Mmm, would you like chili? -Yes.-One of the reasons why Ruzaina is so great (laughs) is that she is dedicated to making pop chilies. - Oh yeah! - Let's pop the chilies. - Health. (upbeat ska music) However, they are very fragrant. Yes, it's really very fragrant, but I'm waiting for the kick, how come that's difficult? - Sambol is spicier than chili peppers, right? - Maybe they chose the really attractive ones before, and now these are really young. - Yes. - That one is a little spicy, but it's more fragrant, it's more like, almost citric, acidic. - Yes. - Mom, (laughs) Ma-gah ketchup, (speaks in foreign language). (in foreign language) -We just asked the uncle how old he is, 73 years old!

I thought he was about 50 years old, look how young his features are. Living off the land, yes. It was an honor to be in his presence, to share a meal with him, even though we don't speak the same language, even though, I'm sure, our entire thought process and worldview are total opposites. but simply being able to share a presence, be with him, sit next to him. He is an amazing, amazing man. Thank you. - And with a little chili, better. (upbeat ska music) - Wow, it's hot now! Mm, I have so many childhood memories of this.

This is one of my favorite snacks. With that sambol it is starchy, it is smoked, it is toasted. That's really good. (upbeat ska music) The simple lack of

, but everything prepared by hand, prepared with love, grown with their hands and then prepared. The respect they have for the land and for Sri Lanka, and this is, it's amazing, it's amazing. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to meet and learn from the wisdom, lifestyle and generosity of the Vedda

tribe

and the people we met, they were so welcoming they had never done anything like this before. , and showed hospitality.

What always touches my heart in situations like that is that even when you can't communicate verbally, you can still communicate with your actions, with your feelings, with the overall feel of everything. And so if you can just hang out, if you can genuinely appreciate the food, if you can smile, if you can make positive gestures, that's what really comes out and that's what, those are the memories that last, those are the, the people are just amazing. And that is one of those situations, food. I loved the food, I loved how it was homemade, I loved how everyone shared, graciously shared that food with us.

But it was the people, the community, the sharing, that really stood out.
