May 31, 2021
(thuds) - Oh, no. That? It's just a bunch of, (gasps) Hey! Hi guys, I'm Austin. And today we're going to make a video on how to spend money on Amazon for $200. Although, my friends, this definitely won't be a

waste

of money at all. So if for some reason you're not familiar, the Sony Walkman was essentially the iPod of the day. Although, really, kids know what iPods are, right? You did a good job on this, I'm already excited and we just watched the video. 1984, so we used a Visa, and this cost $105.47. I haven't listened to a cassette since I was probably about 10 years old.

I know that our car, when I was a kid, only had a cassette player, and my mom used to play all kinds of cassettes. So the interesting thing about this is that if I actually open it up, very gently from the side, not only do we have our cassette player, but if you look here at the door, this guy will actually have a full FM radio. radio and all the electronics integrated into the door, because of course it is. Close it and then if I plug in headphones, oh. (static hiss) I mean, okay. So, we should turn on the tape.

And then we have to choose the normal tape type and then does it have Dolby? I don't think so, right? I don't even think they make tapes with Dolby noise reduction anymore. (clicking rhythmically) Hey, for a cassette, that sounds pretty good. I'm very loud, aren't I? Look at this thing, I mean, this thing is 10 years older than me, actually it's even more, no, it's almost 10 years older than me. And yet, it looks basically flawless and if you pair it with a decent pair of headphones, it really doesn't sound bad. (thuds) - Hey! Wait a minute, wait, wait, wait.

So, I've taken a look at the Porta Pros. What I haven't seen is the wireless edition. And then a new Walkman. You really planned this well, good job sir. First of all, how much do they cost? Because I know the old Porta Pros are pretty cheap, right? - $80. - $80, okay. If you're not familiar, the Koss Porta Pros are legitimately retro headphones. I mean, they've been selling them for years and years and years. And these are essentially the same headphones, they just added Bluetooth too. What I don't know is the Sony NW-A45 Walkman. So unlike our cassette Walkman, this one will be able to play MP3, FLAC, AAC files and will all run from a microSD card.

And it also supports Bluetooth, so we have full aptX. I assume this is supported by aptX, right? Wow, yes, Walkmans have definitely changed. This actually looks a lot like an iPod. It's funny talking about iPods, because Apple doesn't make them anymore. And is that a proprietary connector? Of course it is. Of course, Sony can't ship microUSB or USB-C. They have to use some weird PSP-like connector. Open these guys up and we see, oh, it actually comes in a carrying case. These are our Porta Pros. Now, when talking about '80s-looking headphones, it's hard to imagine anything that looks much more retro than this.
And this is really well built. It feels nice. It really surprises me that they still make Walkmans. Boom, okay, we're connected via aptX and Bluetooth. Alright, let's go straight to the retro zone. Let's go to our track list, folders, SD card, Hotel California, try it. I will say that the bass is going to be a little heavy for these guys, so it won't be a super neutral sound, you will definitely hear a lot of impact. Especially with a song like this, I can hear that there is a little lack of clarity in the treble. But we must keep in mind that we are using Bluetooth.
This is a more retro style sound. I will say this is nonsense. These headphones are great when you have them plugged in. The wireless option seems like an afterthought. I mean, yeah, I'm sure they didn't want to ruin the look of it, so I'm sure they didn't want to integrate it somewhere else, but I feel like these could have been put in here, or something, that's how it feels, I don't know. Rokform, beyond protection. Rokform, that name sounds familiar. That? Is this a bumper? Wait. The case of the predator. Alright, we just went from being super cool and having really cool stuff to what is, I'm almost certain, a

waste

of our money.
How much is this? - $120. -$120, I assume it's an iPhone case? - Yes. - Back to reality. How is a $120 iPhone case going to be worth it? So with that, do we have a protective case for my phone? So I don't get it, I mean, it's magnetic. But it keeps the sides of the phone completely unprotected. I mean, okay, let me be honest here. It's metal, it will probably protect your phone. It won't protect your phone from scratches, but maybe a drop? It looks pretty good, you're definitely showing off a lot of the phone? Wow, mysterious.
A totally black box. A 10.1-inch portable Blu-ray player? That? Wait, they make these? Wow. Well? It seems very high quality. How much was this? - $180. -$180? Dude, wait, wait, okay. So the idea with the portable DVD player is that it's going to be something you can watch on some sort of crappy screen when you're in the car or something, but a Blu-ray looks a lot better. And if you pay a lot more, it better have a good screen. There we go, that's it, yeah. (laughs) 1024 x 600 high resolution. You know, barely above what you can get on a DVD?
Great, great, this is going to be terrible. Yuck! Yuck! That? Wait. (tearing the plastic) Oh man, that's what I like the most. Cheap shiny plastic. That? Because? Because? Yo, aw man. Okay, I get it, if you're watching the video, you're going to rotate it. But that, that feels really bad. I mean, I'll say one thing. The speakers are actually not terrible, the sound is fine. It looks like a super cheap tablet, like a $100 tablet or something. I mean the screen isn't unusable, I wouldn't mind sitting down and watching a movie about this. Especially with the speakers, but it won't be very impressive.
I'm also very curious about the battery life. I think with a Blu-ray drive it probably won't last as long. I'm afraid of what's coming after me right now. Oh, it sounds heavy, what is it? Oh, okay, this is much more confusing, because this is what I first saw, what is this? Now I really ask, what is this? Solar powered tiki. Why did you get this? I will say that since you have the Walkman, this is forgiven, but it's up there with the ball bearing and the robo dinosaur for some of the silliest things we've ever seen in Mystery.
Technology. Well, another mysterious looking box. Well, there is a Fuji Instax film. Okay, I think I know where this is going. Oh, it's a printer. Oh, I don't know where this is going at all. So the last time we had Instax at Mystery Tech, it was for that weird thing, like a phone scanner, where you put your phone on top of it and basically took a photo of your phone's screen. But this is a printer, but on instant film. So setting this guy up is pretty easy, you just need to turn it on and connect it via wifi to the app and theoretically we just need to add this movie and it will be good to go.
And you can also zoom in, you can set filters, but I just want to print it like this. Alright, do we have our film printed? I really don't know how to describe that. I'm really curious to know how something like this works. Typically with a lot of these mobile printers, it'll be something like ZINK, but it's printing on actual film. So I'm curious if maybe there's a screen inside or something to expose the film. I mean, you can see that it's obviously going to need a little bit of time to finish processing, but it actually looks pretty good.
It's nothing like the last printer we looked at, which literally just took a photo of your phone screen. This seems to be a bit higher quality. It's quite nice and I also like the square film, it will be much bigger than the regular Instax. It's a little expensive, it's a little pricey, but it's actually pretty legit. I must say, good job. Oh! You have us Labo! Friend, I think for the first time this is going to be a moment of waiting. I really feel like Labo deserves his own video, rather than a quick little look at Mystery Tech.
Anyway, as always, if you want to see any of this, the links will be in the description. And if you really want to see a Labo video, tweet @kenbolido, make a Labo video. He will really love it and will definitely encourage me to make a full video as soon as possible. So yeah, tweet Ken. Let him know all his thoughts and everything he thinks, life and stuff.
