iPhone 12 Review: Just Got Real!

May 30, 2021
Hi, what's going on here with mkbhd? This is the iPhone 12. I feel like we've all seen an iPhone before. At this point, this is a pretty familiar iPhone. We've seen the rounded corners, the notch, and the Lightning port, but there are a couple of key changes this year that are firsts for the iPhone, so I've been using this iPhone 12 for a while since my impressions video and it's my iPhone favorite mainly because of this design, but if you are considering purchasing one, there are a few things. You should know that now I'm going to make a separate video about the pro in this sweet blue color.

I think it's the best color, but these two phones are very similar, the exact same size, like a case that works for one and works for the other. cameras almost same screen same battery same charge, but there are a couple of things that only apply to the pro and I'll go over them in that video, but let's start with the 12 with this new design. I love this super flat design. It is so flat that it is not the typical almost flat where the screen is flat to the edges and then it curves on the same edge and they call it like 2.5 d no, this is flat, as if the phone is a little thinner and a little lighter than last year but that doesn't worry me as much but the square sides are actually the most efficient way to pack those internal parts into the phone as efficiently as possible and I think it looks and feels super premium and modern on top of all that now this kind of red but also salmon type sometimes it's a red version of the product after seeing it in person I probably wouldn't choose this one I would choose the blue or the black one but yeah those aluminum rails are everything , they are easier to grip, maybe a little less comfortable at first, but hey, the buttons are clickable, the power button is a little bigger, it is still ip68 waterproof, you have the 5g antenna cut out in the right side in some regions, which Trust me, I'll get to that in a second and yeah, I

just

like holding this phone now, if you put a case on it, I guess a lot of that doesn't matter as much, you'll notice it less obviously, but equal. some cases are flattening their dimensions for the iPhone 12 to make it again easier to grip, harder to drop and speaking of dropping, all of these new iPhones come with something new on the front called a ceramic shield and this is basically this type of hardened specialty. glass with a glass structure inside and it's on the front of these phones over the screen and it's supposed to offer four times better drop protection, so basically shatter protection, which is great, but I usually don't care as much or plus scratch resistance. micro scratches that your phone accumulates over time and the thing about scratch resistance is that it is generally inversely proportional to break resistance, so if you think about it, the softer something is, the less likely it is to break. break, but it is easier to scratch it and vice versa.

More Interesting Facts About,

On the contrary, the harder something is, the less likely it is to scratch it, but the more brittle it is and the more breakable it becomes, I see the headline "better drop protection" and that's great, but I'm not dropping my phone to find out. if it works, I'm sure people are already on it, I have no idea how they'll get to that 4x number, but it's okay, all I know is that I already have a small cutout on my screen on the left side, which It's like that. sad but that's probably outside level six, no idea how it happened but I feel like the iPhone isn't significantly more scratch resistant than before of course Zach will probably tell us the truth so if it breaks a lot except when it falls, I'll see, that would be good, but I feel like a lot of things that fall are coincidences, like if I drop the phone in a certain way, it will definitely break and if I drop the phone in another way, it will probably It won't be like that.

I don't know, I don't want to worry too much about using the case if you want to use a screen protector if you

real

ly want to, I'm

just

going to live my life so it's possibly the biggest one. The external hardware feature of the new iPhones is Magsafe and I think it has bigger implications for the future of the iPhone, but right now Magsafe is the new standard optional magnetic charging accessory on the back, right behind the Apple logo, so making it the number one Magsafe accessory. What Apple sells is the puck charger, by the way, it doesn't come with a brick, so if you buy the charger for 40 bucks, make sure you have a USB charging brick, but yeah, you just put it on the back of the phone and do it. you line up with the magnets you get used to where it sits right above the apple logo and that's fine this charges at 15 watts while every other wireless charger on the

iphone

still charges at seven and a half watts and a couple of faqs more about this number. one, yes it is still charging qi so you can still charge the iPhone 12 with other wireless chargers and you can charge other phones with the Magsafe puck if you like that number two, I have noticed the durability issue with Magsafe leaving marks on the iPhone. that on mine too, but I don't think it will become a problem long term, it just seems to get erased every time, like you remember how the homepod left these little white stained rings on certain wooden tables, which is kind of understandable. because not all tables are the same, but I think I hope that Apple has probably tested this a hundred thousand times and probably determined that it's not a problem with the way they did it, so it should be fine and then number three.

I was getting a lot of questions about this. Yes, you can charge Magsafe through most non-Magsafe cases as long as they are thin enough and even that magnet will work on some thin cases, so I didn't

real

ly have any non-Magsafe ones. There are cases here to try, but of course, channel sponsored dbrand sent a grip case and I can confirm that it is thin enough to work well with a Magsafe charger as if it were a Magsafe charger and yes, all the other benefits of a case with protection against grip, all. It still applies, so since I know most people end up looking for a good one, I'll leave a link to this case below.
Now at the beginning of this Magsafe bit I said something, I said it was optional and it is for now but I feel like we can all see where this is going i.e. Apple is slowly moving towards making a portless iPhone , which I think is a separate video, but the bottom line is your solution to wirelessly and conveniently charging a phone that doesn't have a port is going to be magsafe, this thing here, so it's not surprising, but I guess it's well the couple of accessories they've made so far aren't bad, there's a normal case of course that you can continue stacking things through, there's a kind of weird clear version of the case, for some reason there's a wallet that I mentioned that it doesn't have very strong magnets, but if you think about it, it's not that peculiar that the only accessory they chose to make outside of the case is a wallet like, let me know if there's any flaw in this series of logic, so Apple wants to get rid of the port on the iPhone and move to fully wireless charging for everything at a certain time, maybe next year, whatever, so you see the future.
Every now and then this particular headline comes up, which is: People who use wallet cases can't charge their iPhone wirelessly, so they can't charge the iPhone at all, so Apple needs to invent a way for them to people who use wallet cases continue to charge their phone so invent an accessory which is a removable wallet so you can charge the phone and when you don't need to charge it you can put the wallet back in, that seems to work like I said that's it but Nowadays battery life is optional. These phones have actually been pretty good, but not noticeably better than last year.
In fact, they actually have a slightly larger higher resolution screen and a smaller physical battery, so it's pretty impressive that the phone still performs well. You can turn it off in a day. with six hours of screen on time or just a lot of heavy use, but this is not new with this full-size iPhone, if you want a real battery champion, you can go for the larger phone, although the best new piece of the iPhone 12 is The new display definitely goes from a 720p LCD display with larger bezels that was really easy to make fun of to this much better and even slightly larger 6.1-inch 1080p OLED display, it's like night and day, It's basically on par with the pro, which is actually pretty.
I'm surprised by only a slightly lower maximum brightness, it's now 60 hertz again and while that's a feature that's missing right now on an 800 phone in 2020, I was actually hoping you were thinking pros would get 120 hertz screens. year, but obviously none of them did, which is a shame, but let's be honest, they probably saw it as a battery saving measure since this phone also just got 5g, so let's talk about 5g. I love and hate 5g right now, so this motto is Apple. and I guess the carriers 2 really keep insisting that 5g just got real 5g just got real right now 5g just got real last time I checked like this year I

review

ed like 30 phones with 5g so clearly 5g already exists but there's a reason They say it this way, so first of all I made a video about 5g where I went to a 5g area testing it, explaining it and showing what's good about it and what its limitations are.
I'll leave it linked right under the like button if you want to see it catch up on that but the bottom line is it's really promising but it's still being built right now but the carriers and I guess Apple really like the message that 5g became real because now that all the new iPhones have 5g built in, there are about to be millions and millions and millions more people walking around with 5g compatible phones in just a few months and when that happens it tends to accelerate development , that somehow makes it real, which I understand, but so do the operators.
I would really like you to upgrade to their 5g plan please, but we have to remember that 5g in 2020 has its ups and downs, like this iPhone 12 I'm using here has Verizon 5g, which surprisingly in my area is not millimeter wave. It's not ultra wideband, but it can still give me about 20 faster upload and download speeds, but 5g radios also consume quite a bit of power and the more time you spend on 5g, the more battery you use. Apple has put a lot of thought into this of course so their solution and you may have seen it on stage during the announcement is called smart data mode and it basically tries to only use 5g when you really need it to save battery so When you are in a 4G area you are on 4G speeds everything. it works with lte, no problem, you are fine, it will feel normal when you are in a 5g area and you are doing a lot of things that require a lot of bandwidth, you are downloading a lot of videos and music, you are in sync and clear HD, you are doing a lot high bandwidth things that will use 5g and that will make that experience a lot better, but if you're in a 5g area but you don't really do anything that benefits from 5g, then your phone will die. and stick with 4g and as Verge reported it will actually still show you the 5g indicator in the corner but you will get 4g speeds which we will probably find but that also explains this kind of strange result on the speed test so look my opinion.
I understand? The best technologies are supposed to be invisible, like you shouldn't even notice that they work. You are going to download something while you walk. You are in a 5g area. Boom. 5g turns on your downloads and then turns off. to save battery, kind of like a promo on the ipad pro, it goes up to 120 hertz when you're on the go and gaming and using it, but when you're not, you're just sitting on the home screen or watching a video, it will. it goes down to 24 hertz to save battery so it's not there when you don't need it, it's there when it helps you it's just strange that all the messages have been in your face 5g 5g 5g 5g 5g so yeah I would say no No buy this phone now because you want to get a 5g phone but if you get it now maybe it will be a good advantage if you are in a 5g area or in the future when you end up in a 5g. where you'll be able to use that's great, okay, the new iPhone equals the best new camera ever seen on an iPhone, sure, sure the iPhone 12 has a slightly updated dual camera system with a standard and an ultrawide, the standard it has a slightly wider aperture at f 1.6 instead of f 1.8 and to be honest there isn't much difference in camera as it just isn't equal to the pixel, they aren't really doing anything too drastic if it isn't broken, Don't really fix it.
The hardware improvements are almost impossible to notice in normal photos, but they will allow you to get an improvement in extreme cases, in the most difficult scenarios of taking photos and videos, so, as thehandheld in low light, it will be better. Night mode will be better. Autofocus will be fast. moving subjects super high dynamic range shots, like shooting directly into the sun thanks to smart hdr3 stuff like that, other than that they still look like iPhone photos i.e. some of the best and most consistently sharp photos of any smartphone, so it's not a Disappointer, but the iPhone video, while firmly in a league of its own, is like every time I try a new iPhone camera, it's just that the video camera is so much better and people care a lot for the video, they take a lot of videos, so you would want to know, yes, the iPhone takes great videos and that despite not recording 8k and not having a huge new sensor or anything so crazy, it is very well tuned and very reliable, but I want to save my full analysis of that for the pros video because I think pros even care more about video topics and potentially there's even new sensor hardware in the 12 pro max, so it might be interesting to see my Only knock: There seems to be more flare in low-light video, like just a ton of little orbs for each little point light source, but it's still very usable, although now you may have heard of Dolby Vision HDR.
These new iPhones are the first cameras, the only cameras in the world that record high dynamic range 4K Dolby Vision video and that's amazing. The hdr video is amazing. higher brightness, more brightness, deeper shadows, overall better images, even better perceived quality, i love hdr but here's the thing: dolby vision is just a dolby hdr standard or format and there are other hdr standards that have came to light that you may have heard of, hdr10 is one of them and that some other smartphones have started allowing you to record, you may have a smartphone in your pocket right now that is already capable of recording hdr10 videos , but the problem with new formats is always compatibility, which is why some televisions are HDR10 certified and others are not screens. they are adobe vision certified, some are not, so you can look at the screen, the video that you take with the

iphone

and it is dolby vision certified and it looks amazing and if you send this video to another iphone 12 it will look amazing on that iphone, but as soon as you upload it to twitter or instagram or tick tock or something at this point, even on youtube, it doesn't show up as hdr on most people's screens, it goes back to sdr, but the big problem here again is something like this like 5g because there are about to be so many iPhone 12s in the world, there are about to be millions of new devices and new people recording tons of HDR videos and looking to share them, so now there are more incentives for places and apps like Twitter and Instagram. tick tock to support hdr so maybe the tagline should have been hdr it just got real anyway the rest of the iphone is pretty familiar and that's a good thing for most people ios 14 we've all seen it Ya, it's familiar although there are a couple of bugs and apps that will probably be updated very soon face id hasn't changed at all, even the performance is familiar as there is nothing as new as a high refresh rate.
Inside is the new a14 bionic, which is one of the first five-nanometer chips in any device. a more powerful CPU and GPU and it's paired with 4 gigs of RAM and everything is great, but that's mainly due to the speed that you will notice later when the phone is 2, 3 or 4 years old and hopefully still running feel very fast, but fundamentally there really isn't much difference between these iPhones and the performance that you get this year compared to what last year wasn't a little bit faster, but yeah, even at a slightly higher price of $830, that is the actual price shown on Apple's website.
The carrier's price at first is a bit misleading, but even at that price, yes, this phone with best in class cameras, best in class performance, much better display, is pretty good, this is the one that most people should purchase. see version for those of you lazy people I know just went to the chapters and skipped to this one. It's a great phone. The best new parts are definitely the screen, which was a big problem from last year. Why did I do it? Put it this way: the screen is better, the battery life is about the same, the cameras are a little better, the build quality and design is also an incredible improvement and Magsafe is optional for now, but you better start Get used to it and the worst part is the price. it's a little higher because also 5g is built into the phone even for people who are never going to use it, but with that being said, there you have it, great job by Apple and definitely stay tuned for the

review

of the pro.
I want to delve deeper into what he does. He's a professional, you know, as a YouTuber. I think about this a lot as a content creator. Am I a professional iPhone user? I don't know, there's a lot to talk about there, but that was the iPhone 12. Thanks for watching. very soon because you know Tech Toby, guys, it's over, I'll catch you on the next one, back, peace and so on.
