How To Paint Your Wheels Gloss Black

Jun 05, 2021
Hello youtube and welcome to this episode of the gunslinger so this video is number four in the transformation of my little corolla from a boring old standard red roof to a

black

roof and all the trimmings including the

wheels

which is what we're doing in this video here, so it doesn't really matter if you haven't seen those other videos, if you only find this video as the first in the series, it doesn't really matter much what order you watch them in. the videos that way, so yeah, the first thing you should do when you're spraying

your

wheels

is, to begin with, for the first two months beforehand, don't put any

black

tires on, so don't put them on too, I mean.

Don't use any silicone-based tire black. There are some average water based tire blacks that really don't work very well. In reality, only the silicone-based ones give you that nice shine and also the protection of

your

tires, but I mention it because silicones are a contaminant for car

paint

; in fact probably most

paint

s but yes if you don't clean them properly you will get these fish eye effects all over the paint so do your best not to apply. for a couple of months before the day you plan to spray them or have someone else spray them and even then when you take them to the paint shop, give them a very good rating, which is what you saw.

I do it at first if you have a well set up pressure washer then that is ideal. I personally don't have one set up in the paint shop. I wish I had it, but we only have one on the tray in the entire panel shop. where I'm working here and I always seem to get overpowered so I just gave up and ended up using the little brush like you saw me and the fire hose which is what I was using so it worked and as you'll see In this video here I don't even I got no silicone reaction so that was a good thing.

It's always one of the biggest things I keep in mind when spraying wheels, but to be honest, I never get fish eyes because it's something. That's what I'm cautious about, as long as you follow those steps, give him good grades, it could give him a really good preparation. Sold if you can feel a little greasy when you're doing the prep work. Get a thinner cloth. and normally you should be pretty good with a solid prep two or three times and what you saw me spraying from the beginning was it was actually a triple 2 and what is an adhesion promoter so if you're ever unsure of your prep work or if you're ever in a rush like I was on this specific job here, that adhesion promoter really comes in handy, so if there's some little bright spot that you've overlooked, it'll still bite through and give you a good accession. and make sure your paint isn't going to chip later on the track, so look, I usually do my best to get rid of all those shiny spots, but look, there are a couple of reasons why this is my own car and I will do whatever I want and that's why I won't get paid for this, it's my own time and I actually started it, but actually yeah, at five o'clock, I think I have to work.
how to paint your wheels gloss black
I woke up at 4:30 and got to work at five and what you see me doing here must have been like three in the afternoon of the same day so I had already been at work for quite a while and I just wanted to go home I was naked and tired and really in no mood to spend an extra 20 minutes on each tire just to prep them. I was like, "You know what I'm going to sand them, give them a quick sandpaper and just throw a travel coat on top and be done with this, so I apologize because almost the entire base coat stage is gone so I don't know where the pictures went." , since I say I was pretty tired that day, the battery might have died, I can't really remember exactly what happened to be honest, usually when that happens I can watch the video and I would cancel it, but actually this is part of a. larger set of videos that as I mentioned at the beginning is working all the blackouts on my car, the roof, the wheels, the trim and all that so I decided to continue with this video as I say mainly because it is part of a set. of larger videos, so a couple of other things I'd like to do.
A quick mention as well is that the gun I was using at the beginning hasn't gotten a review on the channel yet, but I have it in the video and I actually only have it. to do the voice-over to make it so. It will be available soon but that's the iwata w300, a bit of a fun gun, not my favorite mini gun, it's a great quality gun but to be honest it doesn't take out enough material so for a set of rims like this it's just a little bit too slow for the clear coat that I used in this job, which is clear like quartz glass, it's a really very thick clear coat, so it's a scratch resistant clear coat and it gets pretty thick and Because the w 300 just applies so thin, such a thin film is a pretty fine atomization and fine spray fan.
For some reason I just don't find it that good for a clear coat, especially on larger areas, so this gun here is more of a midi gun. The gun I'm using here to clean up the job is the Sergola mini extreme 1.2 and this stuff, as you can see, it has a reasonably sized fan, it's not too big, but it really pumps out a little more material. so it's a weapon I'm sure to use on my own tires when I wanted to get out of there too. I mean, if I really had that little bit of extra time, I'm sure I could have made the w300 work, but as I mentioned before, I was just at the time of day where I think, man, I want to get out of there and I don't have time. for that w300 and I'm not going to lie look this isn't the best set of rims I've ever painted it's just a continuation of the video set up to be honest and look I don't care it's my own car there's a little bit of orange peel on them, a little more than usual to be fair.
Honestly, like I said, this clear coat is a little thicker than usual, so it's a little harder to get it to lay flat, and in fact, I've noticed that it doesn't seem to flow, like it stays where you are. Put it so I was using a faster, stronger method and it was a hot day so it probably didn't help, but other than that, I love the scratch resistance properties of this material. I have tried to polish it several times and if you don't. If you go up to 5000 it will really give you a bit of a headache with polishing but every coin has two sides so the fact that it dries so hard and is so hard to polish is fine in my mind says it will be a little more durable, won't scratch when you wash it, as easy as possible and will be something that will last a little longer so I think it will be less prone to stones but time will tell and this is another thing I thought about including at the end of this video, so there's a corner piece that sometimes you just understand I don't know, there's more dust in that little corner than on the entire ceiling, mark my In words, there were like two or three spikes on the entire panel off the roof of my car and I think I have like a hundred on that little piece in the corner, but that's okay, it was the easy little part of just making the layer flow and like you look here, I thought I'd take the little touch up brush and going over the Toyota emblem and yeah, using the body color on that, but yeah, I think that was a cool little touch, it's subtle but it looks cool to me and it's one of those things that yeah, I don't know about, I can be proud.
I actually just got to work, I think it was like an hour before and I just sat down and did a little touch up and then I think I cleared them up. my lunch break and then I took them home and couldn't wait. I think so, this was on Monday, so I sprayed the rest of the card, like the wheels and body, on Saturday and then arrived on Monday, very excited, an hour early. and I did the little touch ups on those wheels, I prepped them and then on my lunch break I went in and gave them a couple coats of varnish, which is what you see from time to time, I couldn't wait to get home and put them on in the car that night so there will still be a couple more videos in this set of videos so there will be one that actually removes the halo effects and I guess technically that video should have appeared first because I removed it before putting the . black on, but it's all good, it's not really going to matter if you look at that one out of sequence.
I actually talked to my friend earlier who was looking at it like he was a painter too and he's like, man, let's leave that thing for dead. flat so I'm really excited to do it, in fact we're going to ridge sand everything and then we're going to make that roof as flat as a sheet of glass so I'm really looking forward to that show. What to say and we are also going to make a video about it. In fact, I also recently bought a flex d, a cordless dual action polisher, so it's crazy and I'm going to do a review on that and I'll also use it in the next few videos, so yeah, there's plenty of reasons to stay , hang out and subscribe to this channel to say that there will be many good videos in the future.
