McLaren 750S 2000-mile Monaco road trip special plus would I buy this or the Ferrari 296 GTB?

Apr 22, 2024
Well, welcome to a new Harry's Garage video and yes, we're not in the garage, we're at the door. I'm at the Auto club house, which is Shadow The Sur and has links to B Heritage, so the guys who founded it. B Heritage bought

this

castle a few years ago and I'm turning it into

this

centre, this car club, they store cars here, you can stay here, all sorts of things and they've been asking me if I

would

come and visit. Now I finally come to visit it, it's a great place. I'll go into more detail later, but the McLaren 750 is the successor to the 720 and I wanted to give it a proper test, so it's a

road

trip

of sorts.

I guess our final destination is in Te and by the time I finished this we

would

have driven about 2,000 m in this car to really find out if it works like a GT car. We know it has incredible performance, but can it be used every day? That's basically what this video is about, just some key details about the 750, what has changed from the 720, obviously because of the name change, it has more power at 750, now about 720 PS and they say that They have lightened it. I think they claim it is 30 kilos lighter than the 7 20, it just needs a slight correction as they have made the carbon sports seats standard equipment instead of the Comfort seats that are actually in this car and that only saves 17 18 kilos by having the standard sports seats, but they made other changes.

More Interesting Facts About,

mclaren 750s 2000 mile monaco road trip special plus would i buy this or the ferrari 296 gtb...

There is a lighter Forge wheel as described. This is actually an optional wheel. They have lightened some of the shocks and suspension. The board is slightly different. Some of the palettes we first saw were adopted. in artour and it's also slightly redesigned and I think it's absolutely stunning this particular example, e

special

ly in this color, this color is serpentine green. I think it suits him very well, it almost reminds me of that color you used to see on McLaren F1. There was a development car that had this color and it just shows the line that people comment on it, they said it's a beautiful car, it also changed on the rear and how they made the rear exhaust, for some reason this wing actually It is raised in the arrow position.

I'm not sure why, but you can see here how the exhaust The central exhaust now looks like the McLaren P1. When you look around this car, one surprise is that you no longer see the engine that was in the 720, so you have this glazed area. here and the strange thing is this is actually glazed, this type of SE pillar here you can see there's a window there, there's a little PTO on the engine Double glazed engine window £5,000 but it lights up so you realize that right in their mirror, but what a design, it's very aerodynamic, very fast, other changes will be made when we drive it, but they've downshifted.

It sounds crazy, but that gives it more acceleration ability. The 720 never lacked performance, but this is even more so and you will go down to 5 seconds at 100 thousand hour, there 2.8 seconds, not at 60 times crazy performance, but it still has this kind of comfort mode when you turn it on and it has this ride quality from this link. suspension without sway bars on this car, they do it very cleverly with this linked hydraulic system, so I'm curious how that works with the kind of data that runs on a big

trip

like we've been doing. I should show you exactly what we've done, we've already driven 600

mile

s in this car just to get here, let's take a look at a map, so we took a ferry from the ports, it was there to the car, here we stayed there overnight , we use Britany fairies, a thing with Britany.
Fairies, I mean I couldn't get over how helpful you were. They saw this car approaching the ferry. They immediately stopped me and put in this huge hydraulic ramp so I could go up to the deck where there was no lift. They knew how to maneuver, they just saw it, they didn't ask, very grateful for that and then when we got off the ferry, same thing, they, the guy got on and just waved at me about the kind of point you always worry about when you take a Dar car like this on a ferry so many thanks to the Britany fairies for not making a fuss and helping out on a car like this this car has a raised nose and I would tick that box because we have noticed that in France you have these areas 30 mph and you have a speed bump from time to time and you need it, but let's get back to the root of it, so yesterday we got out of the car and we were basically down here and we didn't do it. use any automatic route we use normal

road

s and the club here Club the car is based at the gate closest to La Villita is this V Fran Pugo I can barely read it but it is a beautiful area and the last half hour here I didn't I didn't see a car and they were beautiful, wide roads and you just marked it was exquisite, the sun was setting on empty roads, fast roads, yeah, and then we ended up here now, clubs too, it's a really interesting concept, there's no commercialization at all.
About this it's just a beautiful place for car enthusiasts to enjoy the type of roads that are around here and Bob n who owns the property has created this club but it's a very friendly invitation only type of club , but he wants people to do it if they want. To hire this if you are doing a tour in this area or organizing something, this will be a great base that you could use as well. I think there are 13 themed rooms. I think there are 18 beautiful rooms in total. dining rooms we are in the one bedroom suite Exquisite I think it's the Morgan Suite is where we are um that's the thing it has a Morgan grill on the wall but yeah a very traditional and charming chatau there is a bit of a challenging path but that's I go to change and there is a beautiful car shop there and some of the private cars, really interesting cars that I know intimately, Decapit and Citroen SM caret, which I have never seen before.
Bugattis, yes, a lovely place, yes, if you want to know more. then there's a really good website that tells you all kinds of things and how to contact them and I'll put a link in the video description below, but what we're going to do today is we're heading to Onti. that's our final destination, which is if I can find it on a T-map, near ni, it's quite a hike from here, we've been to this area before because you have Mila here, so that's where that famous conduit VI. So we will probably cross to Nees and then take the automatic route.
We do this last stretch on the automatic route, but there are some beautiful areas here. The day we crossed our fingers, it was because of the rain. Today we will see if we can beat the rain and make it to tonight, which is 430

mile

s away, so by the time we get there we will have traveled over 1,000 miles in this car, yes, away from the satat. and Frac is where we are heading to start and I have created free roads to try to stay on the back roads, make the most of the fantastic roads around you, just empty and yes it is now drying up in a bit of rain during the night, but everything looks good.
Yes, what have I learned? I've done 949 km in this car now and have it in completely relaxed mode. I have comfort in handling. Comfort in this gearbox engine. we navigated the map and we've done 24.9 MP G is what we've averaged, but a little different here, but it's such an extreme car that the 750, if you look at its performance, probably drops under 5 seconds to 100 miles per hour, which is just crazy. Incredible performance, but it can actually do the GT Roll very well, it has a decent sized space in the front, but the Comfort setting on the suspension is immediately evident for such an extreme car, but in relaxed mode it is also noticeable how quickly it will do it. go up to seventh gear, but there's torque, there's so much torque, 800 newon m in this car and it's quite low and it hits you, but just to energize the car, what I do immediately is just open there, which is the gearbox . power Trin put it in Sport and then here I can go to manual mode, then I have control over the paddles, I press the arrow, I see the rear wing go up and then a very different type of car just touches it, but I can keep it. in that Comfort suspension mode and I don't really need to set it to sport.
I have tried it and Sport and it is good, but there is no need when we have that kind of distance to do it, do it on your

special

part of the road, but actually this suspension system has a very CL plan and it is one of its starters , but there's a lot of impact on things down here too, we just take a little look down here, yeah, now we have a car that came with 720 and you have to do it with the W, it still doesn't do it with bluetooth, but if I just press this , I can go to whatever I need there, how the controls are made are very clever, very easy to use and I love that that is volume, look at that volume knob, other manufacturers should know how useful a volume knob is, like say there is nothing if you look at the steering wheel, there are no controls on the steering wheel columns, look, I make indicators and lights there, I can do it. my little screen there if I want to change it to tire pressure or whatever.
I have very good cruise control. I don't have radar. Cruise yes, a comment you see on the fuel door says range 405 km, it's uh, I would like that. some bars there to tell me if I'm half full a quarter full whatever but in reality the bar goes up and down but it doesn't really tell you there's no type of indentation that tells you if you're half full or not it just gives you reach and if you're using the performance right, that range can soon slow down and you get a little panicked when you're in Offroad like this because you see, oh I only have a 100km range and then it'll shoot up to 200 is just when you relax again.
Another thing is that the paddles on the McLaren are unique to other cars, as when I move the bottom one I can feel the top one moving too, so they are a rocker system. I tend not to use it as a rocker, but there's something tactile about that movement at the same time as this one, it's sharp, very metallic, quite extended and doesn't leave your hands gripped perfectly where your thumbs aren't on the spokes and the other thing is that This steering wheel is fantastic. I don't know how they did it, but it has the perfect width and grip.
It's really oval, it's not round, it's oval. Your hand just falls naturally on this really beautiful wheel and I also love when you have the arrow and you activate it. I can brake and see the rear wing just popping up to help with brake stability when braking, had CHS drive a 750 around Goodwood on a Goodwood press day and we've been off those

750s

for 20 minutes. Then I got in the Ferrari 296 and drove around Goodwood. The difference between the two cars was also very interesting, but I'll go into more detail on that when we come to the conclusion about this car at the end of the video.
Go ahead, enjoy these still empty roads in the middle of nowhere running through the center of France or the Dooing area of France. Ah well, we just found one hell of a bitter road. This is n106. You see her wondering about everything that is up there. It's been a huge pain just crossing. Here and we are playing with the weather. There is a lot of traveling to get to this area. I'll show you on the map where we are. We commute through Figur Rode and then up here to Meni and basically us. We are trying to get there, we will take the auto route once we are on Mars or NE is our direction, so we went to mday and then you take this n 106 here, this is the highway we are on here and this is a National Park, this whole area and yeah so far it's really good, we had a good run up here, very calm so I'm crossing my fingers every now and then we catch some kind of motor home or something but there are reasonable places to overtake each other.
The thing about this car is it's actually equipped with a standard P Pell tower on a um 750, but you can get the P0 or the P0, it will say somewhere brace, there it is, this is the brace tire, so there is a trao R it is also an optional tire so this is a pretty aggressive summer tire and I was a little surprised when I got to this area there was a mandatory winter tire sign and it is from November 1st to March 31st, today It's March 31st and it's about 12° outside but it's wet, you can see here you know we're going through water up here and every once in a while it rains a little bit, but yeah, let's jump in and see how it continues down here because up here.
It's been absolutely epic, we're going to do the mode, so I handle the fast movement on top of the manual. Fourth, I'll still leave it in Comfort. I want that kind of smooth feel on this kind of wet, dry on wet road, if that makes sense. from time to time it rains a little, one thing I really like is that the windshield wipers are all around, look at the windshield, if I put the windshield wiper there we go and it does that, right? You can see the arc it does, but if I stop the Windshield wipers, come on, windshield wipers, do your thing, just stop, please, there you'll see their parking lot in a moment, they go down a little further, there they go and it gives you a very good view through the windshield.
The McLaren actually has a very deep windshield, so you get a fantastic panoramic view of the outside, it has alwaysbeen a McLaren signature, but on roads like this, when you just look at where the white line is, whether you're crossing the white line. The line is just great, you can almost feel like you can see your toes, something really good about McLaren and the other thing is the honesty in the steering and the brakes, it's one of those things that we all share. Everyone talks about the quality of the steering, the steering field and its hydraulic rack.
I often think while you're doing the test. Driving your car away from a showroom or something, it's pretty hard to get that different feel in the steering when you hit a road like this and have to wait. You know, we traveled about an hour and a half to get to this road. That's when it gives you the confidence and feel through the steering to know what grip you have on the wheels and McLaren has it. Keep going with this car. I also love it in the mirror, I can see the rear wing popping. when I just hit the brakes and because the torque is so big on this 800 Newton M car, what I'm trying to do is use a higher gear down here so it doesn't hit as hard in the corners.
Smoother like this, it has no machines and this road really shows it better, it's just the communication you get from CL, there goes the wing, this road goes on and on, there's also a really nice solid pedal, we're a little hot, just a tap below. Driving on a beautiful surface and I bet it's crazy in the summer. Wow, what we're going to do when we're at the end of this road, we're going to take the automatic route because that's the best way from new to the end. The forecast isn't great, that's because it's going to be wet so it won't be much of a trip, so yeah, you might join us in the morning, hopefully, and a very sunny aunt, but for now .
I'm going to enjoy the N 106 which is deserted. Oh good morning, welcome to Onte and as many regular Harry's Garage viewers will know, I've got a boat here. We've had a boat here. We've been working for over 20 years, so I love it. In this part of the world on the Riviera, we are on T. I think it's the best port in CU, it lives 365 days a year and it's a fantastic place, but when we arrived, oh my God, it was wet, yeah. Chaos, it was very wet, adequate rain. I think we had 40 50 m of rain overnight from Sunday to Monday, now 18 90° sunny, it's 10:00 in the morning and we have a good day ahead of us, really the car, yeah, sitting. there, in the shade, I had to clean up a lot of that Moroccan dust and next thing we're heading to the hills, uh, outside, maritan, the beautiful roads just above, I'm meeting some friends there.
Friend has an A110 exit. I desperately see that the mlar are gathering, so we'll go and do a bit of that and head out. Tonight we will go to Monaco just for dinner and then return home. but um, yeah, just on the boat, something I thought I'd mention, um, this boat. I used to own the boat and then I thought this was crazy. I'm not using it enough and I went to something called yach share Network and that's like this ship. is managed so there are six of us who own this boat and there is a share for sale so if you go to the yacht stock network look for Princess 61 yes there is a chance to own a share of this boat if is of some interest to you, but Now let's get out there, let's make the most of this fantastic weather and I say there are some incredible lines right up here.
Well, it's been a fun morning riding with a couple of friends on their Alp A110s. They know these roads very well. This is your type. from the playground and oh my god what roads are they we're in a quieter place here so I thought I explained what was going on but yeah we went to Shadow Nerf and then from there there's all kinds of ways to go up. routes and then we head to the Napoleon Route right now yeah, what have I learned this morning? I don't know this, this car, this is how it deploys its power when you, these are honest cars to stick with these two and I can obviously, just bury it in the straightaway and right with them, they say from the outside how stable this car looks and how it really doesn't roll why put it in sport.
I'm very interested in how it performs, how it controls its role when it's just doing this hydraulic system, this special linkage system. One thing I've noticed is that if I think, well, this is getting a little tight. I want to select Sports and I'm trying to do it in a corner if I like the Spheres. I guess here on the suspension is under load, it won't change, so this symbol appears, its mode can't change and you have a series of corners and things and then you straighten out a little bit and then P becomes sporty so it can.
It doesn't really change if you're on a dynamic road, it needs a straight before you can change the suspension modes and then I have to keep telling myself to use the revs, there's so much torque at low revs that you're tempted to use that . but to be honest guys I'm using all the revs up to 8,000 RPM and uh yeah so you're right in the yo of the power of the conversation down when you slept the next gear but yeah what a place to live and just have this in your backyard, these roads and if you come, yes, join the week and in the afternoons, the best cyclists on the weekends, which is also their playground, they tend to go out in the mornings in the mornings, but for afternoons, in a glorious area, so what are we? we're going to do, we're going to go to lunch and, um, yeah, the next thing we're going to do is travel to Mono and then come home tomorrow.
Well, we started heading home after having fun last night. We went to Monaco. In fact, we went to the Automobile Club Monaco, that is. situated right on the start line of the circuit and if you are in Monaco at the moment all the barriers are up, I think there is a fast race or something, then they will have a historic Grand Prix this year, as well as the Grand Prix itself, but the Automobile Club of Monaco is very traditional, you actually have to wear a tie and jacket to enter and eat in the restaurant, but the restaurant is good, quite fun, let's say very traditional, so that was last night and yes, we We're going home.
We're actually on the Route Napoleon because it's a good way to get home instead of doing auto routes all the way, but I think it's time to go over some of the things I like and don't like about the car, to summarize what I have discovered after having lived. with this car for a week and so far we have traveled 1,800 kilometers so, God, what is 1,200 Mi? We'll be knocking on 2,000 Mi's door by the time we get home. I don't like. They are hard to find with this. car, there are more inconveniences than total annoyances. I think that's the best way to describe it.
I thought I didn't like the way he looked until he came out of the house, so that's not one, it's other things that you just think, oh. They could be done better when you live with a car like this and take a trip like this. We would have loved to have more space to hide things in the cabin. There is no type of glove box. This is a little small if you have one. two phones, where do you put them? It's that kind of thing in here, which is a little annoying. The other one is great for having all that space behind it, but it's kind of a polished lever, almost so everything just slides around it and propels you around the turn.
Why can't they put some kind of sticky surface or even a rug? It would be better than a small lever. I mentioned the fuel gauge, the fact that it doesn't really have any markings on it, whether it's half full, 3/4 full. It gives you a range that changes dramatically depending on how hard you drive this car, if you're doing an auto route you might see 500km if you're just off the Route Napoleon you'll be lucky I think. I filled it with a range of 220 km, nothing, um, so yes, I would like a proper fuel gauge instead of just the range gauge.
Another bummer, yes the Comfort seats are an option on this car, they're not great, they're okay, but they have it. I don't really have the settings I would like. I wish the seat could tilt. That can not be done. They are quite uncomfortable to adjust. You have to slide your hand down between the tunnel and the seat. and there are some buttons there, you can't go back to see what you're doing, they all do it by touch and I wonder what the real carbon seats, the standard seats, will be like on a ride like this. I can't tell you, but I would. think twice before ordering these so called Comfort seats, that's it, what I don't like, they are not as I say, they are more problems than total dislikes, likes are much easier to overcome, just go back to the cabin that just me loves.
This design I love how adjustable these paddles are to do the steering and the engine mapping or that's so cool and just having them within arm's reach, they're great and while we're in the cockpit I love this vertical mode, you know what? They finally got it. For it to work, it's very easy, you have to connect it to get carplay, it's through a cable, it still doesn't work with Bluetooth, but that's very good. I love the arrow button, you just see the wing go up and then the brake, you know how it works. It works in the whole area you feel, although you are in a very aeroactive type of car.
This is their new button, which is like an M1 button, where you have all your preferences in one button for handling, set everything up there, that works. very good and there are other things I can do here. I won't go into all the details, but you have a drift control if you want, oh yeah, these great, easy ways to adjust how you do the ventilation, which is all the way on and all the way off. the ball about how good it is, very good at things you wouldn't really expect to see from your McLaren. I think this is the time to mention the Goodwood experience when I took this McLaren 750 and a 296 GTB around the Goodwood track.
At 10 minutes apart, the difference between the two was eye-opening and it wasn't what I expected. I entered the McLaren for the first time without power, it's a circuit I know reasonably well and I was able to get around it much faster than I expected. I felt very comfortable in the car, the power, the stability in the corners, the feel, we were going very fast on the back straight and this break at the end of the lavender straight, you are at 170, you want a very stable platform at that moment , bang. on the brakes, pedals absolutely solid, turns like a fast stream into the chicane and then you go down that straight and just with the acceleration from that point you have to work hard to go to the red line, it's incredibly fast going down the pit straight and the performance It's just epic and me and I just wanted to do more and more laps.
Then I jumped on the 296 and was immediately impressed by the power, only with that electric boost we took off in the first corner off the pit straight and F water and the pedal. It's a little softer, I thought, oh, they'll put some heat into the disc, it will come, the brakes will come in, they didn't, it always stayed that way and then there's the nameless one as you go around, it's always fast In the corner to the Right was just moving and didn't gain the immediate confidence that I had with the McLaren and that's how it continues at incredible speed, but the brake pedal slightly softer and this movement under the brakes moves with the power.
Just restless. The more you go through the rope, the more active, the attention was paid to the car and it was quite different and I never really felt comfortable behind the wheel. I needed a lot of laps to try to learn the car as the McLaren went straight in. Although it is incredibly fast, yes, if we talk about performance, this car is faster than a Verel, I think it will be faster than the McLaren P1, it will drop in less than 10 seconds to 150 mph, you are in Chiron territory with that kind of performance. so we have run out of superlatives on how to describe the performance of this car and part of its secret is its light weight, it weighs 1277 kilos dry but 1389 kilos full of fuel weight D Evo weighs the Ferrari 296 dtb the car of the year 1690 kilos , so this car is 300 kilos lighter than a Ferrari 296 which obviously has the power from the battery, but this 750 has more torque than the Ferrari 296, although it is motor and electric, it has 800 Newton M of torque and you feel it in all times.
I can accelerate, you can leave it in Auto and you will be surprised by the power it has at 500 revs. I'm at 3000, now it makes low end torque. Yes, it's turbocharged and incredibly turbocharged to hit the numbers it does, but that torque is crucial. to how it moves down the road, combine that with light weight and the speed with which you come out of the corners with that wave of torque is incredible and then you get the impact of the horsepower as you approach 8,000 RPM , it is very addictive, it is exceptional. so yeah, in short, it's right at the top of dynamic play, it puts you in touch to maximize usage, you can get to whatever level you want, you can drive it like I do right now.
Cruis very good at that. but if you really want to go fast and you're on the track or something, you'll be surprised the first time you give it all this, it's really that fast and I like the look of this car, I didn't think I would like it. the appearance of the 720 was never a prisonFor me, this car in this color sitting outside my house everyone comments on it, I comment on it, it is a beautiful and slightly discreet car, I like how they have made the perforations in the back instead of showing the engine, the other thing, actually, when you look in the rearview mirror, what I'm looking at looks like looking in the rearview mirror of a Porsche 928 because of those kind of glass buttresses, marine buttresses, so yeah, obviously I've enjoyed it. my time with this car, I think it's interesting to compare it to the Ferrari again.
Ferrari is very good at tempting cars and then they offer V12s and then they make special editions, they have this aura that takes you towards the end. Garden Path to own several Ferraris because you want to keep them at the dealer in case you get a special addition and that sort of thing, but if you're buying a Raw car purely for capability, put a 296 next to a 750, I'd go with a 750 Because of its dynamic ability, it's a calm nature and the way I take advantage of it immediately as soon as I get behind the wheel somehow keeps things simple.
I don't want to use the word analog, but that's what the simplicity of the steering wheel, the magnificent controls, feels like. the easy paddles, no, none of those haptic controls, yes, another Goodwood point. I wanted to change the way I was doing the electric modes and have to activate that haptic control while you're completely Dar trying to make a turn into Good. Total nonsense. I wish they would throw it all away and go back to the proper controls of the 296. Those controls put me off behind the Ferrari Roma Pino and the 296. It's a shame and yet with this McLaren that has the traditional sticks, there is nothing in the steering wheel.
The Rocker paddles. It actually makes me want to buy this car, so I think there's a lesson there that sometimes new technology isn't always good, especially when it comes to the layout of controls that you just want to dial in anyway, enough of that. this we have another 700. 800 miles to get home I hope you enjoy this video of this road trip in this McLaren 750 if you did well keep watching keep subscribing more videos coming soon thanks for watching oh oh.
