Let's Create a Double Zipper Pouch-Easy Method with No Dent Zipper Sides

Jun 02, 2021
Hi everyone, I'm Rosie and today I'm going to show you a simple

method

to make a

double

zipper

bag without

dent

s on the

sides

, so let's get started first, talk about what you'll need for the project and then we'll move on. to talk about measurements, you will need some outer fabric and I am using 100% cotton quilting fabric, you will need lining fabric, you will need woven interfacing. I've connected everything with some SF 101, the Pellon SF 101. I need a

zipper

for each bag. I'm using 7 inch zippers here. You will need some all-purpose sewing thread. You will need a D-ring with a swivel hook.

You will need outer fabric for your little doll. A little check and You will need a two and a half inch diameter circle to make my circle. I just used a simple punch. I think this one is stamping, but you can get them anywhere if you don't have a punch you can use. Go online and print a two and a half inch circle, just make sure you set your printer to print that circle at 100% and make sure you measure the diameter of the circle before using it, so let's talk measurements next. I'm just going to make a very simple bag here, there's nothing fancy.

The main goal of the video is to show you the simple

method

I use to build it. I'll also show you how to attach the zippers without

dent

ing the

sides

. Now to determine the width of the bag, I'm just going to take the zipper and I'm going to measure it from edge to edge and it's about eight and three quarter inches long, so that's the exact length I want my bag to be. so from here to here the width is eight and three quarters. I'm not going to do zipper tabs or anything like that, we're just making a very basic bag and then for the height of the bag, I want it to be six inches, from here to here is six inches, so you're basically cutting out a square or a rectangle eight and three quarters wide by six inches tall and you will need to cut four outer pieces and to line the pieces, then I took each piece of fabric and cut a piece of pellon s f-101 the same size of 8 and 3/4 by 6 inches tall and I fused them according to the manufacturer's instructions and then took my two and a half inch circle. and I just put it up to the corners and traced with my pen and cut it to get a nice rounded edge and then for the wrist strap I needed to cut two pieces, each piece is three inches wide, this piece right here will hold the ring on D, it's three inches, I think about six inches, it's longer than we need, but that's okay, and then for the actual wrist strap, I made that piece three inches wide by about 15 inches and you can certainly make your wrist strap longer or shorter, that really is a personal preference first, we will start by sewing the zippers on the inside sides of the bag and what I mean by this is that here is the bag that I made previously, this it's the inside side okay these are the sides that are going to be sewn together and we're going to touch each other so on one side of the bag we want the zipper post to be on the left side and on the other bag we want the zipper pull is on the right side that way.

When you sew them together like this, the zipper posts will both be on the left side, so I'm going to remove these pieces right here and now we're going to sew the zipper on this side if I put the zipper tape on. Right up to the edge here I'm going to have a very thin seam and I really don't like to have a very thin seam when I put the zipper on, so what I really like to do is draw a quarter line. about an inch down from the top I didn't mention in your supplies that you need some kind of marker.

I'm using a marker pen here and it's just for demonstration purposes. I do not recommend using a marker on any part of your project. Marks can come back in the cold, while they go away in the heat, they can come back in the cold, so now this is where I'm going to align my zipper. I'm going to take the zipper and I'm going to align it. The edge of the zipper is taped up with the line that I just drew like this and I'm going to secure it there with a few groovy clips and then I'm going to go to the sewing machine and sew this, here's the zipper.
The tape trimmed on my zipper is growing up to the line I drew a quarter inch down from the top. Now you can use Wonder Clips, pins, tape, whatever you want to secure the zipper for sewing, it's your personal preference so use whatever you like. I feel comfortable and on the back I have the zipper tape sticking out just a little bit on each side, so if the zipper tape is a little bigger than what you cut, just make sure it's even on each end. on a Q from Duke et al 2010 and I'm using a stitch length of 2.5.
I have an arrow foot here. You can use a zipper foot or whatever you have that works with your zipper. I'm probably sewing somewhere between an eighth of an inch and a quarter of an inch from the edge of the zipper tape and it doesn't really matter how far you go, you just need to get the presser foot past the teeth of the zipper and you need to be consistent. With each side of the zipper that you sew, you can also see that I started with the zipper going down a little bit and now that I'm getting closer to the zipper post, I'm just going to zip it up and then be done. sewing and you can backstitch on both ends.
Now I'm going to take the lining and sew it on the opposite side of the zipper, so you want to put everything together, the lining on the outside with this zipper sandwiched in between and pin everything together. place where you want to make sure all the edges are even, so the top edge should be even, the sides, the bottom, everything should be even, so now we're going to go to the sewing machine. I will continue the same. seam line I sewed earlier. I'm about to sew the previous seam line. I'm going to topstitch both ends. My zipper pull is now at this end, so when I get here I'll have to open it.
Alright? Now I'm getting close to my zipper post, I'm just going to open it up. You have to lift the presser foot, grab the post and pull it to make sure the edges stay even and now that's it's done. What I'm going to do is fold the sides inside out and I want to press everything down really good and then we're going to run a top stitch along this edge right here, now I have the outside and the lining sewn on both sides of the zipper. so I want to do some top stitching right along the folded edge.
One thing that will help you avoid having those dented sides from the zipper is that you want to make sure there is no extra bulk in the seam allowance. here we will be sewing this with a 3/8 inch seam allowance so you don't want to have any bulk here if you are using heavy interfacing just keep it out of your seam allowances the other thing is when you are doing the sewing top stitch, you don't want to top stitch all the way, that will

create

extra bulk, so we're just going to sew between the top of the zipper pull and the bottom of the zipper stop and you also want to sew the top seam as close as possible. as close as possible to the fold.
I'm going to sew my top seam with a stitch length of 3.0 and we're going to go back and forth, so now when we take a look at this, we'll see that where I sew the top I have some extra volume because of the way I now the fabric is held in place with that top seam, but here I have a flat seam allowance and that's where we're going to be. sewing our 3/8 inch seam and we won't have this extra bulk because of the top seam there. Now we have the zipper sewn into one side of the bag with the exterior and lining sewn together.
You can see how. As far as I got with my top seam, I just went from the top of the zipper post to the bottom of the zipper stop right down here, now we're going to do the exact same thing on the other side of the bag, but remember that your zipper post should go to the right side on this side of the bag the zipper pull is facing left and on this side of the bag the zipper pole will be facing right so go ahead and pin , make sure you draw that. align it down 1/4 inch from the top like we did before and then you're going to place the zipper tape right on this line that you just drew and then you're going to do everything exactly the same way you did it for On this side I have the fully sewn zippers on both sides with the linings and the next step will be to place these two bags right sides together so the outside sides are together and when we do that you will see that the zipper poles are both on the left now we want to take half of the project here.
I'm going to open it like this and on the outside, so this is my outside. Here you want to mark two inches from each edge and then I'm going to market about two and a half inches above this line here, so now we have a box and we want to take the other half of the project and we're going to join them right sides together to hold them together. . together you want to open the zippers halfway and then we're going to take the two sides and put the right outside sides together and these parts are very important, you want to make sure that the folded top edge on this side is perfectly level with the folded top edge on this side so you can put them together and cut them out.
If you want to be a little more secure, you can put a pin right there and that will really ensure that those sides stay together. then you will do the same on this side, now your seams should be down, well away from the lining and the zipper tape will be facing up, so towards the lining the top of the zipper tape should also be even to that You're going to trim it or pin it and then you're going to want to trim all of these edges here, you're going to want to make sure that all the edges are even when you're trimming and then when you're done with the trimming or pinning, you're going to be I'm going to run this over to the sewing machine and You are going to sew around this box twice with a short stitch length.
I've gone back to the regular presser foot on my sewing machine and am going to sew around the box. I will use a stitch length between 2.0 and 2.5. I just want to stay in the line when you get to the corner. Now you will spin if you stray a little bit in this part of the project, it's not the biggest problem in the The world spins again and now we'll sew around it one more time and then move on to the next step. I have sewn around the box and the outside sides are facing each other and now I want to take my piece and just arrange it. to fold it in half a little bit and start making a cut here and then I'm just going to cut towards each side that you want to be on, you know, a quarter or a half inch away from the stitched line, it's not like that. really matters a lot and then I'm going to trim in the corners, you just don't want to go through the seams and you don't have to be exactly level with the seams for this, just close it up and then I'm going to trim the excess here and I'll leave about a quarter half an inch from a scene so I finished trimming all four sides there and then you're going to go to your iron and you're going to want to press all of these open and I would press on both sides to press the seam open on this side and then flip it over and Press the seam open on the other side.
Now that I've got those seams open, I'm going to check my fraying and I'm going to put a good amount of fray control in each corner here and you're going to do it on both sides, okay, so after it dries a little bit, you're going to give it the turn and you will do it on the other side and then after the fraying has been checked. on both sides and all the corners and everything is dry enough, which mine isn't, but that's okay, you're going to take one side of the bag and push it through that window.
It's a lot like making a zipper window for the inside of a bag. When you want to make a little pocket inside the bag, that's fine, and after you've got everything ready, you're going to go to your iron again and iron this window nice and flat, that's what it should look like. now you have your exterior with the window and you have your lining with the zipper sewn in the middle you will have the exact same thing on this side and now we are ready to start sewing on the other side of the bag. I have another exterior. piece right here and this piece is going to be sewn on the opposite side of the zipper on this side, so we're going to place the right side of the fabric on the right side of the zipper.
The right side of the zipper is always the side with the zipper post, you will pin whatever, but before you do that, you will mark that line 1/4 inch down from the top and now that I have it marked, I can pin this outside on the opposite side of the zipper and when you do that you're going to want to make sure that the edges are even, so you want the edge of this part right here, the part with the window, to be even with the edge of the outer piece you are sewing and you again. You want the zipper tape to stick to the line you drew, so go ahead and cut it into place and then you'll sew it on the same way you did the other sides.
Now I'm ready to sew the other oneabroad. piece to the opposite side of the zipper and I'll do it exactly the way we've been doing it the whole time and I'll use a 2.5 stitch length and when you get to the zipper post you'll just lift up and open the pull-up and then you can finish sew all the way and now you're going to go ahead and take the other piece of the lining and sew it to the opposite side of the zipper. Here, now that we've sewn it, we can put the lining on the other side of the zipper and sew it back on.
When you cut, just make sure all the edges are even and then you're off to the sewing machine. and just follow your previous stitching line and I'm going to do that right now off camera. I have the lining sewn on the opposite side of the zipper and I did the top seam and did all that off camera. So now I want to show you what you should have, so let's turn this over and what you should have is a lining piece here, then an exterior with the zipper sewn on here, then you have the exterior piece with the window, you turn it over and you have the second outer piece with the window, you have the zipper sewn here, then you have a lining piece and here is another lining piece, so now what we need to do is sew another outer piece on the opposite side of the zipper, here same. and I have an outside and I've already drawn a line a quarter inch down from the top, so I'm going to zip the right sides together and attach my zipper to that piece with the zipper tape splicing to the right. to that line and we're going to do it exactly the way we've been doing it all along, so you need to trim it out and then you're going to go to the sewing machine and you're going to sew it up, now the outside is sewn up. the zipper, so here's the outside piece that I just sewed on the opposite side of the zipper and the last thing we need to do is take the last piece of lining and sew it to the other side of the outside, so we'll trim it out. all together and then we're going to sew along the previous line and, as always, make sure that all the edges are, not only the top edges, but also the side edges, and this will be this piece of lining that here should be The last piece you have to sew, so I'll do it off camera and then when I'm done sewing it, I'll press everything into place and do the top seam.
Now the last side of the lining is sewn into place and You might be thinking now that this looks like a mess and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it, so what I want you to do is turn it over and I want you to pick up next to the window. so on the left you will have the two outer pieces that were sewn together with the window cut out and then you can see that this piece with the window and this other outer one right here, the zipper sewn between those two, so those two sides go together and then what you will have is the linings on the opposite side with the zipper sewn between those two sides they go together, then you will flip it over and again you will have the outside with the window with the zipper sewn on. between these two sides they go together and then you'll have the two liners here, those sides go together, but for now we're going to put this aside because what we need to do is make the little tab that will hold the D ring to make the tab of the D ring, you want to take the piece that was three inches wide by about six inches, the six inches is much longer than what we need, but don't worry about that right now, what you want to do is fold it in half and press it, then you're going to open it up and fold one long edge on that line that you just pressed right in the middle and you're going to press it again and then you're going to take the opposite side. and you're going to fold it in the middle and press again and then you're going to fold the whole thing completely in half and press really good, and then you're going to go to the sewing machine and you're just going to do a top seam. about an eighth of an inch from each of these long folded edges and I'm going to do that right now off camera, now that you've finished making your little tab for the D ring that you want to take and place it on one side of the panel of the window, but you're not going to sew both panels at the same time, you just want to sew one at a time, so just lay it down and move the bottom right here out of the way and then you'll do it, so we're going to baste it right now and then you're going to take the little tab for the D ring and you're going to put it through the window just like that and then we're going to baste it over to the other side, so again you're going to move this to the side and then you're going to baste it into place , then just make sure they are even and then you can cut off the excess.
I have the little tab for the D-ring sewn on both sides, but I forgot to attach the D-ring when I was showing it in the video, so make sure you sew the D-ring on first before sewing the other side down. Now we're getting ready to pin and pin all of this so we can pin all of our sides, so what you want to do is have this outside piece with the window and then you have this expert headset with these zippers sewn on. In the middle you want to put those sides together and then you have to line the pieces with the zipper sewn in the middle, so you're going to put those two sides together so that now you have two lining places and two outside sides and that's a bag. you're going to turn it inside out and then again on this side you have two pieces of lining with a zipper in the middle, you're going to put those pieces of lining together and then on this side you have the outside with the window and the outside so this will be facing out on the bag with the zipper in the middle and then you will have them right sides together, so now what you have here is four layers, one, two, three and four, so you have four layers of lining and four layers of the outside, but the top two layers will be joined together and then the bottom two layers will be joined together and the top two layers represent one side of the bag and the bottom two layers represent the other side of the bag so let's start by pinning these sides together these two layers what you want to do is open the zippers, you will open the zippers almost completely, it doesn't have to be completely now you want to take the top two layers and your seams will go this way, but the zipper tape will go this way, so so that the teeth of the zipper are facing the lining, then you'll take both sides of the outside and you'll want to match up where the fold shows. the fold here this is the fold on this side and here is the fold on this side that you want to match perfectly and then the zipper tape, if you have sewn everything precisely, the top of the zipper tape should also match perfectly and then We're going to take a pin and put it in there, now the pin is going to hold it very securely, but you never want to sew over a pin, so when we sew this, we're going to sew as close to the pin as we can. and then we'll take it out now, like I said before, you have a nice flat seam here, you don't have this unnecessary bulk from where we sewed above, you have nice flat seams here and if you want your seams to be even less bulky You could just remove the woven interfacing from the lining and that will help too, but the Pelin SF 101 is light enough to start with, so it won't give us any problems, so you can see how everything is nice and flat on both of them. sides and then you will do the same on this side, make sure the seams are facing the outside and the top of the zipper tape is facing the lining, you will pin them together making sure everything is perfectly aligned and then you just go To trim along the edges, make sure everything lines up and even sew, just trim all the way around.
I finished trimming and pinning everything and I actually went ahead and trimmed and pinned both sides together now that you saw this. You're going to have one side down on the base of your machine and as you sew, you're just going to fold the top layer out of the way as you sew just like that and you want to start from the right side of the lining. Here you will sew everywhere and then you will stop here because you want to leave an opening to turn and make sure you have opened both zippers at least 3/4 of their length.
It doesn't have to go all the way, but at least 3/4 of the way, so let's go to the sewing machine now and sew this. I'm going to sew this with a 2.5 stitch length, so I'm just going to take this top part and put it aside and now put my presser foot in place. I'm sewing with a 3/8 inch seam allowance, so you'll want to backstitch and take it

easy

around the curves. What I like to do is just let the feed dogs do the work and then I guide them very, very gently around the curve with my hands and without putting too much pressure on the part.
I like to go slow here because I don't want to lift my presser foot and readjust it, that's where the Jags and their bends come in, so go slow and now I'm going to push the top layer out of the way, like I said before, that pin really keeps everything in its place. so I'm going to get as close as I can and then I'm going to take it off so I don't hit it and then I'm going to keep sewing and I'm going to take this out of the again and the same thing just go slow around the curve if you go slow enough and keep guiding with your hand you won't have I readjust the presser foot, move this out of the way and push this part out of the way, now you can Look, because I didn't do it, so the top seam goes all the way to the edge.
I just have that flat seam there. I don't have any extra volume because of that little crease from the top seam, so again I'm going to go. close to the pin, but I'm not going to sew through the pin or over the pin now, so around my last curve here and then I'll stop right here, so that's it, now you're going to go ahead and sew the other side and when sew the other side, let's start again on the lining, so come down on this end here and then you'll just fold this out of the way as you sew, both sides of the bag are now sewn together and there are two separate bags that are connected in the middle via that window and all I did after I finished sewing was pin them to my corners and I just opened up all my seams and they just pressed from one side, now you just want to trim everything but you don't want to trim the area where the opening is so I like to take my scissors, I go a little bit past the opening and then I start cutting all around and I'm going to trim about to somewhere between 1/8 and a quarter of an inch around and it's going to do this on both sides when I'm trimming, trim Place the bag on the bottom first and fold the top bag so it doesn't accidentally get in the way. cut this while you trim the other side of the bag.
I've got everything cut out and now all we have to do is run our hand down one side of the lining and we're going to start pulling everything out on the right side now you just want to reach in and go to one side of the bag and you're going to push those corners in. rounded with your fingers just like that and then you will reach the other side of the bag after removing the lining. and you're going to do the same thing, you're going to reach in and just push those rounded corners out. Okay, here's the tab for the D-ring now if you want the D-ring tab to be a little bit closer to the zipper. you would just make the window open a little bit closer to the zipper, so once you've got all the rounded corners out you'll also go to where the zipper is and actually push it up, just take your finger in there and push it in up and you'll see that the corner is nice and square and you'll do that on each end of both zippers and after the zippers are pushed up into place and you'll have everything pretty well defined here.
You're going to come over to your iron and you're actually going to roll these seams, just roll them together like this and then as you're rolling you're going to press, you can also go in there with a toe twist or If you need to get those curves a little bit nicer, keep going. and press everything and then when you're done pressing everything you want, move on to the sewing machine or you can hand sew whatever feels most comfortable for you. I actually like to hand sew for videos. I always sew it on the machine, but if I'm making something to sell, I like to sew it by hand because that's the way it is, in my opinion, the result is much better, but you have to fold them. edges down like this and then you'll sew the opening closed, so go ahead and do all that and then we'll work on the doll.
I sewed my linings and I have everything pressed pretty well right now, here's the zipper tap, now if you're I think it looks too long, it's actually not because depending on what you put in this bag, you need it to expand a bit, but I'll probably put a small rivet pretty close to the D-ring if you don't. If you have a rivet, you can sew a little bit right here and that will help secure things a little bit more and still give it the ability to expand so that my zippers are nice and square, there are no dents on the inside and that's how it looks. see inside now we'll move on to making the bracelet to make the bracelet we'll do the same thing we did when we made the little tab for the D ring you want to take your fabric and by the way, both tabs. for the D ring and the bracelet it hasn't been fused to anything it's just the plain fabric so again you're going to take it and fold it in half lengthwise and give ita really good squeeze, then you're going to open it up and you're going to be able to Fold each long side towards the center and press really good, then you're going to take your little swivel clip and you're going to put it on your wrist and then you're going to open up the ends and make sure it doesn't twist. anything here and gather the edges together and you're going to go to sewmachine and sew here with a 1/2 inch seam, so I'm going to do it off camera.
I've got that seam sewn up and I pressed it open and now you're just going to fold everything back the way it was and bring the folded edges together. and now you're going to top seam 1/8 inch from the folded edge on this side and 1/8 inch from the

double

folded edge on this side and you're going to turn around and keep moving. remove the swivel clip while sewing, so again I'm going to do that off camera, so here's the completed bracelet. I made the top seam 1/8 inch from each edge like I said and then I moved the twist lock to the side where the seam is where we join the two ends of this bracelet together and then I just sewed in the ditch right where that seam is just to keep everything together and then I put a rivet so that there you can put the bracelet here now and the bag is now complete.
