Apr 30, 2020
Sunny Lenarduzzi: You may or may not know that when I started my career, I was actually a journalist or a reporter and I interviewed a lot of people on camera and I was on camera for a long time. Cameras do weird things to people, so I wanted to break down all my years of experience into four ways to

instantly

look

better on camera. A quick tip before we dive in. There is nothing more uncomfortable than seeing someone who is uncomfortable on camera. Your viewers and audience want you to

look

relaxed so they can sit back, relax, and enjoy your content.

You got it. The first thing that will

instantly

make you look better on camera is something I call the "S&B Combo." There's a funny thing that happens when you get nervous and sometimes you forget to smile and you also forget to blink. The reason why

video

is so powerful for your business, your brand, and is a really important part of our world now, is because it allows you to build a trust factor with the person watching it. But people don't trust you if you look like a serial killer. Is this what you look like when you're very, very nervous in front of the camera and don't know what to do with your hand?

That was so hard! Keep your mouth relaxed, think about something happy, smile and it sends a real physical reaction through your body to just breathe and that makes you look more comfortable and more confident on camera. The reason

video

is so important to building your business and brand is that it builds trust, so you want to make sure you don't have serial killer vibes and that you have trustworthy vibes on camera. How do you implement this when you're not used to it yet? All you have to do is take care of yourself. What I did when I was first working in media is I would do a lot of different exercises in front of the camera, interview friends and family in front of the camera, see what my presence was really like and select the things that I liked and then work in the things I didn't like.

Don't be embarrassed, don't be embarrassed, it's not

natural

to talk on camera, which is why it feels weird at first. Bosses, let's have a moment of honesty. Have you ever looked at your images and thought, “I look a bit like a serial killer”? If so, write serial killer in the comments below. I am one of those people. The second way to instantly look better on camera is to stop thinking of the camera as a camera. One thing I did when I started talking on camera was to visualize or put a photo of a friend or family member on my camera, so it made me feel like I was talking directly to them. .

It makes things a lot easier, makes you feel a little more comfortable and calm, and makes you remember that you are not talking to millions or hundreds of people, but rather you are talking to one person. This is how you build a connection with the video, this is how you build a connection with the camera. If you can visually think of someone in your head that would make you feel comfortable, maybe it's your mom, your best friend, your boyfriend or your husband, whoever it is, think about them. If it's even easier for you, place the image close to the camera so it feels like you're having that one-on-one conversation.
Comment below, let me know who you're thinking about when you feel most comfortable and confident in front of the camera. The third way to instantly look better on camera (I'm going to defend this one) is your posture. When you feel uncomfortable, your tendency is to protect yourself and move your body inward. That makes you cringe and look down and not make eye contact. You don't trust people who don't make eye contact with you, so when you're in a video and you can't look directly into the lens, which is actually looking another human being in the eye, you come off as shady and untrustworthy.
First up is the eye contact part, which means you want to have your chin up, buttercup, and you also want to make sure your shoulders are back. So if I feel uncomfortable in front of the camera, this is what it looks like. I am serious and knowledgeable and you should probably listen to me... The most important thing is that you are looking directly into the lens. Do you feel like I'm talking directly to you right now? If so, let me know in the comments below. That's what good camera presence does, it creates this kind of connection, but you need to make eye contact to achieve it.
The last way to look really comfortable on camera is preparation. What I used to do is when I was going to live somewhere in the middle of nowhere and there were a lot of distractions around me, I would actually put my notes in my back pocket and also give another copy of my notes. to my cameraman or I would record it somewhere in and around the camera on the tripod. I usually didn't even end up using those notes, but the security and comfort of knowing that they were somewhere I could look in case I froze, which had happened before, made me feel much safer and more comfortable and I It made me present myself in a much more comfortable way.
Preparation is key, so knowing what you want to talk about and also keeping in mind that you are an expert in whatever topic you are talking about, so you need to know that and encourage yourself, and that is part of preparation. Pep convinces yourself so that you know: "I know what I'm talking about, I've been talking about this for years and years and years, if someone asked me at a party what I do or what I'm passionate about." ”, you could go on for days. It's no different when you talk to the camera. So prepare, prepare, prepare, and the only thing I will say about preparation...
I am often asked this question and many of you bosses have asked me... Should I get a teleprompter and should I read the notes when Am I filming my videos? In fact, I don't think you should do it because it makes you look much stiffer and you're more focused on getting the words right on the screen than on looking

natural

and comfortable. What I do instead is when you're making a pre-produced video, the great thing is to film it in small sections. That way you won't try to memorize an entire script and go over it all at once;
I can't even do that. What I do instead is break it down into an introduction, which is a few sentences, I know them, I know the essence of what I want to say. I film it, if I make a mistake, I film it again. Now I present to you a challenging boss. The only way to feel comfortable in front of the camera is to look on camera a lot.
