Is it Possible to Beat Super Mario 64 DS Without Mario?

If you've played Mario 64 DS, then you'll remember that Mario is required to unlock Luigi, as well as unlock power-ups and fight the final Bowser, but what if there was a way to finish the game without Mario? We'll find out if that's

I was able to get all the stars here except the last one for that. The hardest star to get here was the red coins because there was no easy way to get to these floating islands that happened to have the last two red coins that I need, I couldn't kick this board to get across and since I have no skills with the ds version from

64, long jumps and triple jumps. from the tower they didn't work either after messing around a bit, I accidentally grabbed the top of the board and realized that this might work after all, after a few tries I discovered that by gaining a little speed and jumping you can reach the arrow shaped island to get all the red coins after that I went on Peach's slide and both stars were an easy ride.

Next up was Jolly Roger Bay at first I was a little worried about the hundred coins because I knew I wasn't going to get all of them. the blue coins since you need the koopa shell to do that and I can't get the koopa shell without the other character since it's in this box, but I only worried because I know luckily the original jolly roger bay is very stingy with his coins. the ds game is much more generous, adding goombas in the cave and there are extra coins in the underground water, so I was pretty much set.

I got all the stars here except six and seven, six requires luigi and his invisible power-up, while seven requires wario and his metal. on I tried to swim perfectly towards the star, since you can do that in the original game, but I had no luck and there seemed to be some kind of invisible barrier. We'll come back to this stage later and see if we have more luck. At this point I decided to try to turn on the power switch while I can look towards the light while Yoshi, all that happened was that I fell through the sky without a brimmed cap on.

I tried to look up again only for the sky to call me. I perfectly angled Yoshi's triple jump to land right on top without a single wall jump or backflip and now it's time to take out Bowser or I guess we're not allowed in.

I was really starting to worry about this challenge at this point, so I went ahead and completed Sunshine Isles while I thought about what to do. The last idea I had was to try to get some stars in Big Boo's Hunt, but that didn't work even in this game, Yoshi can't eat or grind alcohol, which to this day still doesn't make sense, so unfortunately we're in It's a dead end. I can't go to Big Boo's lair. I can't get more stars than the levels I can access. I can't go to Bowser and I can't hit the switch to turn on the power-ups.

Now it's time to do some research so the first thing I did was search for mario 64 ds speed racing, what I found was Bowser's first battle as Yoshi and I thought "Okay this is exactly what I'm looking for " and then the video is literally him opening the door with mario first and then running back switching to yoshi and moving forward. I mean, technically I could do this since I wouldn't be entering a level with mario, but that's a little silly if you ask me, so I decided to enter. mario 64 ds speedrunning discord to see if anyone would know and I got a response from a guy who called a deal and said that unfortunately there is no known way to get past the 12 star gate with yoshi and that I should express yoshi specifically because you can to get it. passing that door with other characters using for example luigi in jolly roger bay room you can latch onto this pillar and line up using the seams of the level and follow that with a backflip to appear on top but like he said, this made.

It doesn't seem possible with Yoshi, in fact, now that I think about it, I might have an idea. Well, I think it's time to unlock some characters, so next up is Wario and now. We have another problem and that is, of course, this giant mirror. Yoshi can't do anything here, well it's pretty crazy to align Yoshi at a certain angle on the mirror pillar. He can make high and long jumps towards the wall with good momentum. go through and enter the mirror without using luigi and here is the trick to all this yoshi is the only character who was never meant to enter this level of chile boss, you can fight the boss with mario and wario using the caps, but for the first time Yoshi is present and after the fight against them, luckily the game doesn't crash either, so now we have access to Wario.

Before we continue, let's go ahead and unlock Mario, but no. We actually play as him, the only reason we do this is to prevent the game from crashing if we eventually fight Bowser because that's been known to happen when he's not unlocked and since we can use Warp with Yoshi, we can use exactly La Same tactic to get Bowser into the dark world. By doing this we were able to grab the red coin and switch stars pretty easily, so at this point a lot of big, crazy moves have been made for this challenge and the latest is unlocking Luigi.

So now we can go back to grabbing as many stars as possible, unlike Yoshi Wario who was able to hit the alcohol and while I was here, I also made the red coins on the star in the yard, but then I went to Big Boo's lair. I couldn't get on Luigi's box because Wario can't jump high enough, so I completed the first star to make the stairs open and then I tried to get to the top and realized that Wario's jump really is the worst I've ever been able to do. my way up no matter how hard I tried so I talked to a deal again and he mentioned that Luigi's cap will always appear on a certain star even before you unlock them since normally caps don't appear unless you unlock that character in this way.

The concept also occurs in the misty maze cave where before unlocking Wario you can take this cap off Dory to get a star. I found out that selecting star 3 was when Luigi's cap appeared in the back room of the house, so yeah, I'm about to unlock Luigi. while using a luigi cat before unlocking luigi, but anyway, once i passed luigi's big boo level, i was finally granted access to luigi, so it's time to head back down and see what other stars are possible to get back to the bomb battlefield that luigi could to get all the red coins, one hundred coins and even the five star where you shoot from the cannon to get the five secret coins, this took a while because I had to keep going up the mountain to grabbing one coin at a time, but alas, it was doable.

After that, I dove into Womp's fortress and finished off that Switch Star, since I can now break it with Luigi. Next up was Jolly Roger Bay and even now I still couldn't make the 6 star because there was no way to get past the cage without the power. -ups unlocked but star 7 is interesting because I can introduce you to our good friend called Water Storage, here's how it works: We start this star by selecting Yoshi with Luigi's hat and then you will break this box to reveal. the shell takes damage so you will be yoshi again and eat the shell before it disappears, then you will have to jump and throw the shell at just the right moment for yoshi to land on the shell in the water, this tricks the game into believing I was no longer in the water so I rode to the bottom and got off the shell so I could grab the star and after that I went back to the fresh and cold mountain and grabbed the remaining stars that I couldn't get before I swim too .

Interesting here, Big Boo's hideout was next on my list and I was able to do all the stars except 6, where you have to go to the secret eye room. I need the invisible power to do that, so it won't happen and around. This time I also cleared that level of the secret battle fort and that's all the stars we can get on the main floor, but what about the basement? We haven't even gone there yet and since I didn't fight the first Bowser, I don't. I don't have the key to get there, luckily there is another route that uses Yoshi, double jumping to this waterfall and kicking into the slot.

Here you can develop enough speed to enter the castle and land on the ground to fool the game into thinking you are not. If you're not in the water, then you'll just walk through the door and you'll be good to go, so now that we've drained the water and become Luigi again, we can go through the rest of these basement levels. First, it was a misty maze cave. I could grab every star. here except the third one and that's because you usually need warium metal to press the switch. Instead, I tried ground slamming it from above the water since ground slamming got me pretty deep before, but for some reason there's like an invisible force field. that prevents you from doing that, so it seems there is no other option than to use something called a block clip.

What I mean by this is that we're going to have to use Yoshi and hug this wall, then move the camera down and to the correct zoom. back up so it snags under the stage and lands in some water. At this point, we'll have to swim in these very specific directions to make sure we don't accidentally fall off the stage, and after a certain point, we'll jump. from the water I feel a door and kablam we are behind that cage now and the star is possible at this time I also visited the metal lid stage and I was able to make the red coins but not the mario balloon for obvious reasons the red The coins were a big pain without the metal cap.

I had to dive into the water dozens of times to hit these coins as the camera wouldn't cooperate and I had to guess where they were making it harder than necessary, but otherwise it was more than doable, nothing to really say about the land of deadly lava, except every star here was possible. After that I moved on to the land of shifting sand and every star was pretty easy except this red coin since I couldn't fly there with mario. I had to use Luigi and I was really struggling to reach him. I tried using backflips and always narrowly missed it, so I tried doing a backflip off the top of the pyramid and thatIt didn't work either.

My next idea was to use the cannon, so I opened that guy and was able to touch the coin this way, but it was impossible for me to survive afterwards thanks to this giant pile of quicksand. My last idea was to do a triple jump from the pillar, which seemed unlikely, but after dozens of attempts, I actually managed to do that and survive after getting all these stars, I got some other miscellaneous ones, like talking to the toad and both in the mode, and believe it or not you can actually get them both, the cage at the end may seem too high. jump and well that's because it is, but to get this red coin star requires a task trick called dip reset which allows Luigi to basically jump twice to get the star.

On the other hand, the turnaround star is a completely different story, usually. You need to use Mario to get on a balloon and wall jump to the top, but you can actually do this with Luigi. You start by spinning back to the switch and after activating it you'll simply do a backflip to the start and then do a long set. of slide go up this wall until you get close to the top time this is incredibly difficult by the way the only way I could do this was to spin my thumb through a and b then you will reach this platform and spin back again to that you can We will have enough height to cross and grab the star.

We're almost done with the basement, but I still have this 30-star door to go through, but as expected, we can't get through unless you're stumped with Mario, since I made a deal, he showed me a video that would allow me to enter this room and I was actually able to Basically did this myself, I used Yoshi to run in front of this bunny, then I had to grab him while he was lined up with this wall, after that I was able to go out of bounds and literally swim under the castle. After doing that for a while I jumped out of the water and had to feel my way around and look for Bowser's opening and voila we did it, the red coins and the change star were easy to grab as expected that the last stage of the basement was terrible docks, all stars were possible here, except star six, because I don't have access to the power-up. going through the cage now the jet stream star was interesting because you have to have the ship spawned for it to be possible without using wario's metal power up you can't just swim down and grab the star all you have to do is go.

I will tackle the wet and dry world first and all of these stars were easy to make including star six and that is the one behind the cage where you would need a power up. to pass, so why do I say this was easy?

Well, using Luigi, I pushed this block in just the right place, ran to the corner, zoomed the camera to the right and zoomed out, allowing me to clip out of bounds, so you have to swim carefully so you can charge into the part of the city level while staying out of bounds and at that point you can just swim to grab the cage star and once you get it you will be golden. Then I went to a tall tall mountain and all the stars here were pretty easy. A small and huge island also worked well, except for stars 3 and 4.

Koopa once again wants to compete with Mario, which we can't do and star 4 is not available unless you complete star 3. after that it was the snowman land all stars were doable except star 6 because you need the invisible power to place the star under the cage after that we have the tippy top to play next to get there adil sent me this really homework clip sickly skipping the 50 star gate entirely, he used wario on this pillar to gain speed with long jumps and managed to jump through the mirror, then ran towards wario's painting and clipped the bottom of that to be out of bounds. followed by cleverly kicking himself to a place where he could warp and end up over the rainbow.

Now, for this level, you can get the brick star with Wario with a well-timed long jump, but the red coin star was not so kind to With careful routing, you can grab all the red coins, but there are no way to return to the star later, since you can't fly and so, we have two levels to advance.
