I Ventured Into The Most Dangerous Place In The South

Mar 16, 2024
foreigner wait what is this? It's actually the ocean. How long has it been since we saw that, like three weeks? no, we are not in Florida or the Caribbean, we are in Alabama, people yes, Alabama has an ocean, it is not very big, but they I have some, it was day 20 on this long and tiring road trip

south

, this is a breath of fresh air from the ocean breeze, ah, what a shame, it's so cloudy and all, but that's how it is in the ocean sometimes, right, we'll be here along the gulf for the next few days it'll be a hell of a lot different here than the agricultural land I just left.

Mobile has a lot of culture and some jobs and feels alive. Rural Alabama has its own charm, but this is either invigorating or okay. Mobile Alabama. We're right on Mobile Bay, that's a port right there. It has been a very important part of the history of this city. Many things pass through that port. Cars, food, cheap Chinese junk. You may not know it, but Mobile has the 12th largest port in the country. So where are we anyway? We are here. The mobile is located along the Gulf of Mexico and is a short drive from Mississippi and Florida.

i ventured into the most dangerous place in the south...

It's a really neat area. The city center is known for its history and charming streets, and there are many beaches nearby. We saw that some people already know the posh suburbs of Mobile and we'll get to that in a minute. The population here is 187,000 and is not declining rapidly, but there have been quite a few people who have moved from Mobile to the suburbs. where it's a lot quieter and safer, there's a lot of good things to talk about but it's Alabama so it's not going to be perfect before we get to the awesome, let's start with the bad things because that's what

of you want first.

The crime here is off the charts. This might come as a surprise to me, according to the FBI, moving parts like the one we're in now have the highest number of violent crimes of any city in the country, much more than Memphis. and Detroit, the only city more

dangerous

is St Louis, you probably don't hear much about that, but look at this map, that big dark spot over here, keep in mind that there are a lot of cities that don't report their crimes to the FBI. so this list may be a little biased, that doesn't mean they don't have a crisis here, check this out, which US cities are more

dangerous

than Mobile Zero, crime is al

most

five times higher than anywhere else in a state that is already dangerous. a one in nine chance of being a victim of a property crime here, one in nine.

I don't know if I've ever seen that before and I look at these things all the time. I was actually quite surprised when I saw that. Mobile Alabama, most of the problems are on the north side of town, that's where we are now. I mean, it looks pretty bleak driving in the morning. I think the ghettos of the South look different from the ghettos of the Northeast and the Midwest, they're all brick houses up there. They are not falling down as many houses down here are made of wood and all this overgrowth makes everything look even worse.
You might be wondering how much houses like this are worth, not that you want to move here or anything, but you could. get a house on this street for three thousand dollars if you wanted, don't Google it, I was alone on a road in Mobile Alabama early in the morning, damn this tree is nice, ah, there were over 50 murders here last year , the Mobile Police Department says violent crime numbers here are going down even though they have a shortage of police. I don't know how they're doing it of course, mostly gang and drug addict murders and it looks like the teenage Knuckleheads here are running the show for now.
You know, find a way to deal with it and Pritchard right out of mobile is even worse. This is what downtown Pritchard looks like. You could call Pritchard a ghetto and they couldn't argue that you wouldn't want to live in Pritchard's crime. Here's bad bad bad Mobile police chief says there's not much the police department can do to reduce all homicides so we can prevent them we have to know who the criminals are he said well I'll tell you where Look, I just got here and I know where they live. A Church leader here said they need stricter gun control and a crackdown on violent music.
The music our young people listen to is crazy. He says he teaches them violence and they are listening to it. over and over again and their mentalities are starting to want to imitate this violent music they hear. I think we would all agree that it is very poor throughout the north and many homes end up here in very poor condition many North Mobile is simply abandoned or on the way too abandoned, it is in poor condition, but that's how it is here, but let's get out of this part of the city, it's time to show you all the wonderful things I saw here, this is downtown Mobile, right on Dolphin Street is the main entertainment area of downtown.
This is where there are many bars, clubs and restaurants. It's also where all the tourists hang out. This might remind you of New Orleans. Well, to me the mobile center feels like a cleaner, safer New Orleans. They have the same things the French Quarter has, just in smaller doses, not as many potholes and broken sidewalks, not as many bombs and lazy people running around, it's definitely a lot colder than New Orleans and there's clearly work to be done. but in general the center is quite nice. I have to say if you want your New Orleans fix they have what you need, don't worry they have little daiquiri shops where you can get slushies to go for a walk around downtown and yes, have accounts here with the purchase of some peanuts apparently that's great if you don't want to go unnoticed down here wear some beads people even throw their beads into the trees like in New Orleans you may not know this but Mardi Gras originally started in Mobile and mobile was founded by the French and was the original capital of Louisiana.
It was also part of Florida at one time. There is a lot of confusing history about all this, but throughout the area you see Spanish and French influences, there is some Creole. and a little bit Catholic, I mean, they have an art, music and dance scene. Everything feels much more relaxed here than the rest of Alabama. It's definitely more laid back and liberal than the rest of Alabama. I'm sure a lot of Alabama die-hards think this

place

is for the devil, we're in the deep

south

so religion is a big deal. Alabama is actually the most religious state of all when you measure the number of people who go to church all the time you are there.
I remembered that everywhere you go there are churches everywhere here, some are really impressive and historic, many are Baptist. I thought it was a church. I think it's some kind of event center, but this is a very impressive church. It is called the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Concepción is great, I actually went to church here because it was Easter Sunday. I never go to church, but it was a very pleasant experience. We'll be back soon, so this would probably be a good time to talk about one of my sponsors. Stay on top of the news and I keep hearing about this financial crisis that is going to happen, like Bloomberg and BlackRock and even Wells Fargo saying that we need to change our financial plans.
Some say the US dollar will not be the world currency. Other news says. We're about to enter a recession, but almost everything you read says something is brewing. One way to have a good backup plan is to invest in gold and silver. Many experts say that the cost of gold will skyrocket soon. Patriot Gold Group is a premier gold and silver coin dealer helping clients invest in physical precious metals. If you think we're going to see a financial crisis, a good alternative is a no-fee Life 401k or an IRA backed by physical gold and silver. Many top experts say that gold and silver are going to reach record levels.
I'm telling you, I'm doing it. The link to Patriot Gold is in the description and let them know that Nick Johnson sent you and now we're back to the show that Mobile Alabama was. It was a big deal a long time ago because of the port and cotton in the area, many cotton farmers, lawyers, merchants and businessmen were the first to prosper here, but Mobile fell on hard times and the cotton industry collapsed, which They established the

place

back then, in the 70s, they closed many shipbuilding industries. Well, we were in peacetime, we didn't need as many National Defense jobs, so the 70s were a difficult time for mobility, they lost a lot of jobs and the city. struggled and a lot of people left today, there aren't a ton of amazing jobs here but things seem to be getting quite good, a lot of good paying jobs here today are in shipping, fishing and manufacturing, there are actually a lot of good high jobs . skilled manufacturing jobs here they are even building airplanes in the area hopefully those jobs aren't outsourced one day hopefully Mexico doesn't start building our airplanes and ships they would suck and of course tourism is a big problem here spring break here is It's a crazy as is the rest of the Alabama Gulf Coast.
I wasn't here during spring break, it was early April so there really wasn't much going on and I was fine with that and the neighborhoods. Everyone looks at these houses. about a mile from downtown, dirty, southern, charming, huh, they don't make houses like this anymore. This kind of look resembles the Saint Charles Avenue district. I saw New Orleans on the first day of the trip, which seems like years ago at this point, all this old stuff. Antebellum's restored homes sure are nice to look at in case you're wondering about home theaters, between two and four hundred grand, a good deal, eh, I know, but it's not just the Mobile area that does What makes the area so special is what's around it. the whole bay to show you what it all looks like, here is the route I took.
I went to Daphne in Fairhope, both are very nice, upscale suburbs, then through rural Baldwin County to the coast at Gulf Shores and then took a ferry. to Dauphin Island and then drove back to mobile. I know everyone. I did it for you and me to see everything. My first stop was Daphne to get there. You take a bridge. It takes approximately 20 minutes. Now Daphne is considered one of the upper class regions of the Bay, but you don't have to have a high income to be considered upper class in Alabama, the average family in Daphne makes about 75k a year, many of the people who fled from Mobile live on this side of the Bay and cross the bridge every day to go to work.
You could say that Daphne is your typical conservative, wealthy Southern place. This side of the bay is much safer than Mobile. I'll tell you the average cost of a house in Mobile. It costs 175 thousand dollars, that's pretty cheap here in a suburb, a house will cost you around 300 thousand and that's not too bad either. Daphne has a quaint little town center, there isn't much here, although I don't know if I can even call this a town center, but there is clearly plenty of parking just 10 minutes up the street. The Fairhope is a much fancier version of the Daphne home theater system, costing about a hundred grand more this way, but you get a lot more for what you pay for.
I mean, Fairhope actually has a real downtown with all the fancy things that rich people would want in their downtown look at all this stuff. I know it's Alabama, you probably didn't even know Alabama had all this, but they do. Fairhope also has a nice little Marina, I'm sure it costs a lot to park a boat at these people can just hop on their boats and cruise around Mobile Bay and be out in the Atlantic Ocean in no time. This is where I have brunch at a place called The Broken Egg Cafe. It's in Fairhope and it was packed because it was Easter Sunday.
I bought a big plate of Huevos Rancheros, so after leaving Fairhope it gets pretty rural very quickly. Most of the region between the posh suburbs and the coast is completely open. His name is Baldwin. County and Baldwin counties are quickly becoming a go-to place for many people who want peace, quiet, and affordability, and to be close to the coast. Baldwin County is super quiet, there is a lot of country life and farmland. I bet you didn't even know that. A lot of southern Alabama was farmed with corn and beans like this, but they even have horse ranches here.
I didn't think I'd see a stretch like this just 20 minutes from the beach in Alabama, this will all probably go away. Although there is plenty of space down here, look at all that Prime real estate, someday this will all be subdivisions and shopping centers. I can practically smell Starbucks now. I wanted to go to a place here called Bogies that totally looks like my kind of place, but it was closed, I know that well. No Man's Land Baldwin County finally extends toward the beach. There are some pretty pretty coastal towns here on the coast. This is the population of Gulf Shores, 15,000 and going onincrease, this is actually the fastest growing county. in the state right now words about how nice and still affordable the Alabama Gulf Coast is.
The Wall Street Journal just revealed this location when it published an article that talked about how people are fleeing nearby Florida and establishing new lives here. the same ocean, the same sunset, the same white sand beaches, but not the same price, no, to me, it seems like a mini and much less spectacular Panama City Beach. Oh, don't get me wrong, although Gulf Shores and Orange Beach get super loud during spring break. It's just not noisy Florida. I didn't know Alabama had so many quaint little coastal towns. It's a bit to discover. I mean, after all, this is one of the least visited states, but I wouldn't want to wade into those waters.
I heard there's a lot of industrial waste pollution here, since there are like five rivers that empty into Mobile Bay, did you know some people call Mobile Bay, that's the toilet? Mappy, did you seriously fart and yes, I know the gulf is not the cleanest body of water. It's great for sitting, watching and sunbathing, but not necessarily for frolicking in the water and How are you sunburned? The sun hasn't even risen. I have sensitive skin. I can see it so at the end of the peninsula you can take a ferry to Dauphin Island. I think it fits like 20 cars if you miss the ferry at the end of the day you have to drive back no one wants to do it right and then you get to Dauphin Island it's a very calm and relaxed place there's only 1800 people here so you know Everyone will know your beeswax in town, so if you like to keep a low profile, just know there's probably a lot of gossip going on on the island, but check out these cute houses along the gulf.
I didn't think I'd see this in Alabama, it looks like the outer banks up north. Carolina, to me, these are all in the six to eight hundred thousand dollar range, but there are waves here, you can't surf them, but you can get close to the water and enjoy the beautiful views. Although they have some houses at moderate prices here. This is where the least financially stable live in the middle of the island, all of them cost about half as much as the houses along the water. It was in this part of the island that I saw the fourth Confederate flag on the entire trip, which surprised me since I took so many back roads when I was here I thought I would see a lot more of those things.
Look at all the things there are to do on this small island. I think their sign needs to be fixed, huh, but most of Dolphin Island just. Really rural and relaxed, a very nice place to live if you want to be on an island and want a bit of peace and quiet and then cross a very long bridge to get back to mobile again. I'd hate to break down on this bridge. I would also hate to be there during a storm, thanks when I was in Mobile. I did a lot, there's a lot to do and unlike New Orleans you can just walk around here and relax, so I waited until it stopped raining.
One day while exploring downtown a bit the first person I ran into was a guy who was a real hustler who rode around town on his bike playing music for tourists like me, cool guy, he's got me on the bike . My name is Keith Lamar Rogers. I make music in the streets they call me keyboard my Cash App label is klr1971 and I'm going to demonstrate a song 60 seconds minus three seconds sit on that's a couple playing an original love song say your name again buy it's the sign of dollar K k l uh 1971. support me, please.
I hopped on the blind mule for lunch, which is a favorite of locals and tourists like me. I chose the Cajun Boudin wrap, it was very good. Everyone told me I had to go to the vets. I guess they figured out I'd like to or something and they were right, vets are a cool place, my kind of place is a dive bar right in the middle of downtown. I took some time during the downpours and had a drink that has exactly one and a quarter ounces of alcohol. Then it stopped raining and I took my drink to go because you can listen and then guess what the sun came out briefly.
There are some homeless people in Mobile, but not many. If this park were in central California, it would be packed, you can bet. I found a park downtown that appeared to be a Central homeless location, but again, this is nothing compared to many downtown parks that have a real homeless headache. This homeless guy just needed a break. I guess I don't blame him, it's a pretty quiet town. The fashion here is top notch, you could wear these suits to church if you wanted and fit in perfectly. I wouldn't wear something like this in the sweltering summer, although I can only imagine what that would be like.
I told you this is the birthplace of the Mardi. Gras, they even have statues here to prove it. I heard my hotel has a rooftop bar so I had to check that out. I was super excited what the heck closed. Damn I was so excited too look at that view I can't really see because the door is locked, by the way they don't mess with parking tickets here, word of warning, make sure you pay for parking at the end of my exploration that night . I went back to the vets for a few drinks. They had a live 80's band called Here Comes.
Sucker Punch did a pretty good job with hysteria and zombie. I have to say it's a great band and what a night. I really like the mobile phone, in fact much more than I thought. It feels like a nicer, cleaner, more toned down version of some of the more popular historic towns along the coast, imagine if you picked up a few blocks of the French Quarter, hosed them down, and then moved them like 100 miles to the East, it's all very charming southern throughout this area with oak lined streets and older stately homes. I'm glad I came here even though it doesn't have all the drama that most places I visit have, it's totally southern in the sense that nothing really happens here, progress is very fast and change moves slowly Yes, they need more development, yes, administrative jobs are not.
There's nothing here yet and I'm sure there are some major problems with crime in some areas of the city, but I hope the mobile doesn't change too much, it's a bit modern and charming in its own way, so you've been there since the 80s 85. Okay, yeah, how has mobile changed since you moved there? Well it really has changed a lot in the 80s, the city center used to be popping up, you know, the city buses ran everywhere, all the shops were here, but as the 80s became very well known and the centers commercials became popular. A lot of things moved west to the western part of Mobile, so the downtown areas, which in most major city downtown areas are shrinking because they're building on the outskirts, so mobile devices had made a reverse transition. and it's revitalizing its downtown with more development of its history here and a lot more industry with the downtown area so really reviving it again yeah it's great it's clean it feels safe it feels like a little mini New Orleans without all the drama and the broken roads and the trash and the headaches that come with being in New Orleans.
Have you noticed an influx of people waving their phones around where they come from? a lot, um, Europe, um, a lot of Europeans are here, we have a lot. of Asians, we have a large Latin community here, a wide variety of cultures that are here, that's why they call us Gumbo City, because it's a lot of people here and people from the north when they come to visit mobile devices. In reality, they just get carried away by the culture, the food and the lifestyle that, um, they end up moving here, so while how is it that mobile isn't at the top of people's lists? in the places to move to and in the south, you know what I mean, because I liked it a lot.
I found it very charming. Many people simply do not talk about mobile as a destination. It doesn't make any list of places you should move to. I've heard why it's okay. You're like that hidden gem, a lot of people will say, "You know, we've always driven by mobile, but we've never stopped, so when they walk into my store, they just fall in love with mobile city and then three weeks later , they'll say, "Hey, do you remember us? I stopped by here and spent the weekend here, so, there's a lot of history in Mobile, you know we're a Six Nations city, so, um, the history here is just phenomenal and, um, the tourism industry is very big here in the city of Mobile too, but if you look at the city of New Orleans, it's such a big city that where they are, they care about their money.
The advertising really points out that a lot of people associate New Orleans with Bourbon Street and places like that, so if you're a former law enforcement officer, you'd have an idea of this, there are parts of the cell phone that are more dangerous than any other. neighborhood in the country according to statistics now I went to some of those neighborhoods they didn't seem that bad to me why Mobile's crime rate why is it so high well I don't know Mobile's crime rate per capita the size of the city of the Mobile is the norm, now that you get to bigger cities your crime rate will go up a lot more and it's not juvenile crime, it's not adult crime, it's juvenile crime, so once you get the hang of it and grab that and take it under control , then you can start to control the problem in your city.
You're going to have problems with young people like teenagers who shoot guns and do drugs and just be Knuckleheads. Yeah, you know, I think it's hard. between 15 and 18 you can't go to a nightclub, you have to be within a certain curfew, you have to deal with high school, so the lifestyle for that age group is very limited, it's very hard to be a teenager once in a while, when you're um, it's all about social media, so you're drawn to social media because that's really the only thing the age group can do, that's why they get addicted to social media. social mm-hmm Gary, that all sounds great, what is it? the downside of mobile I I it all sounds like a wonderful place you know I can't really tell you the downside of mobile city I love mobile city um yeah I walk my neighborhoods every day every day uh four or five miles just walking you can see little old ladies walking their dogs through the neighborhoods um and I'm not saying you know mobile is the safest city, of course we're thriving to be the safest city in America, but everyone , all in the United States. is having that gun violence problem in every unit, I think it's a national problem, but we're fighting that problem here with the city of Mobile, so it's wonderful that you can come downtown and have a good time, our entertainment district it's a good time like if we go to New Orleans, I think it's better than New Orleans because in New Orleans you have to not let your guard down if you just want to relax, I mean you can, there are more places to party in New Orleans, but for someone my age I I just want, I want to party, but I don't need to be so overwhelming where I have to worry about turning a corner, but tripping and falling on cobblestone streets that aren't maintained, having to worry about all the drama that's coming to New Orleans um mobile is like a cute little brother uh that I think is better than anything New Orleans has to offer yeah the weather here is absolutely just trees avocado trees uh we're 45 minutes from the beach there's four of us . hours from Atlanta five hours from Jacksonville Florida uh two and a half hours from New Orleans um uh 45 minutes from Biloxi Mississippi you know it's like in the middle of those great places to go is where your destiny would like to take you Yeah, the cost of living is going up Now, people are starting to raise the cost of living there more than you guys are comfortable with because it's so beautiful, you know, yesterday I was talking to a real estate agent about this and she said that, um, the market was very high, but he said it's starting to come down to reduce our property tax here in the Cmobile is very, very affordable, very affordable.
We tell people what our property tax is here in the city of Mobile, their jaws drop. open it's very affordable look good man, well I'm glad I was able to go there. I'm glad I was able to show people what Mobile is like. um. I wish I had seen it on a much sunnier day. It was a little gray when we were there. there, but yeah, it's a wonderful place to be. I didn't expect it to be so charming, welcoming and relaxed. Lovely is what I found, so I'm glad I went and got to meet you and me.
I'm glad to share with everyone what I experienced, yeah, I'm really glad that they went through them, we were able to talk and, uh, everyone's learning and they know that we're a Six Nations city, you know, it's fun.
