Industrial Design Professor Critiques Student/Grad Portfolios

Jun 09, 2021
things, these things here, no one is going to read them, so it's something we need to consider now in terms of the form. I wonder how you came up with this shape. I think it's good but I think it needs a little refinement, so let's get to the appropriate thing real quick, so let's get back to procreating. If we look here, this forms a sort of ellipse, but it's not quite an ellipse. I don't believe it. This should It can be a perfect ellipse or it should be a circle or something else and then again, there's a bump here on the surface and there's also a little bump here if you look at the shadows and the highlights that you need to work on.

To refine that surface, one thing I will say that's good is that because this is for blind people, it's good that it's hard to hold it in the wrong orientation even if you can't see it, so what I mean by that is you. I have a change of material on the back here and then that wraps around the bottom, so it would be very difficult to hold this thing upside down, which I respect and appreciate that you put thought into it and thought about what's next for this piece. here and the way it comes to a point creates a lot of focus on this area here and even the way you've rendered it does it because you have the edge of this highlight hitting the surface directly and it kind of creates a lot of improper lighting. pay attention to that area, so I think this should probably be a little bit more rounded or maybe straighter or something like that.

More Interesting Facts About,

Another thing is that the

design

right now feels too much like a pricing gun or something that I don't know how I do that necessarily, but I think because it's so organic, it feels a little bit like it needs some refinement in that sense. and what I was talking about with the reflections and the surface the same can be said for the silhouette here. I mean it's not very clear what the surfaces do and I think they need a bit more refinement and I think if you stick with more geometric shapes it will help elevate the

design

a bit, something that should The mention is that Olivier is really good at designing in that kind of elemental style.

This was a project that he did for my class and this is a really interesting design, but I think what hurts is that it's really cool, but no one. I'm going to read it, this doesn't have any kind of visual speed, so all the work that you've done that I know you did that talks about this type of use case is lost. These are also really cool sketches, so find out how. to Munich ate this and it might end up being via video, in fact it will probably be via video, this is also a little off here this light so look around for some tutorials which I think will give you information on how to do lightning. specific for LEDs and stuff, foam binocs, you probably have some, just search online how to do it on YouTube, okay, overall Olivier has some really good ideas and really good thoughts, the only thing is he doesn't really express it in your presentation, so I think.

It would be in your best interest to work on the live matrix and I have a lot of respect for the fact that you went through the entire product development cycle here, where you have an application that you designed and put some thought into it. on how all of these things would fit together, there are some really good ideas here, really nice models, now it's just a matter of expressing the functionality which I think was really compelling in this project which isn't shown here yet, so next up is Karen Wayne Karen . I believe Wayne is entering his final year of Industrial Design at CCS.
She was also one of my first

student

s, so one thing that's really great about Karen is that she is willing to take big risks with her designs and really does a lot of research to understand. how the product will fit into a broader scope, but really her biggest asset is that she has excellent craft skills, excellent drawing skills, and is once again willing to take risks with her designs, which I have a lot of respect for, so let's look at them . We have a micro sense here, this is really overflowing, so let's review technical skills, so technical skills have a cool presentation style.
These sketches are not your best sketches. I've seen you do better. This is a good sketch. One thing to keep in mind with sketches. or models or anything is that you're going to be judged by your worst sketch, your worst rendering, your worst 3D model, your worst project, so that's something to consider when you're doing this design work, so technical skills are hello good. I know they're good but these sketches need help and I know you can do better and this render helps so it's a bit overflowing here, once again look for the YouTube tutorials I talked about in the other one and in the In other parts of this video, let's look at the troubleshooting stuff.
Well, then it's a microscope. Well, those are real microscope slides and then these are kind of artistic watercolors. That is interesting. This looks great. I like that you actually went. through the prototypes and you created real slides that are really beautiful, so it's amazing, this is a beautiful shot here, very convincing, however the only problem is that this hand here that hand looks like a zombie hand or something because the render color is making it look blue-green like it's dead, so maybe you'll work on fixing that. I think you should put this particular image earlier in the process so you can understand what's happening and you should also put a person using it even if it's just a prototype somewhere earlier in the presentation because it wasn't very clear to me how it works this in terms of design.
I think it's actually quite nice proportionally. I think this is a really nice touch for this type of tie dye effect. to mirror the slides, I understand that the slides are projected onto this surface. I don't really understand why there is a person painting, although one thing I really like is that this representation is in perspective, which is amazing. I think you need more. Images like this that are really evocative and interesting and I think you should make the use case a little clearer and that could be through a video or it could be through a series of images showing how it works and things like the flow of the next project. ok, I've actually designed a lot of faucets, so this will be interesting.
In fact, I've also seen this project before and made some criticisms of it. Okay, so when you're generating water like this, you want to put some type of aeration or bubbles in it, otherwise it just looks like a sheet of glass, that would be a tip I have for you. Technical skills are good. There are a lot of really good models from auto manufacturing exploration here. I think it could be made bigger and clearer, these sketches are decent, but they are not the best, so better sketches. Here is the big problem. I don't see, I don't fully understand how this design relates to your use case, so you obviously did some level of user research.
It's basically Basically a faucet that helps with babies. I guess it's like bathing them in the sink. I would assume it's something I've ever heard of and that doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but hey, that's the use case I don't do. I don't understand how this super organic shape relates to that and I also don't understand how the super organic shape relates to Google's design language, so if you look at these faucets here, they seem to be much more in line with the kind of friendly and approachable of Google. homeware design language, electronics, so which ones have you chosen for me?
I don't quite understand it, so let's get into it. There is a superficial issue happening around the handle here, where the handle meets the main body, which needs help. I think having the faucet pointing down like this. I remember you mentioned that it has a functional purpose but it's not shown anywhere in the presentation, so you need to show that there is a touch screen here. Great, this area here is a little strange. It draws a lot of attention because it has a lot of visual mass in that area and it's also a little strange in the sense that it's unfamiliar and the surface needs more refinement, so normally, even when you're doing organic surfaces, there still needs to be something like As a kind of skeleton, there usually needs to be some kind of skeleton with a similar geometric shape, some kind of rational surface behind it, so for example you have what are essentially arks to form the beak here and this faucet, you'll still want to do that.
For the other designs that are hyper-organic, that's fine, so I think that pretty much covers it. I think we have some good designs here. There is a chance that you guys will trade in about two months to see how you progressed if you don't. do any work that will be very sad. I understand that at least one of you got internships so congratulations on that and I'm really excited to see your progress and I hope this was helpful if there's anything that's unclear about this review please. just let me know in the comments and I'll add more clarity and more definition on what I mean by certain things and thanks for tuning in guys if you like this video don't forget to subscribe it's definitely encouraging and helps me a lot. thank you for almost a thousand subscribers, which is really amazing, we have grown from 100 subscribers two months ago to almost a thousand, so thank you all so much for subscribing, thank you for watching the videos, I really appreciate it a lot.
