I Built a REAL Nerf Attack Drone!

May 31, 2021
I'm going to put a Nerf blaster on a

drone

. I want to throw my Nerf ax and hit your

drone

in the air. We accept the challenge. We have an endless

nerf

war here at the studio and every morning Jan, who is a deadly

nerf

warrior, ambushes us and somehow always takes me by surprise. He needed to take the lead and that's when I

real

ized air supremacy. I've been flying drones for years and gotten pretty good at it, so the way to beat Jan is to pick up a Nerf blaster. and put it on a drone, what started as a simple idea turned into the most challenging build I've ever done and in today's video I'm going to take you with me on that journey as I go through all the emotional ups and downs and a lot of things. from emotional lows why is this getting stuck now I know what you might be thinking if this is even legal, well it's not like we're actually putting a

real

gun on a drone or a flamethrower on a drone, instead, We are adding a toy, the danger comes from the actual flying aspect because the drone itself is much more dangerous than any Nerf gun, so this is where I tell you not to do this at home.
i built a real nerf attack drone
I have years of experience flying fpv and will only be flying this thing. in a very controlled environment so like I said just don't do this so first things first how do nerf guns really work and which one should I use now since we already have a huge arsenal of nerf guns? I found the conflict one because The electric Nerf gun makes the most sense and upon taking it apart I realized that the counter-rotating wheels inside act exactly like a baseball pitching machine and that's really all I need from the blaster, the shooter, is a term Very technical, I know, oh my god, oh hi. you're going to mount that and a full battery box on top of the drone we don't need anything from the gun, not this, don't eat it, good luck, it's still all in theory, I want to get one of those out. like ax throws with nerf cheats i want to throw my nerf ax and hit your drone in the air in open combat okay, challenge accepted, you have to take out my drone with an ax before I shoot you with the dart, a duel of gentlemen , well I can't wait now that I'm done with my R&D.

More Interesting Facts About,

i built a real nerf attack drone...

I came up with a general plan: a nerf blaster is basically just three components, you have the shooter, a magazine full of darts, and some kind of pusher that pushes the darts into the shooter. and I would move. the pusher uses a servo that is connected to the drone which i would control with my remote control, i combine that in the most efficient way and put it on a drone and it should fly and yes i am mounting it on top why would you be ? Asking right, last year I made a video where we put a 360 camera on top of a drone and the number one question I got was why not just strap the camera underneath, wouldn't it be more stable?
i built a real nerf attack drone
Well the truth is that it's a There's a misconception called the rocket pendulum fallacy which basically says it's going to be just as stable up or down so it's best to make it as convenient as possible and I don't want to have the charger underneath because it's like I'm going to land something. I'm going to land like this and it's going to tip over before I can start figuring out how to put all this stuff together. I need to figure out how to feed the trigger. The blaster I chose actually uses four. double the batteries and that's a lot of unnecessary weight, so the drone itself already uses a large, heavy battery that has plenty of power to power both the drone and the nerf motors.
i built a real nerf attack drone
The only problem is that it runs at a different voltage than the nerf motors. I solved this by using a voltage regulator. I started by setting it to a flat five volts, definitely like a normal Nerf dart, but I wanted to see if I can overvolt this and make it more powerful. I don't want to burn out the engines, do it. Okay, the short answer is no, because I'll burn out the engines. You can smell it? I can smell it, smell it. I think I ended up settling for six or seven volts. It's a simple solution.
I can use the battery that already powers my drone. my nerf motors now this isn't going to work if I just bind these things with hot glue and tape, I mean I need a good solution that looks good and works well and that's where 3D modeling and printing comes into play. I wanted to start. with a magwell as a base, that way I can remove the magazine and put a new one in, plus all the other components can connect directly to it. Does this fit? Oh, that was so satisfying for all this CAD modeling. I used a program called fusion 360 which is a great software and also free to use and the best tutorials are from a youtube channel called online product design.
Now, the really cool thing about this process of 3D modeling and then 3D printing what you modeled is the idea of creating a rapid prototype, oh my gosh, I'm going to run into the cross right there. I should have known that would happen. Pla is notoriously fragile, so I decided to try printing it in a different material called TPU, which is notoriously flexible, in fact, it actually was. a little too flexible so this didn't solve my problem either, but then we got a new 3D printer at the Prusa studio, we got the i3 mark 3s and what came with it was this stuff I'd never used before called petg it's basically so strong like pla but much more durable and it's not going to break like pla does so i ended up reprinting everything in pet g because i really needed that durability, after all this is a flying drone that's what i love.
This you can make mistakes, you can experiment, you can see what doesn't work, doesn't work, for example, for the push mechanism. I initially designed this as a rack and pinion style where it's like it rotates as it goes into linear motion, don't worry. It would have worked great, except once I had it in my hands it didn't work at all when I went back to the drawing board, so I ended up settling on a design that was even simpler than that, just a couple of gears and a piece of paper. . Hold the pusher so that as it spins it acts like a piston so as it spins it actually pushes and then pulls back and pushes in again, that way I can use my continuously rotating servo to push the pusher towards the darts. this is a big step nick this is a big step i'm so excited i'm ready to shoot some people alright i'm going to turn this dial oh stuck the smugness i carry i think like icarus you too flew close to the sun my friend try this once smarter, wow, this is a good test result, yes, you are trying to create something unnatural from something so beautiful and elegant.
He's getting closer to making this drone. Do you hear anything because I don't? I don't hear the propellers of a drone. I don't hear it. I do not see it. I don't believe it. After iterating dozens of times on the main assembly, I arrived at a design that was printable. In two parts that I just glued together I now have one piece that can hold my components. I already figured out how to power these components. The last thing I need to do is figure out how to control these things from the ground so I can do that, I just need to integrate it into the drone that I actually

built

for this project.
I was using Vivid Frame rookie drone, dji FPV system for video and radio control and I will use this controller to fly the drone. It has enough programmable switches to control the nerf blaster, so the idea is that one switch will arm the shooter and the other switch will arm the servo that will push the darts towards the shooter with a double whammy like they say, right, right, and here it is where my biggest obstacles to this entire project actually began. This project has exploded in complexity much more than I expected, so what's new in life?
The problem I'm facing is that I haven't figured out a way to turn it on and off. a simple 5 volt circuit from a switch using my flight controller it's important to note that the flight controller still works fine you're okay I just smoked it which I literally just smoked it with my body pressing down on it I think I would never feel that low, so of course Jan has some difficulties. No wonder Jan felt victorious in that moment and I felt defeated. They're having a moment, so not only did I have a blown flight controller, I didn't have one yet.
I even have a solution to my problem. I was at my lowest point. He had lost an entire week, but luckily, the Jesus drone swooped in to turn the water into drones. His name is Joshua Bardwell. He is an amazing YouTuber who works on drones for beginners like you. Fortunately, he was able to solve my problem. Now we made a video for his channel where we go over my problem and his solution. Check it out in the channel description of him in the link below, so with my problem solved and my new flight controller ready. By the way, I was ready for the real test, first the test without firing, yes ok, I tested the circuit and it works, it works to my relief, turning on the motors and firing, I jammed it, it jammed again, what the fuck, why does it get stuck just when?
I thought everything was resolved, luckily all I had to do was basically increase the height of this thing by about three millimeters, the charger just wasn't positioned correctly at the correct distance, okay, it's connected, ready to go, starting the engines and with That ended. As my last electronic hurdle, I was finally able to turn on the motors by using one switch and then using a second switch to activate the servo to push the darts into the shooter and then finally I was ready to show the guys what this thing is. Incredibly dangerous, no one nearby, okay, full magazine, do you know if this is going to fly?
Frankly, I don't think it's going to fly. Griffin, oh my god, he actually flew and fired the entire magazine for your demise. Jen Clapton's surprise, Jen no, I don't think she will, I'm going to shoot down that drone, it will meet its demise in my hands, this is it, this is the real test, open combat against Jam and his axe, by the way, too I'll bring a gun. You must try as hard as you can. I want you to really try to hit this from the air. Jan towards the roof for safety. I'm not going to fly around people except Jan, who is fully protected and consents to having a drone crash into him, which is not going to happen, but there is a very real possibility that this thing will crash and once If he does, it will break completely, so we have a chance if Jan knocks him out of the air. will break wren just admitted to himself what the whole world has been admitting for years that he is in fact a failure channel oh I don't even care anymore I just want him on the floor I want my big ass I could take it if I had my big butt I'm sorry man I'm sorry this is good man it can't be a drone I'm not going to lie I feel so vindicated right now so vindicated you're a great scientist and I value you as a friend, damn right? proud of you you should do this as a real node game in a game with other people uh let me round up the peeps and we'll bring that trunk this couldn't have gone better.
I still can't believe how well it worked. This is easily the coolest thing I've ever

built

. If you want to see more games using this we have a whole gaming channel called node where I'm sure we'll be blowing this up in a nerf game soon. Oh, and also if you're interested in learning how to get started with FPV or maybe even like 3D printing and modeling, I've put a bunch of links in the description. Channels like Rhoda Riot and Joshua Bardwell are great for getting you into these hobbies. I highly recommend them. This was an amazing experience.
Please like and subscribe so we can make more videos like this because now that I've caught the bug I want to print more stuff so if anyone wants to partner with us please like it. maybe a laser cutter or a cnc machine, I mean, I'd love to chat with you, let's see what we can do together, and one last thing, thanks for watching everyone, see you in the next video.
