Jojo Rabbit: A Gut Wrenching Comedy

Don't you love it? Jojo Rabbit, a film that premiered in 2019 to great critical acclaim. It is a satirical coming-of-age story about a boy who grew up in Nazi Germany. This film received excellent reviews and even an Oscar for Best. Adapted script, but it also received its fair share of bad reviews, so I'm wondering if there's something that the general public missed that makes this movie not all it's cracked up to be. I don't believe it. I really enjoy this movie and I think there's a lot to appreciate about it, but don't let me make that decision for you.

I'm going to watch the whole movie and talk about the things I think are good and the things I think are bad and then you can make that decision. For you, I don't want to waste any more time, so let's dive into the movie which starts with Jojo talking to himself in the mirror, gloating about going to the Nazi camp, we have a dialogue that tells us that he is completely dedicated to Hitler. Germany and this is where we get to see his imaginary friend Hitler and we're already at a point where I need to talk about something: This movie generated a lot of controversy when it came out, which isn't surprising at all, I mean.

It's a silly movie about Nazis, of course, it's going to generate controversy, but it does something that I think is important: it shows Nazis and smears them in a light, it satirizes them in a way that makes them look completely incompetent and downright stupid. sometimes. I think this is a good thing because it doesn't give people who don't understand satire something to admire. Satire is an incredibly thin line and I don't blame anyone who is put off by the depiction of Nazis in this film, obviously. You are free to feel whatever you want about this movie, but this movie's portrayal of the Nazis is not about making light of a horrible event in history, but about showing people today that Nazis were people. stupid and ignorant people who committed heinous atrocities for similar reasons. stupid and ignorant reasons, the reason I think it was smart to make them look completely ridiculous is because satire can sometimes backfire, as in the case of the movie American History in southern California. was intended to show how brutally violent and disgusting these extremist ideals can be and don't get me wrong, it does an excellent job at this and I really think it is an excellent film, the problem arises when there are people who are already under the influence of those ideals They won't see Edward Norton's character as a disgusting monster, they see him as a stalwart that they can look up to and try to emulate and this is where I think Jojo Rabbit succeeds because he doesn't give anyone that opportunity.

I can't imagine any neo-Nazi watching this movie and thinking that Hitler seems like a totally badass end result, although whenever satire is really well done, there will always be people who don't understand it or appreciate it. and honestly, it's okay either way, you're free to feel it however you want. I just think it's important to understand the intentions behind a piece of art before criticizing it after Jo Jo gets ready to leave and has enough Heil Hitler, we see. running through the streets Heil Hitler to everyone he sees and we got these pieces of what looked like real Nazi propaganda and I'm glad they put those clips there because it shows us that people like Jojo really could have existed, it shows us that there really were there were people in Nazi Germany so enthralled and captivated by Hitler that they worshiped him possibly in the same way Jojo does now.

Jojo is Hitler's youth camp and we get an introduction to Sam Rockwell's character, Captain Clinton and Dorff, who was a soldier in the German army but lost one of his eyes and is now forced to run the camp, we immediately see that Clinton Dorf is disenfranchised by Nazi Germany, as he says that even though the country is on the defensive and there is not much hope of winning the war. We're apparently doing fine, we also find out that he's constantly drunk and doesn't really care about doing his job right. We are also introduced to the rebellious character of Wilson and Alfie Allen, who are not really that important to the story, although they are an excellent source of

comedy

for the film, now the children are told that the children are going to learn to march, shoot weapons, blowing things up, etc., and that the girls are going to learn how to make beds, bandage wounds and get pregnant, which, while hilarious. in the movie it's very likely the way gender roles were taught to kids back then, now we get a little montage of the kids playing war games and doing physical activities that Jojo doesn't really seem cut out for during one of the games. where there is a small fight, we see Jojo trying to avoid getting into fights.

We also see some of the older kids notice Jojo doing this. Now we see the children in a classroom where they are discussing what a Jewish person is like. While the ridiculousness of this scene is turned up to 11 in this film that talks about how Jews have snakes for tongues, horns, and devil scales, there are stories of German teachers taking Jewish children to biology classes where they were pointed out about racial inferiority. . z' so this is what I'm talking about with the whole tycoon satire YTD takes real events that happen in the story and maxes out the ridiculous meter just to show how stupid and horrible everything really was after that we see the kids in A Book burning in this part was really powerful for me because we see Jojo, who seems almost confused about why he is doing what he is doing, but all the people around him are excited and clapping, so he joins in, which which is a great way to portray how insecure they are. of the people of Germany felt back then that maybe they hadn't fully realized what they were doing, but they were told they were special and everyone around them was cheering and applauding them, so they just joined in, but in contrast, right behind Jojo we see a cleaning. door who realizes what they are doing but can't really do anything to stop it and we see the complete disgust in this space as he resorts to more alcohol probably to try to block it now we see Jojo lying in this tent talking to his best friend Yorky , who steals the show every time he's in a scene, by the way, about how if he ever caught a Jew, he would kill him and take him to Hitler so he could become his best friend, even though York thought he was his best friend and we became best friends the next day, however, the older teens take the kids to the forest.

One of the teens tells the kids that they have to be willing to kill to be useful in Hitler's army and he calls Jojo. asking him if he's willing to kill and Jojo tries to act confident saying, of course, I love killing, so the teens pull out a

rabbit

and tell Jojo to kill it. He is obviously hesitant and nervous, showing us that he is not the person he wants to be. For a hardcore Nazi he would be so good at killing Jews, he would be part of Hitler's personal guard, but deep down you can't even kill an innocent

rabbit

Deep down, he is a good person and doesn't want to kill anything except that now the teenagers tell Jojo that he is a coward just like his father, they start making fun of Jojo, they say that he is as scared as a bunny and they give him the Jojo rabbit nickname. Jojo escapes into the forest and is visited by Hitler or yes and what happened and Jojo says that he just couldn't kill the rabbit, but Hitler tells Jojo that the rabbit is an intelligent, fast and cunning animal that Jojo should be aware of. proud to be.

This gives Jojo the confidence to run back to camp, grab a grenade, and throw it. However, the grenade hits a tree and bounces back towards Jojo sending him flying, we see Jojo rush to the hospital and we see that he has turned and he hasn't, but honestly, they make a big fuss because Jojo looks like a disgusting monster when he's alone. You know, he has a couple scars on his face, but this is also where we see JoJo's mother, Rosie, for the first time. This character is played by Scarlett Johansson, who also says that she now does an excellent job.

Her performance and interpretation of this character is really what got me hooked on this story, but I really love Rosie as a character, she is an incredibly kind and fun person, and you can easily see how deeply she cares and loves Jojo, she gives him Jojo trusts him to go back outside and gets him a job at the idiot cleaning office, his job is to go around the city handing out people's draft and posting propaganda leaflets, but this is where we start to see the real darkness that this film has buried beneath its comedic outer shell as they walk through the city.

See Rosie looking at a group of people who were publicly hanged. A man with a label. This is before the fight in Germany. The feast shows us that these people were probably hanged for treason. Jojo asks his mother what they did and she simply answers what they could. shows us that she appreciates what these people did and stands behind them. Jojo arrives home after work to find that his mother is missing and while searching he hears a noise upstairs, he enters his sister's room and discovers a door that leads to a crawl space within the walls inside the crawl space finds a girl who lives there Elsa is a Jewish girl who has been living within the walls of JoJo's house for some time and knows what will happen if someone finds out that she lives there, so she threatens Jojo with the one who plays the Jewish stereotypes and misconceptions Jojo has been taught to make him fear her, she tells him that if he tells anyone about her, she will tell them that he and his mother helped her, which will get them all killed. , so Jojo. has an argument with Hitler about what they should do so she comes to the conclusion that he should try to negotiate after this goes wrong, we see Rosie return home, she is obviously trying to sneak into the house without Jojo I heard, but he was already waiting by the door. door, we still don't know for sure, but it is quite easy to assume, since we already know that she supported the hanged men;

She was probably out doing things in an attempt to sabotage the German war effort after a conversation with Rosie about hearing noises upstairs. we see him standing outside her mother's bathroom with a fire poker standing guard, this tells me that Jojo really is just a good kid who thinks he is doing the right thing. He was raised to believe that Jews are evil and harmful, so he is just trying to protect his Mother is next to Kaster Rosie in the crawl space with Elsa telling her that she can't be forced to choose between her and her son. and she says that Jojo is a bigot and that it took him three weeks to get over the fact that his grandfather wasn't a bigot.

She's not blonde, but she knows his sweet, innocent child is still there. This is such a tragic situation. Rosie is obviously disgusted by the Nazis' ideology, but is forced to allow her only son to be completely indoctrinated into it so she can protect him now. We see Jojo in a pool designed for rehab and while Jojo is in a therapy bed we get a photo of Rosie's shoes, which I'm sure is completely irrelevant, so yeah, no need to remember what her shoes look like. I don't even know. I know why I mention it now, Jojo goes and talks to Cleanse and Dorf and asks him what he should do if he sees a Jew cleaning.

Dorf tells him that if he sees a Jew then he should report it and they will kill him and anyone who helped and a few other people just in case, if you see him you tell us, you tell the Gestapo and they tell the SS and then they go and they kill the truth and anyone who helped with the job and because it's a very paranoid time. It's probably other people, in case it's quite a long process, he even asks if the Jew hypnotized anyone to help him, showing us more of his complete naivety, but clearing Dorf gives Jojo the idea to write a book on how to identify to a Jew. because without her funny hats it's almost impossible, which was very funny to me, so Jojo goes to Elsa and tells her that he will only let her stay if she tells him everything about the Jewish race.

He tells Jojo that his mother is kind and treats her like a person, but Jojo tells him that she is not a person, not a proper person, this then sends Jojo talking about how he is superior to her because of his ancestry, so Elsa grabs him and tells him that if he's that strong he should be able to do it. To free himself from her, she tells him that there are no weak Jews, that they were chosen by God and that her people were chosen by a pathetic man who can't grow a mustache. This is also correct.

I just love it and it starts to start. JoJo realizes that he is not special because of his ancestry, there is nothing in his blood that makes him superior to others. Now Joe Jonah's mother is having dinner and Rosie seems to be happy about something and she tells Jojo that the war is coming to an end asGermany. is being defeated, this angers Jojo and he tells us that Germany is still going to win the war. Jojo then says that he doesn't want the food to go to waste and begins to eat the extra food, this is because he knows that the extra food is going to more we begin to see tensions rise between Joe Jonah's mother in this scene, there comes a point in which Joe Joe says he wishes his father was here because he would understand, then Rosie grabs her coat, puts some charcoal on her face and pretends to be her father and yells at Joe Joe the scene hits me hard Rosie is an amazing mother, it's so obvious how much she loves and cares for Joe but it's not in the overtly loving way seen in so many movies, she jokes with Joe.

Joe, she argues with him, but she always lets him know how much she cares. Now we have another interaction between Joe Joe and Elsa where we find out about Nathan's fiancée, but this conversation is much more civil, we see that they are starting to open up to each other a little and it is quite charming now that he decides to forge a letter from Nathan. I'll leave her when Nathan breaks up with Elsa. Elsa ends up because of this, she runs and hides in her crawl space, but I love this scene because Joe Joe was obviously upset by the fact that he hurt Elsa, he goes and forges a second letter talking about how Nathan really doesn't. wants to break up with there, this is where we really start to see Joe Joe's worldview change. he was who he wanted to be at the beginning, he wouldn't have cared at all about hurting her because she wouldn't even be a person to him, but that's not Joe Joe, he understands that she is a person with feelings like him, then we see.

Joe Joe and Rosie go for a walk and talk a little about love and romance, but during this conversation Rosie tells Joe Joe that life is a gift and that we should show God that we are grateful to be alive and then we will receive another . shot of his shoes while dancing I really don't know why they keep having shots of his shoes, but you know, whatever, he just ignores it, like I said, they're not really important. Jojo is now back home and we see Gibson crayons for Elsa. He tries to act like it's nothing, hoping to believe that he still doesn't care. Jewish, but it's easy to say deep down, he knows he's being nice and it's just because he cares about her, they talk about him being crippled and Jojo complains that he'll never be kissed by a girl, so I offer to help too. kiss him, he tells him. which is illegal for Nazis and they choose to hang out let alone kiss, but Elsa tells him that he is not a Nazi, she knows that Jojo cares about her and that is something Nazi couldn't do, she tells him that he He's just a kid who wants to be. part of a club, which is a great way to portray what I'm sure it was like for many children growing up under the Nazi regime.

He's just a 10 year old boy who is told over and over again by all the adults around him that the ideologies of the Nazi Party or his one true path to greatness, he sees all the kids around him joining the Hitler Youth and excited about everything they are told, it is impossible to blame any child for falling into this trap and it is the same trap that Jojo fell into the deep end, he is really just a kind child who cares about other people, but these evil adults They've dressed him in a uniform, covered him in swastikas, and manipulated him into becoming like them, but that's not who Jojo is and all that's really needed.

At the end of the day, it is the exposure to a different way of thinking that makes him realize this throughout his life. In reality, he has only been shown the Nazi ideology, but through exposure to Elsa and realizing what the ideology really means beneath all the propaganda he allows her. To understand what's really going on after their talk, we see Jojo and Elsa just hanging around the house like they're just friends now, but there's a knock on the door and it's the Gestapo. Jojo lets them into the house and they immediately start breaking up. things separate as if they are searching for something, the tension really starts now as we know Elsa is hiding upstairs, it could only be a matter of time before they find her.

Stephen Merchant plays the top Gestapo officer and damn if he's the scary one. guy, however, we see a clean and orphaned Finkle enter the house and they say that they were there to leave some pamphlets for Jojo to hand out now, well the Gestapo is searching the house, the head officer asked Jojo where is his DJ knife and more. he shouts saying that he has it. I think it makes sense that she would come out of hiding and introduce herself as JoJo's sister because if she had been found in the crawlspace there would have been no doubt who she really was. serves to heighten the tension as we know that one wrong move wouldn't mean she was dead, this gets even worse when she is forced to give everyone in the room a Heil Hitler, she has to praise the man responsible for the loss of everything in her life and she has to do it eight times.

She then asked Elsa if she could see her papers. This part had me on the edge of my seat because we know that Nazi intolerance towards Jews is so high that she is wrong. in the slightest and they will kill her after she quickly grabs the papers that clean the door and he begins to read them, he asks her for a date of birth and she tells him May 1, 1929, clean and orphaned, he looks at her and says . Now we see the cleansing door for what he really is, he looks a lot like Jojo, he is a man who is good at heart but is trapped under this regime. Now we see Jojo at the table where he is having another conversation with Hitler and we are really good at seeing him as an amalgamation of JoJo in his conflict, obviously this is all in his head so when we hear Hitler question JoJo's loyalty, He is the one who questions his own loyalty, telling Hitler that Elsa is not a bad person, and Hitler goes into a speech to try. to remind the judge where her true loyalties are supposed to lie we now see Jojo walking through the city when he sees a butterfly, he starts walking after it and eventually flies away.

Jojo stands up and the camera pans with him to show Rosie's shoes hanging right next to him. For him, damn, I can't express how strongly he impacted me the first time I saw him. These are the same shoes that we have seen in previous scenes and every time we have seen them they have been dancing full of life and wonderfully. Joey now hangs the corpse on him for Jojo to witness. Jojo knows that his mother was a good person, he knows that she was always trying to do the right thing and now Jojo is being shown the full consequences of that because those traits were only rewarded with death. in the Nazi regime and that's what Jojo supported, he supported the regime that got his own mother killed and to see the weight of that on a ten year old is really something else, it would be hard to see someone go through something like this, but Watching it happen to a child is painful, there is beauty in this, although this movie keeps you distracted, it shows that Nazis are stupid and cartoonish, all for the laughs, but then it attacks you head on with how unpleasant and painful it is.

It really was this time for the people. and as hard as it is to watch, I can fix this movie. Roman Griffin Davis is acting in this scene. Also nothing short of phenomenal is the way he breaks down and hugs her and then tries, unsuccessfully, to tie her shoes, it's incredibly touching. It heartbreaks me to see after this Jojo comes home knife in hand and stabs another person in the shoulder. At first this confused me why stab her, but watching it again I realized that he is a confused kid, he just saw his own mother hanging from the gallows.

He's outraged and needs to get even with something and he could have rationalized that maybe it was someone else's fault that she's dead, she's the Jew that Rosie has been keeping within the walls after all, right after he stabs her, it dawns on him. turn around and collapse because he doesn't do it. He hates her, he knows it's not her fault and he's completely devastated now as we see them watching an airstrike from afar and Elsa tells Jojo that Rosie loved him and that all she ever wanted to do was protect him and that's why she allowed him to become in a Nazi and Elsa tell him how their parents were taken to the train station when he doesn't return, obviously implying that they were taken to a concentration camp and are probably already dead.

In the next scene we see Jojo walking through the city. we get to see the destruction caused by the airstrikes and then we see him rummaging through trash to find things to eat. I just can't imagine how the kids who were actually going through this must have felt, that's why I'm glad movies like this exist, it can really help give you an idea of ​​what other people's lives were like and I really don't think that this film is so far from reality in terms of the conditions Nazi Germany found itself in towards the end of the war.

Now Jojo is in town looking for food right at the beginning of the invasion and this is where we see an intense clash of tones, there are funny jokes and they are mixed with terrifying war scenes. Now this is quite subjective as I really can't. I'll tell you what you're going to find funny, so if the jokes don't hit you, they're not for you, but I personally find it very well done because at least to me it seems like this is exactly what the movie says. All of this makes us laugh in a historical period that should be viewed with disgust and horror, but I really think the purpose was to make you feel uncomfortable after the battle is over, even though we see Jojo walking and see that the Allies have nevertheless won a soldier. ally sees JoJo's uniform and they are sent to where the other prisoners are this is where he finds Dorf cleaning who has also been captured he tells him that everything has come to an end and that the party is over he tells Jojo that his mother was a good person, a good person, then does one last good deed, rips off JoJo's jacket and shouts, "Get away from me, Jew," and spits on Jojo, then a soldier picks up Jojo and carries him away from the prisoners as the clean endorphins are taken away and after they take him away, all we hear are gunshots and we get JoJo's reaction.

Oh wow, this movie really knows how to punch you in the gut. Clean holding freely was just a good person who unfortunately was placed on the wrong side by fate. It's obvious that he. He really didn't support the Nazi Party and he really liked Rosie and the last thing he does is tell Jojo to take care of Elsa and then he saves her life. It's really beautiful, but right after this, Jojo finds your key and your key says exactly. What we're all thinking after watching this movie: I'm going to go home and see my mother. I need a pair, but he also says that now that the war is over, Elsa can finally be free and can finally leave, so Jojo runs home.

He finds her and tells her what happened but he lies to her, telling her that Germany won the war and it's because he just doesn't want Elsa to leave, she's the only one.person who really remains in his life and if she leaves, he will leave. be truly alone, but he realizes that she won't be able to lie to him forever, so he goes back and fakes another letter from Nathan. Jojo tells her that he and Nathan have come up with a plan for her to escape from her so they can live together in Paris. and so she doesn't worry about Jojo, this is where we get to see a lot of character growth from them.

He went from loving Elsa dead to becoming a friend and being able to free her because he knows it's best for her, even if it means being alone, but after telling him all this, Elsa tells him that Nathan had died last year of tuberculosis and she let Jojo know that she knew all along that he had been forging these letters, so Jojo tells her that he loves her even though she thinks of him as a little brother and he tells her that he really has found a way to escape, but as he is preparing to leave he receives another visit from Hitler, who now has a bullet hole in the side of his head.

Hitler tells him. that he needs to get rid of the Jewish girl and go back to where he belongs, but Jojo says he kicks him out the window, a physical representation of his rejection of the Nazi Party, so now Jojo takes Elsa outside where he sees the American flag flying. now Elsa can finally feel freedom after years of hiding and the first thing she does is exactly what she said she would do: she dances just like Rosie said you danced to be free now that everyone else is free she can dance it's hard for me to imagine what it must be not being able to go out for years, being trapped in a dark space for years and then finally going outside and seeing true freedom is an amazing thing honestly but now the movie has come to an end omg I love this movie , there are so many things I can praise this movie for, so I'll start with my favorite part, the characters, all the characters.

They're so compelling in this movie, which is amazing once you realize that the only character who really experiences any growth is Jojo, but Elsa has such a tragic backstory that it makes you feel like she just needed to escape if she could. to get it. away from this horrible regime then everything would be fine, slowly seeing Orff's cleanliness and true colors is amazing to me, but the character that made me fall in love with this movie was Rosie, her undying love and care for Jojo was so obvious, but written in such a way Naturally, he didn't constantly tell Jojo that he loved him, we saw it by the way he interacted with him, the way he joked and insulted him with love, but still cared for him and encouraged him. when I needed it, everything was so beautifully written now, speaking of writing, the writing was great.

I think there are a few little details I could give it, like the fact that clearing and/or finding still appears wherever it's necessary for the plot. I mean, they always give an explanation, nation. because why does it usually seem contrived most of the time, but that being said, it's not like the script contains any major plot holes or artifice? There's no point in the movie falling apart, as they say, so I guess. It's another point where cinema wins by getting that wrong, go watch my Truman Show video if you don't understand what I mean. I'm not really a big fan of cinematography.

I just don't know much about it, but there were a lot of shots that I loved in the first place, the foreshadowing shots with the shoes are just an awesome way to familiarize the audience with those shoes so they can rip your heart out with them later. I will say, though, there does seem to be a big Carp over a good portion of the movie, which I'm sure was intentional for the tone they were going for, but my eyes got a little tired of the dull colors, really no big deal, although already I've talked about acting, but damn, I can.

I can't think of a single actor who hasn't done an incredible job. Roman Griffin Davis, of course, did an excellent job, especially for a 12-year-old who is on screen for almost the entire movie. He leaves me speechless. YTD is an excellent Hitler. As strange as it is, I appreciate the fact that I really felt like he was just trying to play a dumb version of Hitler rather than just using him as a shock factor to try to make his jokes funnier, but this brings me to the whole part of the satire. of the movie, it seems like the satire in this movie is that you either enjoy it or you're not okay, that sounds like nonsense, but what I mean is that you either can stand to watch a group of the most deplorable humans in history get shown as stupid or can't in any way is fine, but I will say this, there are people out there who don't like to subject themselves to witnessing atrocities like the Holocaust, it's not that they want to hide from the truth, just the fact that having to Watching people go through these things can be hard to swallow, which is okay.

I'm not going to tell you how you should feel about watching that kind of stuff, but movies like this can be important to those people because it gives them a good way to witness this kind of content in a way that they can handle it. I guess I've given a number to everything I've done so far, so I'll do it for this one too and after everything I've done. We talked today I think I'd go with an 8.5 out of 10. It's a beautiful film that will grab you with

comedy

gold and then punch you in the gut as soon as you're not looking.

I don't believe the script. is as well written or as strong as The Truman Show and that would be the reason this movie got half a point less score, but honestly, if someone who had never seen either movie asked me if they should watch it, I would have to choose Jojo Rabbit. I feel like this movie is much more important to humanity I guess and I think almost everyone should see it, but yeah, I think that's all I have to say about Jojo Rabbit for now, thanks for sticking with me through this whole thing.
