney's follow-up is over and in he pulled the offensive defense of the Watson Salisbury disaster with Minnie High responding back to the right 54 great is channeled by his son, the line background started straight to move, that's big, okay, I don't see the hands are out of there.
Jaelyn Suggs is normally a very intelligent and intelligent basketball player, that's where you have to try to eliminate that. You have to know how valuable you are to your team. He gets frustrated with that. but I will tell you that Hopkins is changing roles here in the second half, getting eight knockdowns here with eleven and a half minutes left, and he will shoot the bonus and double bonus by a significant amount. For a long time, if I'm them, I'm attacking that basket for Minnehaha C Academy, neither to mark me nor to follow me, eight of nine so far from the free throw line.
You know, you heard Coach Johnson say we have to make free throws. vomits on the other side Hopkins has made his free throws, so when it looked like jinny haha might pull away here John, we got a five point ball game, although Tim Suggs was now out of the game Smith facing Keene Johnson forehand Tremmel just above him Johnson will attack throw the shot not good chip back forward good then it bounced off the wall good team effort Johnson just couldn't finish for long are his hands removed yes, a real foul on Johnson, but I like Kerwin wall at that moment attacking the basket making contact he is an excellent free throw shooter gathers I think Kuja is you also have the opportunity to rest a little it is a frenetic pace you get to the free throw line you become good It seems that your pace increases, it goes up three points and they also have the opportunity to rest and put your defense in first place.
Well, this year they're on the double bonus the rest of the way. 11 minutes left. I'll tell you this is where Prince alig You know, he's just a sophomore, you know, with Chet Holmgren out, Jalen Suggs in foul trouble, this is where they need him to establish his athleticism, his dominance on the side offensive, they need it to be aggressive. Johnson with the basketball, a dribble and then hands. goes to a leg B spells Barry fat cover towards Smith drives the pass into the lane intercepted Elvis nYSCI undercut hard by Johnson soft foul on Teague Johnson I'm thinking I should do it, I mean, he did it, it's hairy, right, yeah, it is trying. to get out of the way and cause it, but definitely the way the file was executed was definitely the right decision and it looked like it had glory on its shoulder almost too well down it probably looked worse than it certainly intended to be, but that's it.
It's scary every time someone leaves their feet and gets cut, you just hold your breath, we throw up again at Nagi, well this is great because it will give him two free throws and allow them to keep possession of the ball. How funny in this game, John, especially at the high school level, a momentum game, hey, and all of a sudden Hopkins comes back with Jalen Suggs on the bench in foul trouble, got a two-point game. Kerwin Walton is starting to warm up a little bit in the double bonus the rest of the way Johnson picked up his forum and sucks Frank, yeah, so Suggs and Johnson, both on the court with four fouls here, Hopkins is in a game here, back to two impulses, following its path.
How the Redhawks respond beautiful outlet pass and Cave Johnson gets a layup Walton for game hits that's what great players do John, he could have had problems in the first half and he came to play here in the second half Davis 3 is not good, the ball went out of bounds, horrible V and his shot was a little more arced there and look how much I thought his shot was a little flat in the first half, he's getting his legs under them and another clean look here, John is the leader, so it is good for the team to buy a many of the best basketball schools in the country and is starting to feel it.
I think you have to get it right to that free throw line, get that rhythm when you see the ball go in and that's what three in a row now, I think it exploded in the second half. Yeah, that was just a miscommunication. See, Donovan Smith got caught on the screen and didn't climb the curtain wall. I'm starting to feel it and his teammates know it, the crowd knows it and what if Hopkins fights with a two now? leading points is not much to talk about many high academies in the great collection of athletes, they are one of the great teams in the best history of Minnesota football.
Here was one of Hopkins in 2008-2009, Royce White and a host of Division One players. undefeated 31 and on the season, four guys were T one for basketball and one Marcus Williams was T 1 for football played in the NFL, not that Marcus Williams is with the Saints, but he finished his NFL career last year with the Bears and the raining cows, micro hammer and just a great collection of talent and 31 and OH on the season and rich Boyd here tonight, who enjoys the Hopkins Royals and that 2009 team that was so good, you know what Trent Lockett was the other player on the team and he wants Arizona State to play only in 2009.
You look at that look at that year, they had all the state championships in that year alone, but I will tell you that they have had some great teams even when I was in the high school, novelty and Steve Hoffert and some. Great teams, great, you know, Chris Humphries of course played here, so they've had talent. Almost every year, Oh Suggs shows up with the shot at Anna's file trying to get her team excited. Nice cut, you can see they're putting in Suggs. down in the polls trying to let him go to work maybe before any help defense can come back in with this strength as a six foot five guard he'll follow you you gotta make sure he doesn't shoot that shot he's had a number of three point game opportunities tonight files on Shrake his fourth will go to the bench 24 points now in the game for Suggs we are tied at 61 as we approach the midway point of the second half Hopkins Minnehaha calamy tonight and CCS huge Hopkins suggests three is no good and receives a foul from White, he will show three.
Oh, we could have a new play of the week. I think they are just Phil's blue gaze that behind his back puts the ball in front. No help for defense. and we see a growing wall, a couple of threes here in the second half, a little rise and at the end, look at the crowd in the background, a lot of dunks for a high school basketball game, John, so this is another free throw, well how about Lance? Johnson at halftime said we have to limit turnovers, make free throws. We've seen the turnovers continue here in the second half and we've seen the missed free throws continue and that's why we have a one point game in Hopkins' favor right now, he made his first five on just two of his last seven from the line trying to make three fray here on this three point free throw a trip to the line is not good but they got the deepest rebound it's better to bounce off the wall and the wall has come play here in the second half I come give him a ball screen and I try to release him on the screen if I can you want to keep growing Walton spilling it 63-62 Hopkins now you have the height there you will take a step back that's good I keep hitting that switch if I could get down and sniff just five feet away and ten inches and he just got the link to shoot over him like he did there 18 second half, boards and swords answers what a great Jam, maybe the biggest dunk of the night, okay we have another player in the league, he has 27 points 65 64, you want your most important players to make the most important plays here, white, down the wall, rice work waiting for the defender to pass and mare with his first basket, you see.
He collected himself there, John, before he let the defender fly, able to finish that shot. Johnson wasn't looking for it, well, he raises his hand in the air to create the steal. I want to play with Suggs, open defensively, free on the wing, turns. and the rebound to White, you see how high he flexed the attack and that was an athletic play, you can feel the energy that the attention to detail, the collective encouragement here from everyone in the crowd had reached a level, you have intensity here In a second. completely different half in the first half her Tremmel Suggs one time when the steel didn't get it back in the middle no she can't get it big be effective enough with that shot here's Johnson good fit my Johnson and attracts contact. or goal line for two now let's look at this electric dunk.
Cross from left to right and watch him go up and finish underpowered on that one too. Both are on. Nice cute cross face line. Do you have to have that strength? Add it to that. dunk, that's what made that special Johnson get to the line for two on Hopkins' last foul on the team, your widest is four, if you're not good, it sucks a little cut and you have to come to the bench so that they take good care of you, that is the downfall. being able to hit it so hard that sometimes you'll cut your wrist or that second forehand free throw that missed free throws continued to be a Bugaboo tonight, but hit the offensive rebound and finished, so they end up two down. the position anyway is as deep as the next one and that's one where Nagi, if you're going to go out and take the ball to throw it there and leave it, oh, I separated Walton a little, raised the glass and entered it, It has been incredible. there one in the second half 20 points in the second half for Kerwin Walden I told you I have time Hopkins was going to have a chance to win this, he had to be in the 20s or in the teens and he came out and made that step back from Suggs three outside the wall the rebounds what is on the court hasplayers on each wing now she goes up and Suggs gets up and blocks Suggs' shot on the other end the shot doesn't go down and bounces Tremmel Suggs continues to shake that something that I I think is really bothering him Davis rebounds no bagging I think he wanted that one It was the fifth foul in Suggs' timeout for many of the Upper Academy.
I have a thumbs up for Jaylen Suggs. Look at it again. You have this feint ball. Great feint. That's simply it. a little soft, I thought it might have been number five, that's a tough play, Redhawks, lucky it wasn't the fall, number five, hot day, that sucks, what we got on that last play you like That is, everything is gelatin, there is no time. jelly, but no, the posts are great, cultivated by Elvis, yes, the intensity in the last, I would say, two and a half minutes, three minutes really building up where you almost feel like every possession is good, something exciting is going to happen, it We have seen. a series of great dunks tonight, but also some great blocks, a fun game, this is the one Jalen Suns goes up, that's really it.
I mean, you have guts when you commit four fouls like that to go up and be able to block that. without going into the body, then I just couldn't finish the other end because of problems, you can see it by looking, it's a thumb that Hopkins coach Scott Westerman now came to the bench, they understand that it's a ring finger, not the thumb, it's kind of definitely shaking that hand, we adjusted to that dunk, but ugh, the crowd sucks, although he came back into the game with three four minutes ago with the four fouls and continues to play aggressively now Hopkins felt like maybe he fouled in the defensive end on the last trip, but he hasn't really changed his game lunch I like Lance Johnson put them in the game there's a big steal to buy dremmel we go forward open and it's Cornel Richardson with his first three tonight he has seven points and that it's huge Hopkins has the biggest lead of the night for them tonight at six, they were behind Tanner Lee in this second half, how about they travel on the defensive end and then the big pass, Richard set up Suggs to win, Is it a blocking fault?
She will go to the line for two grand. comes forward and Richardson with a guy right in his face to tag in, they hit the three and look at their teammates behind them, they are excited and starting to believe they can win this basketball game, first one up is no good , okay, he's had problems from the beginning. I don't see the fingers just bothering him, I mean it's really affecting him and I see, I don't know if it's so much the hand or the wrist, you can see it, Ryan is trying to get it off the second one even though he hits. down 7267 just over five minutes left one Walt what average has he had four Hopkins finds the open player trembles thought about the 3 but Suggs is there Richardson resumes his dribble to gray is skewed one finger puts this on what a big fool that time my gray had a couple of appreciative chops and went and waved at the bullies hits the three and fouled four point plays opportunity followed him Andre Gray 31 points now for Suggs that's a great answer that four points that could reduce this lead to three after all the momentum of going to Hopkins' side.
I will say that Jalen sucks at fighting tonight from the three point line which he was a good three or four feet behind the three point line capable of taking. contact that ends well how big could this play be in the game, if he is able to convert, he does and turns it into a four point play, now it goes back to a three point play or 35 to get out of Walton's hands , turnover for Hopkins. a possession game Suggs to Smith on the wing Smith will drive, he will stop too hard and a rebound Richardson to head his Shrake lifts him and on a good header from Richardson very deep, that is what they must be able to defend without falling and straight comes out ahead of the field nobody Suggs with four rows probably wasn't going to challenge him able to get the basket whistle and a foul and not cringe those will be his fifty and his sons tangled Tom there and cowered won't be happy with the decision and Suggs will go to the line for two oh yeah where was god there?
It's not a file, it wouldn't have been a decision, one or one, not two shots here for Suggs, bonus yards from depth, he's made his last three free throws now 34 points for jaylen Suggs 76-73 Hopkins with 340 left the wall got caught above the three got the man up in the air Suggs gets the block on the wall coming out Minnehaha Davis on the wing trying to get it with her hands out of Watson Salisbury's hands and turnover out of bounds Minnehaha, that's another one of those unnecessary, unforced turnovers played too quickly. I'll tell you it was a great shot, Big Bite.Walden, but it was a good contest that time by Suggs and again risky with those four fouls, but he has the length and size to do it, it was a great contest, there are grays, the best now fall back four and a half courts with three minutes left.
Gray turns to Walden. I think Erwin likes this match. I feel like he could have the length and quickness in that matchup. Richardson is back in the hands of the man on the wall and Johnson or Suggs is fouled. on Johnson, that will be the fifth. I think they're lucky to get that on Johnson, who looked like Suggs could have gotten his hand on that drive, although he chases Carter, we'll check again with Kane Johnson going down with two points. Walton 5 out. of 6 from the free throw line here in the second half he has 22 points, 20 of them came after halftime, well I like what he did there, he got the matchup from Johnson and using his quickness, I think when he saw that a league was off.
That's him when he's taken over this game, I think that B-league length has bothered him on his shot, he got to the free throw, he's got some rhythm, he hit those threes, now he's driving to the basket, really showing the entire offense. repertoire in the second half second free throw also good Donovan Smith in and out Watson Salisbury 7873 Hopkins for five we're going to go talk to coach John Senator I think you're seeing there's blood, I think, on Suggs' uniform that's been there for a while in the role-playing game. I like that it seemed like Coach Novak was almost asked if he was okay with it and as a competitor he said you absolutely don't want to take the bet, the other teams are the best. players out of the game I love that right there Smith 3 is not good and they fight for the rebound that falls, you know, Richardson's hands in the attack zone to Walton on the three oho and now they will jump three not well rebounded by Suggs always looks up the court for Suggs almost too high for Smith, but he crowds and then loses it out of bounds again, the ball is made and that's where you'd like to see Taylor Suggs keep that basketball and put it in his hand to make a play and you love selflessness, but that's where you want the ball to be in the hands of your best players making those decisions with just over two minutes left, suck, go up the steel towards the basket, get out of the crystal, up, 36 for Suggs, they are back in three great defensive plays playing in the passing lanes and how about that big body that controls the turn in the shot Tremmel in the hands of Gray 140 to play in the second half Grail retires - not well worried, tied to the Chiefs Carter is not a smart shot right there you don't want to take a contestant to Suggs for the tie there seventy-eight, all with 115 to go Richardson Fuller up in answers, well, he has the flavor between his legs and gets the share of the back and forward, one minute left 82 78 Sun turns and ties up, oh, and a foul on Richardson received a bit of his arm and commits the foul that will send Suggs back to the line for two, now it's there in the double bonus. it just drops, boy, deep heel, but it shoots better the deeper it is and Richardson, his great cross from left to right that is a gift, a kiss on the board back and forth, we make great shot after great shot, really with both hands, the first free throw. 40 points for Jalen Suggs the second one is good too they came back and late here on the last one why didn't she and Lauritzen communicate they fumbled the ball out of bounds and it came back to the Redhawks watch it again yeah this lost by Richardson, whatever, was starting to look for attention to detail, but how many times does that plane make, you don't think about anything.
Here we'll see what the mini high canopy does tied at 80, 55 seconds left. The Suns give up. the link beats Davis and returns it to Suggs with under 40 to go over one. I would run a second defender, Adam, have him try to surrender, yeah, if you can't, you want to hold one here, but you definitely want to. timeout vinny ha Academy I always go back to Chicago in Utah you never want to let Michael George beat you and the same thing at this level you want to run with a second and a third guy in Jalen Suggs he has more than half your points tonight I'm making someone else beat me I don't want to give him a chance to beat me I hope you weren't disappointed waiting to see Chet homer in play, but wow, what a basketball game we have, it's really intentional all you want.
You've had star power, you've had great dogs, he's a great defensive event outside, he makes some great moves in the dribble transition, you've had a little bit of everything and this is it, you can't ask for anything more than this, yeah , I think so. Your mini Hayek added me. You want to get this down to about 10 seconds and give Jaylen Suggs a chance to get to the basket that fast for that long, so I let him get strong, so I pull two guys toward him and make him go for it. Turn the ball over and if someone else beats you, you don't want to give the star players a chance to beat you at the end of the game.
Here we go, 26.2 seconds left to keep an eye on that caught that in 25 seconds in the back court beat the 10 seconds it's in the front court, down to 15 to go Jalen Suggs with tan will throw a deep back three I'm not well the bounce off my wall of Hopkins d four seconds turn at half court the ball tipped the lamb overtime alig get me up and get the block I'm Walden I'd have a tough shot even if I had a clear shot from there and we'll play overtime that's okay two things there John I think I think both stars The players let the other team get free.
Jalen Suggs retreated, you know, 10 feet behind the three-point line, but then he curled up almost like he wasn't sure how long the laugh was, which was this floor kind of stopped for a second or two. He could have pushed it, I think he had a better shot than that, so okay, let's go to overtime. Keep in mind that Jalen Suggs played the last nine minutes of overtime with four fouls and I love Lance Johnson's decision to air them out. game and that's why this game is tied now why not four more minutes jaelyn sons 41 points for me haha Kanna me Isaiah Davis with 13 no one else in double figures for them for Hopkins Kerwin Walton with 24 points 22 of them in the second half 19 for Jalen triple and no one else in double figures for Hopkins tonight both triples and Walt changing the halves problems with the big score in the first half that wall there with the big score in the second half, so I always think that first minute overtime is really big, anyone who can get that early lead and then turnovers.
I think whoever takes care of the basketball here will win this game. Take a look at some of what Kerwin Walton has done here in the second half tonight. Ryan Iverson. I thought he got to the free throw line there, you can see he stretched here where he hit four 3s, that was a behind-the-back trick, he finishes with the two-handed flush and just one of the many really athletic plays we've ever had. seen tonight. helped lead Hopkins back from a ten point deficit in the second half had a five point lead, although with 205 to go Hopkins did it and they couldn't hold on mini ha I came back I thought they made a couple of unnecessary shots too early right, you want to take the watch they were in the double bonus, maybe force Minnehaha to have to follow them.
Instead, he gave Jalen Suggs a chance to tie this game, Nagi and alig B to go ahead here in overtime four minutes for a winner is Hopkinsville, first possession Walton backs Richardson on the wing heads to Davis good dish for a wall oh you missed it follow up though it's good thanks for playing my friend it's a great trip he's on his quickness and Walton, it's almost probably the easiest look he's ever had. I think he even surprised me how open he was able to finish off an offensive rebound on his first possession in overtime for Minnehaha.
Now Suggs gives up on the wing pass back to Davis to Suggs. Walton pounced on him and tried to release a lone Smith on the right wing with Richardson on top of him. Rigby, they swung him to the right side. This Suggs tried to bring Davis down and was fouled as he approached the defense. Merritt committed the foul a little late trying. to close and two free throws comefor Minnehaha Academy and Isaiah Davis and I think too aggressive in the help - okay, you want Carter to have to beat you, make a good move, come on, just put your hands up and stay there, excuse me.
I, Chris Carter, on the line here, haven't been at the free throw line tonight, the first of two points in the first half, but if Minnehaha somehow doesn't lose this game, I think they'll remember his free throw. You figure it out and you know they left that ton of points and opportunities on that list of free throw lines, where Carter couldn't convert Hopkins, the theft of the two-point lead on the basketball defense and some fouls, time to move the ball away from the triplet. commits the foul reluctant to hand over the ball now go to the bench we are warning for delay of game he is not on the bench yet which Johnson tries to take him to the bench he stinks still pleading his case after the whistle but he commits a foul with 41 points, these are big free throws for criminals, they got the momentum now with Suggs out of the game, you're up; you should be able to score them, give yourself a little protection here, first one up, Tremmel 16 points in the first.
Half actually helped maintain the contingent. Walton was very calm offensively. I disagree. I think his scoring in that first half was absolutely huge. He makes them both here and now has 21 in the second possession game and Suggs is out of many high academies. with Johnson, where does the score come from here for Minnehaha Academy and a turnover? Walton gets the steal in the paint for Hopkins. This is where I think Hopkins learned from the end of regulation. It's okay to take a little time here and get a good result. The shooting wall almost misses on nYSCI through Richardson in the corner and he gets fouled with a leg kick and Richardson will go to the line for two, that's where being in that double bonus is really nice right now because Now you handle whatever little hand falls your way. get to shoot the Hopkins shot the ball very, very effectively tonight from the free throw line, the first one up and in for Cornell Richardson 580 Hopkins here in Ooty, the eighth right, you have to score in overtime the second one, well , even though they have knocked it down. four free throws in his last two possessions Smith freeway went out and Walton rebounded in less than two minutes to go all to Walton back here for Richardson and return to throw nuts run more clock here 135 to pass back behind of merit but knocked out by mini ha, so it's not a turnover, don't you think, John?
If they have played this type of possession game at the end of regulation, they probably want to end up winning in regulation, but by forcing some time you are going to end up forcing me ha ha Academy to have to follow you 125 to continue there is a foul and it will be v in Carter's chase so the sophomore will come out with two points picked up three files in quick succession that the second half had forced the bench and now he will come and sit down for the last time, Trent Finny prepares to come in and out for Richardson, a rare mistake by Hopkins at the free throw line to where Mrs.
Richardson is now. bowler, well I only have two games of possession, still 120 to go, won't be kicked by jump guns, oh I get a phone call from Leon Tremmel and he's slow to get up so he'll go to the line for two, this one night is 204 from free. -Shooting line quite a night of scoring state points, I thought with Suggs in foul trouble when he sat out and especially here in overtime when he lost his chances of a league for him to really take the next step as an offensive player who really looked to get his own shot, he just hasn't been as aggressive offensively tonight.
He thought he had a great defensive first half, especially against Walton. His length and strength did a really good job, but offensively for Videha County, I think he will win a state. championship they are going to need their touchdowns at some point this season they have missed 19 free throws tonight will get the second here 86-81 Great long move by Hopkins to get to the front court from the hands of Tremmel and Andre Gray and receives a foul Smith Florin Donovan Smith Andre Gray to the lion to score eight points tonight and the most memorable man that first half of the donkey and yes, that was what could have been the dunk of the night because it was in the midcourt he just threw himself in no part reached very high.
I thought Waltons was growing when he had to do it behind the back with the two-handed dunk. He was beautiful. Suggs had had a couple of good ones. It has been a very athletic night full of blows yet. a two possession game one on two free throws Smith for three didn't score it well fumble out of bounds from Minnehaha Hopkins basketball 55.8 seconds left so Hopkins left the door open here but I haha unable to convert in hands of deflected gray ball and a turnover to Hopkins that Walton knocked out of bounds, but it will be Minnehaha basketballs if they give them back to the Red Hawks, they still have a chance here, 47 seconds left, for six behind the defense there in the defensive zone. the red is chasing me what they can do offensively here Finney in the hand to the cover with 40 seconds to go deep three four impressions alig being very short bounced ovino finis corner three that comes out rebound from Lake being below that doesn't go and a rebound from Walton and received a foul.
I might do it tonight. I got a figure of six points. You said it. Free throw line walls. Excellent free throw taker. And I'll tell you what Hopkins fought with tonight after the first half and all the nasty trouble they had and they didn't really make it, they never gave up, they kept fighting and fighting and of course Suggs came out in foul trouble, they took advantage of that he really flipped the script here in the second half and overtime and that young man at the free throw line is a big part of that Kurt Walt with a big overtime. in the second half 27 points for Walden Smith in the offensive zone he throws it low and finishes for Isaiah Davis and takes a timeout with 19 seconds left 88 83 30 second timeout for Hopkins reminder of our sports play of the week in CCX presented by maple grove's chick -fil-a go to our website at CCX media.org click on the sports tab go to the weekend's play vote for last week's page favorites sponsors will likely be candidates for play of the week at some point this season I'm guessing this probably wouldn't be a good week because I think all of our options will come from this game, not a lot of games where you got 7-8 dunks throughout the game.
I play in 4 or 5 of them. simply spectacular 88-83 Hopkins needs to take care of the basketball here late, he had a turnover, but not before, his coach, not Mackey, must be impressed with his children's effort to play, Jill, the amount comes to mind head and Davis files it away. I really battled some adversity at the start of the second half and then it seemed like you could go to the mini house forever, not when they were in the middle and you were wondering what you would do with all the firepower, even with Jet Home Gran out of the game , you knew Minnehaha.
He was going to score and you wonder, especially what Wilton started, you know, they had no problem with this in the first half where the score was going to come from, but they made the players step up and the wall, of course, took a step forward, but this was a definitive victory for the team. you missed both then you foul trying to get on the finis rebound and it gives the Red Hawks another chance here that's the worst thing you could want to make up for five you missed the free throw and then you foul so now we're giving them double bonus and a chance to make this a one-possession game that was not a smart play at all by Andre Gray.
Trent Finney will go to the line for two missed free throws in the first half. There are two points tonight. I'm sure what the discussion is here if they thought too much time was wasted off the clock now they didn't put another second in there 16.8 turns with the opportunity to take advantage here for Minnehaha Academy is the first maybe 884 this is big the heat does this, are allowed, you know, obviously the clock stopped, you can press if you're able to get a turnover, you're just one possession down, so that was a big mistake that time by Andre Gray, see if the Red Hawks can take advantage of it. the second one is also good 88 85 16.8 to go and the tremolo is tied gets a foul so we get to the free throws you know bring this back to a moment ago the tremor can convert here you really put pressure on the Red Hawks tremble light two out of two and from the free throw line they both came here and eventually we have another argument about the clock or we're not sure what the referees are going to gather here, like the university or the NBA, no, they can't come to our model and it is not within the rules that they can come and verify the time at the discretion of the referees.
I think the watches are fine, John, yes. I think so too after that, I did three pitches so I don't think there's a discrepancy there, I don't know. if you were wondering who made the mistake, maybe or what, but it's pretty simple, take some time to think about it, the house goes to the line first and there's Maggie, get the first one, now you have two possessions up that have healed you. If you're Hopkins right now, old files you don't want to fall into a three point shot challenge, but stay away and don't fall second, also good two big free throws, right there Hopkins Walton intercepted pass gets fouled with eight seconds. to go that should be felt by everyone walking to the free throw line and it's protected here for Hopkins it's 28 minutes 26 of those coming in the second half and overtime were also good I told them I was going to end up with 28 or 29 later In that one first half, you wouldn't have believed that such a strong berth for the defending state champions in Class 4a and a big win at home would allow them to earn their fourth win of the season, second loss of the year to Red Hawk or for the Red.
The Hawks also asked Creighton Dereham Hall this season when they go home tonight in overtime 90-85, any team with a great game, a great game, a great atmosphere, incredible athletes and players on the court, a lot of fun. Call John, I don't know if we can get through it, that's going to be tough, we'll take a break, Ryan will hear a couple from the Royals in a moment, Hopkins scores a mini hot, well five there in OT and they win it 92 to 85 we will take a break we will return we will finish things from the Limerick Center in ccac after this waiting time there are these four scripts that are about to be scrapped which would possibly start a bushfire how will Smokey behave?
With such a hot situation, the garden knows defense, then Authority, then another spread and finally feels if the selfie ashes are a ritual practice by frequent destruction, but not so much with Smokey Bear, only you can prevent forest fires 90 to 85 Hopkins beats Minnehaha. kattiline on the side of the court come on Ryan Iverson okay, I'm with jaylen Trammell Jalen came into this game averaging four points in the year he finished with 23 he had a monster first half what happened there you know, I know a lot of highs it's a good team . I know we're going to have to go out and play hard.
I knew coming off the bench I was going to have to come out with energy, so I came in trying to do my part and that's what we did as a team, everyone was doing it. stop playing nice and hard. I thought in the first half Kerwin Waltons obviously struggled, he only got two points without you scoring and your play made this game maybe get out of control in the first half. How important was it for you to provide that spark? especially the scoring, you know, like I said, I'm just trying to do my part, but knowing that Kurt shuts down, you know someone has to step up, so stepping up on defense became my go-to. my offense, you know, my shooting, my fast break layup arena. things, so really defense comes from playing hard in the heat, so tonight you guys are down 10 in the second half, what do you say to each other to know you can get back into that game?
Stay solid in Arnage, like just stay solid. Up front we know that a game can change at any time. Coach Novak always tells us that a game can change at any time, so always play hard, you know, play hard, you certainly played hard. I thought they defensively challenged everything at the rim tonight. Not easy at all, what's it like playing defense against a team like that that is full of really talented players, especially offensively? It's tough, but like I say, just playing hard, we always have to play against tough teams like that, you play hard with them.
They will know that they will not back down, they will just accept the challenge and the things that people will allow them the luxury of knowing how big this victory is that will propel them forward here for the rest of the world.season. Well, look, our defense was good, so I got it, we still have a lot of work to do on offense and defense, but looking back it was going to be a good movie to watch, learn from it and move forward. Congratulations on a wonderful game, 23 great points defensively as well and a come-from-behind victory, congratulations, thank you.
Thank you, okay, to you again, John, thank you very much, thank you very much for causing trouble for taking some time with us tonight. Great basketball tonight here at CCX. I hope you enjoyed our entire broadcast tonight. Hopkins defeats Mini High Academy 90-85 in free-for-all overtime. our fantastic team and to Ryan Iverson, I'm John Jacobson, thank you so much for watching high school boys basketball tonight on CC Exports.
