Welcome to SewVeryEasy, my name is Laura. And it is very important to

cover

your

sewing

machine

when you are not using it. We create a lot of dust with the fabric and thread as we sew. The extra powder every day, well, we don't really need it in the

machine

s. But a

cover

is very easy to

make

and you can

custom

ize it to match any machine. I'm going to show you how quick and easy it is to

make

a cover for

your

own machine. Now I'm going to make a cover for my little Featherweight. It fits better on the camera, so you'll be able to see it, but the theory will be the same for any machine.

Any large

machine, small sewing machine, even overlocker. Now that I'm covering an antique machine, I'm going to use this antique looking fabric. It is not vintage; It is a new fabric from Timeless. But I'm pretty sure I have that thread and those printed dresses. And I'm going to coordinate it with two bright colors. And since I'm using such a high contrast, I'll want to have a thread that matches all three colors. In case you want to topstitch, it's good to have a matching thread. And I have a very fun fabric that I'm going to use as a lining.

how to make your own custom sewing machine cover...

To make the cover, you will need some kind of marker pencil and some kind of firm ruler or piece of plastic. You can use your cutting rules. And you will need a box. The reason I use a box is so I don't have to worry about keeping it upright. If it were just a piece of paper, I'd have to hold it somehow while I drew a template. so get a box that stands on its own. The size of the box you will need depends on the size of the machine. You are going to take the measurement on the side where the wheel is, because normally that is the largest side of each machine.

The other thing you'll want to consider: are you going to leave the spool in your machine when you're going to have it covered? Because sometimes that will take up a little more space. So I'm going to leave the spool that I normally use and then from there I can get the proper measurement. So my box will have to completely cover this side. And to know you have the right size box, you need to leave a little bit visible around the outside. Next will be marking the key areas you will need. And by keeping it as straight as possible (and usually your eye is enough) I'll be able to check my box.

Now, if you find that your box keeps moving even though it is alone, you can take it and push it against the wall so that the box is firmly against the wall and the machine pushes against the box. And so the box will not move. The next thing you're going to do is take your ruler or whatever you have that's made of hard plastic and you're going to go all the way around the outside, making marks as you go. So here's the shape of my machine, and I know that's going to be my butt. What I need to do now is straighten this out and I need to add a little bit more space because you don't want the cover to be so tight that it doesn't fit easily.
I like to add an inch to each side. And now I have my inch in every way. I'm going to cut it out so that this piece becomes a template. And now my template is finished. Now you can bring it up to the machine and decide if this is the size you want. Do you want to go bigger or do you want to go smaller? The only thing you will have to take into account is the seam allowance. And when you have the template exactly how you want it, right in front, back, on the sides, just to keep you in line when you go to cut the fabric, because this template is not just for this side, it's going to be for this side.
The next thing will be how long do you want the cover? If you have a machine that folds, are you going to leave it stored with the arm up or are you going to leave it with the arm down? Many times you will have a large embroidery unit here. So are you going to leave the unit on or are you going to remove it? I like to store it with the arm facing up, so it will make a nice case. Then from there I just need to measure the longest distance from the template to the edge of the machine.
So I'll take a hard ruler and I'll be able to place it right against the machine and I'll know exactly what size I want. Again, you will need to add a little room so that the cover is not too tight and has room for seam allowance. So my length will be 12". At this point, I write the length I want on my template. Now, to make it much easier to sew, take the square corners and round them, because you're going to sew everything in one continuous seam. Now I need to know the measurement that is going to give the entire outline.
So, to measure, you are just going to take your tape measure and you are going to measure the outside has been cardboard, you can just fold the tape measure completely so you can measure until you get to that. corner. Now you have the template for both sides, you have the measurement of how long the machine is and you have this measurement that goes around the machine. The next thing I like to do is use a foam-like product with a light fabric on each side of. Fairfield and it's called Support and it's foam, so it will hold its shape.
Now you can use quilt batting if you want, but this will hold its shape more, so it will be a little firmer And from this, you will need to cut. two pieces, which are the two sides. I used my template, I just drew it and now I can cut it out. So I have both sides cut. Now I need to cut the piece that will surround the machine. And I'm going to use the measurement that we already measured. So that measurement will be that piece that goes around the machine and will match the edge here. The next thing would be to decide how you want the cover to look.
In fact, you can quilt everything with different quilt squares, you can use striped fabric. Since it is now a large piece of foam, you can put whatever design you want on it. So I'm going to make a 5" stripe around it and then the top half will have another fabric. But you can decide whatever fabric you want. So just by choosing that backing, you'll be able to sew whatever you want to make the cover. Now, this will be the piece that goes around Now you can sew them all together or you can sew them directly onto the foam once I have the fabric.
I want on the front, I want to sew the lining fabric together with just a couple rows of stitching. I'm going to do is quilt these two layers together that way, when the cover is on the front. In the machine, the lining stays on top and doesn't sag. You can quilt as much or as little as you want. You've quilted the front and the back, make a zigzag around it, keeping the three layers together. And that zigzag will take those three layers and that foam and squish them together, so the foam will be very small, like the fabric. easier to sew the seams if you do this.
And do it on all your pieces. Now at this point you can add any decorative element you want. You could add pockets. My Bernina makes a beautiful decorative bow and I'm going to put it on the front. So what you want to do is completely decorate your pieces first and you're going to put them together. So my cover is going to be like this. This will be the front part because I want a bandage, and on the back I have added a pocket. So all my pieces are now assembled how I would like them. Next we need to do some binding so we can sew it together.
To make the binding, cut a 2" strip from the width of the fabric, then take it and press with the wrong sides. And you are going to sew this to the bottom of the cover. So the part that is not going to be sew here, you need to sew it. Place the 2" binding along the edge and sew a quarter inch. And when it's been sewn a quarter of an inch, you'll be able to take this and wrap it back. And what you've done is covered the raw seam. Now you can sew it by hand or by machine.
So the funds are complete. The next thing is to take two more binding strips and sew them on each edge, leaving a little bit hanging on each side. However, this time you won't take them and fold them. Leave them flat so you can see all the raw edges. The binding is on but not folded. Leave it in the seam. The reason is that you will have to sew the sides. Once you've sewn the sides, you can use the binding to cover the raw seams. So make sure you have the sides facing the right direction, so the front is facing the front and the back is facing the back.
And that's where your template notes will come in handy. So you're going to sew the backs together, because then that seam is going to cover that seam. I like to sew both front sides first. And with that extra piece that was hanging down, join the seams on both sides and then take that extra piece and just roll it up and sew, and stop just before you have that edge that you need to go around. Then part of the sides are sewn. Now you can turn it over and you are going to do the same a little bit on the other sides.
So you're not sewing this part; just those two little edges. Match the raw edge and match the bottom, fold it over and sew just a couple of inches. So now you have a nice lead all the way down the bottom. And when you fold it, when you go to sew that binding, it will cover all the raw edges. Now you have this flap on each side and you will have to continue sewing until the end. And now that the sides are sewn, you can take the binding, you can turn it over and hand sew it. So regardless of whether you make a small or large one, the way to do it is the same.
You need to make that template for the side. You need the length and then that measurement, and those are the only measurements you need. The rest is up to your imagination on how you want to decorate your cover. Thank you for joining me today on SewVeryEasy. Feel free to subscribe and, as always, come back.
