I think probably one of my favorite moments was Charlie and I mean, we've been skating together for 22 years, oh wow, and I think at the 2009 World Championships I felt like it was kind of like that. from the competition and the experience that made us realize that we could really improve their game and what we were capable of, yes, but I mean we ended up winning the competition because of that and I think the disappointment of not getting on the podium was actually this. A really wonderful kind of fires underneath us I think that's when we realized we know what we have to do you have to do it right when a dream becomes a goal yeah it can be a little scary I think I do not know.

If you felt the same, did you have a moment when you realized it? For me, it was actually in 2006 because I was training Kimmie Meissner, who was an Olympian in 2006 and then won the World Championship and that was the first time I was like, oh my God, I skated with someone who was training to become a world champion. . Usually in this part of the show we teach someone how to do one trick and then you know how to do all the tricks, so that's how I feel. It's a really cool moment where you teach me, oh okay, I'll teach you, yeah, I want to do a twizzle, okay, so look, skate again, done, okay, and then we'll do a little jump, let's do five, we need some speed when you and Charlie skated, this was like a signature move of yours, yeah, you did these incredibly fast turns to the right, let me practice them so much that we could tell, based on the sound, that the other people are bleeding in the case if we were. in sync or not, could you, yeah, look at that like what happened here, it's not good for me, the retreat happened, oh my god, I was listening to like the sound of your swords and I thought we were crazy, we were until you said that your show was called Breaking.

it, so after all your Olympic success you went on and basically killed it on Dancing with the Stars and won, yeah, and you too? You thought the show was harder or easier. For you being an ice dancer, I think it was easier just having skated with Charlie my whole life. Are you still working with a partner and getting away from your first-time Olympic experience? You're thinking, okay, I can really jump into something new. and different, yeah, um, so yeah, I loved it, but also last summer, yeah, you got married, yeah, we got married in France in June and then we had a civil ceremony in August in Michigan, which was really nice.

I'm glad it was civil. It was very civilized, yes, unlike our wedding in France, very on the wall, so I know you could do a spiral very well. Yes, what is a spiral? A spiral is when you stand on one foot, one leaf and then lift the other. standing behind you, yeah, like an Airbus, can you dance? I bet I'm going to do the kneeling one and I can just do this, it's going to hit my spiral, but you're like, where do I look? I look? Hey, should I look at you? That seems like a very intimate thing, just Charlie, look at your eyes all the time.
I think that's scary. I've never thought about them, no, yes, oh my God, my cuckoo is going to be torn in half. Oh, okay, that was great. It's that transition from being a competitive athlete to basically entering the normal world, yeah, well, you know, I think as athletes we have tunnel vision, you know, we're so focused on the task at hand and I think trying to find Something that What you're passionate about is a challenge and I think it's something that a lot of athletes go through: it's hard to know yourself outside of the context that you've spent your entire life in, especially when we do it.
When you retire in your 20s, before you're 30 you know that transition can be very jarring. I think having conversations with people and just being open to being uncomfortable isn't very important to me. I feel like stopping skating and being uncomfortable in the context of kind of a step into the unknown, it's been a challenge, but you know what, like your friend, yeah, I'm really impressed that you're back in school, yeah, and as a competitive athlete it is almost impossible to balance a school schedule and a training schedule, there are athletes who do it, but it is very difficult and takes you a long time to overcome.
Yeah, a lot of times I'm in year 13 and I tell people I'm in school and they ask you to get your PhD or your university guide no, Nathan Chen, but I mean, who knows? Yeah, just Nathan when you were competing when you were training and skating. Yes, what was the most difficult item for you to get? I think probably the most challenging or the scariest on our list because I feel like we have to do what we don't, what we do, they became very acrobatic as time went on and for safety reasons we practiced on the ground and then we moved to the ice.
I don't know if I've ever picked anyone up, no, but I guess what. I get up. It would be an honor for me, so I think the first thing we should do is make sure there is only one cube left. Okay, so we need a moment to get up a little easier, so I'll give you this leg up and then I'll kick. this leg up and put it here are you ready? Yeah, oh wait, okay, now can I line them up? You could do it? Oh blood, I'm not getting up again, oh wait, is that right?
Yeah, that's really good and then we can launch. together ah get boom thanks we're going to train another one so I think I'm going to go instead of spinning in a cube like that yeah I'm going to go Wow excuse me are you ready I think I think it's now or never so I did something because I felt like we had worked really hard today. I mean, this looks pretty cool, right? It seems easy. Yeah, I don't want to say I'm a master cocktail mixologist, but whatever is being prepared here. Sure, yeah, what was your favorite moment of the day?
The most unexpected thing that happened to me today was the fall at twizzle point. I mean, are you kidding me, yeah, the precision, yeah, you know, what I love is that you can be the best skater. the whole world and you still make mistakes oh yeah skating is hard no it really is like some people forget that it's so hard it's Jo because people like you do things so beautifully it seems so easy I really feel like we should show everyone our routine Let's create our routine and put all our elements together. We'll be fine, don't forget to make eye contact.
I won't, my God, I would never do it. So what is the opening pose? I think so, for sure. definitely genetically and then we push and then let's sit down, let's start with a spiral, okay, not hot, yes, I like it, do you like your eyelashes, I touched your butt, okay, and now we're going to turn around and do our twizzle , TRUE? trip and land yes we are very fast and now markula yes first let's do many we do this and then wish list beautiful lunge lunge that's it you know we miss our rider Oh another one are we doing another lift?
Oh, fun, well, if that's not gold. medal worthy I don't know what Merrill is thank you so much thank you for having me well be sure to follow Meryl on all her social media Meryl what is her username?
