here in New Zealand.
Physically assaulted and a woman in her 70s hit in the head in Oakland while she was going to a women's rights rally. Now what is so often missed in this almost physical war between activists on both sides is the well-being of young people, even children. claiming they were born in the wrong body and need to change their gender activist outfit is a tribal thing or about how bigoted you are when we should be focusing on this question but what about the kids who are these vulnerable teenagers that we Are they given blocking medications? their puberty and then surgery to cut off their breasts, say, or their genitals, and does this really help them?
Joining me as a former BBC journalist who asked that question years ago in Britain, he wrote a devastating book called Time to Think, which has just been published. in an updated edition and in paperback Hannah BS, thank you again for coming on this show. First, tell us again how you got involved in this topic in the first place. Well, it was 2018 and there was a leak in a newspaper here in the UK. All he really said was that at this children's gender clinic based at the Stock Center claims have been made that the stories and reasons behind young people's angst around their gender and desire to do transition were not being fully explored, so that sparked my interest and then just a couple of months later, the content of these concerns, if you will, leaked further, so it was a report and then it turned out that these were actually the concerns of 10 staff members.
Now I don't know much. about the Australian Health System but here it is quite rare for a whistleblower in the NHS our National Health Service to get 10 from a small clinic is extraordinary and I thought something was going on here. She had a completely open mind. I didn't know if what they said was true or could be defended, but that's why I started looking into it now. What you found in your structure and what you wrote about in your book is absolutely shocking that children are quickly being pushed into transgender drug use. and you really know, literally, the life- and body-changing treatment when other problems you might think of are shown up quite often, not always, but quite often.
Hey, maybe that's the real problem or there's something behind this that tells us about that. Well, what we heard was that many. Of these children were unhappy, they might suffer clinically from depression or anxiety, some might have eating disorders, but generally speaking there was an unhappiness among them, many had been bullied at times, the bullying would be triggered after perhaps they had been bullied. declared homosexuals and then it would be homophobic bullying and essentially all of these kids, except for 2 or 3%, and the data is really poor, but what it seemed to be is that all of them were not only having difficulties regarding their gender, but they they also had other difficulties and the fear was that these were not being adequately explored before a referral for puberty blockers and it is quite difficult to convey to people how vulnerable some of these children were.
I mean, it wasn't the majority, but there were a small number that were in care and it's a small number as part of the referrals, but it's very overrepresented in terms of the population, so we looked after children, we had children who were not they spoke, children who could not read or write, children who also identified as another race. as a different gender and again you had some children, a small number but who had suffered the most extreme and terrible abuse or trauma, and what this staff was saying was not that something bad couldn't happen to you and you not be trans, it was I don't.
They rule it out, but they think they should wait, they know that we must be very careful. These drugs are very powerful. We don't know much about them. There's so much going on in these kids' lives that we really need to make sure. And they felt it wasn't happening and, in a small number of cases, children could be referred for puberty blockers after just one or two hours. Oh, that's just shocking. You also mentioned that a large number had autism and a good number also came from broken homes or that lost the father in one way or another it was just shocking uh I'm almost there I have a minute to finish uh the Great National Health Service Britain has now banned giving children puberty blockers at least for the time being, although they can still get it through other forms of treatment here, there has been almost no change like that, there is almost no discussion, it is transphobic, which it has to happen.
I don't want to be so presumptuous as to advise Australia, but essentially what has happened is that we have recognized it. This is not a question of culture, war, it is healthcare, it always has been, and what has happened here in the UK is that we have looked at the evidence base that other European countries have also done and it has been considered that there is not enough certainty that these drugs are safe or clinically effective now, that does not matter where those children live, the evidence base is the evidence base, whether they are here in England or in Australia, so we again medicine, to evidence. medicine based on medicine because, frankly, it's not fair and it's wrong that this group of children and young people are subject to a lower level of care than anyone would expect and that's what happened.
It's so true it's medicine not politics kids first Hannah thank you once again for your beautiful time thank you
