The first thing to do when you are preparing to

paint

baseboard

s is to clean the

baseboard

. I just use warm water and then once it's dry you can start filling the nail holes. when it dries it will turn white so I just put a little on the nail holes and then also where the miter is for the quarter round then when it is dry in about 15-20 minutes it will turn white then you can take some fine sandpaper and sand it smooth just fill in the miter crack so this edge has been here a while and it was never filled or

paint

ed white and the quarter round was added later that the putty turned white so you want to take some sandpaper just some light grit sandpaper this is 180 grit and just lightly sand the rough areas of the putty off the putty smooth than smooth where the nail holes were if there are any other spots on the edge you can just smooth those areas too sometimes there are just a few rough areas and after smoothing them out just take a damp rag again and wipe the dust off so that after it the edge is nice and dry what you want to do is use a white paintable caulk get to the English side here so it's a bright white paintable caulk and I like to just fill in the little crack that happens when the quarter lap sits against the baseboard so it just removes that crack so what you want to do is just take a very small little bead run it along the length of the baseboard and then just take your finger and smooth out now you'll also want to do it all the way to the part top where it meets against the wall if you are going to paint the wall as well so same thing just to get rid of the little grip the little gap between the baseboard and the wall to make it look nice nice and clean take your finger to smooth it out and then you want that to uh to dry so you probably want to leave it for a couple hours before you go and primer now that the caulk is nice and hard nice and dry you want to apply a little bit of primer i like to use the target the product zinzer bullseye123 is a great primer so what we'll do is layer this on so you just want to smooth it out nice and smooth make sure you get a decent brush spend some money on the brush because you'll definitely get what you pay for you just want put a good amount now if you are working in a house where there is carpet then you may want to put some down to make sure you don't get any now i do this all the time so i usually don't need to put anything down but accidents can happen , but if it's a hardwood floor and it kinda falls on the floor it's easy to clean so you just want to run that nice and close to the floor so just go over it a few times make sure it gets it right and covered you don't want it to run so the primer dries pretty quick but you don't want to you want to make sure you don't get too much yeah now in about an hour it'll be nice and dry and I'll probably put the first coat of

trim

paint on maybe an hour and a half two hours now that the baseboard curtain is nice and dry and free of any rough spots what you want to do is put on your first coat of white latex door and

trim

paint.

Now there are many different brands that you can use. I use a dry paint for doors and trim. It has a very nice pearl finish to it, so that's what I use now. using a smaller brush sometimes it's a little easier to apply the right amount of paint and just for the edge now what i'll do is always paint the skirting first before the wall it's much easier for me to paint the wall after so you want just put a decent amount of paint on your brush and then just like the primer just put it on nice and even nice and smooth, you don't want to put too much because you'll end up getting quite a bit of paint.

Even stroke it with the brush and don't worry about putting it on the wall because when you do the wall color you'll be able to clean that up. It's very important just to make sure you have enough paint on your brush, but definitely not. Too much, I usually put that much because there's nothing worse than coming back and seeing a lot of paint running now. If you don't do a lot of painting you might want to put something down to protect the floor it might make it a little easier I can just run my brush along the bottom of the wire leaving nothing on the floor but that's due to lots of practice once you have applied the first coat you will want it to dry for a few hours i think they recommend six to eight hours before applying the second coat.

I know I put the second coat on maybe three or four hours later and never had a problem. I think they just want to make sure you don't put it on too soon. so once this is done i just like to run the brush over to help remove any clog marks, it gives a nice smooth finish so we'll leave it for a few hours then reapply the second coat. Ok, I went ahead and gave the baseboards the second coat, so now after waiting several hours, I'm going to start on the edges. Now I use this frog tape.

The yellow material is for delicate work. There is also the green ribbon. but i prefer to use this one, it keeps the paint from running through it, it's pretty expensive, it depends where you live here, it's about ten bucks a roll, what you want to do is just run it over the baseboard a bit. and then just make sure you're right in that crease where the wall meets the top of the skirting and just inching in and cutting a lot cut a little bit at the end here and then just with your thumb guide it into that crease so you get a nice straight line just follow these principles for the rest of the room and just take your finger make sure it's nice and tight if it's not and it sticks out in some places then the paint will bleed so far i'm using the other product from the aftermath for the paint is a matte finish so it's not glossy it's pretty flat it's a good finish so once again I like to use the smaller brushes for the edges so if you use a heavier brush sometimes you can end up putting too much paint put that amount on and just go along the wall with even brush strokes and just blend the paint and then once you're done I like to remove the tape right away Since I'm trying to do all of this here today no I want to pull too fast, the paint must be dry and I've given it plenty of time, but only to prevent the paint from lifting off the plinth.
I'm going to go nice and slow and there you go you've got a nice straight line so for this part I'm going to roll the paint on the wall so the rolling application gets a nice roller cage and then a nice roller sleeve you want at least. 10 mils that's a good thickness to put on a nice consistent coat, sorry about the squeaks I use, I paint so often that I go through quite a few rollers in a year and they start to squeak a bit when you wash them, so there you go Go now, I'll let it dry for maybe an hour and an hour and a half and then I'll show you how to put on the second coat so it's nice and finished as you can see this is nice and dry now and what I usually do for the last coat because you really need to put on two good codes for good coverage so you can see through the gray a little bit here so there's no need to re-paste the edge because you've got a nice nice line there you don't have to go all the way to the bottom but i'm just going as close as i can so follow that as close as you can you don't want to go past the straight line but it gives you something you can keep going as close as you can so smooth that out there now that you end it right so i'll grab my roller and give it one more coat as you can see the second coat is almost completely dry and we have a nice clean straight line across the skirting so yeah this is how you paint the skirting find more videos on this channel for more painting tips as i'm planning to do a video series and if you want please subscribe
