What do I have to do for you today? Oh my God. St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner. Dollar Tree has some really fun decorative wall

plaque

s that they are carrying right now and I have to be honest with you because some of them are really fun and might be cute to some people. They're just not my decorating style, they're not me, they're not something I would buy to put in my house because they just don't fit my decor and that's why I really like the idea of some of them, like

this

elf. fun idea, I personally don't do glitter, I don't like it, it's messy, it gets everywhere no thanks, but I really like the idea of

this

and when I saw this I knew I could turn it into something like this.

Stinking cute, give it that rustic farmhouse feel even though it's st. St. Patrick's Day is something that would fit very easily into my decor and I would like it, so when it comes to pieces like this, I like to show you how, when you see them, you can walk past them and think yeah, that It's cute, but it's not me. I'm not going to understand it, you might want to reconsider because you could transform it into something with just a little DIY and that's

what

we're going to do today, so let's not waste any more time and show you

what

I have in mind this decorative elf wall

plaque

from the Dollar Tree.

Okay, let's start with this

transformation

. I can't wait for you to see the result. I'm going to start by taking this piece apart and I'll do it by simply flipping it over. Now, because I'm going to cover these pieces, I'm going to give them a nice thick base coat of Mod Podge. I'm not worried about removing the glitter or sanding it. because that's going to make shine everywhere and I'm going to find shine for months, so I'm going to go over it with the Mod Podge. You just want to make sure you're generous with it, so I'm going to dip into some of those pieces of felt I had left over from Christmas and cover them with black felt.

Once I've placed it on top of the Mod Podge, I'm going to go back in with a second coat of Mod Podge and you really want to do that because it will actually adhere the felt better to the board, where if you just apply the base coat and put the felt on top, you'll find that your fabric felt like your burlap, whatever you're adhering to, a plaque will come off over time, so I'm going to do that with both pieces. I will also cover them with burlap and a lot of times if you use a felt under the burlap it really helps so you can't see through the burlap so the burlap I'm using today is a hunter green burlap that I bought from Hobby Lobby Hobby Lobby always has their burlap that the garden sells is on sale for 239 which is a great buy it comes in various colors as you can see so I thought by purchasing the colored burlap it would save me time painting and the Burlap at Hobby Lobby is a tighter weave. burlap than what you would get at Dollar Tree and I know a lot of you have been saying that your Dollar Tree hasn't had burlap in a long time and that's why I bring you more budget friendly DIYs that use some Non Dollar Tree Items I thought for 2 :39 per yard this burlap is an excellent purchase.
You will get more than you would at Dollar Tree in that little package they give you and this will open up endless possibilities for DIY and such, while it was on sale for 239 I went ahead and I mean I bought a yard of each color, now that's not It's something everyone should do, they can buy just a quarter yard and You're not going to be the 239 4, you're going to pay a lot less, but since I bring you so many DIYs, I thought it would be 2:39 per yard. I'm going to stock up on this so I have it on hand and so I'm going to leave my Gabon, let's get back to DIY and you can see I placed a small piece of burlap over the black felt.
Now I want to explain, some of you may be wondering why they put the felt down if they're just. I'm going to put the burlap on it because I didn't want to see through the burlap we would have seen the shine and all the colors that the plate originally had and then covering it with felt or even painting it if you really wanted will solve that. problem for the hat. I'll cover it with the black burlap I picked up as well and again once you put the burlap on. I don't know if I said this before, you'll want to

look

for a third layer. of Mod Podge, so if you don't have a jar I suggest you get one, you can get it at Michael's or Joanne's, you can use a 50% off coupon and you will pay less than five

dollar

s for a big bottle of Mod.
A container like this It goes a lot further than the smaller bottles from the Dollar Tree, but if all you can get are the ones from the Dollar Tree it will work, you'll probably use a full bottle or two for this DIY. For the middle plate of this elf I decided to use beige burlap and to do it again I'm going to use Mod Podge. I'm going to use this beige brown felt and the burlap I'm using for this is this. burlap roll that you can get at Walmart, you can buy it at Hobby Lobby, but since I already had this roll on hand I decided to use it and not buy more than I needed at Hobby Lobby.
This is a pretty good size roll that you will get for 597 and will be a great help to those of you who are new to my channel. I like to put a lot of my DIYs that fit in my oven in the oven to speed up the drawing process, I'm sure they could. I use a hair dryer and a heat gun, but you have to sit there and hold it over your project and wave it back and forth, and that's not something I have time to do because usually when I do my DIY jobs I do five or six at a time and it's a full day of filming, so to keep myself moving throughout the day and not waste time holding a dryer to dry, I put my clothes in the oven, set it to lower temperature. which will go, which would be 135 degrees in my case and a project like this using Mod Podge instead of the Mod Podge taking a few hours to dry, it will take maybe 15 or 20 minutes and when it's ready to come Back to this, I can move on instead of waiting a few hours once my three pieces are nice and dry, the fabric is hardened and really stuck to the plate and then using this razor blade, I'm going to cut off all that extra felt. burlap now, if you don't feel comfortable using a razor blade like this, you can use an exact knife.
I just find that the blades of an exact knife don't really cut thicker fabrics and that the blade is a little flimsier than the blades. that come with these safety cutters and since I'm comfortable using this, I prefer this method: scissors. I have found in my experience that you can't get close enough to the plate, you don't get a nice clean cut, so I would definitely stay. with some type of blade, whether it's a safety cutter like this one or an Exacto knife for most details. I'll use puppy paint for his shoes. I'll use this puffy black paint that I bought at Walmart.
You can get this puppy paint at almost any craft store, but I will tell you that Walmart has it. I think it is the cheapest for this larger bottle. I think I paid 347 which is a great purchase. This is very useful. It's something that gets used a lot during the Christmas season, it's easy to work with and I like adding different textures to my crafts because I feel like it adds a little more character, makes it a little more fun and the puffy paint

look

s really brilliant. when it dries look how cool that puffy paint looks right against the burlap it just adds an element of character I love using a little gold puffy paint.
I'm going to draw some buckles for the top of the shoes. I'll also add three stripes to the stockings with the gold and while I'm at it, since I took out the gold, I'll use this for the ribbon at the top of the hat for the center plate, it just looks too clean for me so using a black ink pad, I'm going to run it along the outside edges of this plate just to distress it, age it, and give it a little bit of dimension. I'll also use these Wooden Letters from Crafter Square that carry the

dollar

tree

s.
I love this new font. If you don't have these wooden letters, many of the dollar

tree

s carry those stick-on signs and have a black font that would work perfect for this. and since I'm Irish I thought it would be cool to change it up a little and put the word Irish in the center of this plate now because this letter pack only comes with one letter each. I needed two eyes for Irish, so I'm going to remove the bottom of this letter F so I can still use the F and I'm going to place this little round wooden tab on the top of this eye.
Actually, I think it was an L, but now I'm going to Keep an eye on it. I'm going to hot glue it on and just put some black paint on it and you won't realize this was never an eye to begin with. It was still too clean for me. taste, so I decided to go back with an ink pad and a stiffer brush and just add more distressing for the next step. I'll also use some of these wooden dowels from the Dollar Tree, which you can usually find in the craft section and many times you can also find them at kids' crafts, where all the beads are.
I know at my Dollar Tree there are two different sections, so there's one that's more geared toward crafts for adults and then where the toys are, there's a ton of fun for kids. craft items and I usually find them there. I painted four of them black. I'm hot gluing two of them together centering them in the middle on either side of the center plate, if that makes any sense. I'm doing this because I wanted to. This elf stood upright and I didn't want to hang it so I thought using a peg would make it a more rigid and sturdy piece because it couldn't stand up if it had ribbon and this was the perfect way to do it once I have those centerpieces, I'll go in and reinforce each side of the pegs with a little hot glue, then I'll just place the top hat on top, the links on the bottom and Again, using hot glue, glue these together, the pegs They alone aren't enough to keep this piece standing, so I'm going to take four of the wooden blocks from the Dollar Tree and hot glue them to the bottom of the shoes here. like this, and I'm going to make it two blocks thick, which is a total of four blocks, and this will make it not fall backwards, it won't fall forwards, it will just stand up perfectly when I was at the Dollar Tree I wasn't very happy with none of the shamrocks they had to decorate the hat with and since I do a lot of paper crafts I went to Michael's.
I like to use cupcake toppers as toppers, they are the perfect topper you can see. Lo and behold, this was the perfect shamrock for the top of this hat. These work perfectly because you can easily remove them with a toothpick and you are left with a double-sided ornament. These are very affordable and economical and you get a lot more bang for your buck buying the cupcake toppers than buying stickers now to finish this off I'm going to go ahead and stamp it with my homemade with love stamp which I'm now going to put on the back of all my DIYs.
I'm going to sign and date it so the kids know when I made this. I know, I always say this, but I really love how this piece turned out with just a little DIY. I took the st. St. Patrick's Day plaque that was bright and vibrant and gave it a rustic feel that would match my home decor. I'm happy with the outcome of this. I think it was a really fun piece to transform and it is definitely a piece that I am going to save and preserve for years to come one that I will post every year.
