paint

and having to go back and try to get another one, these were the last two I picked up at Home Depot so it made me a little nervous so I bought both so we'll see what happens there and how much I need then I also have hardware since my hardware is outdated and doesn't match the rest of my house.

I went ahead and chose the darker hardware, this one is in Coco bronze and I just chose the contractor. packages that save a little bit of money so you end up saving a few bucks when you buy it in a package like this so I have three of those and then I also have these ones that are for the drawer handles so I went ahead and I took some of those and the same finish, then I have some Solo cups and I have labels because as I understand it, it's very important to have all the same hinges labeled for each cabinet and I just don't want to mix them up because then they don't fit properly there, so I'll use Solo glasses to keep everything organized and I'll also use them to hold my brushes when I'm

I have painter's tape. I have a I'll be working in my garage and I grabbed these little tripods just to help with the cabinet doors like they were and then I have two paint brushes and I actually chose a higher quality paint brush because I thought you know, if you don't like brush strokes and you want If you want

your

cabinets

to turn out really nice, then you'll probably want to use a decent brush, but you can use anything wherever she wants, but I thought spending a couple extra bucks and getting a nicer brush might help my finish come out better, so I have two of those in case one starts to wear out.

You definitely don't want

your

bristles to get bulky, worn and frayed because that is. This will also affect your finish so I have to do that just in case, these are the supplies I have for this project. Okay so I went ahead and opened up one of the kits and I just wanted to show you what's inside so we have the protective top coat here we have two cans of the sticky coat and Home Depot actually dyed them for me so every time You choose your color, they will basically dye it whatever color you want. There are many colors here in the box. that you can see and you can choose any of these colors, so I chose the pure white, which is the first color, and they went ahead and dyed these for me and then we have this decorative glaze that I don't think I'll use.

Using that is if you wanted to add another layer of color on top, but I don't want to do that, so we have the degausser that DeBlasio works like you're sanding the cabinet, so instead of standing them up, you just put this on. Put the Glosser in and it takes the shine off the cabinet and makes the paint stick better and then we have some paint sticks to remove the paint and then they also give you a DVD so you can watch it if you want to learn how. to make them, which I'll definitely be watching and then it looks like some kind of towels, probably maybe something just to wipe them down, this actually looks like an anti-static cloth, which is really cool because it gets all the dust off the cabinet so that when you paint, you don't you have residue and then you get two of these little green sponges for scrubbing.
I get them when you clean the

cabinets

or shine them, so like I said, I'll walk you through the entire process. You'll see me do this from start to finish and I'll have all of my supplies linked in my description box so I started by just putting all my Solo cups in and labeling them and then I'll mark all the doors with a number before I remove them so on the number cup one I have all the hinges and screws for door number one and that way I don't lose track and when I go to put the doors back they go in the same place and Since I made my kitchen in two parts, I made all the upper cabinets, first I put them back in and then did the lower cabinets.
I was able to reuse the same cups that were labeled for the bottom half as well, so I didn't really have to. I made them for the bottom half, so of course I couldn't film the entire cabinet process because even just filming little clips like this I ended up with seven and a half hours of footage that I had to reduce to a thirty minute video. but at least you will be able to see me do each step once so you can see it and understand what it takes to follow these steps and make sure you stay tuned until the end because I will share all my tips. and tricks that I learned throughout this process things that I would have done otherwise things that might help you, so stay tuned and if you have any questions about something I'm doing or any materials I'm using, leave them in the comments.
I will be happy to answer them. Make sure you clean your cabinets really well with something like Dawn dish soap, which is a good degreaser. When I got to this corner cabinet I decided not to put the door back on because it was pretty dated so I'm just covering up the screw holes so I can leave it as a decorative cabinet and this is what all the cabinet doors look like when installed. They were removed and washed and now it's time to shine them. Well thank you very much. It was a great day and the thing to remember with deglossing is that this is what will make the paint stick to the cabinets so you want to make sure you do this step very thoroughly and make sure you wear a pair of gloves that the cabinet kit ago.
I don't come with gloves so I bought them at Dollar Tree and after the glass you're going to want to wipe them down with a slightly wet towel just a little bit of water so now all my cabinet doors have been washed and EGH. lost and wiped it off with a wet towel and now it's time for the bonding code, so you're going to want to take out the stick paint and shake it well and you're going to want to use a good quality brush. I will link the The brush I used in the description box worked great and I was very happy with the finish and before painting each door, I wiped the door with the tack cloth to make sure there was no dust or debris on the door or the paint.
The kit comes with the non-stick cloth, so you don't have to buy them. However, it does not come with a brush, so you will have to purchase a brush. So don't be alarmed if the first coat doesn't look right. Okay, I don't think it should look good, this is a very sticky paint so the paint will stick to the cabinet doors and chip less afterwards, so I don't think it should look smooth until you get to a few more coats. late. and then the top coat, so don't stress about it, I promise it will look very pretty in the end, just remember to always paint with the grain of the wood and we won't follow it, we will, we will make it sweet, that's what I No, you understand, you keep me on my feet and we don't do it.
Now you will see me make glass inside this cabinet. The only reason is because this cabinet will be painted inside and become a decorative cabinet for decoration. Normally you don't do it. I have to dig out the leak or paint the inside of his cabinets, but that's the only reason I was doing it. We can do it and my kitchen cabinets inside are pretty organized right now. They are usually not that organized. Usually my kitchen cabinets would do it. There will be a mess inside, but I organized them recently and I can link that video at the end if you want to watch it and see me tidy up and clean the inside of my cabinets before I paint them.
I will do it too. I just wanted to let you know that it took me five coats to get really good coverage on my cabinets, but I think I'm definitely the exception, not the rule, because other videos I watched mentioned three to four coats, so I guess. Five is a bit excessive, the only two reasons I can think of is number one. I may have applied very thin coats to begin with, so you know, I was really afraid of having hate trips or puddles of paint anywhere, so I was applying this very, very thin, so I think maybe my five layers would be the equivalent of four layers.
The other problem is that you know it depends on how much coverage you want in the end and what would make you happy. I wanted really really good coverage like I wanted it to look like the cabinet had almost been sprayed and I really think that's the effect I ended up getting, but it took five coats to achieve because you want to minimize the paint strokes that you know with each coat, so You don't remove them completely, but each layer minimizes the look of the brush strokes there, so I think it depends on what you're looking for, but I'd say three to five layers seems reasonable to me.
How many coats can you need? Sometimes you fall but we get up and things off the ground. I really want no one to know. Find out where the path is going, even if you are falling. I will continue searching from my heart so that you can see. I also installed some Solo cups on the garage floor so I could paint more doors at the same time with a two hour drying time between them and having to paint the front and back of each door. It's just not an efficient way to work so I needed to be able to paint more doors at the same time so I set this up this way even if the sky is falling and here's the part where I realized I needed to paint all of them. of the doors at the top at the same time, so I moved everything to the dining room and placed everything in Solo glasses.
At that moment I realized that I didn't need those little tripods. I could only use the Solo cups which actually worked better. In my opinion they were more stable and mobile and inside I was able to paint them all at the same time and always have the ceiling light ready to go to paint whether day or night and also be able to control the climatic factors because living in I was in south Louisiana, it was very humid outside, it was also windy and some people had mowed their grass and grass clippings were flying towards my doors, so I realized it was much better.
I could control the variables much easier by just bringing the whole thing inside, laying the tarp over my floors and getting to work, we've just been shaking, what is this? So here I am at the final step which is to apply the top coat and the tips I have for you for the top coat are to make sure you have a very clean brush and in good condition and if you want to use a new brush, it's okay if not. , just clean the other one really well and make sure it's in good condition and then apply the top coat a little thin.
It's very helpful, you might think you might need more top coat because that would add more protection, but it didn't really work that way for me, it was like less is more and you don't like the product pulling into the corners now. applying the top coat was actually a little stressful because I think I might have gotten a bad amount of top coat. There were these little silver flecks inside that work, I think they came from the inside of the can and I even opened the second can to make Claro and it was like that on the second can too.
I even changed my shirt only to think it was coming off my shirt because there was some kind of debris there and you can see me removing it but it did anyway. It's a little infuriating having to remove that from all the doors while I'm trying to apply the top coat, but I managed to get through it. I thought it was the worst thing that was going to happen to me in terms of applying the top coat. top layer, but I was wrong, we ended up having a swarm of termites. I live in southern Louisiana, so it's pretty common this time of year.
I have a swarm of termites but they were all trapped in my top layer so I was a little bummed about that but in the end they didn't cause any damage. I don't think they're heavy enough to mess up the top much so I got really lucky so the next step was to just put that hardware back on so I can lift the doors back up mom said I'd say at this point it's probably The hardest part of the whole project is when you look at the top and it's perfect and beautiful and exactly how you wanted it and then you look at the bottom and I realize you have to start completely over and do this again and it just doesn't work. you know if you can finish it so I was able to move on luckily I'm not sure how probably because of this channel and knowing that I was excited to post the video but if you don't have that motivation at the time that's okay and if you want to get it over with and maybe take a week or two off and then get your ass done, I think that would actually be very cautious because it can be a little overwhelming so break this project up however you need to, it's a huge task.
Videos like this tend to make these things look easy, but there is a lot of work to do behind the scenes. I spent two whole days. just caulk and putty all the wood so the cabinet is ready because there were a lot of cracks here this is a gap that existed between my cabinet and the wall and it was very very wide at the top and then it narrowed down to a Vy not even I was able to fill that with kocher speckle it was too big so I ended up breaking up paint sticks and putting them in there like shims and that worked great and then I covered it with putty but there are just little things like this is going to take you time.
All the baseboards and molding under the cabinets had to be caulked and painted. You know, these are things I didn't film because they're super boring to watch, but it's still work that needs to be. This is taken into account, so when you get into this project, know that there will be a lot of prep work before you even get to the painting part and I'm not saying any of this to discourage you from doing this project. I just want to be honest. with you and honest about the work that it really requires but the truth is that it is a lot of work but the other truth is that you can totally do this it is very doable I can do it you can do it we can achieve this project and it is totally worth it.
I am absolutely in love with my kitchen and it was worth every minute, so don't be discouraged, do it, paint your kitchen, but count the cost before you start and understand that it may not cost much. money to do something like this, but it's going to cost you a little bit of time, so now my kitchen is finished and I just want to come over and give you a quick tour so you can get a little closer look at exactly how it turned out. and then at the end I'll share some tips that I learned during the process and some things that I can do differently if I ever do this again in case any of you are trying this project that might help you so let's take a moment . little haul I think this little decorative cabinet might be my new favorite place in the kitchen.
I put up this little sign that says thank you from Hobby Lobby and a couple of my favorite cookbooks, as well as a plant and a small black wire bowl with some wooden spoons. and one of the placemats on my dining table that connects it to the dining room, so I'm very happy with the result. I have a little candle there from my spring decor and I can't wait to go decorate this for summer. Also, one thing I would recommend buying for your cabinets are these little bumpers that I bought at Home Depot, they are very, very cheap and they just protect the cabinets when they are closed so you have peace of mind and it protects the paint, and here it is.
A little close up of the hardware I chose, as well as the drawer pulls. Now, normally, lighting isn't really part of a painting project, but our kitchen had very dated fluorescent lighting, so we went ahead and replaced the light over the sink. as well as the base light in the kitchen and then we go ahead and add some of this decorative lighting on the cabinets so these are battery operated puck lights from Home Depot and they are wonderful and you just stick them on there adhesive style command strips. and then they come with a nice little remote control that you can change the temperature of the lights and you can control whether you want them to have a timer or not and it's very convenient to have right so what I want is just to give Guys a couple of tips in case you are trying this project in the near future and the first tip I have is to make sure you are highly motivated before starting this project;
You may have to watch videos like this over and over again until you're ready because honestly it takes a lot of motivation and there's a point that you get to or that I got to where I was really tired and I didn't want to do any more and I he took everything he could. I had to get up the next morning and keep going. I thought this project would take five to seven days. For me personally it took me two weeks and that was with my daughter Noelle helping me. Many thanks to Noelle for being my help.
She was an incredible help, she is 14 years old and she was like a duplicate version of me helping me, so she did an amazing job, but it doesn't matter if you have help or not, this is a long project and it is not a project that will get a instant gratification. and her kitchen will turn white in just a few days, so it depends on the size of your kitchen. You may have a small, medium or large kitchen. I think mine is maybe a medium sized kitchen, but it took me almost two full weeks, so keep that in mind.
Don't be discouraged, it will happen. The second tip I have for you is to make sure you paint all the doors you are working on at the same time because there is two hours of drying between coats, so if I am only doing four or five doors at a time like I did at the beginning, that's not going to work. It took you about three years to paint your kitchen and that's how I started this project and I realized very quickly that that wasn't going to work so what I did was I divided my kitchen into upstairs and downstairs and I painted all the upper doors first and I let those layers dry, I did one layer on all the top doors so I could cover all the top doors and just continued, then I re-attached those doors to give myself more room to work because they were all over my living room and then I did the bottom half .
The third tip I have is to make sure you have some good supplies, but I don't need fancy supplies spending more on supplies doesn't seem to help so I thought I needed these fancy tripods to help with the painting process and get them off the ground and cups. They just worked. better, so I would recommend buying a ton of Solo cups, you'll use them to shore up your cabinet doors, you'll use them to paint your shop hardware because we number all the doors and the associated hardware so you can match them on the Solo cups. They are very useful for many things, so I would buy a lot of Solo cups and skip the tripods.
The other thing for me personally is that it was better to paint indoors than outdoors. I tried it outdoors, it was very windy. I live in South Louisiana it's very humid and the weather can be a little rainy and humid in the air so it wasn't a good idea to paint cabinets if you live in a really dry and cool climate that would probably be beautiful but for my. Personally, living in Louisiana it didn't work out, it felt too humid, so I brought everything inside and painted inside and it felt like everything was so much smoother, plus I could paint no matter what time of day or night because I had power last time.
The advice is a bit strange but it's just about having fun in the process, it won't always be fun, some days will be almost miserable, you just want this to be over and you can't believe you are. I keep doing it and it's frustrating and it kind of goes hand in hand with the motivational advice of trying to have fun with it. My daughter and I have some really fun times together and we use it as a bonding experience, so I think if you can find a way to do it and make it memorable, that's a plus because otherwise your motivation starts to DANC and it's difficult to overcome everything said.
I love my new kitchen. I am totally happy with her. I do not regret. for a second I don't know exactly how much it costs because I had to go to Home Depot several times but I know the kids. I had to have two for the size of my kitchen, so it's $160 for the rest. Oh, Liam, paint. kids so $160 was like my base price and then adding hardware I added maybe another 30 to 40 and then used the same decor I had. I just moved things around my house and put in a couple of cookbooks. my cabinet and someone's spoons I had and I think the only thing I bought was the little gray Hobby Lobby sign.
I think it cost $7.00, so I didn't like redecorating my kitchen. Oh, I bought the homemade sign from Hobby Lobby and that was $9.99, so you know, it depends on how much you're changing your kitchen or how much it's going to cost, but I mean, if you're just looking at the paint, I'm guessing probably around of $200 to paint this kitchen so it's definitely a money saver and I love it and I'm super pleased with it. I'm so grateful that when I walk in here now it feels so much bigger, it feels so much fresher and new and joyful, and I love being in this kitchen. so I'm very grateful that I was able to complete this project and again I'm very grateful to my daughter Noelle for helping me and I hope that this has motivated you and made you feel like you can achieve this too and that.
It's doable and you have all the motivation you need to tackle something like this in your own kitchen, so if you're new to my channel, thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you subscribe so you don't miss out on the future. videos, thank you very much for watching and I hope you have a wonderful day, goodbye.
