I bought an UNUSED 70-year old ROLLS-ROYCE crate engine! How bad could it be?

Jul 02, 2024
cubic inches served. It's pretty much the same for this

engine

. I looked it up and it might look like a generic Chinese one I

bought

on eBay for $85, but yeah, it's probably a real Ford anyway, it won't work, I mean the bolt pattern. it's the same thing you

could

even you

could

even mount this here look unfortunately it's a carburetor so it has to be like this so we'll get the old conversion kit to go from side draft to down draft and then I think this should work I don't know what direction we want to go here, okay, it's hitting those, there you go, a Rolls-Royce factory finish right there, okay, this is galvanized.

I'm going to have to polish this. a little before you weld it, grind this, take the galvanizing off, it's going to be tight, I think I'm going to flatten them out so it's easier to get to these nuts, much better, tons of space here, now it's bearish, this hull is working, oh.that's not straight, section by section, I don't want this plate to warp, so I'll keep it cold, it won't be as pretty, but at least it won't warp, well, it's uh. There's definitely something under here where I couldn't solder. I soldered it on the inside so I hope that helps a little.

More Interesting Facts About,

i bought an unused 70 year old rolls royce crate engine how bad could it be...

Probably not. I had to grind some of the weld there so the nuts would screw on without interfering which way. We want to set up this assumption, whether it works, it makes more sense to set it up like this. I wonder how bad it's going to be if this thing leaks vacuum? Well, I have a carburetor, it's a choke. Not really, I've never used this carburetor before. let's see, no throttle return, okay, finally got the spark plugs. It took two weeks to get them from England, I should probably change the wheel, these are all rusty, but it looks like it just fits in here, there's a bit. contact there, hopefully, this fits, oh, thank goodness, you should probably set the Gap, oh, you've got the Gap right here. 15, thank goodness this is the right thread, don't go too crazy with the torque, yeah, these are Gap, okay, okay, this one has a three stamped right here it's enclosed oh, I'm not giving you much room here, geez, okay, I guess they're done right, by the way, one thing I didn't show here, this, I've covered this up. vacuum line on the carburetor this is obviously for the vacuum advance which we don't have.

I also connected this line. I'm pretty sure this is probably for a brake booster. This vacuum line right here, so it's plugged. These two lines here that I'm pretty sure go to the original carburetor. Those were those two lines that I opened at the beginning that came out of the box, but I might cover them for now. I won't do it. In fact, I'm not sure if this is vacuum or not, this could be something else with the

engine

. I'm also going to add a break-in additive here, this is a new engine first of all, but these old engines like things with high zc.

I think it's okay, we have fuel, we have spark, hopefully we have compression. I added this oil gauge just because I'm a little worried. It was a little slow getting out of here, but I hope that's just the starting speed. check the oil, I'm not even going to try to use this fuel pump, obviously, it's probably, I mean we're a little low, I could probably add some oil, okay, so we have oil, uh, I opened the breather. spark plugs what else is there oh uh I should probably take that off oh my god oh that would be uh where the rest of the ATF went I wasn't expecting that that surprised me I'm not going to lie go back to Austin Motor Company in Birmingham I guess they don't want it anymore maybe I should grab a fire extinguisher here oh that just spilled oh i got it right oh and there's a hole in this filter how is that possible?
It's a new filter. with my $80 carburetor I make sure the canister doesn't get too full oh yeah ok it has a fuel fire extinguisher. Charlie's moving, I put my helmet on in case it really starts, uh, oops, I choke the power, here we go, this isn't going to fall. Is it solid enough? Well, it started right away, but there is no oil pressure. It's also pretty quiet. I do not need it. I guess we'll run it for a second here and see if, maybe the oil pressure goes up. Wow, that started out good, here we go, not much, we're going good, okay, I forgot it doesn't have coolant.
I'm surprised it started, even though it started so easily. I guess it's actually the carburetor, so we have oil. I saw the pressure go up to 10 or 15 when we were giving it some gas, oh this thing is really cold, well now I guess maybe we try to introduce a little cooling, there's no way this water pump wouldn't works. leak, okay, I have my spare radiator filling up right now and there's actually already a through hole at the bottom for it to get to the water pump oh no, it's leaking, I didn't see that coming anyway, uh, that comes out of the water pump. and drop back here this should work fine for a couple of minutes maybe what am I for.
Oh, I need to put a belt on the fan. I forgot it. I can run it for more than a couple of minutes. I will be happy. I'm just curious to see how the water pump works. This should work very well. Look in the middle, that can, oh yeah, see they're living up to the name of the channel right now. I haven't done anything like this for a while. Okay, I'm not really worried. As for the head gasket, I think it's solid copper, so I don't have to worry about that. Okay, how did I start this again?
Air comes out. It's actually pumping. That is amazing. I have warm water. Okay, let it warm up. a little I guess by the way the smoke is just the paint burning, there are some coolant leaks, I probably want to fix that before taking it on the road, but it seemed like the thermostat was open because it started to run pretty good. and the water pump doesn't really look like it's leaking from the Poley, at least I'm really surprised by that, yeah everything worked too easily, well it's the next day, no oil leaks anywhere, just a little bit of water. on the ground and there is no water in the oil, so I think this engine is good.
I'm a little surprised it started and ran so easily, but I guess having a new carburetor helps a lot. I wonder why this engine is even in the US. I mean, there really aren't any of them out there and I found out that all the parts are in the UK. The only thing I can think of is that maybe someone imported one probably a long time ago at great expense for their project and they never got around to it and you. I know maybe it passed away and it was just kicked around at estate sales or auction houses until I finally got stuck with it, so to be completely honest, when I started this video I thought I was just going to take this engine apart. and when selling it for parts I thought it was a 70

year

old engine, there was no way it wouldn't rust inside, but it turns out it's a pretty strong engine, so I guess it was a surprise to me.
I'm thinking about the fact. The fact that it's waterproof probably went a long way toward saving it, since it had clearly been out for a long time. Its time was up, although I think the box was rotting away and it was only a few more

year

s until it just fell over completely. box and would have been destroyed, but that begs the question, what the hell do I do with this thing? I didn't expect to have a running engine at the end of this video, so what do I do now? I mean, there isn't really a market for this engine in the United States, it's all in England, so you could strip it down for parts and sell it in England.
I mean, I'm sure they would be worth a lot of money, especially since I basically just paid for scrap. Value for this thing, I might leave it in a Jeep. I don't really have much time for that so I don't know, let me know what you guys think, give me some suggestions or maybe you guys know better than me anyway. It's for this video. I'll be back soon for the hydraulic pump rebuild. He's right behind me. It turns out that rebuilding a hydraulic pump requires a little more than just putting new parts on it and putting it back together, so actually I've already been waiting for parts, uh, that's why I've been doing this for the last two weeks, so anyway Anyway I'll see you for the next video, thanks for watching guys.
