Apr 19, 2024
Hi, I'm Stephanie Woods, welcome back to my channel. Today we were talking about all things

foot

rolled

hem, so we all know there is more than one way to roll a hem and for most of my

sewing

life I have always chosen the longer and more painful ways to do it. do it because, oh no, I guess I was too cheap to buy the

rolled

hem flip-flop, but at Christmas I thought, no, I'm going to treat myself to that. I think it was like no, it wasn't that much, not even I. I don't know why in my head I always think this is going to be more expensive than it is, but I was making my Christmas dress, so I really wanted to try a rolled hem for the ruffle I put at the bottom.

Now I basically just want to roll up all the stuff all the time and for those of us in the northern hemisphere who are watching spring and summer approaching, I mean obviously it's going to be different depending on where you are, but we're getting into the tank top season flowy skirts nice, light things made of a nice light fabric so we don't starve to death and I thought, well, maybe this is a really good time to go over all the things you can do with your rolled hem.

foot

how to use it tips and tricks get the best results all rolled hems so let's do it first of all let's talk about our tools more specifically the feet so you can see this one has a six the other one has a for those who don't They are numbered but I'll show you what those numbers mean so there are these little grooves on the back of all of these these are the bottoms and that's the groove that's supposed to allow the rolled hem to go through so this It is six millimeters wide four. millimeters wide and these two or three millimeters wide and that corresponds to the numbers that are at the top here now now these two are both three millimeters and the biggest difference between these two is that this one has a much wider area to let the needle work So if you were going to do a scalloped edge or something like that, which we're about to get to, you'd want to use this one because your needle would end up breaking on this foot, so other than that, that's the only difference that I can.

I've always been able to see between the two, so it's got a little bit more of an edge up on the back here, but I don't know, I don't know if you know of any reason why a set would need to come in three millimeter feet other than that, like me i wonder why you don't always have that one and not worry about this one but then when i see the sets of three they are usually like the one that has a narrower needle cut out so when you look at them online or in a store make sure you pay attention I've linked them below in case you're interested and it's an affiliate link the other part of the anatomy that we need to look at is we need to look at that cone over there so there's kind of a cone and then there's something like this little arm right here, so the cone is obviously what helps the fabric curve, but that little arm, if you don't hook the fabric under that little arm correctly, that too It will cause you some problems, so we will see how to do all this.

It takes a little time to really master it, if you feel like you need it for a dress you're supposed to wear to a wedding tomorrow, maybe choose a different type of hem, give yourself some time to really learn. Otherwise, this is one of those things that will be frustrating and then you may never try again before moving on, although let's talk about other tools, which is why a lot of people swear by having tweezers to help get the fabric into the I I prefer the cone properly and everything I can stick on the fabric and manipulate the fabric that way or I can just stick it and follow the cone to drag the fabric so that's what I use go ahead I mean try it. you both see what works for you, I mean really even like a pair of hemostats like this, like the medical hemostats, I use them to thread my serger, they might even be useful, I mean, you really just have to find what works for you. you, so Right now I'm going to show you what works for me, so the first thing I do is I just press the rolled hem into place with my fingers because the first few stitches you're going to sew without it going through the funnel of the foot, so I I press down and then put it under my foot.

Now I'm going to do a few stitches forward and then a few stitches back just to start that seam, then I'm going to lift my foot and pull the fabric up. that comb, then I'm going to take it all and I'm just going to trace inside the funnel to get my fabric through. It's a little complicated, I mean, it's a little complicated anyway, it's really complicated when you have a camera in the way. your face and your foot, but yeah, keep pulling on it, the really big key is to go around that bar that's inside the funnel, that's what it's going to look like when it's there and looks can be deceiving, so remember how I said there is such a thing. . bar inside the funnel, well it's right here and you can see how the edge of my fabric runs completely against that bar, if at any point the fold of your fabric is pulled back and it doesn't run against that bar, you're going to have problems , this is where people get frustrated because it will look like everything is in and then you'll start

sewing

, the first few stitches will be great and then everything will go to waste after that, so if you get the edge of your fabric that goes all the way around the length of that bar, you are golden, everything will work out fine for you once it's all together.
I can put my foot down and I just pre-bend it in front of my foot as I step through it, it's just going to ensure that you get a really good hand because it really is a pain to have to go back and undo and do it all over again, so it gives you a lot more possibilities to have a really good finish and that's all there is to it. It's just the carelessness of putting it in your foot that can cause problems for people. Now you can notice that on the other side of my fabric I have a sort of scalloped edge.
The process to do it is exactly the same as us. I've done it here, except I'm going to choose a different stitch, which is this one, the blind hem stitch, so go ahead and play with that stitch and run with your tension as you do it because you'll get a little different look depending on which one. be your tension so here are my completed seams you can see the nice finish I got on my flat rolled hem and here is the scalloped edge with the blind hem stitch you can see how I followed the line I increased my tension to so you can see there's a little bit more gathering and a little bit more gathering towards the end of that strip, so you really play with that and see what it shows.
