Beth: I was worried about having four kids in an apartment in New York and being cooped up in the winter with nothing to do. So we decided to create a real playground in the back of our apartment. Everyone: Welcome to our apartment! Aly: The 4,000-square-foot loft takes up the entire floor of a residential building. It has a 50-foot-wide great room with 11-foot-high ceilings, 14 windows, and a perfectly framed view of the Empire State Building. It was in the large chef's kitchen where we found the family's biggest splurge: a 17-foot custom concrete kitchen island. Beth: One of my favorite things in this apartment is this cement countertop, and they came with big cement mixers, built the structure, and then poured the concrete.

We designed it to be able to accommodate eight or ten children and then it also adapts very well to adult dinners. Since I love to entertain, it makes sense that this would be my biggest splurge. Aly: Behind the large kitchen and living room is the children's wing. The hallway connecting the four brothers' rooms is completed with the family's most prized possession: a zip line. Beth: This

zipline

is our most prized possession. We decided we wanted a zip line and worked with our architect to figure out how to do it. Lucy: When my little brother was very little, we would take a little bag, it was canvas, we would hook it up and put him in the bag.

It wasn't very safe, but it was fun. This

zipline

is my most prized possession. It is the most unique thing in the entire house. Definitely, 100%. Outside of my room, I spend most of my time on this. Aly: Each child was able to choose a unique feature for their room. Beth: In the late summer of 2012, I got on a plane with my four young children in tow. We were leaving a large suburban house in Menlo Park and moving to Manhattan. About an hour into the flight to JFK, I started to panic and, partly to ease my moving anxiety and partly to entertain my kids during the flight, I tasked them with drawing what their dream room would look like.

Luckily, my kids are super creative and had a ton of ideas, many of which we were able to make come true. We looked for an architect and interviewed a few who thought we were a little crazy, and then we found Studio DB, who took on the project and were very excited to execute it. Lucy: We have my beautiful rock wall. Very funny. Aly: I sat down with the kids to learn the inspiration behind their designs. And how did you choose a climbing wall as the highlight of your bedroom? Lucy: Because I love climbing, I'll climb anything.
Aly: Okay, let me see, we have to test your skills. Am I too big for this wall or should I try climbing? Lucy: No way, you should definitely climb it, come on. Aly: I did it! Lucia: You did it! Do you want to try jumping? Aly: No way, José. The brothers' bedrooms are linked by a tunnel that passes above each room. These are some pretty interesting

digs

, what makes this room so special? Catherine: The monkey bars. You know, you have those few adults who say, "Oh, I'm too old, I can't do anything," and then you have those who are just going to go out and stand on their hands.
Aly: I love it. Catherine: Being backwards. Aly: Oh my gosh, look at this cool room. This is amazing. Is this a world map? Alex: It's a map of the world. I loved and still love maps. Aly: What is your favorite place in the world? Alex: New York. Aly: Good answer, does it have anything to do with you being able to come

home

to the coolest apartment in New York City? Alex: Yes, that is an important factor. Aly: Alex's room is also

home

to a very special feature: the best seat in the house. It is a personalized hammock in the child's tunnel that hangs over his bedroom.
Alex even has his own ladder to get there. Are you sure this can help me? Alex: Oh yeah. Aly: I'm much bigger than you. Alex: Oh yeah. Aly: Do you pinky promise? Alex: Yes. Aly: Above Caspian's room is the entrance to a spiral

slide

that leads to the press room. Lucy: This is our game room. Is awesome. Caspian: It has a slide. Lucy: Most impressive slide ever. You can get on it, get off it, get on it. One of the fun things about this slide is that you can go up from the outside and now I feel like I'm the king of this house.
Aly: But the children don't have full control of the house. Welcome to mom's master bedroom. Beth: I'd like to say this is my sanctuary, but that would be stretching it a bit. Almost every time I come in, there are one or two extra kids in my bed and a few in the bathtub. Lucia: Very funny. Beth: But come to my secret place. So this is my studio. When I really want to be alone and not listen to anyone else, this is the best place in the house. I have two doors on each side that block noise from the rest of the house.
Bye bye! Aly: Now that mom is in her quiet space, it was time to unleash my inner child. Lucy: Aly, you have to try this! Aly: Now is it my turn? Lucy: Yes, it's your turn. Aly: Uh oh, are you going to push me down? Lucia: Definitely. Aly: Okay, let's see. Three, two, one. Both: Ready, set, set. Aly: I'm tired. I have to go home. Alright, you guys blew me away today. Thanks for the funniest day ever. Have fun, bye guys!
