MASTERS DAY 1 RECAP ⛳️ Tiger shoots 1 under, DeChambeu leads the pack & Scheffler dazzles | SC

Apr 12, 2024
Mother Nature gave us a bit of a late start in the 2024 Masters open round this Thursday, but we played quite a bit of golf and the skipper saw some really good golf despite the conditions, accompanied by Andy North. I'm Michael Lees and we. We got about a half inch of rain, half an inch of rain overnight, the wind blew all day, but despite those conditions, Andy, we saw some really good scores, absolutely in those conditions, 20 mph winds, maybe with gusts of 30, swirling in these tall pines, we saw a 65 and a 6.6, 31 players under par now, some of them are still on the golf course, but overall it was amazing to play on a very, very difficult day and one of the players who recorded one of those low scores is world number one Scotty Sheffler, he scored a pair.

The wins here on 24 and the missed shot on 12 was just indicative of how well he played and this is a really tough bunker shot, it doesn't seem like if you land it on the FR it sticks and doesn't go anywhere. land a yard or two further and run 15 feet, don't expect you to hold it but that was amazing, then on the par five 13th got hit a little to the right, I got very lucky and it almost hung on the bank. he has an eagle shot on Easy up and in and this is maybe as good a shot as the one he threw all day, he hits it right on the hole, we see so many players go out a little to the right, use the slope, it's close , he's swinging, so Well, he's swinging well, he never left the flagpole and he smoothly

shoots

six under 66 and is one shot off the lead.

Rory M said these are some of the windiest conditions he's seen here in about six or seven years, but w under par and there's no hole that exemplifies that more than this short power three swirls in this area, we saw players with more than Pine St short in the water bunker, this is one of the best shots that creates a great birdie opportunity and he steps up, makes the putt, this is the first time he shot a round under par in the open round of the Masters in six years, but he was even par on the par five, which is uncharacteristic of Rory Maroy John ROM, the defending champion.

Champion here, uh one. overpar in his first round he had a little bit of everything a lot of birdies a lot of bogeys it wasn't exceptionally sharp but I think the win fooled him a few times and he didn't hold on to many more clearances on John ROM a little later which he did after H posted that over 73, but the round of the day belonged to Bryson Des Shambo. He came out a little earlier than some of the other players we just saw and he just took advantage of every scoring opportunity he saw and hit a ton of shots, hit 15 of 18 greens and if you do that at Augusta National on a day when the wind was blowing like today, it's really great to play here, use a slope on the 16th hole. close to the birdie hole, not only the lowest score I've ever recorded at the Masters, but also the lowest score for par in any round important of his career and here, on the 17th, it was a tremendous burn and this is a really difficult hole location.

To do any CS there is a lot of slope and it is difficult to judge the speed. He just rolls it right in the middle with five birdies as the last seven holes to finish the round, so a nice 65 for Bryson and Shambo, he's one shot away. lead as it is now and as Andy didn't even say before, there are still some players on the golf course to finish their first round will see coverage of the first round resume on 745 Eastern on ESPN in the morning as for the guys who they finished their rounds and sat on top of the leaderboard Bryson Des Shambo Scotty Sheffer what they said afterward based on how they played here today well it's always great to have a good start three in the first three holes to calm you down um I knew that It was going to be a tough day today with the wind and even tomorrow, so it takes a lot of patience on this golf course and, um, making sure you stroke it on your line, hit it with good iron shots and drive it well, I mean, to be able to win major championships you have to do it especially here you have to do everything right it's always nice to get around here bogey free I, you know, I did a good job being patient today, we kept the golf course in front of us and I mean, I executed some really nice ups and downs to keep the round going yeah it was overall it was a bogey free first round of Day Sheffer's career here at the Masters also what does he do?
Immediately afterwards he goes to the practice area. Well, he made a lot of really good swings. Rory did the exact same thing, trying to hone in on what was going right today. Ron with a little more practice and trying to work out some of the problems. Kings, yes, have some things to figure out, but got motivated after that 1-over 73 a little later at the Sports Center Tiger Woods, one of the players who couldn't complete his first round on Thursday, but had a really good result . start more on that when we get back to the Sports Center here at the Masters Tiger would take something in the 60s, yes, I would.
Woods in the Masters is always interesting, he has a minus, but his round is no more than 13 holes today means 23 tomorrow, we will return to Augusta Michael Lee's opening round of the 88th edition of the Masters began on Thursday; the full round was not finished due to Darkness patrons leaving the grounds under Dark Shadows, but they saw some pretty good golf and will return early Friday morning. Michael Le returns with Andy North and a lot of attention to Tiger Woods because the last time we saw him here he limped off the course with Drew on Saturday morning his ankle hurt, he had surgery, we saw him once in 20124 and he retired from that . but he walked into the first team with a bit of swagger in those shoulders and hips.
Andy, yeah, he looked like he was really ready to hit a beautiful little three on the first hole with this beautiful iron shot, perfect distance that he has. just pass the hole on a nice little flat spot, really a good way to start the day, what does it do? He rolls it up exactly how he drew it on the whiteboard in the blocking room before taking the field for the first time. burned the opening opening, it's been opening around here with the maestro since 1999, so that was a really good drive, let's go to the par 47, yeah, I hit it in the trees on the left and like all the players who hit it there, There is only one thing you have to do: play. low hook try running between the two big front bunkers if you cut it go into the bunker no big deal beautifully played bunker shot and this could be as good a pitch shot as you have hit in years this is in 11 water very, very dangerous just from left super spin, touch, he's quite proud of that walking in the 12 T and then in the 31 12 part he thought he had made a really good shot and ends up passing the green into the pine straw and you have to have a lot Be careful the pine straw there is very dangerous for your side, you can slide it across the green very easily, he left a six foot putt, but since he did it all day, coming in this week I was quite worried about how good it was.
It was going to be his short game. I rolled it here, beautiful, he picked it up and in five of the six games he missed, so Tiger one under through 13 holes has five holes left to finish his first round on Friday morning and then his second round will begin shortly after, but a little. context, what we saw in his game on Thursday reached seven fairways, seven greens and 13 holes. He has played both fairly. I mean, those are average numbers in terms of percentage, but look what he did on the greens, he didn't make a putt outside of 10 feet, but he was a perfect 13 of 13 inside that number one of only five players in the field without a miss from 10 feet and at the end of his round he spoke briefly to the media and they asked him about his body, he said it's there um and there's quite a bit of work to do starting tonight so with that being said, from From the moment he

leads

the golf course to the moment we see him finish five holes plus 18, what are we going to do?
What is Tiger Woods going through? Well, basically, he Now he himself will be in the process of receiving all kinds of rehabilitation, he will try to get some sleep. I guess if he's lucky enough to get three hours of sleep, he'll be up again at 3:00 in the afternoon. tomorrow to do the treatments before coming to the golf course, he will be at practice between 6:30 and 6:45 in the morning, then he will leave at 7:50 and then he will finish that round, hopefully, he will go down about . 9:15 or so he will have an hour to prepare for the second round.
I think it's a good time. I think you would like to have it a little shorter so it doesn't block at all. I'm sure he'll hit more balls and try to stay very relaxed and he'll go out and try to play a great second day. I'm going to put you in the mind of Tiger Woods, you know him. For a long time, how do you think he feels about the way he played despite everything he faced? I think he's probably pretty happy. I think we saw some smiles after he hit some shots, he hit a lot of really good Wings and greens that he missed. a lot of them were really good shots and the wind didn't take them or took them too much, so overall I think he's probably he's confident about what's going to happen.
I thought maybe one of the best things we saw from Tiger Woods was just the way he walked, he walked with confidence and didn't look like he was working on any aspect and we haven't seen much of that from Tiger in a while again, he said. resumes first round coverage 7:45 on ESPN second round coverage 3 East 12 Pacific on ESPN Tiger Woods one less in his first 133 holes
