Jun 02, 2021
Today in the Detail Garage we will go over a detailed tutorial on how to

remove

swirl

marks

and scratches from vehicles of any color. Swirl

marks

and scratches are often the biggest spot that ruins the look of any car. This is because

swirl

marks and scratches diffuse light, make paint look old and sloppy, and dramatically reduce the gloss of any paint color. We will use a one-

step

polishing method to enhance the paint and erase swirls and scratches from the finish. To do that, we will use Chemical Guys VSS: Scratch & Swirl Remover. This new product uses advanced technology to cut like a compound and finish like a polisher.

product that works by hand or machine. We will use VSS with the TORQ 10FX Dual Action Polisher to refine the finish and restore this red paint. Let's start from the beginning and discuss the steps to

swirls and scratches. Before I polish this 370Z, I'll do a 50/50 split to show you the steps the pros take to get good results. First, we have to cover the surface with clay. The vehicle feels extremely rough and is covered in tree sap. I will use a medium clay bar from Chemical Guys to remove any contaminants on the surface.

Contaminants on the surface are anything such as overspray, rail dust, brake dust, industrial fallout, or pollution. It is important to remove it before polishing because it will reduce the cutting power of the machine. So remove those contaminants from the paint before you begin. Now that I have my clay bar prepared, we can go ahead and get started. We already washed this car today, but we have several other videos that break down the washing process. Now that the surface is clean, I'll use a quick detailing spray to saturate the surface. You can use clay lubricant or detailing spray for proper lubrication. I'll take my clay bar and gently rub the surface. This will remove all the contamination that is on the surface. There are two types of pollution: above-surface pollutants and below-surface pollutants. Below-surface contaminants are things like stains, etchings, and any contamination that isn't on the surface when the paint feels smooth. Contaminants on the surface are things like rail dust, overspray, bird droppings, and any industrial contaminants that are attached to the paint.

You can see that my clay bar is already turning brown because I'm removing the contamination to make the paint feel smooth. On our website, ChemicalGuys.com, we carry a wide selection of clay bars and clay gloves, so if you are looking for the right clay bar or glove for your application, visit our website to find the right tool for his work. I prefer the clay bar because it is easy to grip and adapts to all surfaces. I don't want to forget the bottom panel. Now that I have the surface completely clayed and decontaminated, I'm going to store my clay bar inside the container to make sure it doesn't get dirty.
Next, take a premium microfiber towel to dry the surface. Now that I've applied clay to the surface, I'll feel it with my bare hand to make sure there's no contamination left behind. This paint feels glass smooth and is ready to be polished. Let's start with the polishing process. Just for you watching at home, I'm going to put a 50/50 line of tape to show the before and after. That way you can easily see the difference on the screen. When you're buffing any type of paint, you don't need to apply tape this way. This is for demonstration purposes only.
Now let's start polishing. My tool of choice is the TORQ 10FX Dual Action Polisher. You can use a rotary polisher or any type of machine you choose. I'm using a dual action buffer because it will minimize the amount of pressure and work on the paint. Only the dual action polisher can perform one-step polishing. That's where we cut like a compound, but finish like a polish. When polishing was becoming widespread, the industry standard was to perform a two- or three-step job. That's where you use a compound, a cutting polish, and then a finishing polish. The new abrasive technology found in VSS Scratch & Swirl Remover allows us to polish in one step because the abrasive breaks down for a finer finish.
This is an important advance to get the details done much faster. I'll plug in my machine and prepare my notebook. I'm going to use an Orange Hex-Logic cutting pad. You can also use a green, white, or microfiber cutting pad for this job. I'm going to use an orange cutting pad because it will cut more swirls and scratches. This car was built in 2011, but has heavy swirls and scratches throughout the vehicle. So let's deal with that today. Now that I have the pad placed in the machine, I will take the scratch and swirl remover, shake it up, and press 5 to 6

spots

on the pad.
Machine polishing provides better and faster results than hand polishing. I'll also use some detail spray to lubricate and prepare the pad for a smooth start when buffing. I'll polish this area here, then we'll inspect the work if it needs more polishing, and then I'll show you the results. I will spread the polish on speed 1 and then turn it up to 6 to make sure the polish breaks down and removes all the swirls. Now that we're done polishing, I'm going to remove the excess polish. Scratch & Swirl Remover works so well that you only have to use a little polish, and when you're done there should barely be any polish left to remove.
This is because the compound breaks down and ends up as a polish. Now I'll remove the tape, take the car out into the sun and show you the before/after difference. Now you'll see how well Scratch & Swirl Remover removes swirls, scratches and oxidation from any color. We'll take the car out to show you the difference! Now you've seen the results we got with a one-step polish using VSS Scratch & Swirl Remover. We removed all swirls and scratches and achieved approximately 95% defect removal. Additionally, we restore a deep, warm shine to the red paint. When we remove all swirls and scratches, we improve the reflectivity of the paint.
