I FLEW ON AMERICA'S WORST AIRLINES BACK TO BACK!

Jun 08, 2021
Now, if there are two

airlines

that I get asked to review more than any other, it's probably Spirit and Frontier. They are two low cost

airlines

here in the states and widely considered here at least two of the

worst

airlines in the US. Today I am really running the challenge of taking Spirit Airlines from here in Oakland, California, to Las Vegas, Nevada, the party city. And from there we connected with Frontier with a flight to St. Louis Missouri. I have no idea what to expect, so let's jump in and find out what the two

worst

American airlines are like and if they really are the worst.

I don't know, we'll find out. The first thing I did on today's US ultra-low tour was drop off my bag. Interestingly, Spirit charges less for checked luggage than for carry-on luggage, in this case $30 versus the $45 they wanted for a carry-on bag. Once I dropped off my bag, I received my dose of radiation and headed out the door. Where I was expecting this gaudy monstrosity of a paint scheme. This was delivered new to Spirit in 2011, so it was nine years old when I

flew

in it. The gate area was busy and they announced that today's flight to the party city was full.

More Interesting Facts About,

He'll probably be expected to be honest on a red-eye flight before the weekend. Boarding was a fairly simple process with only four zones. Hello how are you? Vegas baby. It was time to leave and I walked down the access bridge to the neon rocket to see what delights the next 90 minutes had in store for me. The first thing I noticed was that the cabin was relatively smart. They have thick front seats that you can pay a little more for, but I was doing it right and headed to the cheap seats in the

back

, where I would be accommodated for the flight to Las Vegas.

First impressions were good, it was a bit comfortable. The seats weren't too bad for a short flight, but the legroom really wasn't that good. However, there was a decent sized tray table that is much better than the next ones I made that you will see later in the video. I'd just like to briefly say hello to my amazing supporters on Patreon. In exchange for helping support the channel, you get free merchandise, behind-the-scenes access, early access to videos, and a weekly live chat I do every week called "thirsty Thursday." Where we just have a drink and spend an hour talking about airplanes or anything else.

You can join them at the link on the screen now for just $5 a month. I mean it's a little tight but it's not that bad. It's like Ryanair legroom, it's actually only an hour and a half flight or so. So yeah, let's go to Las Vegas with Spirit Airlines. Oh, and apparently it's a full flight too. Shortly after, the access bridge was disconnected and we began our retreat. Aside from a plane full of party-loving tourists, a couple rows ahead was this party-loving dog. Heading into the bright lights of Las Vegas. I had to laugh at this meme a follower sent me on Twitter just as we started a disavow.
We started our taxi and took off into a beautiful sunset to begin our flight east. Our route today took a southeasterly course from San Francisco toward Fresno before heading east toward Nevada and descending toward Las Vegas. Tonight's flight time was one hour and six minutes at a cruising altitude of 33,000 feet. At a time when airlines are trying to stop people from drinking too much on planes, spirits seem to be going in the opposite direction with a variety of cocktails and liqueurs to get you in the holiday mood. The sun set as we crossed the desert toward Las Vegas.
Very fast moving now towards Las Vegas. And it's actually not that bad. Leg room is a bit tight. The crew is quirky but nice and friendly. Overall, so far not bad at all. I tried to rest a little but soon the competition on board woke me up. FA: Very good, looks like you found it, congratulations 23 bravo, that's 23B. Before long, the bright lights of Las Vegas appeared on the horizon and we began our descent toward Party City. I would just like to welcome you to Fabulous Las Vegas. The seat belt sign is still on, so please stay seated with your seat belt fastened.
Until we get to the door and the captain turns off the seat belt sign. Thank you so much. See you later. In Las Vegas, as soon as you get off the plane, you're bombarded with slot machines and flashing lights. Joy So here at the Las Vegas airport airplane casino. Crazy look, look at this look. It's like gaming machines everywhere. Bright . Let's go get my bag and then the next leg. The spirit wasn't that bad, you know? I think the biggest problem with them is all those extra fees. So let's go get my bag. Frontier I've heard they're probably a little worse than Spirit.
We will soon find out that we are going to find out. I headed to the baggage claim area and grabbed my bag before trying to figure out where I need to go for my next fight to St. Louis. This is how the bag arrived. I have to find a place to go now for my next flight. Which apparently is a D door. But I have no idea. Where is gate D because there isn't really any signage. To be honest, it's not really designed for hookups in Las Vegas. So there's the problem, it's in another terminal that's why I can't find it.
And I have to take a train to get there. OK let's go . Good. To the boarding gate of my Frontier flight. Boarding in a few minutes. I have to say I wasn't really feeling it at the moment. I had heard such terrible things about Frontier and to be honest, at this point I wasn't looking forward to boarding this next flight at all. Oh God, why am I doing this? Can I just go home? There was a flight to London that left about an hour ago with Virgin. Why can't I just be in it? As the gate area filled up, the stressed gate agents started shouting instructions at people and I just wanted it to be over. (Gate Agent) This flight has not yet declared boarding. (Gate Agent) We have an approximately 20 minute wait for a mandatory security search. (Gate Agent) As soon as it is complete, we will board them and get them out of here as quickly as possible.
Finally it was time to get on board and get out of this hell on earth. I walked down the jet bridge to board the Frontier A321 that will take me to the Midwest. The Frontier seats in the front have extra legroom, but are still in a 3/3 configuration, just like the rest of the plane. I paid more for carry-on luggage at the border because I had a tight connection in St. Louis. And they didn't want to take the risk of having to wait. Frontier's Airbuses aren't as squished as the spirits, and while the seats don't recline, they're set to a pre-reclined tilt that makes them quite comfortable.
However, they have these tables with comically small trays and well, not much else. In fact, they're probably the most basic seats I've ever seen on a commercial flight. It's a bit basic but legroom is good. Certainly better than the Spirit, but the seats are essentially a metal frame. Everything Look at this little tray. Well, boarding is decent and we are ready to go. And I have a whole row to myself. Sweet! FA: There is a stewardess in front of each of your sections. I'm in charge of A. Hello A! You can move on A if you want, but you're already pretty well separated.
FA: B there is someone greeting you B you can move in B C - everyone is full and I am very sorry, but we cannot move you forward for weight and balance reasons. That's the only reason we can't translate it to weight balance. Weight balance for takeoff. Weight balance for the trip. Weight balance. Thank you. Alright, ladies and gentlemen, we need 20 volunteers. 20 volunteers to advance. You have to be faster, you won't be able to go. So if you want to move forward, I need 20 people to get up right now and move. I only see one. There are two.
As if everyone is complaining that they are all sitting together. Now I'm giving them the opportunity to move. This team is so fun it's unbelievable. I love it, but look at a whole row for me. Crew "Alright, here's a Q&A portion of your flight for those who are still awake" "First question everyone likes to ask. Do we have Wi-Fi here at Frontier?" "No-Fi. But we will emotional support, high five in the air for any of your withdrawal symptoms" Number 2, do we have pillows and blankets? No. You must hug the person you love, the one you brought with you, and the one you have permission to touch.
Keyphrase permission to tap. Touch someone without permission on this plane, we have friends in St. Louis who will give you a new house, three hot meals a day and a new wardrobe. I heard orange is the new number three black. Do we have a place to charge electronic devices? No. The only thing we will charge on this plane will be your debit and credit card. For your snacks, your drink and your happy hour purchases. That's right, it's always happy hour at the border. We would have a double happy hour. Whoop whoop. Most of you go to sleep.
We will watch them sleep. Alright everyone, sit

back

, relax, enjoy your flight. Once the cabaret act was completed, we started our taxi towards the track to leave Las Vegas. It was interesting to see a parked RAF tanker that had been in Nevada for a military exercise that was taking place. Our route tonight took us east of Las Vegas to cross Arizona, Utah, Colorado and Kansas before beginning our descent towards St Lou Missouri. Tonight's flight time was 2 hours 47 minutes at a cruising altitude of 39,000 feet. So I'm flying from Las Vegas on the A321 and it's really nice not to have anyone else on board.
I mean, I'm lying here in my seats and it's very comfortable. Well, not that you can really see it. But even when you sit down it's not that bad. The seats are somewhat pre-reclined. So for me there is a lot of legroom. It's really nice. I'm trying to get some sleep before we get to St. Louis and see how we go. I woke up as the sun began to rise in the east and we began our descent towards St Louis. Good morning. I actually managed to get some sleep on their flight. A couple of hours at least.
It's not the most comfortable, but it was still much better than sitting upright. We are now descending towards St. Louis Missouri. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to St. Louis. Local time is 6:43 a.m. m. It has been a real pleasure watching you sleep tonight or this morning. Please have a safe trip home. If St. Louis is your home, welcome home. If you are here on vacation, stay safe. And enjoy your day. Thank you for choosing Frontier Airlines. So, friends, here's the important part: how much did my little jaunt across the U.S. cost? Well, let's start with the spirit.
The base rate was only $56. The seat reservation cost me $11 and the suitcase cost me $30. Giving a total price of $97 or £87 for a 407 mile flight. United Airlines from San Francisco to Las Vegas costs £68 including carry-on luggage, making alcohol £10 more expensive than United. Frontier charged just $3 more on the base fare for a flight more than three times the distance of 1,300 miles, but its fees for extras were an exorbitant $31 for reserving the seat and a whopping $42 for bringing your carry-on luggage. on board. That is, the seat and the suitcase cost more than the price of the flight. But even with these expensive extras, the total fare was only $132 or £106.
A quick search showed United on the same route was £14 more, £120 with hand luggage. But that does include a plane change in Denver. It's pretty clear to me that once you've paid for a bag and a seat reservation, Spirit and Frontier's low-cost options aren't much cheaper than the major airlines. But on the other hand, they offer no less than the major airlines. For example, you still have to pay for food, like on the main lines. I found this onboard service perfectly acceptable. The crew was really nice, the seats weren't too uncomfortable even for someone my height. And at the border, the seats are really amazing for the economy.
A brilliant fixed, recumbent idea that gives you a lot more space and, most importantly, I traveled 1,700 miles across America for less than £200. So why do people hate Spirit & Frontier? Honestly, I didn't come any closer to finding out on this trip. I would love to hear your opinion in the comments, why do you think these airlines have such a bad reputation? Not the airlines, they were absolutely amazing. Disappointing that I couldn't really find anything to complain about. Frontier was just amazing. Really very good. I mean, even if the flight had been busy, I know it might not have been the best example to show the amount of space because it was an empty flight.
And there will probably be a lot more people normally. But even in regular seats, if it's crowded, you have plenty of legroom. Really comfortable, those semi-reclined seats are quite comfortable. And it means you don't have people lying on your lap or anything, it's really nice. So we approved Frontier. And Spirit again. People told me it was one of the worst airlines in the United States, but it was also amazing. Although it was a very busy flight, it was a little crowded, but overall it wasn't too bad. So here in St Louis Missouri on this frosty morning but what a nice day.
Because I had a good flight. Let me know what you think of Frontier and Spirit in the comments below. I mean, is it the hate they get? Let me know below in the comments. Also let me know what is your worst airline that you have flown before here in the US. I would love to know. In the meantime, as always, thanks for watching, take care and we'll see you next time.
