turn

ed his very bad leash pull into a beautiful heel job, he owned it. I am very happy that he is back with us today to work on his next biggest problem, which is his retirement. Now you can walk him charmingly to heal him again, as I do with all my clients. It is a

turn

ing point, it takes walking

your

That already happened to them but now what they want to do is be able to venture outdoors and be able to have it reliable with a good resource. and not only be able to take him on a walk very well lead, but they can start to venture out and let him have a little fun without the leadership, so that's what we're going to start working on today and as is always the case when it comes working on the retreat, usually if someone comes to me with an adult dog with memory you're more standard signs and gritty gum type markers and all that kind of stuff is screwed up the dog has spent a lot of time in this case years knowing that that command of Sandy comes sometimes you can listen sometimes you can Not so, what we are going to do is start the process of moving it to a whistle and when we can move it to a whistle and guarantee 100 success, then we can take the whistle through the roof in terms how exciting it is. and that absolutely means you have to come back to me 100 of the time when you hear the whistle blow, so what I'm going to do is with all of these cases bring it back.

I have it on my long glide line and I'm going to start developing that concept of coming to me that ends in a reward, that's all I want you to understand in this first part of the session, then I can start adding the whistling and making sure he understands that a whistle is a cue for that behavior that I want him to come back to me with and it always ends in a very nice and tasty treat, lots of praise and good, positive things happen once we have built. That base layer, which is kind of the goal of today's session, then we layer it with additional distractions, start taking dogs out, work on that when there are dogs around and then we can go out to different places, new sights, smells, sounds and , eventually, we take. the start and we can retrain that retreat 100 positively with a whistle, so again we'll start that concept if he's doing his thing now, but Sandy, come on, oh yeah, oh, good boy, good boy, thank you, good boy, and after?

What I'm going to do is Sandy Break, just let it have a little bit of free space, this is beautiful and because it's already going to start to build that concept of "Oh, there could be something good here and you don't need tons of space to do this, I'm just going to give him some space and this is a

perfect

opportunity, Sandy, come on, yeah, oh good boy, oh good boy, thank you, oh good boy, oh yeah, I'm really layering my trifecta of rewarding desirable behavior. , he gets food rewards, he gets physical praise and petting, and he gets a vocal inflection, that baby, oh yeah, good boy, vocal inflection that gets the endorphins in a dog's mind going, especially when you combine that vocal inflection with a treat job all over the board when they hear that vocal inflection those kind of endorphins and that adrenaline will go through and make it a fun, excitable, positive experience and that's what I want from companion dogs, we're not

training

dogs of work, all I want is for you to be excited to come to me when I ask, so again he sat lovely there, Sandy, come, yes, very good boy, oh good boy, oh good boy, praise, food, Vocal inflection, physical touch, everything that always wants to come back to me is a great and exciting opportunity, now I'm kind.

I knew I would be good at this and that I would learn it very quickly without distractions, so I'm going to practice this a couple more times and focus on Sandy instead of commenting to the camera, the camera will do it. roll, we could do a time lapse or just fast forward, but I'm not going to do anything different than what I just did, probably 10 minutes just loading this marker and loading this queue coming at me, yeah, good guy. something good, exciting and positive, Sandy, come on, yeah, good guy, that was lovely, so I'll just stick to a little comment there, so it was probably the first time in the seven or eight repeats we did that he decided not to do it. .
It comes right back to me and that's the beauty of having a long tail. I gave him the chance, he didn't listen and then I guided him a little bit with main pressure just to have that, oh yeah, sorry boss, I'm on my way. and then I'll pay you when he comes back eventually, if he performs that way, he won't get the food, the praise and the vocal inflection. I'm going to guarantee success, you might get one of three things. but over time he will only be completely freed from the trifecta of success if he comes to me with pip in his step as soon as I ask and we increase that commitment and that excitement because I don't want you to. come back to

your

time i want you to come back to me again and again using a long line allows us to guarantee that success because that's exactly where the recovery goes wrong if i was doing that not on a long line i asked for that behavior and he ignored me i lost and since he is there, I have no way to control that variable.
A long line allows me to control the variable, so get Sandy Gum. He ignored some pressure, yeah, good guy, so I'm still paying him. at this stage because I want him to build that concept, but as I said over the days and then weeks of drilling this, the payment probably wouldn't have come for that one and would only come when he made that really quick decision. Sandy, come on, yeah. oh good boy, yeah, so that was a good one, so you'll get all of me on that one oh good boy, what a good boy, yeah, and again just leveling up, leveling up, practicing it, so now I'm going to go back to drill.
So we've been practicing that rep for 10 minutes and you can see that now he's super engaged with me. I love this. This is beautiful. He wants to work. We've made it fun. I have become exciting. There's only been a couple of times where I've had to use a lower pressure to go in, just wind it up and then it creates this momentum, this excitement, that's exactly what we want to see, so now this is where the fun part begins. start transitioning to a whistle now doing this is a very simple process and we are redirecting something that he already knows a little bit, we have started to build that which comes to me as a good thing and we are I'm going to start loading a new queue of the whistle, so you have to be delicate and timely to do this right.
What I want to do is make sure I have enough space. I'm going to use that command and have him come to me. and then when it comes, I'll do two point reps on my whistle, so for me, remembering that two points is just one of those things, they're like signs, you can have whatever you want, but if you want to make it advanced. I work with the hiss, you can put extended whistles on one thing, one whistle means one, three means another constant whistle, it means something else, it's just another way to cure behavior, for me, I remember, it's a hole, so what you're going to notice is that I'm going to get him to come towards me and then I'm going to put two pips on him as he comes towards me, repeats of two pips again and then you just have to go back to work on the drilling, that sets him up for success and making let him come to me. two points and what that will start to do in your mind is associate the two points of my whistle, which means it's coming towards me because something good is about to happen and you're about to get some treats, some praise, some inflection. vocal, eventually as with any type of behavior we are essentially attracting and queuing the behavior, eventually we can start to remove the law that makes him come to me and then we are left with just the queue which will be pit pit means yes come to Me because that behavior is about to be marked and rewarded and praised so those are the expectations now so this is a

perfect

example.
I wanted to do it because it's with a dog that is somewhat committed to taking him to the end of a long line. It's often quite difficult and we have it, so the cameraman is going to show very carefully because as soon as we do a funny move, he will go there, come on, that was always going to happen Batman, that's beautiful, he goes towards the cameraman. so Sandy, come on, yeah, oh, good boy, what a good boy, what a good boy, oh, beautiful, that was beautiful, absolutely brilliant, so again, well, it's a beautiful opportunity. I'm going to wait for him to get close to the cameraman and then Sandy, come on, Sandy, yeah, oh. beautiful boy a beautiful boy yes what a good boy oh yes oh yes excellent and again this is making him very motivated he is getting excitable but I don't care that in reality I really want it to be a fun and exciting process you are too smart you are a smart boy , so again let's set it up to have a wonder: You could do this with a partner.
I'll have my cameraman try to get some of his attention. I'll try to keep her attention when I get there that's beautiful that's all then I'm going to bring her Sandy come yeah oh good boy oh good boy you're so smart oh you were smart boy yes you were smart boy oh you were smart boy again the trifecta verbal inflection vocal inflection praise physical praise dogs love a good russell oh gosh good boy and then the food pays that's really wonderful behavior and again we're going to cut it here because I'm just going to do what I can with Sandy being so impulsive.
I'm going to get another five ten minutes of this. I'm just putting the reps to work to set you up for success, praising that success, but the most important thing is that really loading the pit pip queue means getting to me as quickly as possible. as much as possible because I promise you that something good is going to happen and if you don't, I have a long line just to remind you to come back, get it going and as soon as you start making that decision, any tension or pressure on you will be goes on the leash and draws him back in with vocal inflections, praise and food, so we've been digging that now, five or ten minutes, he's really getting it, you can start to notice that it's actually the sound of the whistle, which is very common in dogs.
Especially the hunting dogs, it seems to get them excited, energized and eager to go, it's a wonderful thing, so again, what I'm going to start doing now is you're going to see this happen for the first time. We're coming to the end of a session, we're getting close to 30 minutes, which is how long I'd like this session to get gritty all day, so we're going to do three of these sessions in one day and then we'll give it some time to play and then have a good time to decompress, relax and prepare for the next session, but what I would really like to do here to finish on top is to be able to get him to come to me without the verbal cue. from the sand and replace it with just the whistle and see if it responds to just the whistle.
I think we are there again. That's what I have in mind. If you get a little confused, I can help you. expelled him because of all the work we have been doing with leader pressure and communication with the leader, that is not a punishment, it is just a method of communication that he now understands very easily, so it is just a way to help him Go, oh, okay, yeah, I get it. cool down and then again the pressure of the tension eases and we get back to being really positive, so again he's just staring off into the distance, which is lovely.
I'm going to try a very short one to start, take my advantage, so I prepared myself a little in case I need pressure oh yes oh good boy oh yes good boy Sandy that was so good you can even have two oh you're a good boy you're a good guy so again perfect I don't need pressure let's try again I love him I want him to just make the decision so I'm going to let him go and again sometimes with these things I just need a little patience again he's so engaged with me that he wants to work, but I want him not to be paying attention and then the only thing he's responding to is the hiss.
That way we'll know that we've captured the behavior and he's associating my two points, we've come to me instead of him associating me moving away or any type of hand gesture, so that would be very kind. I'm going to ignore it slowly. I'm going to hope he looks in the different direction. You are so intelligent? You are too smart. And then again. yes what you can do is obviously if you're doing this alone at home just patience waiting a moment oh yes that was perfect that was perfect oh good boy yes oh good boy oh yes oh amazing yes you can have a high value yes so that's where it comes in a food, a meat treat instead of a lower value kibble or a standard

training

treat.
I have descended to his level. I really let him know that it was wonderful. Yes, she is a good boy. Yes, you love her. Do that. It was beautiful that we clearly captured that behavior of his by associating that two points on a whistle means reaching me theas fast as you can because something good is about to happen. Does that mean he's recoil trained? Not what it means is that the foundations are there. being laid down so again we have probably five more minutes of this session we're just going to practice that so again I ask the cameraman to film it so he doesn't pay attention to me at all yeah oh good boy yeah. excellent, good boy, oh thank you Sandy, good boy, yes, a physical praise, a vocal inflection, a food reward, this is a wonderful thing.
Do you need to do that with everything you try to teach a dog? No, and I don't think you should want to save your euphoria. Assess that kind of intensity level for things that are very difficult for dogs or where they show exceptional behavior. Sandy recovery is very challenging, especially in high distraction environments, so you will get a jackpot from me for all three things when you come to me especially. when you do it now with a whistle because it's that kind of concept in his mind that I need to instill a low distraction so that when we're distracted and he says that, oh, there's a squirrel there and he hears that beep beep, I know it. he's heard it and he needs to be able to make that decision, I want to do that, but that's much more important, that's why we put a high value, a high reward when it comes to remembering, yeah, this is such a smart kid, such a kid. smart, yes. yeah, smart boy, oh smart boy, yeah, and there we go guys, it was really good to finish.
What I'm going to do is maybe get one more city, something really simple, yeah, oh, good boy, yeah, good boy and Sandy Break, and now. Free dog Sandy doesn't know the rest command, but we are shaping it with freedom, making him understand that it means go and do what you want. Now four more training sessions are finished. If I work with Sandy Moore, we'll actually do a formal break. with things like fresh, old manners, mealtime manners, things like that, but you're a good boy, I'm getting really attached to you, you're going to be wonderful, we'll absolutely get you there, so here we go guys, like I say.
He still really wants to work, but it's important that you finish on top. We have two more sessions today and those other two sessions will literally be what you just observed at the end of this last session, so the goal for today is To really get attention, he'll be back next week and then that's when I'll start bringing out other dogs and I hope to build the foundation today and then get him to really have a higher level of distraction two. days is not enough to achieve a perfect memory, but we can get him to remember perfectly when he is distracted, especially with other dogs, and we will work on it and then have some training sessions with the owner to teach him how to do it.
They can go and just put in the reps because at that point it's like I said, put in the reps in training. Things don't happen overnight with many behaviors, things like teaching a doctor what to cure. Yes, I can do that very quickly. Kind of like withdrawal is an ongoing process, but we're clearly making great progress today, aren't we buddy, we really start loading that whistle and then next week we start adding distractions. We'll see how it goes, but I have high hopes. for him because he is very eager to work and looks to me for guidance and direction.
He just needed a little bit of leadership and a little bit of that direction that he wants so much, that's why he's so eager and wants to keep working because he just lives for it, so yeah, it's a wonderful case to work with. I hope you enjoyed it if you have trouble remembering. This is a great way to get outside to reshape the memory, but put in the effort and you can get outdoors. and enjoy life with a wonderful dog like this one here
