Jeep 4.0L engine sensors I suggest you keep on hand

Apr 21, 2024
What's happening in the garage today? We are talking about spare parts for the leading Jeep four. It could be the difference between camping on the side of the road or getting home. Let's get into this. What I'm talking about? Well, if you've never seen it. In one of my videos, I'm probably the biggest defender on the planet, on one of your days off, go on the good old Internet and find out where the nearest You Pull junkyard to you is, get out and go ahead and grab some parts. I'm talking about all the

sensors

, fuses, relays and other electronic parts that break down on your Jeep, they want to leave you on the side of the road, specifically today we are going to talk about the four right friends first in a very The common culprit is the throttle body

sensors

.

Here we are in this 1998 8 ZJ. Illustrate that to get to the throttle body sensors, you're going to take out the air box and while the throttle body is connected, go ahead and disconnect the actual connector. It's going to be a lot easier than when it's floating, so it's going to be four 10mm bolts. Once the fasteners are out you can lift it up and that will allow you to remove the throttle downshift and cruise control linkage. They all have small kneecaps. there on the throttle arm they just pop out now look at the throttle body here you have the idle air controller you have the throttle position sensor and the manifold actual pressure sensor each of these when they go bad or when they start working.

Going wrong will leave you on the side of the road or your vehicle will have a serious running problem, so having a spare of these could be the difference between a tow truck or getting home first. Let's take out your idle air

hand

ler each of these. The throttle body sensors are torque clamped. I think they are all T20 and T25. It seems that this iak is a T20. There you have it, there's the idle air

hand

ler as a side note. Cleaning this plunger, this plunger on the end. It moves in and out. to control the amount of air that passes through the auto throttle body at idle, cleaning this is part of a tune up on a four liter, here we go, idle air controller, first spare, let's pull, this could be the difference between a tow truck When we get home, let's move on to the actual pressure in our manifold.

I think those are t25, now they are to be completely honest. I haven't seen many Manold map or true pressure sensors fail at 4L, but it's still good to know the key. or the trick is there's a little rubber boot on the bottom that actually plugs in, that's where the inlet for the sensor is, so there's a little hole in the throttle body that goes to this nipple through this little rubber boot so you want to make sure you get that boot off intact you don't want to just yank it out and if it's broken you're going to want to replace it because that will give your ECU faulty readings of how much air your

engine

is pulling in and then this kind of here. boy the nightmare of water crossing 4 L everywhere the TPS throttle positioning throttle positioning throttle position detection what am I trying to say here throttle position sensor Christmas time amateur life is hard and difficult if you are stupid I tell you uh, this guy is picky and Very, oh, I just broke my little one.

I think I let myself go looking for a slightly more robust tool that comes out strong and the reason is that it is a steel bolt deep into this aluminum casting. That bolt and that casting are doing the dissimilar metals dance, so be prepared if you have to remove any of these sensors well, but specifically your TPS, you may like to fight with you now. What I was saying is that these guys sit on top of your

engine

and are highly susceptible to moisture and water, so when they go bad they make the transmission shift strangely and it feels like your transmission is about to come out and the reason is, um, oh Christmas, this tells your ECU how many throttles to open so it tells it where to shift and when to shift and how to shift so when these things go off they can make your engine go crazy it won't be at idle it won't change oh man, the guys are there um and since they are highly susceptible to moisture, you drive through a puddle, you get a little splash up there, all of a sudden your engine is running.
Oh, more fun than George Clinton, so I would recommend having a spare TPS or two, especially if you make a good amount of off-road gravy. I'm going to destroy all the T20s I brought. with me today on this mission, but I'll be lost if we don't get her out now of these Japanese vampire pliers, not long ago, they have a lot of very hard teeth, oh, you can do things like grab the stubborn ones. Bras aren't the right tool for the job, they're the tool you get a good grip on, you know, when you broke all the other T20s you brought that day, they'll mess up the bra pretty bad, but I mean, it's better than sitting around. on the side of the road so that's it your TPS sensor has to be in sync when you put them on look at those two teeth those two teeth line up with this bar um that's attached to the throttle blade look so , what I like. what you have to do is put it in and then turn it and then make sure that while it's aligned you can turn the throttle paddle, but having a sensor like this or a spare one like this could be a big help to get you home now, another stuff.
To know here, this housing for your idle air handler comes off and like I was saying, part of the tune up for a 4 ler is cleaning that idle air handler and the housing, those are the throttle body sensors, right? What other sensors should we install? the engine, let's take a good look folks, right here at the front of the engine is the coolant temperature sending unit that tells your computer how high the coolant temperature is and whether or not there is a situation of overheating in the Jeep, sometimes. you may get a high reading and it might be worth changing this to make sure it is a legitimate high reading on your cooling temp and not just a faulty sensor.
This type has a 3/4 deep socket, slide it in there. she comes out right now, you're going to lose some coolant when you take this guy out, but here he goes and cleans it up a little, leave it there as a spare, all friends, that leads us to the biggest pain in the butt sensor. on the four liter right down here, you'll notice the location is the passenger side of the engine under your distributor or cam position sensor depending, so here's your oil filter, right up there, which is your unit oil pressure sending, there's a big sensor so you're going to need a big plug, not all deep plugs will do, oh it has one of those red tabs, I bet you remove the red tab and then you can slide that guy on outwards, it measures one inch and a 16, um hexagon.
I'm not sure if the lace I brought today is going to work, it's not a trigger, so what you need and you can see the lace I brought today is not right, you need a lace that is super hollow on the inside and super deep. I have a carile. inches and 16, I'll try to find a link that I know works, but the good news is that nine times out of 10 a Nebraska nut rounder will get you that type or a 27 and there you have it folks, there's the oil pressure. Shipping unit for a Jeep 4L for any of you WJs who are curious.
It is not the same sender that goes on the 47. This is one of a 47 that I took out as a spare for my journal. This is the one. I just got this 1998 ZJ, very good friends, the next sensor we are going to talk about is exclusive to the latest model 4 readings. I'm here in one of my own wjs projects and what you're seeing is the hole. where your distributor should be the distributor if you think about it it's some sort of analog camshaft position sensor what we have here is your actual camshaft position sensor if you don't have a distributor you have one of these bad guys, he's being held. with four thousand fasteners good luck I'm not trying to remove it because I don't need to remove it and I don't feel like removing them on this particular Jeep right now one thing I will tell you about Sensor Fields, it is very possible to put them back 180°.
I did it myself during my formative years. I took one out to diagnose it. I tested it on the bench and confirmed it was fine and put it back facing forward. It was fun Chase and Diagnose because I had just confirmed that the cam position sensor was fine. This is one that will absolutely leave you stranded on the side of the road when these things start working. It seems like everything is wrong with your engine. It looks very similar. symptoms like a bad carburetor or something you know you're coughing you're spluttering you can't

keep

it on you have to have your foot on it to

keep

it on your computer doesn't know where the camshaft is and as a result it just doesn't know what to do if this already doesn't work, also if we're on the w JS you'll have to bear with me, your oil pressure sender gets easier and harder.
To get to now, we're looking at that same side of the engine, here's your old oil filter, that old Mopar 090 and on the older 4L model, it's hanging right here, you've got that big long Jam, well, remember the small? guy I showed you for the 4 ler the same thing in a WJ except it's all the way back there, you see. I'll put a little arrow now. I'm going to zoom out to give you a little context beyond our oil filter there. that's your oil filter, that's how far back she is, all friends, if you're in a WJ and you find that the crank position sensor is pretty easy, you want to get into the driver's side footwell and fold this carpet a little back and once.
If you do that, you'll be able to see this little access panel, this guy, right behind here, is the crank position sensor. The forward cable actually comes out the middle. Two 10 ms, you can take this guy out. back you need a couple of extensions on a universal, but you can get the little one there right now if you're not on a WJ, it's both easier and harder. What you'll have to do is crawl on your back here. go up under the Jeep, up here next to the hood is the crankshaft position sensor. Most people find it easier to undo the connector from above inside the engine bay and then undo the 11mm fastener from below to remove the sensor.
Well, let's talk a little. Obvious things: Find the power distribution block or fuse block and remove one of each type of component there. I have these relays here that are not that common. You can get them off the shelf, but it's not the kind of thing you're looking for. to have a line around this Jeep has 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 even this one is an 03 WJ seven of these so I'll stick with one of these omons maybe this big guy here tends to be like starters and things like that. You'll go inside the Jeep, you'll have a fuse block with some relays, some fuses, you'll want to get some spares out of those things.
Now I know specifically in WJ that the flasher relay may want. to understand what's here behind this fuse panel and there they are folks, those are the main sensors on the 4 ler that you'll need to know about from 84 to 2006, those are the big ones, the ones that will leave you on the side of the road, the ones you can take out easily and cheaply in the yard, help yourself, put them in a small bag, if you are really smart, you will search all the WK Grand Cherokees for one of those bags that came with your owner's manual.
Store all your sensors in that little Jeep brand bag. You can't buy a class like that. You just have to find it in a junkyard. This is what we bought today, friends, for $10 a piece. Throttle body sensors. 10 20 30, that's 30. Dollars so you don't get stuck on the side of the road. I'm fine with that if you really want to leave this one. You don't see as many problems with the map sensors as you do with the other two. get yourself your oil pressure sending unit, it's up to 40 bucks, get a cam and crank sensor, you're on what 60 bucks, make a deal with them to give you a bunch of these electrical parts for 10 bucks, 70 dollars, maybe another. five or 10 in that little bag I told you to look for for less than 100 dollars, you have a beautiful mentality because here's the thing, man, the last four ler came off the line in 2006, most of them came off the line way before that there aren't four new lers, there aren't even four intermediate lers, they are all old and just getting old, does that mean we shouldn't drive them if we send them all to the junkyard?
Do yourself a favor, know your limitations, don't go out in a 30 year old vehicle for a 300 mile round trip and don't carry a spare TPS, you're just begging to get stuck on the side of the road. Trust me buddy, someone who has been stuck on the side of the road by a faulty TPS. Ask me why I carry spares now. Very good friends. That's all. Want to talk about the elephant in the room real quick? That sweatshirt. she was using the order ofon that's incorrect that was a misprint but I'm not a wasteful guy so I still wear the sweatshirt in the garage to work the biggest news is that the sweatshirt is going on sale in the next few weeks so if you're interested in have your own 4L head gasket firing order sweatshirt.
I promise, I promise, I promise it will be your last. I printed wrong, stay tuned. I'll post them in about a week or two more for this video. That's all there is to it, what do you think all the spare parts are or did I miss some? I know there are some vehicle specific things we could probably pull out and if you want to list those things below, what did you guys pull out? It's a specific vehicle for the WJ and the ZJ.the XJ uh, is there anything you need to take out that's specific to the 2.5L that they put in the XJ?
How about for the 5.2 L and the 59 they put in the ZJ? Maybe those are videos that will help. I'm happy that I started with the four ler, although I always love to make a four ler video that unites us with Nuestras Raíces. Leave me that comment in a square box. Let me know what you think about it. Let me know what your surveys save you if you like the video like the one. Common sense video, subscribe to the channel, maybe check out our website with toolbox.com, as always, thanks for watching, see you next time.
