Making Farmhouse Decor From Thrifted Finds || Trash to Treasure

Jun 05, 2021
Hi guys, welcome back to Ginger Chic Rehab, I'm Yvonne on my channel along with my husband Chris, we take second hand items and trade them for profit. We share the process of what we do with unwanted obsolete items and prepare them for resale in a retail store. booth so in today's video I'm sharing a process of how I make some signs and how I take some second hand items not only is it always furniture or bread boxes but sometimes it's just Addison and some of my signs and I have some tableware that I wanted to make and use some stamps on, so I thought I would share the process of what I do with these items.

You always need fillers in your booth and I like a variety of items to sell so you know there is always something unique you can do. come and see and then at the end of the video there is a jury box that I had made in a raid that had a chip in it and I shared it with people I knew how to fix it and with Starvon glue I will show you what to do to fix small chips so I picked up these two signs on one of my second-hand trips. I love quadrature. I know they're cabinet doors but they don't really look like cabinet doors and I know the Price 409 right now these thrift stores are a little pricey but I love that shape and then for 209 I love that this had that detail edge, yes, I could have Chris make a piece, cut a piece, but then he has to router the size and for 209 it's not worth the hassle if I can save it for such a low price and this huge tray was another inconvenience in a second hand video with me oh my god I love the size. and I loved that it was real wood and for the price of 5.99 I didn't think it was bad for the size of this beast.

More Interesting Facts About,

making farmhouse decor from thrifted finds trash to treasure...

I'm going to start right away by removing any of the price tags and prepping and getting these items ready. To paint, yes, there is always a little preparation with second-hand items. I don't see any reason to paint the back of the sign, it's perfectly one color. Yes, it's the natural wood, so I'm just going to tape the corners to the sides. this so I don't have tape left on the back so I can make even just a sign, I know it's just a sign, but let's keep our edges nice, but unfortunately with the two pieces of the cabinet door I'm not so lucky.
making farmhouse decor from thrifted finds trash to treasure
I guess someone thought they were going to paint it and then it was whatever they took them off and donated them so yeah these two were used as cabinet doors you can see where that handle was so what I'm doing now en I'm putting some tape on the back because yeah, it's a hole and I need to fill that hole so it doesn't. Yes, it's a cabinet door, but I don't want it to look like a cabinet door, so what am I doing? Now I'm just going to mix up some hard water putty just to fill those holes.
making farmhouse decor from thrifted finds trash to treasure
So why is sanding? I know someone had painted this white but it ended up with a rough texture. I wanted a little softness and I'm going to need this anyway for the hard and water putty. I'm just going to take my orbital sander and run it through and get those edges because I want to be able to distress this. I want to remove that white paint from those edges. and make it nice and smooth, so I'm going to take it to sand now that the Durham water putty is dry and I'm going to sand this smooth and then this tray has a little bit of top coat left on it so it's nice and smooth.
I'm going to use the orbital sander on this piece as well just to make sure it has an even texture and will accept the paint, so I did a little super cleaning in a bucket of water. I love it. be able to make a bucket full of hot water to clean my items so I'm going to distress these pieces so I'm going to paint a base coat of black and I'm going to start with the back of these cabinet doors. I want my backs to be as pretty as my front so I'm going to give the back of these cabinet doors a couple coats of this ready to go black onyx right off the shelf at Walmart and yes I know this It was already a white piece. made of wood, I could have just put a sign on it, but that's not the quality I was looking for.
There is only one look when you walk into our booth when we make parts and we want you to know you will get quality. So yeah, even though I sanded it and it was still white, I'm painting the base coat black on this piece too because I want to distress it so you can see some of that black when the finished product is ready and then Same with this tray, yeah, I could have just left it natural, but I don't think the camera is picking up that texture of the top layer that has chipped or worn away over time, it's just not a uniform color, so yeah.
I'm going to give the bottom of this a couple coats of black before I can work on the front, so it'll be one coat less and another coat to finish off some paint pieces. You know that first coat will never be enough, depending on the type of paint you use, more or less you will have to apply at least two coats, one is a good coat but both are even better, so now I go to my second coat to cover them. For the back of these doors, I know this is my final coat, so what I'm doing now is going in a couple different directions with my brush and then the final brush strokes need to be very light so I can get a smooth finish and pleasant.
I finish and yes, I do the same technique although it is not your final coat for the tray and for this other sign, after I have put all the paint on, I go in a couple different directions. I'm really trying to get those brush strokes. so that you have a nice smooth finish, the lighter the touch, the more those brush strokes will be eliminated. If you look at the back of the doors on these cabinets you can't even see any brush strokes so I achieved my goal of taking the time to take that brush in a couple different directions and now what I'm doing here is sealing that black paint flat with a little polyacrylic.
This is a nice top coat. I know it's the back of the pieces, but no. I want them when you paint the matte black, it acts like a chalk paint, so I just need to seal that and then I'll do the same thing on the bottom of this tray. I'm going to seal that. that just protects it and helps with longevity. I'm not going to paint it. This will be the final layer at the bottom of this tray. I know I understand if you fast forward through the boring part of painting, but for me, each of the steps is important to achieve the look I'm going for, so now I'm going to paint the front of these cabinet doors and that tray , I am now taping the back of this cabinet door.
I'm going to leave one black but then I'm going to paint the other white. Why not? I have two identical ones. Not me. Why not make one black and one white? So I'm just using the matte paint and the primer in one and a matte white and again, this is available at Walmart and it will take one, two, and three coats to cover the front of this cabinet door and this sign. wood. I'm going to do the same. I will use the primer that kills the paint. I also want to turn this into a white sign and for this tray I taped the bottom of the tray to the corners and then I'm going to paint this white too, oh my gosh, I love this size, this beast of a tray.
So now I'm with the second coat in that pan and you can really tell where that first coat is really a good primer, a good base coat, you can really tell how it covers up with that second coat. I love this painting that kills. and primer after I've gotten all my coats of white paint to cover them, I'm going to use 220 sandpaper and that's why I painted them black. I want to see some of that visible black. I like the distressing look. like the look of a distressed wood, what I'm doing is taking that 220 sandpaper and pressing hard on those sharp edges and then that will allow some of that black show to come out, if I wanted to press even harder I could make some of it of the wood looks and then I just give it a light touch on the rest of the piece to make sure it's nice and smooth and then I'll turn it over, remove that tape and then I'll take that 220 sandpaper in where it built up the tape and it made a crusty edge and then where the previous owner had painted it got slapped, that's why I like the tape, I'll go ahead and try to get it. a lot of that and hopefully since it was raw wood I should be able to sand it and then I'm doing the same thing with the cabinet door which I painted white, I left the back black and especially that's why I needed polyacrylic from that So I just didn't leave it like a blackboard with all my handprints on it.
Here's why I paid 409 for these cabinet doors. All edges. All the details. I love those little buttons. I loved all the details and the sharp edges on this piece. When I went in to wear it down, I knew that, my goodness, it wouldn't look like a cabin door anymore. It would make a beautiful frame for a sign, so I coated it with polyacrylic. in front of this black cabinet door as well and now I'm going to go in and do the same thing. I'm taking 220 sandpaper on those sharp edges to show all those beautiful details on this piece, then I switch to some fine grit steel wool and then smooth the rest of the piece, if I did it with the 220 sandpaper , it would probably remove too much paint, so yeah, I'm going to sand the edges of this beast of a tray and make it all smooth, hey, no.
It doesn't need a lot of details, it's a beast of a tray, so now I'm going to my silhouette and if you follow my channel You'll know I have a silhouette and a cricut, but I tend to find more design options in the silhouette. design store that I find on Cricut, this is one of the designs that I found. I found and am first

making

the simple wood piece and had the idea that I wanted the family word to fit almost the entire piece. wooden so this one fits perfectly with what my vision was so I haven't figured out in cricket yet how to take things apart to use them so I can still do that on my silhouette so I just wanted That family wanted to add those to it words.
I'm using this font and then I'll be able to achieve the sign I want, so after I add the words and add that family, I need to group it all together and resize it. It's because of the size of my piece of wood, so when it comes to

making

signs, I don't necessarily stick with what's trendy. I'll stick with what I would put in my house. I always say: do what you love and if you would put it. in your house, I hope other people like it too, so the simple word blessed is all I imagined for those cabinet doors and I'm going to make two blessed ones, one in white and one in black, the same thing.
I found a silhouette design. design store that I liked, I took it, I took the leaves off, I wanted to fill all that blessed, I love the squiggle of all these letters and that they are already soldered together and then I can duplicate them and make two of them. and then I went in and imagined the inside of that tray, that's why the tray is here in sign making. I just wanted to put the old

farmhouse

at the bottom of that tray. You can use it as a

decor

ation piece. It's so you can see the sign or you can use it to put things on.
As soon as I saw this I absolutely imagined I could make it as one of my big signs and do the old

farmhouse

at the bottom when I was resizing. this farm word, when you're sizing it and stretching it, you want to make sure you don't stretch the letters too much, you don't want them to look warped and not nice, so now I'm just going to go with a simple font to make the word the and the word ode and then I have a lot of luck using this Oracle vinyl that I get from amazon. I love using it for my templates.
I have good luck with clean lines and Usually if I was making a black piece I would cut it into white, but for a while I just cut them both into one black piece, so now I'm here soldering and removing those extra letters that I do not do. It's not necessary and leave the template behind and who doesn't get nervous when a piece like that little piece of e comes off and now I have to go into what I just took out and hope it doesn't get ruined because I hate when I have to do that.
I did cut some out, but luckily I found my little piece of e, then I like to go back in and leave about a half inch gap. I don't want to try to put too much of that vinyl on my piece of wood. I'm going to place the template, so I go and cut off the excess like that. It just makes a nice little package to put my transfer tape in and it's a little less to have to work with so you can see. here, where the white paper would have been a slightly better choice because it's black on black, but I can really tell and I've almost cut it to fit the explosion, to cut it to fit this space anyway, but I'm still kind of making sure it's centered using my ruler and then using my little scraper tool to get it applied nicely, so I'm just going to use the apple barrel paint in white and a makeup sponge that I buy at the dollar store .
What I am doing here is that viewers suggested me a long time ago and I have been doing this in thethat any element painted like this is white. I'm going to make my first layer white and that really helps. you get clean, crisp lines, but unfortunately for the black piece because I'm polyacrylic, it doesn't work the same way when I do it. It has come off when I take out the vinyl so I'm just going to Put White on that piece, it all works differently for everyone else but I love it on my white pieces like this and now I'll move on to the all-purpose apple barrel in black. and the same technique is the makeup sponge and you just put a little bit of paint on it, it's better to go over it several times than to apply a bunch of paint and I will tell you that I use the existence of a heated hair dryer to help. dry between coats if you're enjoying this type of content and you're not part of my YouTube family yet, consider hitting the subscribe button so now it's time to remove the vinyl and I like to heat it up with my swipe. dryer, it just helps release the stickiness and then the chances of it removing all that old stuff, all that time I spent painting these pieces, I didn't want to have that tape, this vinyl would take away my paint job too many times if I had that.
This happens so I always use the heat from a hair dryer to help release this and it just works. It's a little warm on the fingers but it stretches so I need to seal this all purpose white paint and I'm just going to I'll be using some acrylic spray this crystal clear brand from Krylon this is my second one I can't tell you which a little goes a long way and I'm going to wax it with hesitation and if I just put the Waverly wax just over the stencil with this paint, it would just erase most of it and I want it to stay sharp like this and it has a little bit of a shine to it so I'm just taking a really old piece.
I used a lot of 220 sandpaper and just lightly went over it and I did it because I had everything, I had the spray and I had all the pieces. I ended up spraying them all, including that tray, although I said waverly wax before, when I'm at home I'm using this folk art, it's exactly the same as the waverly antique mix. I asked a viewer to send it to me and it's in my craft room so I'm at home right now so this is what I'm using and this, like I said, works just as well as the Waverly aged wax and it What I'm doing is I'm just taking that bright white and blending it just a little bit so the whole thing is nice and antique, I love what this antique wax does to this black paint and just removing that crisp whiteness from the stencil and then to my white items, I am just using a very fine finishing wax on the natural just to seal and protect.
That white paint is just more protection, so can I take a moment before I move on to my next DIY and thank my top commenters, my top viewers without the love of you and support everyone who comments and gives me a thumbs up well why do you like this video? This channel wouldn't be possible, so I think these were supposed to be my top five, but I have six that have been consistently with me almost from the beginning, so I wanted to give them a shout out and I hope they're doing well. I took a screenshot of your photo, but I appreciate you all for my project number two.
If you follow my channel and my savings with me and see my house tours, you will know that I love dishes and I don't know what these little containers are. all the time and I've bought some and then I bought this one the other day for 409. I love it, it's the same color as some dinnerware and I'm excited to put some info on if anyone knows what they were used for. I guess they were some kind of jam, maybe unfortunately they don't have words, but wait, I'm going to make them have some words, so the first thing I'll do of course is make them pretty. and clean and some of them still have some tags on them and that kind of bottom that tag doesn't come off easily so I'm just putting some hot, soapy dish soap on them.
Well I've used these stamps and a couple of my tins that I had done some Christmas arrangements and isn't it funny how I thought about using them on them and then the other day I thought I have all these little pots why don't I turn them into marbled jars, so I'm super? I'm excited to finish this project and share it with you, so I ordered them from painted heirloom dot com. There were 24 for the whole package, but now that I find other uses for them, I know they are worth the money, so when I made them into my cans.
For my Christmas I didn't have a stamping block so I finally went to the hobby lobby and used a 40 off coupon and for six dollars and then I bought this large ink pad on Amazon and then I'm going to use some isopropyl alcohol. Make sure you have that area nice and clean even though I washed it and then to seal it because the ink will not be permanent, it will rub off. I'm going to use a little bit of this acrylic spray that I used. before, so now I'm just centering my first stamp. I love these types of stamping blocks because they have a grid pattern and then I choose my design like I said.
I'm going to clean the area. I want to make sure that I have a good prep even though I've cleaned it, I'm just going to take some isopropyl alcohol and make sure the surface is nice and clean and then I'm just going to take my stamp and I'm going to press it, make sure that get it nice and inky and then really evaluate, how am I going to make a round object? Well, the first one didn't work, but I knew this ink wasn't going to be permanent on these. and I knew it would clean right off with a little alcohol so I'll figure it out so what I had to do with my first stamp was trying to start in the middle and then move it to each side.
No, that's not what I need to do. I need to start on one side and then turn it to the other side applying the same pressure all the time. There we go, we did better the second time. Have they all been stampers? Are you familiar? With stamping, I used to make stamps on cards and scrapbooks, so I'm not new to stamps, but these are big beasts and you were usually stamping on paper that you didn't have a chance to erase. You had the opportunity. to flip the paper over and use the other side, but you didn't get a chance to clean it up, so for this one, I was like, "Oh man, I didn't have enough pressure on that stamp at the top, but it's okay." I can wipe this one off and, like, oh man, this one creaked on the outside edges and creaked, so some of that ink is there forever.
Damn, it's all a different material than the others, but it is what it is and I'll seal it again. anyway I'm going to use some of this acrylic sealant to make them stay there permanently now that I have them the way I want them I'm going to take them outside like I said this stuff stinks really bad but it dries in a matter of minutes so I don't know what You see everyone when you see this as I sign. I don't see this as a cabinet door at all, just the shape when they are square like that, those little buttons, I just see this as a beautiful blessed sign just a nice simple word is all I needed and for this tray I didn't need any details It's a beast and that's its detail it's a big beautiful tray and I can't imagine anything but the old farmhouse sitting on it like in your wording I just love it it didn't really bother me I wanted to keep that nice and dark now I don't many sides of writing, I don't do a lot of this type of grouping of words.
I think Hobby Dobby makes a lot of them so I stay away from them, but there was something about this piece of wood that just screamed that it had to be what it is and I can totally imagine putting this next to a wall of photos. and you already knew what this one was going to say but why didn't I have two of the same why make one in black and one in white and I'll tell you at my stand that it's a 50 50. both are sold for me alone Also, and yes, I put hangers on the back of each of these so they are ready to use, so no, these may not be the original jam jars that I posted on Instagram, but I am very happy with how they turned out, yes. one has to be imperfect, it's just that in the past they were probably imperfect, but I love these and I really made them to resell, but oh, as I see them all grouped together, oh no, I hope I'm strong willed. that I can resell them and not leave them in my own house and as I promised many of my viewers who asked me how I fixed these chips, I'm sorry that it's taking me so long to figure out how to add them video, so why not just add it to the end of this video and time stamp so this is just a chip?
I do not plan to resell this piece. I'll keep it to myself and only use it as a star link. The ca glues are wonderful, although the three pack comes with a thin one, a medium one and a thick one, so for this, since it is not as liquid, the thick one is not liquid. I'm going to put it in a little bit at a time and build it up and yeah, actually with the thick, if you wanted you could take a little toothpick and a little bit of paint, if you wanted to try to match it into a color and add it, you'd have to do it right there and that I love it. you add a little bit of that glue and then the accelerator for 15 seconds and then it dries and then I can build it up.
I just can't say enough about this product on the days I held a super glue in place for hours and didn't have it stuck, don't worry and I'll put this in my link. I think it costs like forty dollars for the entire game, but it's worth it and it's solved a lot of things for me. What I'm showing you is the end of this. The ray finished piece isn't perfect either so that's fine, I prefer to fill that mark on that chip so that when I put it on my furniture I don't scratch it, so Now right after I finish it I take some 220 sandpaper and just sand it I'm sanding nice and smooth.
Yes, Ca glue is completely sandable. I have even used this product in woodworking. I can't recommend this product enough. Yes, it was something in me. At first I visited my husband's workshop and then this company contacted us and I said yes we use it all the time so I will totally recommend it to everyone so thank you very much for watching today's video and what they made? Think about my signs, taking second hand items and making signs. I love that big tray with just one word. Sometimes a sign, just a simple word is enough and along with those, oh my god, I'm so happy I'll probably never find a real one. marble a jar in my area, they're probably not native to my area, but once I saw those stamps and finally thought why do I keep seeing these little cookie jars everywhere, why don't I do that, I finally made it and got A Sometimes it's just done you need that motivation that pushes you to finish something and what did you think of my little flip chip?
Fix my little chip. Now you can add some paint like I told you and get a perfect combination. Since I wasn't reselling this item, I just wanted to make sure I fixed that chip so it wouldn't scratch my furniture, so thank you so much for watching today's video and if you're part of my YouTube family, thank you so much.
