I Bought 64 CPU Cores From eBay For $400...

Jun 19, 2024
I

bought

64 CPU power

cores

on eBay for just over six dollars per core. Surely this will go well. Now I think these are the CPUs and then I think these may be the coolers and this is the motherboard that will house all the What's crazy, so let's open this up first. Oh yeah Shenzen, oh we have a rear IO shield that at least isn't the worst quality. It's got soft stuff on the back and kind of really nice cables. Thank you for finally arriving. Oh wow, oh no. the way we have a Ziploc antistatic bag, I don't think I've seen that before, look at that, oh look at that monster, now the first thing that hits you in the face when you see this motherboard are the two Gigantic sp3 sockets that house epic CPUs from AMD.

They are complex and incredibly massive sockets. Take a look at them below and you'll notice that each socket has eight Ram slots, giving us a total of 16. Oh, there's some useful information down here. I always filled Doom What are these connectors? I've never seen those before CPU one SATA zero to three oh that's cool when it comes to rear I/O we've got a port from the Mesozoic period and a bunch of Ethernet they've really gone all in on Ethernet here with that come on look what Epic CPUs we have to fill the sockets oh, never mind, this is a different box oh, the heatsinks are here too.

More Interesting Facts About,

I see, wow, it's a pretty beefy looking cooler, we've got five heat pipes, a decent fin stack, and a powerful looking fan, but the most important part is that this cooler is actually thick enough to satisfy an epic CPU. , something not many consumer coolers can say, so yes, I have two of these. Finally we have our huge CPU. I'm very excited to see this. let's do it, oh I wonder if this was factory packaging or not, it really looks like it isn't, but it's not a consumer grade product so I guess you never know, oh it also has a little Ziploc anti-static bag .

I really like it, oh. a tour and that's our CPU so this is a ryzen epic 7551 a 32 core 64 thread monster from 2016 that at launch cost almost three thousand dollars and I

bought

two of them for 400 on eBay so definitely They will work well abroad. Now comes the fascinating part where we see what it's like to assemble the CPU. Here we have these three bolts that we need to undo. I wonder if the iFixit kit will have that part. Actually, it seems that way. No way, that's all. Okay, so this is number one that we undo oh they just screwed one of them together.

It's good, very good. Oh, cover the plug now, as I understand it, just, oh no, no, wait, there's this bracket, ah, there we go, okay, slide it in like. that and then and on this one and then I think it's just cool and then we have an epic CPU mounted so we only have one more left and then we have massive amounts of external power and then when it comes to the CPU cooler I guess continue like this, obviously you need to apply thermal paste. I think I'm going to make a cross and then some dots to see if it catches fire, clearly it does.
It's not enough and then we just put this bad boy next. I just want to see if it works, so I'll leave a single RAM module per CPU to plug into a power supply and pray to Thor that it works. turned on and the men will worry about filling all the RAM channels. I don't know where I will find other RAM for this. Now for the first boot I'm going to try out some of these jadak Rams that Patriot sent over just to see. If it works with non-ECC memory, I don't see why it wouldn't, but you never know with this kind of thing and after very non-precariously removing the m.2 separator to be able to mount some storage on this guy bad and placing a CMOS battery.
I was ready to try this monster, so now I just need a graphics card to put it here. I think I'll keep it in the family, you know, so I'll use an AMD. GPU   oh oh, because of the length of the graphics card, it hits them and then doesn't suck them. That's stupid. I hope it works on this lower one. Let's try it, ah yes, that fits very well. Oh, it looks promising. Things are lighting up. in some places I just need to figure out how to... oh I think this is the front, oh that's under the graphics card, alright after spending quite a bit of time trying to boot this Abomination it became clear that it was not a fast boot , if I do not do it.
I don't know, this doesn't seem to be working, oh, it doesn't respond to power at all, even without RAM. I don't know if the server hardware is different or not, but that's not a good sign, but with a little research I identified it. a possible solution, ah, okay, such a big problem. I didn't do enough research to watch this video, which is pretty normal, that's usually the case, except it's server stuff, so the problems are much bigger than with consumer hardware apparently, but the problem here it could be that this motherboard only supports ECC Ram so none of the RAM I have will work on this motherboard and the problem is complicated by the fact that each of the RAM slots is a channel so for me run these CPUs that are like memory full   Bounce with I'm going to have to buy 16 units of ECC RAM so this cheap mini core setup is getting ruinously expensive really fast now I don't know that's the problem, I feel even without RAM , we should at least spin the fans or something, but it's not a consumer motherboard so I don't know and either way, I'll eventually need the RAM anyway, so yeah, with that, let me go to the go bankrupt buying Ram ECC quickly.
Yes, the massive amount of ECC Ram has finally arrived. I'm not 100% sure it will actually work on this system because it doesn't have specific compatibility listed, but let's give it a try. I can't believe all this is happening. on a system, I don't know, I feel like they need to start putting some RGB on this shitty server, I don't know what that sounds like to you, this is what 256 gigs of RAM on 16 channels looks like Very cool, I really hope it turns out turn on now. I also upgraded to a smaller graphics card and this one is an AliExpress RX 5700 in the top slot oh, it still doesn't work oh, I think the graphics card ran out uh uh, desperation grows.
I even consulted the manual like some kind of loser, but I still couldn't get it to work, so I decided to definitely not check. tedious process of removing all 700 RAM and CPU modules and so on to see if I could figure out what wasn't working. Oh no, wow, clearly I need to rethink my less than ideal thermal paste application, although that wouldn't be the reason. the system wasn't booting, it would just catch fire while Cinemage was running, but let me remove this CPU and see if we can get it to work with just one. The CPU looks good, apart from a small blemish here, but no.
I don't know, I can't tell, but it still doesn't work, let me change the only remaining Ram device, no that doesn't work either, okay, it still didn't work, so I think the next thing I'll do is change the CPUs in this socket oh , I'm very worried to see what the thermal paste application situation will look like down here, we're going to be a little bit better than the other one, actually now I don't want to drag this out too much. I spent the next couple of hours trying every combination of CPU socket and I socket RAM and just couldn't get it to work.
I didn't progress one bit. At one point we had some fans spinning, but that was it, but it helped me get to the goal. I came to the conclusion that one of the CPUs is definitely dead, the other maybe dead, and the motherboard maybe dead. After that, I decided to take the entire setup to a local recycling store where the owner and I spent some time testing out all of their various ECCs. The RAM stays here and we couldn't run it either, so Kevin and I came to the conclusion that this suspiciously cheap server hardware I bought on eBay just doesn't work, it's broken, so that's all I have for you.
Today I am in talks with the seller who insists that it is working, so they are sending a special RAM kit that they say will definitely work with it, but once I see that it doesn't work, I will still make a concerted effort to Get a setup like this running from eBay parts, so subscribe to the channel if you don't want to miss that video coming out in the next few months when you can, but for the foreseeable future this didn't work. So with that, thank you very much for watching another useless video and uh, yeah, until next time, bye.
