Here's what you need: fabric for the outer layer, fabric for the lining, and a zipper. I said you can make them any size you want, but what usually determines the length of your bag is the length of your zipper. You can buy zippers at the fabric store. I find there are a lot of interesting options online, tons of colors. I love it. This one has a small ring post and gold zipper teeth. This is a 9 inch zipper which means it is 9 inches from the top of the pole to the stopping point. Now the total length of the tails is 10 and a half inches, so that's how long I'm going to cut my pieces and then the width is totally up to you.

I decided to make mine six and a half inches, it's a good average size so I cut all my pieces ten and a half by six and a half inches the fabric I'm using for the outer layer is this really cool metallic linen and sometimes I like to use upholstery fabrics, canvas fabrics that are a little bit heavier, give it a little bit of structure and make it a little bit sturdy. inside I'm using just a standard quilting cotton okay let's put this aside for a moment and let's layer our zipper bag start with one of the lining pieces and place it face up on the table grab the zipper and place it face up. on your table, line up this raw edge of the zipper with the raw edge of the fabric and on the ends there; now take the outside piece and turn it upside down to make a little zipper sandwich and line it all up perfectly and This type of project is one that you really want to be precise with.

I'm taking some wonderful little clips here. You can use binder clips. You could use pins, but I like that these hold it together really well. Take it, just find this. right here so keep everything in place until it's done so now if you've seen my previous video on how to sew a zipper you're one step ahead of the game but don't worry I'm going to follow all the steps . with you let's go to our sewing machine now what we're going to do is sew right along the side here we are using a zipper foot that comes standard with most sewing machines this is the one that comes with my Baby Lock machine and the La The reason this is important is that it allows us to get closer to the zipper while sewing without our foot getting in the way, so put it on your machine, okay, here we go.

The other thing I want to point out is this little pull at the top of the zipper that will actually get in the way when we start and stop sewing, if we were to sew right next to it our line would get wavy and it wouldn't look very good, so what we're going to do is start sewing. a little bit further, we'll sew it at the end and go to our machine. Now I'm using this little line on my presser foot to help guide me down, so I'm constantly sewing a straight line. I want to be precise with that hair so it looks really nice when you fold it over, make a little back stitch and then start sewing all the way to the end and make a little back stitch and then cut the threads.
I love this automatic. thread cutter on the machine, okay, let's open the zipper and see what it looks like. Oh, that's really beautiful. Now we need to finish this top part here, so just unzip the zipper a little bit like this and then go back and sew this initial part. do a back stitch again, just sew up to the place where we had started before, okay, see how it looks, there you have it, it looks beautiful, okay, let's sew the other side, now take the other pieces and make your sandwich In the same way, place the lining so that the fabric remains.
Face up on your table, take the zipper that now has the other fabric facing up. You can see that my zipper now goes in the opposite direction. Take the outer piece, place it so the fabric is facing down, and match them all together. Good, this time. We'll start from the beginning and stop when we reach that pole again. Let's go to your machine. Make a small back stitch and then sew down now. If you find that you are going too fast with the pedal, simply adjust it. your speed control here I think it's very important that you go slow here and be precise, it's not a very long distance to sew, so it's good that you take your time, as you can see, I'm coming back to this pole here, look there same.
I'm going to stop right here, then let's unzip again and keep the last part, okay, let's see how it looks, open up all these layers and look we just sewed like you're in place, that's really cool, okay, let's review. Our zipper looks fantastic and you can see the lining is on the other side. What we want to do is press everything open and we're going to sew a top stitch so it looks really nice now before we press on the specialty. Fabrics are always tested first to make sure they can withstand heat. I already tried mine and that's it.
I just want to remove these fabrics from the seam so they lay really nice and flat. It will look beautiful. It's important to always iron your seams, I know I always say that, but it's true, it will make your things look more professional and less homemade, okay, that looks

great

, now let's sew our top stitch, come to your machine and No. we need to worry about that pull this time because we'll be able to get around it, we're far enough away and then just use the presser foot again to guide it in a straight line until we get to the other thing.
What I'm going to do is increase the length of my stitch. I'm sewing it as a figure four just because I want an extra wide stitch and you might want to use an interesting thread color, it just depends on the look you're going for. plain old white because it matches the color of my zipper, just sew to the end and then do the same on the other side. Okay, we're done with the top seam. Now let's do some magic and turn this into a zipper bag the most important thing to remember in this whole project is to open the zipper at this point, if you don't you will never be able to open the bag in the end and that can deflate you a lot, so remember to open the zipper.
Okay, so take the two outer pieces and place them together. Take the two pieces of lining and place them together. Now you can see that it sticks out in the middle here from the zipper and the important thing is that the ends here can go in any direction. you could have them facing the outer layer or facing the lining, you want them facing the lining and that's really going to feel natural because of this top stitch that we sewed, so put them together, grab one of your Clips clamps and all together, okay? ? Same thing on the other side, this side is a little bit bulkier here because the zipper isn't open, but again push them to the lining side and hold them in place.
Okay, now that I have both sides, what I do next is that. Another important step is that we want to leave an opening in the linings that we can turn inside out. I'm going to use a couple of pins here to make it look different than my clips and remind me that this is my opening and you want it to be big enough that your hand can go through it so you can reach in and grab it and pull , then use the binding clips and just put everything back together, try to be precise here so everything matches. and if for some reason it doesn't match, like when we were sewing it just came out a little crooked, grab your scissors or a rotary cutter and just cut it all out and make sure it looks good before we sew it on, now what we do.
What you are going to do is start at the starting point and sew to the ending point. For whatever reason, you want to make sure that you trimmed and you didn't trim too much, so you're going to be stitching over these little metals. The piece says that if you use about 1/2 inch of seam allowance you won't, but if you ever go over these metal ends or the metal on the other side you will break the needle, so keep that in mind we are ready to do it. Let's say with a half inch seam allowance and I found my starting point, I do a little topstitching here and then I'll sew all around until I get to the stopping point, when you get to the corner, leave the needle in place.
Raise the presser foot, turn and continue sewing downwards, removing these clips as you go. I'm sure you remember that when you get to these seams here where the zipper is, go very slowly if for some reason there are a lot of bolts. For your machine, you can always use the crank and just turn a few times in that spot. Now that we're back at the stopping point, make a small back stitch and grab your scissors. We want to cut all these little corners, but it really sticks out. okay in the corner, I'm also going to trim these little ends where the zipper is just to get the volume that we can offer there so that the zipper is as flat as possible underneath now, at the moment that we've been waiting for, let's turn it over. from the right side outwards and this opening that we left, put your hand there and everything goes through now remember that if we had not opened the zipper there we would put our hand there and it would stop, it's good that we followed the steps correctly, okay?
Now at this point, you really want to make sure you punch out all of these little nooks as much as you can because once we sew the lining, it's very hard to get back in there. Well, the exterior looks fantastic. Now we have to close this opening. The easiest way to do it here is to just pop out these corners, although we're going to fill them in again on the inside, it just helps give it a straight line as you sew it. Okay, you can see we have this little opening here, those ends. Naturally I want to fold under, do it like this back on your machine, sew it in place, just sew until the opening is closed, make a little back stitch and tuck the lining in and tuck those corners into the corners of the outer layer.
