How To Make A "Trip Around The World" Quilt the EASY WAY!

Jun 05, 2021
Hi, I'm Donna Jordan from Jordan Fabrics. You may have seen our last tutorial where my husband Matt and I showed you how to hand-tie this

quilt

, but we've actually received a lot of requests for how to

make

this

quilt

pattern. What I'm going to show you today is how to

make

the patterns called around the

world

and the easiest way to make this quilt is not to think of it as a whole quilt top, but to think of it as four quadrants and four frames. pieces now. That's how I start all my patterns with a sketch, but when you watch the video, I'll already have the whole free pattern written out and you can click the link right under the video and then you can follow along now.

Worldwide we need 13 prints, but I can't get these fabrics anymore because I pulled this blouse out of my stash and it's about 20 years old, but we have some really nice Christmas prints. We have all these prints that we had specially printed. Japan, so I'm going to ask my husband Matt to help me pull out a few and choose which ones would look good on this quilt. Hello everyone for the

trip

around the

world

quilt. I like to use many different colors. You can use two colors or you could. it uses 20 colors, but for me the best thing about that pattern is that you can use as many different colors as you want.

I've been looking through my stash a bit and these are the fabrics I think I'm going to use. I have some black, green, red, cream backgrounds with many colors in those prints. I love how this looks now, from each of these 13 prints, we will need three quarters of a yard. Now everything will be cut exactly the same. I'm going to cut everything into four inch squares. Now I'm using three fabrics here, so I have six layers. I feel comfortable cutting six layers. You might want to cut a few more or a few less and I'm going to use My little dumbbell weight is here to help hold my plastic ruler so it doesn't move around while I cut.

Now I am stacking each fabric in its own pile. I have cut all the squares and arranged them somehow. reds, greens going to blacks and creams and this is the order. I'm going to put them in the cone. Now I could put an entire corner on a table and then grab the rows, but instead I'm just going to grab all of this. right to the sewing machine now I have a little temporary table set up next to my sewing machine here and I'm going to pick up the first two pieces, this is going to be a corner and this is going to go right next to it and I'm going to sew them together and leave them on the machine , so I'll leave them right there and I'll take the next one around the circle, which is this one and the one that will go next to it. which will be this one and I'll sew them together and leave them back there, so my first pair was this one and this one, the second pair was this one and this one now I'm going to wear this one and this one now.

I'm going to take this one and this one, so all I'm going to do is take a new one and the old one to match them up and I'm going to go here and here and keep working until I have the eleventh pair of squares, that's the amount we want. We will have eleven rows. Now we'll go back to the beginning and add the third block to this row to determine which one to use. You can see what we have. I got here and we got here, this is the one we're going to start with, then we'll continue collecting them counterclockwise each time, here's the last block of this row, now to start the next row.
I have this fabric it's here this fabric is here this fabric is here so this is the one we're going to start this row with then we're going to continue picking them up in this counterclockwise direction now we're starting to see the pattern we're starting to see those nice diagonal lines, so to find our block that we'll start with here, we have it here, here, here, so this is what we'll start with and then we'll just choose these. in that order and sew them together, so here is the last block of the last row, so I have 11 rows with 11 in each row.
Now we're just going to sew the rows together, so I'm going to take this first row and I'm going to finger press all the seams to the right and then on the next row down, I'm going to finger press all the seams to the left. and that way, when we join these rows, they will be in opposite directions so that they will be nested and it will be very

easy

to get them to coincide and lie flat. There is a quarter of the quilt completely ready. Now I'm going to need to make three more that look exactly like this, so I'll go ahead and sew them together.
All four of them are exactly the same, so I'm going to lay them out like this and this is going to be my Center, that nice, dark arrangement and then all we have to do is make what I call a fill row that Let's make a fill row here and here and here and here to make the filling row. You see how we have kind of a point that comes here, so you find that it's going to go right there. You just find where the pieces come together. and they're actually in the same order, but you can see where it's pointing and paste that block.
Yes, to make this row, I'm just going to gather them up to keep them in order, sew them in a row, and lay them out. right back here, the filler rows are all done, so I made filler rows again. Every row of filling is exactly the same, there's exactly the same thing, so now we're starting to look at the completed quilt and the only thing we need to do after this is we're going to have a hole right in the center and we just need to put a block in there come on, so there's a block that I'm going to put red right in the center and then we're going to sew these three pieces together these three let's put those three together and then the whole quote will be done.
I already have the whole top done and I'm going to hand tie this just like we did this quilt here now if you want a very detailed explanation and demonstration of how to do this. We have a video that will show you each step, but for now I'll just briefly show you each step that we're going to do to tie this hand. I have the back piece together and I'm going to lie down. put it on the table here, right side up, now we're going to place the quilt top right side down on top of the back.
Now I'm going to pin around three sides of the quilt and sew around three sides of the quilt. I'm going to put my quilt that is front to back on top of the batting. This is a puffy bonded polyester batting. I'm trimming the backing and excess batting to match the top. Now I'm going to sew the batting. to the quilt through the seam allowance around all three sides Matt is going to help us turn this right side out ready yeah done now we're all ready to start hand tying so I'm just going to use a needle and some thread acrylic.
I put my cutting mat here so I don't damage my table and I'm going to put ties at every other intersection, so I'm just going to go about a quarter inch away from the intersection, hit the table and get right out. so you can keep putting stitches until the thread runs out, you don't need to cut them, you can keep them on a long rope. Now I just cut the threads and start tying this quilt. Now I'm going to trim the threads. to about an inch and I'm going to take fraying, check a drop in the knot and that will keep it from coming undone and it will dry out, and even if you wash it, it will keep the thread nice and tight in there, the quilt.
Everything is now finished to sew the last side. I just turned everything over here and made a seam on my sewing machine and there's the back of that beautiful poinsettia. The pattern is a little easier than it seems once you understand the procedure. below it sews up pretty quickly and I really like the way you can see the color sections getting bigger thanks for watching our tutorial today on how to make the
