There is some perfection. So I think there are also some

math

ematicians who were originally unimpressed by physical ideas. They might say, well, you know, there may be sort of... maybe... one or two areas where that would be appropriate, but not for my field, which is traditional. Then certainly coming off the field there were some physical ideas that proved to be very powerful and I feel like it's like a wave, you think it's not going to hurt you until it hits you, and suddenly you're underwater. We really have a crisis, and the crisis is that we both have wonderful theories that describe the world.

One of them is quantum theory: it is ideal for elementary particles. The other is relativity, which is used to describe the great structures of the universe, but the point is the collision of these two things, and they collide because they are great laws of

physics

. These include black holes and, perhaps most importantly, the Big Bang, where the rules of

physics

collapse. So it is very notable that the theory that is meant to describe reality may fail to solidify. And we believe that, in some sense, the only solution is to incorporate quantum mechanics. So we have to somehow combine these two images.

It is not enough to do quantum mechanics. It is not enough to do geometry. And we know that this happens because the universe is working, you know, at the moment we are talking, the laws of nature are working perfectly and there are no glitches anywhere. This means we have to find something deeper than engineering

ematics. What is it? This, this, I think, is a great secret. And we have some ideas for that, the idea might be engineering mathematics or something like thermodynamics, which is a theory that basically describes materials. So if I think about this table, it shows me that it is very powerful, but I know that it is a large collection of molecules.

I feel the air around me and I feel a certain temperature, but there is no such temperature. just molecules bouncing up and down, so that could be it. Just like this physical paper, if we zoom in, zoom in, zoom out and I will definitely see molecules, atoms, elementary particles, and there is no longer paper that can be that if I zoom in on the same space, do I ever see pixels? Do I see anything else? You know, we were thinking that maybe it's pure information, like zeroes. So, I find it absolutely impressive. Because if I were able to come up with a part of mathematics that was more fundamental than the mathematics of space and geometry, I think it would revolutionize all of mathematics.
