iPad OS Impressions: They Listened!

Jun 04, 2021
Hey guys mkbhd, welcome back to your ongoing coverage of the world's most densely populated keynote, wwdc 2019, and I'm going to say Loki, my favorite ad from that entire keynote was

ipad

os 13. See if you remember there . There were a lot of complaints and feelings in my iPad Pro review and many others about how this is clearly the best iPad ever. Its incredible hardware. Excellent screen. Excellent battery. Excellent chip, but it's still a little held back by the iOS software and still feels like it. just an

ipad

, well let's fast forward a couple of weeks to now until that crazy keynote happened and now we have an update along with ios 13 specifically for ipads, it's ipad os, now it's not a completely new operating system, it's still ios 13 for ipad, but this ipad directly addresses many of the complaints and those features that it was missing and that in some ways puts it at the speed of a much more impressive computer, so in some ways this software update seems which saves my ipad pro, so let's break this down.

First of all, put down the widgets on your home screen, so I never thought I'd say that about iOS, but technically you have them here, at least on the left side in a vertical scrolling list, but these are the ones that were on the side of your iPhone's home screen, but you can pin them next to the rest of your smaller icons and

they

go a long way toward making it feel a little more like a real computer, you know that, and I actually think

they

open up many possibilities. up with the widgets that you can put there, they're always available, there's a lot of information visible and a lot of one-touch functions if you have some important apps on there, so I'm a big fan of that and then there's the improvements to multitasking, so again, a lot of this is learning gestures and things like that, there's kind of a learning curve to them, but you can have apps side by side like you've always done, but now you can have two instances of the same app side by side. side by side. side by side so notes next to notes or safari next to safari is one of those things that I didn't know I'd like but it turns out to be quite useful and then of course there's also the swiping over apps and the whole system of gestures that This goes with that, so there is multitasking between sliding windows and quick switching between them and everything stays in memory and is always remembered, so if you have multiple apps and spaces next to each other, you can switch Between those pairs of apps, it's pretty impressive.

More Interesting Facts About,

I feel like this is one of those features that you couldn't use at all to start with, but slowly start introducing them into your workflow until you get really good at them and then they feel irreplaceable and then, well, remember when I said in the original iPad review. Having a USB C port makes the dream workflow seem like you know it - just plug your camera directly into that port or plug a card reader directly into the import and then start editing your photos or whatever you're into. doing, you couldn't do that on the iPad. and it was a shame that that wasn't supported until now on the ipad os 13.

Now you can plug in a flash drive or plug the memory directly into the ipad and import it into your apps and start working. Obviously this feels like one of the features they have. I should have had it from the beginning, but now that it's here, thanks finally, that's originally what I expected when I saw USBC on the iPad Pro, so now let's take advantage of there also being this column view and the files app that's starting to behave a lot. more like a browser with the ability to quickly copy and paste files and compress files and folders into zip files.

I feel like also signing a lot of documents will be a lot easier now that you can do this, so file management is a lot better and then also the desktop. navigation in class, so that was another one of my big complaints about the ipad, was the inability to use several major desktop sites because they all treated safari on the ipad like safari on the iphone, like it was just another mobile browser, so I was quite impressed and happy to see Full Desktop Class Navigation now, so the first thing I had to try was Google Drive, which is now fully functional.
It's not perfectly smooth, but it works, which is great, and then YouTube desktop and Creator Studio work too, so things like adding end cards and updating descriptions. Many of the things you would do on the desktop now work perfectly in the web browser. This is literally one of the things I would carry around on a MacBook Pro to be able to do because I don't trust doing those things on my phone, there's also a download manager in Safari now, so you can use that for sites like Dropbox and Box. com and Google Drive to download files natively.
That's amazing to me because the ultimate team I play for at New York Empire we put up game footage in its entirety. shared folder on Google Drive, but I couldn't download it from Google Drive to iPad for offline viewing. I was only able to stream, so now I can download it directly to the iPad and watch it as a normal file. It's great and then. There are a bunch of other little improvements, so things like the keyboard, every time you type something, you can pinch it and it becomes this iPhone-sized keyboard and you can move it wherever you want and then type with one hand or slide the finger, it's not like that. the nicest thing in the world, but the fact that you can do it with a quick gesture is quite nice and also, if you use the Apple Pencil a lot to mark, another feature that is super useful is that now you can use the pencil to take a screenshot.
By swiping up from the corner you will immediately be in markup mode and you can start drawing on any screenshot you just took that is clean and then the icing on the cake is another new feature called sidecar so if It has a Mac and an iPad as The name suggests that it will allow you to use the iPad as a second screen for Mac, so I saw this demo on wwdc. I was literally two clicks away in display settings and suddenly this MacBook Pro has a second screen that supports Apple Pencil and with the pencil's super low latency you can start drawing and editing.
I imagine this will be useful for artists and people who do a lot of Photoshop work and pen stuff. I don't know how to replace those Wacom tablets that are so specialized. which use a lot of workflows right now, but as responsive as it is and as good as it looks in beta, it looked really promising. Oh, and let me tell you the improved latency of the stylus, they said on stage, which went from 20 milliseconds to 9 milliseconds. I didn't know if I would notice that, but after trying it it's incredibly fast. It now looks and feels like you're typing directly on the iPad screen.
I don't know if they could reduce the latency. this and if I notice, it's super fast. Do all these things move the iPad Pro from just another iPad to something of a computer replacement for more people? As you can imagine, the answer depends on what you do. your computer, but for me, if I'm not editing videos on my laptop, the answer is yes, pretty much everything I do between desktops as far as mobile work goes, I can now do it on the ipad pro and that web browser Mobile being treated like a desktop web browser is an important part of that.
I also really like the widgets on the more compact home screen and the improvements in multitasking, and all this for me legitimately saves the ipad, so today, as I said, I don't edit videos on I don't do it on desktop computers anymore , today I'm going to take my laptop out of my backpack and just take the iPad Pro. We'll see how long this lasts, but I really feel like I can do everything I used to. What to do, I don't know whether to be mad at Apple for holding back these features and finally delivering them later to blow us away or if I should be really happy for Apple for listening to our feedback and updating the iPad with all these features for what we asked for, but what What I do know is that the improvements they have made to the iPad operating system are stellar, I think when they get to the iPad in its final form because it is still an early beta and it will be public. beta soon, but when they finally start arriving on people's iPad Pros, you'll notice there will be major improvements.
I think I'll really like them. I like it a lot either way. That was it. Thanks for watching this video. the next peace with you
